I think he did a mistake, but you need to understand that he gives (an) example to people.”</p><p>Deni Avdija believes Irving is a role model. Although, he acknowledged that he thinks Kyrie made a mistake. Avdija continued by explaining how Irving’s platform can influence those who look up to him.</p><p>“People look up to him,” Deni Avdija said. “You know what I’m saying? So you can think whatever you want, you can do whatever you want — just I don’t think it’s right to go out in public and publish it and let little kids that follow you see it and the generations that come after to think like that. Because it’s not true. And I don’t think it’s fair. Hopefully, he’s sorry for what he said. Other than that, I don’t have any other room to say anything about it. Y’all probably can guess my comments on it. But that’s about it.”</p><p>Deni Avdija made his thoughts on the matter clear. He understands that the Nets point guard made a mistake and hopes that he’s sorry.</p><p>Irving has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-kyrie-irving-breaks-silence-in-light-of-suspension/" rel="noopener">issued an apology</a>. Deni Avdija was drafted by the Wizards with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2020 draft and is one of the team’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-deni-avdija-entrusted-by-wes-unseld-jr-to-play-very-important-role-for-washington/">top young talent.</a> Avdija is coming off a promising second year in the NBA during which he averaged 8.4 points per game and 5.2 rebounds while shooting 43.2 percent from the field and playing in all 82 games.</p><p>Avdija was named the Wizards starting small forward right before Wednesday’s game, beating out Will Barton and Rui Hachimura. He had missed the entire preseason with a groin injury he suffered in the off-season during competition with the Israeli national team.</p><p>Aside from his offense, Avdija has been a solid defensive player and will provide the Wizards with some size on the wings alongside Bradley Beal.</p><p>Avdija has been playing professional basketball since he was 16 when he suited up for Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Israeli League. However, Deni Avdija, one of their key young players, may need some more time to ready himself for the 2022-23 NBA season.</p><p>Avdija suffered a groin injury this summer during his time playing for the Israeli national team in the EuroBasket tournament. He appeared in all 82 games last year, starting just eight of them.</p><p>Playing time will not be easy to come by for the 21-year-old forward. After the Wizards added the likes of Will Barton and Johnny Davis to a team that already has Kyle Kuzma, Corey Kispert and Rui Hachimura, Avdija will have lots of competition to be a key wing for Washington. Head coach Wes Unseld Jr. trusted Avdija to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/wizards-news-deni-avdija-entrusted-by-wes-unseld-jr-to-play-very-important-role-for-washington/">guard some of the best players in the league</a>, though, so he has shown that he can be productive. As it stands, the Israeli has been doing a good and coach Unseld is confident that he could still improve.</p><blockquote>“It’s going to be a challenge. The fact that he won’t have to undergo surgery means that the injury is not as serious as initially anticipated. A fibular hairline fracture is still a significant injury, but the Wizards rookie should be able to resume basketball activities sooner than expected. 12 weeks is still 12 weeks though, and we don’t expect Avdija to return this season.</p><p>It is worth noting, however, that right now, the Wizards have emerged as one of the hottest teams in the NBA. They have won six straight games and are all of a sudden in playoff contention in the East. They currently sit three and a half games behind the eighth-seeded Charlotte Hornets (as of Thursday afternoon), so it’s still going to be a tough ask for them to claim a spot in the postseason.</p><p>Nevertheless, the fact that the league intends to implement a play-in tournament for the playoffs provides Washington with even more hope to make an unlikely appearance in the postseason. Avdija was averaging 6.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.2 assists on 41.7 percent shooting from the field in 53 games played so far.</p><p>The injury bug has indeed ravaged some of the biggest names from last year’s draft class, as ROY frontrunner LaMelo Ball also went down to a wrist injury last March. James Wiseman is also done for the season after undergoing meniscus surgery. The 20-year-old swingman was highly-touted coming into the 2020 NBA Draft and fell all the way to the ninth spot where he was picked up by the Wizards. The Knicks, who were picking eighth, went with athletic forward Obi Toppin from Dayton.</p><p>Almost halfway through the season, Avdija admits that he didn’t mind what spot he landed in, whether it was New York or Washington. All he wanted was to get picked.</p><blockquote>“I just wanted to be drafted,’’ Avdija said on a Zoom call Thursday (via <a href="https://nypost.com/2021/02/11/deni-avdija-unfazed-by-knicks-draft-snub/">The NY Post</a>). “I wasn’t thinking about the city, how many people in the city and how many Jews are in New York City. I was just hoping to go to a team that believes in me and wants me there. That’s what happened. I’m with the Wizards and am as happy as can be.’’</blockquote><p>Despite slipping past the Knicks, Avdija’s arrival in Washington worked well for him. The Israeli joins a young roster led by vets like Bradley Beal and Russell Westbrook. With a rather depleted frontcourt, he’s played a decent amount of minutes for the young Wizards squad and is getting solid minutes under head coach Scott Brooks. Though his production has still been modest and he still looks quite raw, the potential and the confidence are growing by the minute.</p><p>On the other side of the fence, Toppin’s start to his Knicks career hasn’t seen as much opportunity. He’s only been averaging 4.6 points per game in 11.7 minutes off the bench. Unlike in DC, the Knicks’ frontcourt is a bit loaded with Julius Randle spearheading things which means Toppin should be patient and wait for his opportunities.</p><p>Avdija and Toppin are set to face each other for the first time on Friday when the Knicks pay a visit to the Wizards.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
