They were facing a shorthanded Los Angeles Lakers team that was without both Luka Doncic and LeBron James, after all, and they were at home. Alas, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-even-james-worthy-is-in-awe-of-austin-reaves-51-point-night">Austin Reaves happened to put up 51 points</a> in a crazy scoring explosion as the Lakers outgunned the Kings in the process, 127-120.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/los-angeles-lakers/lakers-news-austin-reaves-drops-the-mic-with-perfect-reaction-to-51-point-stunner">Reaves will surely draw most of the plaudits</a> for the way he carried the Lakers to a win, looking like a superstar-level player all night long on Sunday. But Kings fans would not want to let LA’s free-throw advantage go unnoticed. They took 46 free throws compared to Sacramento’s 18, and it was always going to be difficult for the Kings to overcome that kind of disparity at the charity stripe.</p><p>Even Kings star DeMar DeRozan <a href="https://twitter.com/SeanCunningham/status/1982679958976934061" rel="noopener">couldn’t believe how many</a> free throws the Lakers took.</p><p>“46 free throws to our 18? We had to beg for most of those. It’s deflating, especially when we go on out there and play hard and try to compete. It seemed like we getting called for fouls but on the other end, when we try to be aggressive, none of that go our way. It’s kind of deflating at times,” DeRozan said in his postgame presser, via Sean Cunningham of KCRA News.</p><p>“46 free throws is crazy. The Lakers guard has an exceptional whistle, and he made the Kings pay for some of their misplaced aggression on the defensive end.</p><p>Nonetheless, it’s long been a trend in the NBA that the Lakers have a built-in advantage at the foul line. Such is the perk of having someone like James or Doncic on the roster. But the Kings learned the hard way that even Reaves can have a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander-esque night at the foul line and make them pay.</p><h2><b>Kings defense needs a lot of work</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Lakers-guard-Austin-Reaves-15-reacts.jpg"><figcaption>© Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Suffice to say, the Kings’ defense has plenty of room for improvement. Their opponents have attempted more free throws than them in each of their first three games, and they’ve had a tendency to get handsy on that end of the floor.</p><p>If anything, someone like Keon Ellis, who is one of the best defenders in the NBA, has to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-player-shock-nba-breakout-2024-25-season">getting more minutes for the Kings</a>. But Sacramento has a logjam in the backcourt and head coach Doug Christie doesn’t seem to trust Ellis that much. Alas, not too many are bullish on the Kings’ chances of making the playoffs once more. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-miss-season-opener-hamstring-injury">Domantas Sabonis will miss</a> the start of the season due to an injury and so will Keegan Murray. Moreover, fans aren’t very optimistic about the team’s mishmash of talent that was made all the more complicated by the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-russell-westbrook-defiant-take-retirement-barely-getting-signed">addition of Russell Westbrook.</a></p><p>Nonetheless, veteran star DeMar DeRozan is simply using all that doubt towards the Kings as fuel, with the 36-year-old <a href="https://twitter.com/TheDunkCentral/status/1980399412838031412" rel="noopener">raring to prove everyone wrong</a>.</p><p>“You got to find fuel wherever you can find it. That’s definitely one of them. Suffice to say, that is not a very appealing situation.</p><p>Moreover, there is a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-player-shock-world-breakout-season">huge logjam in the Kings backcourt</a>; Westbrook will have to share the ball with the likes of Malik Monk and Dennis Schroder. Zach LaVine will need his touches. DeRozan is at his best when the ball is at his hands as well.</p><p>The current Kings roster looks like something a mad scientist decided to cook up, although it looks like DeRozan will be trying his hardest to make this hodgepodge work.</p><h2><b>Can the Kings make sense of their current roster?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Domantas-Sabonis-attempts-a-shot-during-2025-preseason.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Head coach Doug Christie is about to have his work cut out for him. He has plenty of players at his disposal that need the basketball, and they don’t have much in the way of floor-spacing. LaVine and Monk are good three-point shooters, but Schroder, Westbrook, and DeRozan aren’t. This will make for some very odd lineup decisions from Christie, especially with Murray and Sabonis on the mend.</p><p>There is a chance that the Kings even finish last in the Pacific Division even amid the Phoenix Suns’ soft reset. This roster has the potential to be very dysfunctional, and only time will tell if they’re capable of making sense of this odd collection of talent.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It will be another chance <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-demar-demar-calls-last-season-eternally-a-stshow">for Kings guard DeMar DeRozan</a> to face off against his former team, whom he helped guide to the Eastern Conference Finals back in 2016.</p><p>Last year, DeRozan was embroiled in a mini-feud with Toronto rapper Drake, who said, “If you ever put a DeRozan banner up, I’ll go up there and pull it down myself,” per TSN.</p><p>Recently, DeRozan spoke on<a href="https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article312426382.html" rel="noopener"> that supposed feud.</a></p><p>“What I did there, I put my life on the line every single moment I stepped on the court. Nothing or nobody could ever take that away. I don’t get caught up in shenanigans or all the bull crap that comes with it,” said DeRozan, per Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee. “At the end of the day, I hoop. I go out there. Every true fan and every person that knows me there knows I represented that place more than anybody that ever came through there.”</p><h2><b>An interesting legacy</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/DeMar-DeRozan-looks-on.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>DeMar DeRozan in many ways helped put Toronto back on the basketball map in the 2010s but was never able to get over the LeBron James-sized roadblock during his time there.</p><p>DeRozan also spoke on his appearance in Kendrick Lamar’s video for “Not Like Us,” which dropped in the middle of the two rappers’ feud last year.</p><p>“Drake’s still my man, still my man, none of it changed,” DeRozan said. “It’s so easy to get overlooked and look at it for what it looks like, but at the end of the day it’s music, entertainment. Two of the biggest rappers in the world went at it from a competitive standpoint and they battled it out.
