Dru Anthrop and Miles Simon among others explored better pastures outside of Darvin Ham’s squad. Although, Rob Pelinka may have found a diamond in the rough as <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-demarre-carroll-added-darvin-hams-coaching-staff" rel="noopener">they hired DeMarre Carroll.</a></p><p>The Lakers and Rob Pelinka have made it official that the former Atlanta Hawks star will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-darvin-ham-assistant-los-angeles-phil-handy-austin-reaves-rui-hachimura-lebron-james" rel="noopener">join Darvin Ham’s coaching staff.</a> DeMarre Carroll and the Los Angeles head coach have worked together in the past. Ham was there during the Hawks’ bitter 2013-14 season. He was an assistant coach for Mike Budenholzer together with Kenny Atkinson, Taylor Jenkins, and Quin Snyder.</p><p>The new assistant coach could not help but be excited about his new venture. He also met LeBron James in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Cleveland Cavaliers overpowered the top-seeded Hawks at the time. Arguably, that would have been the best opportunity for the Junkyard Dog to add a Larry O’Brien trophy to his resume.</p><p>He bounced around the NBA since then. The Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets, and San Antonio Spurs were the teams he played for after his Atlanta stint. Carroll retired from the league after a year with the Houston Rockets without an NBA Championship.</p><p>The Los Angeles Lakers could be his next opportunity to finally win the championship.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Carroll, who played 11 seasons in the NBA (2009-2020), was coached by Budenholzer and then-assistant Ham with the Atlanta Hawks in 2013-14 and 2014-15. With that said, you can see why the Rockets swingman doesn’t have a problem with the meal he’s eating.</p><p>Carroll played in six games for the Rockets before the season was suspended in March after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-nba-season-suspended-after-rudy-gobert-tests-positive-for-coronavirus/">tested positive for COVID-19</a>. He began the campaign with the San Antonio Spurs but was waived in February. The Rockets signed him two days after he was waived by San Antonio.</p><p>Carroll, who began his NBA career with the Memphis Grizzlies, has career averages of 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 575 regular-season games with the Grizzlies, Rockets, Denver Nuggets, Utah Jazz, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, Brooklyn Nets and Spurs.</p><p>For the eight seeding games that will take place before the start of the 2020 playoffs, the Rockets will face the Dallas Mavericks, Milwaukee Bucks, Portland Trail Blazers, Los Angeles Lakers, Sacramento Kings, Spurs, Indiana Pacers and Philadelphia 76ers.</p><p>The Rockets have already virtually clinched a spot in the 2020 playoffs. It was thus no surprise when news came that he’d been bought out, and will instead play for the small-ball Rockets in the latter half of the season. Long-time head coach Gregg Popovich later <a href="https://twitter.com/tom_orsborn/status/1231037606185426946?s=20">claimed that this move</a> was about the Spurs trying to do the veteran forward a solid.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><iframe class="no-margin"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-width="550" data-dnt="true"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Pop said DeMarre Carroll buy out was about <a target="_blank" href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Spurs?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Spurs</a> trying to do "something good for him…He’s a good guy, and he wasn’t playing. Carroll had a solid year coming off of Brooklyn, averaging 11 points in a little over 25 minutes of play. Moreover, the forward played in a respectable 67 games. Everyone thus raised their eyebrows when the Spurs hardly let the 33-year-old step on court. In fact, since October, Carroll had only racked up an average of 9 minutes playing time in only 15 games.</p><p>Some surmised that perhaps it was San Antonio’s somewhat funky roster. The team was guard-heavy with Dejounte Murray making a comeback, Bryn Forbes continuing as a starter, and Derrick White, Patty Mills, and Lonnie Walker IV coming off the bench. DeMar DeRozan, who usually played at the two, now frequently logs in minutes as a small forward. Rudy Gay was often the second unit, playing 21 minutes per game off the bench. Meanwhile, 34-year-old LaMarcus Aldridge embraced his role as a center, and Trey Lyles has been a steady starting power forward. There was nowhere to fit Carroll. To borrow Pop’s words, “There are too many people ahead of him.”</p><p>Perhaps Carroll is best off in another team. But with the basketball thing, we just didn’t jell.”</blockquote><p>Carroll only appeared in 15 games for the Spurs this season. San Antonio acquired Carroll from the Brooklyn Nets in a sign-and-trade deal in July. He <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/carrode01.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">averaged</a> 2.2 points and 2.1 rebounds with the Spurs while shooting 31.0 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from beyond the arc and 60.0 percent from the free-throw line.</p><p>Now 33, Carroll has career NBA averages of 9.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 569 games with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/memphis-grizzlies/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Memphis Grizzlies</a>, Rockets, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/denver-nuggets/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Denver Nuggets</a>, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/utah-jazz/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Utah Jazz</a>, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/atlanta-hawks/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Atlanta Hawks</a>, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/toronto-raptors/" rel="noopener noreferrer">Toronto Raptors</a>, Nets and Spurs. He played his college ball at Vanderbilt and Missouri and was drafted by the Grizzlies with the 27th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.</p><p>Carroll has postseason experience, something the Rockets value. The Alabama native has played in 62 postseason games and has career averages of 9.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.1 assists.</p><p>Spurs fans are probably upset with Carroll, but this partnership wasn’t right from the beginning.
