After winning his first championship with the Boston Celtics, White was then a part of the USA Basketball Olympics team that claimed the gold medal in France.</p><p>Aside from the countless championship and Olympics parties he was invited to, White also made it back to Boulder, Colorado, where he was being honored at homecoming during a Colorado football game. Unfortunately, things went downhill when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-derrick-white-fight-video-leaks-from-colorado-colorado-state-football">White found himself involved in a scuffle</a> and altercation with someone in the stands.</p><p>While it is unknown what exactly was said and what occurred, a fan appeared to swing at White, knocking his hat off. The Celtics guard was immediately held back and did not get involved in the fight, which was probably a good thing since he would’ve faced discipline from law enforcement and possibly the NBA.</p><p>On Tuesday at Celtics media day, White was asked about this <a href="https://x.com/danield1214/status/1838602521872314409" rel="noopener">incident</a> and downplayed what happened, simply laughing the matter off.</p><p>“Obviously, the Colorado situation is unfortunate,” White told reporters, via ClutchPoints Celtics reporter Daniel Donabedian. “I never thought I’d be in that situation, honestly. I didn’t actually get hit. He just hit my hat off. But I shouldn’t have been there, and it’s unfortunate. Just moving on.”</p><p>The man who swung at and struck White was wearing a Colorado State hat, the rival team that Colorado defeated 31-26 in this homecoming game. With no punches being thrown back and the matter involving White being resolved right away, no police reports were filed, and there was no wrongdoing on White’s part.</p><p>As far as how the rest of the offseason has gone for White, he was recently given a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-derrick-white-125-9-million-contract-extension-after-championship">four-year, $125.9 million contract extension</a> that keeps him in Boston through the 2028-29 season.</p><p>The San Antonio Spurs traded White to the Celtics during the 2021-22 season, and he instantly became a focal point of their attack on both ends of the floor. This past season, the combo guard became an essential part of the Celtics’ core, which is why <a href="https://x.com/danield1214/status/1838603286854713468" rel="noopener">the team rewarded him</a> with this contract extension.</p><p>“I didn’t want to go anywhere else,” White said of Boston on Tuesday. “I love being here, and me and my family are super excited to be here for a while.”</p><p>White was one of several Celtics players to receive a new contract this summer as the team made it a point of emphasis to reward their entire core group after the recent championship run.</p><p>The 30-year-old guard now enters his eighth NBA season and third full season with the Celtics. In a total of 73 games last season, all of which he started, White averaged 15.2 points and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 39.6 percent from three-point range. Last season, Colorado Football won their first game against TCU, but ultimately finished last place in the Pac-12 with a 4-8 record.</p><p>Still, coach Prime never wavered from his belief in his team.</p><p>“I’d be an idiot to sit over here and not tell you we plan on winning. I don’t know who sits down and says they don’t plan on winning. You’ve got to be an idiot to say that,” Sanders said.</p><h2>The Celtics guard comes home</h2><p>Meanwhile, Derrick White is in a good position. Not only is he coming into the new season with a ring and Olympic gold medal, he is also poised to win another championship. The Celtics’ 2024 title team is relatively intact, locking <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-makes-nba-history-with-315-million-contract-extension">Jayson Tatum into a five-year $315 million extension</a>. A year prior, Finals MVP Jaylen Brown also signed a five-year, $304 million supermax.</p><p>Last season’s acquisitions Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis should also continue contributing to the team, barring a comedown after the high of winning a championship. The Celtics should also rely on Derrick White’s two-way versatility to lift them in games.</p><p>While it may not be a blockbuster move, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-boston-grade-lonnie-walker-nba-free-agency-signing">Celtics also signed Lonnie Walker IV</a> to a one-year deal, boosting their bench firepower. The former Lakers swingman has proven himself to be a dynamic playoff scorer during the Lakers’ Game 4 victory over the Golden State Warriors in the 2023 second round.</p><p>The Celtics deserve to feel confident in their roster, though it remains to be seen whether they can fend off recently upgraded Eastern Conference contenders.</p><p>For one, the Philadelphia 76ers may try to overwhelm them with pure offense thanks to the Big Three of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George. Of course, statistics can never answer the GOAT debate conclusively, but it would give the Celtics’ guard’s choice a little context.</p><p>For one, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-ex-la-players-have-intriguing-exchange-about-lebron-james-longevity">longevity alone might put LeBron James</a> over Michael Jordan. In 2003, the Cleveland Cavaliers drafted James No. 1 overall when he was only 18, making him one of the youngest players in the league at the time.</p><p>Twenty-one seasons later, LeBron is still playing on the Los Angeles Lakers, and he is now the oldest player in the NBA at 39, the only active player born before 1985.</p><p>During his 21 seasons, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-passes-fellow-lakers-legend-kareem-abdul-jabbar-for-most-points-in-nba-history">LeBron James has become the NBA’s all-time leading scorer</a> with 40,474 total points, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record of 38,387, a record nobody thought an active player could break. Likewise, in 2016, James led the only team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 hole in the NBA Finals and win.</p><p>King James is also the only player to lead his team in all five major statistical categories–points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks–in the Finals. For his career, LeBron <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/lebron-james-career-playoff-stats" rel="noopener">averages</a> 28.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in the playoffs.</p><p>Meanwhile, many fans believe that Michael Jordan’s edge over Bron is his six rings. James only has a Finals record of 4-6, whereas MJ won all six of his Finals appearances without ever needing a Game 7. Likewise, His Airness also three-peated twice, establishing his dominance over the 1990s and helping grow the game of basketball overseas.</p><p>Moreover, Jordan won his rings under only one coach, Phil Jackson, while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-stephen-a-smith-rips-star-lebron-james-goat-status-amid-massive-coaching-turnover">LeBron keeps changing coaches</a> almost every few years.</p><h2><b>The Celtics guard makes his decision</b></h2><p>Beyond the numbers, though, another point of contention is that you would <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-michael-jordan-goat-dwight-howard">trust MJ over LeBron</a> to take the last shot when the game is on the line. The reasoning is that James would rather pass the ball than shoot the ball himself.</p><p>Still, basketball is a team sport, and LeBron is ultimately an unselfish player who’ll make the correct play every time, even if it results in a miss. Four of the five posts directly mention Nike.</p><p>So far, the drama between Nike and Brown hasn’t distracted Team USA on the court. The Americans won all five of their exhibition games and then kicked off group play with a 110-84 drubbing of Serbia and three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.</p><p>Holiday was the third-leading scorer for Team USA with 15 points on 75% shooting from the field. White added two points, two steals, one rebound, and one block off the bench in 16 minutes of play.</p><p>Meanwhile, Tatum was one of just two Americans to not enter the opening contest. Instead, Brown’s Boston Celtics teammate Derrick White was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-derrick-white-vocal-on-team-usa-call-up-as-kawhi-leonard-replacement">added as the replacement</a>. So what does Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens think about the Team USA decision?</p><p>“Jaylen’s a great player. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Jaylen could be on any team, any Olympic team in any year,” Stevens <a href="https://x.com/RealBobManning/status/1813702773671969177" rel="noopener">said</a>, via Bobby Manning of CLNS Media. “But at the end of the day, his approach, he talked about how he called Derrick, he talked about his own feelings … whether he has success, or he gets all the accolades, like Finals MVP or eastern conference finals MVP, or he feels like he got left off the team.</p><p>“He’s going to be motivated and hungry regardless. That’s what I’ve always loved about him. He always goes back to work.”</p><p>Brown led the Celtics in the NBA postseason along with Jayson Tatum. Tatum is often regarded as the Celtics best player but it was Brown who won the NBA Finals MVP Award. There is no question that Brown could have played for Team USA in 2024.</p><p>Nevertheless, it was White who was ultimately selected as Leonard’s replacement. White is a talented player as well, as he enjoyed a breakout 2023-24 season. Still, Brown is one of the best players in the entire NBA. Perhaps he will use <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-jaylen-brown-cryptic-reaction-derrick-white-team-usa">the snub</a> as motivation for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.</p><h2><b>Jaylen Brown is a superstar</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Jaylen-Brown-dunking-1.jpg"><figcaption>Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Brown, 27, has been considered one of the best secondary stars in the league over the past few years. He took a step forward in the 2024 postseason, however, proving he can lead a championship team.</p><p>He had plenty of help from Tatum, White, Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and the rest of the roster. Boston would not have played as well as they did without Brown, though.</p><p>Brown is a three-time NBA All-Star. He is a quality scorer who can finish at the basket and also has the ability to connect on the three-ball. Brown is also a respectable defensive presence. His versatility makes him a reliable superstar at the NBA level.</p><p>Team USA features no shortage of talent. They are the favorite in the Olympics despite Jaylen Brown’s absence. With that being said, having a player like Brown on the team would have only increased their chances of winning.</p><p>At the very least, Brown will get to rest and recover following the Celtics’ 2024 NBA championship run. Playing deep into June is exciting but also exhausting. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-jaylen-brown-cryptic-reaction-derrick-white-team-usa">Brown’s discontent</a> over how things shook up for himself wasn’t taken too kindly by some fans. After all, it seemed as though Brown, in addition to having sour grapes, wasn’t too pleased with the fact that Derrick White, his teammate, was the one who made the team over him.</p><p>But in the end, there is no ill-feelings between Brown and White, especially after the two have been through war together in leading the Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship. Brown, pulling up to the Summer League festivities in Vegas, clarified that he had already talked to White and said that it <a href="https://twitter.com/NoaDalzellNBA/status/1813057391526879433" rel="noopener">remains all love</a> between them two.</p><p>“I called Derrick right away, just to make sure there was so confusion, like my love for you, and all of that. He knew that, and he did. White arrived in Abu Dhabi to join his teammates Sunday, and the key member of the NBA champion Boston Celtics is looking forward to getting the opportunity to play in the Paris Olympics.</p><p>White had been informed by USA basketball leadership that he was being looked at as a potential replacement for Leonard in June. However, White did not anticipate that Leonard was going to be be sidelined by his injury.</p><p>However, once it became clear that Leonard was not going to be close to 100 percent healthy, White <a href="https://www.boston.com/sports/boston-celtics/2024/07/14/derrick-white-team-usa-celtics/">got the call</a> from Executive Director Grant Hill to join the team.</p><p>“When I seen all that happened [with Leonard] and I got the call, I was ready to go,” White said. ”I just had to talk to the family and try to figure out how we can make it work and as quickly as possible. I’m super thankful and grateful and excited to be here.”</p><p>Team USA is playing an exhibition game Monday against Australia. The game in Abu Dhabi could give White a chance to play with his Olympic teammates, but head coach Steve Kerr has not indicated that he will have White compete so soon after arriving after his long flight.</p><h2><b>White offers great defensive skills</b></h2><p>However, White <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-jaylen-brown-cryptic-reaction-derrick-white-team-usa">was selected</a> for his ability to guard multiple positions and make key plays when the game is on the line. White and Celtics teammate Jrue Holiday have a chance to be two of the defensive stoppers on Team USA.</p><p>Prior to joining the Olympic team in Abu Dhabi, White was taking some time off from basketball after Boston’s championship run. Days after the Celtics won the title, he signed a four-year, $126 million contract extension with the team.</p><p>White had also been called up to play with the U.S. senior team in 2019. He had been with the Select Team prior to his call-up, and that was considered a move that raised some eyebrows because White had gained the last roster spot on the Select Team.</p><p>While Derrick White has been chosen to replace the injured Leonard, another move may or may not have to be made in the coming days regarding Kevin Durant.</p><p>The elite scorer has a calf injury and has missed recent practices and he will not play in Monday’s game against Australia. If he doesn’t make a strong recovery in the upcoming days or weeks, Hill and head coach Steve Kerr may have to replace him.</p><p>Team USA has until July 27 to finalize its roster, and if Durant needs to be replaced, another Celtic is likely to be considered. Jaylen Brown was the MVP of the Eastern Conference Finals and the NBA Finals, and it seems likely that he should be on the radar.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While NBA Finals MVP Jaylen Brown seemed to be a logical wing replacement for Leonard, the Americans are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-derrick-white-vocal-quick-boston-extension-after-nba-championship">choosing</a> Brown’s Boston Celtics teammate Derrick White instead, which seemingly sparked a reaction from Brown.</p><p>Following reports that White would become Leonard’s replacement, Brown <a href="https://x.com/FCHWPO/status/1811069891299918281" rel="noopener">used no words</a> but conveyed a pretty curious message nonetheless in a tweet: “🧐🧐🧐”</p><p>Brown, a Georgia native, has not competed as part of the U.S. senior national team during his career. His only international play experience came in 2014 when he and the U.S. won gold at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship. White has never played in the Olympics, but he was a part of the U.S. team that finished in seventh place at the 2019 FIBA World Cup.</p><h2><b>Jaylen Brown snubbed for Team USA</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Derrick-White-Jaylen-Brown-Sam-Hauser-and-Jayson-Tatum.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>If any player has a reason to complain about not being included on Team USA for the 2024 Olympics, it’s Jaylen Brown. The 27-year-old wing is a three-time All-Star, 2023 All-NBA second-team player, and the reigning Finals MVP after averaging 20.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5 assists per game during the Boston Celtics’ 4-1 beatdown of the Dallas Mavericks in the 2024 NBA Finals.</p><p>However, White is undoubtedly a valuable player to any team he is on. The 30-year-old Colorado native, who just signed a four-year contract extension with the C’s, has made his impact most evident as part of the Celtics over the last two and a half seasons. In that time, White has risen from sixth or seventh man to a key part of the Celtics’ starting lineup.</p><p>Either one of Brown or White is a reasonable replacement for Leonard on Team USA, although Brown’s tweet, whether it is truly a reaction to White’s selection or not, could be an example of why Brown was not chosen to join the star-studded American team.</p><p>NBA reporter Keith Smith <a href="https://x.com/KeithSmithNBA/status/1811049770074374151" rel="noopener">laid out his theories</a> as to why White was selected to replace Leonard.</p><p>“I have a feeling adding Derrick White to Team USA is mostly about two things,” Smith said, “[1] They need another defensive-minded guard. Team USA has been burned in the past by not being able to defend opposing guards. [2] White won’t complain if he doesn’t play much. That’s big for chemistry.”</p><p>While Brown very easily may have accepted <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-steve-kerr-reveals-warriors-inspired-plan-for-stephen-curry-on-team-usa">whatever role</a> Steve Kerr and the Team USA coaching staff laid out for him had he been selected, cryptically tweeting after your own teammate is chosen over you does not seem like the right way to deal with that.</p><p>Regardless, it appears White, whose role grew this season after the Celtics traded Marcus Smart, will now be joining a stacked team that already includes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-bonkers-hypothetical-celtics-usa-matchup">Celtics teammates</a> Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday, as well as NBA stars LeBron James, Stephen Curry, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant, and Anthony Edwards, among others. Jayson Tatum just became one of the highest-paid players in league history with Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday, Al Horford,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-derrick-white-125-9-million-contract-extension-after-championship"> and Derrick White staying.</a> While there are a lot of adjustments that Joe Mazzulla and Brad Stevens need to make, their squad is more than willing to be patient. Nothing said that more than one of their star guards expressed a big interest in staying with the organization.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-celtics-jayson-tatum-derrick-white-deserve-every-penny-441-million-payday">Derrick White came into the Celtics roster</a> with a wonky jump shot and an above-average defensive acumen. This was enough for Brad Stevens to trust him alongside Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Over time, he developed a reliable stroke from three-point range due to Joe Mazzulla’s system. Then, the City of Boston also embraced him as one of their own. He has acclimated well into the local culture and even bought a duck boat.</p><p>It was clear as day that the Celtics had a franchise guard that wanted to stay. White even outlined his desire to remain within the system in <a href="https://x.com/ChrisForsberg_/status/1810790729498898697" rel="noopener">his latest statement</a>, via Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports.</p><p>“I said the whole time that I loved it in Boston. I was hopeful and pretty thankful that it all happened pretty quickly and I don’t have to answer questions about it all season. It was pretty easy. I just wanted to be there, they wanted me there. So, it worked out. It’s exciting. I think everybody knows how well we got along and just enjoy playing with each other. It’s just going to be a lot of fun that we don’t have to ask questions about it. He sacrificed a tooth in the process and even played a role that enabled their Jaylen Brown-Jayson Tatum duo to thrive on the court. But, that does not mean that his impact decreased. In fact, the opposite happened. His impact grew larger with the help of Joe Mazzulla and Brad Stevens’ trust.</p><p>In their 2024-25 campaign, White notched the second-highest average he had in scoring throughout his career. He knocked down 46.1% of his shots from all three levels of the floor while also having a 39.1% clip from three. All of these helped him get 15.2 points per contest. He also had a career-high year in assists. His increased ability to create shots for his teammates netted him 5.2 assists a night.</p><p>But, most of his impact was felt on the defensive side of the court. He was given the All-Defensive 2nd Team nod and even ranked eighth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Being able to get a steal and 1.2 blocks per game usually helps in that aspect of one’s stat sheet. On Monday afternoon, guard Derrick White agreed to a four-year, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-derrick-white-125-9-million-contract-extension-after-championship">$125.9 million contract extension</a> with the Green Team. Just a few hours later, star Jayson Tatum finalized a five-year, $315 supermax extension with the Celtics in what’s now the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-makes-nba-history-with-315-million-contract-extension">largest contract in NBA history</a>.</p><p>That’s over $440 million dedicated to two of Boston’s starters. The rest of the Celtics’ top five, including star Jaylen Brown, veteran guard Jrue Holiday, and center Kristaps Porzingis, are also all under contract next season.</p><p>These major moves will put the C’s over the second tax apron, resulting in plenty of restrictions under the new CBA. However, winning is the best cure for financial woes, and the Celtics did just that in the 2024 NBA Finals after dominating the Dallas Mavericks in five games.</p><p>Two weeks after winning banner no. 18, the Celtics <a href="https://x.com/celtics/status/1807830025913213132" rel="noopener">announced on Monday</a> that their current ownership group, led by Wyc Grousbeck, was planning to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-wyc-grousbeck-puts-team-up-for-sale-following-2024-championship">sell its majority interest</a> in 2024 or early 2025 at the latest. He’s a five-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA First Teamer.</p><p>Despite those impressive accomplishments, Tatum earned his best honor in June after becoming an NBA champion.</p><p>It took seven seasons, but he was rewarded for his patience with one of the best Celtics teams in recent memory. Brown, who previously held the richest contract in league history, won Finals MVP and Porzingis and Holiday were crucial offseason additions.</p><p>Tatum was the on-court commander that Boston needed in the postseason, as he led his squad in points, rebounds, and assists. He’s only the sixth player ever to lead a team in those categories while winning a championship.</p><p>When the Celtics asked him to deliver, he did. In Game 5 of the Finals, he put up one of the best performances of his playoff career, dropping 31 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists en route to a series-clinching victory. He showed that he could compete at the highest level during his rookie season after dunking on future Hall of Famer LeBron James in Game 7 of the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals.</p><p>Following that series defeat, almost every playoff failure the Celtics endured was held against Tatum. Some talking heads wondered if he’d ever win it all alongside Brown, arguing that the dynamic duo was more offensively stagnant than complementary.</p><p>The cries for a breakup grew louder, yet Tatum and Boston’s front office didn’t let the outside noise in. He gave the executives a title and they provided him with the ultimate sign of trust, a supermax extension.</p><p>Tatum made good on his promise to raise another banner in the rafters of TD Garden, and he was rewarded fairly for it. Several other stars would’ve demanded a trade at the first sign of conflict or crumbled under the championship expectations that come with playing in Boston—the 26-year-old withstood the blows and stayed the course.</p><p>It’s hard to put a price on Tatum’s experience, stardom, and maturity, but $315 million sounds like an appropriate figure.</p><h2><b>Why Derrick White’s contract is another slamdunk for the Celtics</b></h2><p>A championship doesn’t happen without high-end talent like Tatum and Brown. It also doesn’t happen without glue guys like Derrick White.</p><p>The two-way guard comes from humble beginnings, starting his collegiate basketball career in Division II. From there, White has developed into a fringe star player who probably exceeds the typical “role player” label.</p><p>Although he’s never been named to an All-Star team, White got close during the 2023-24 campaign. He averaged 15.2 points while shooting 46.1% from the floor, 39.6% from deep, and a career-high 90.1% from the charity stripe. The Colorado native averaged a career-high 1.2 blocks per game as well, the most of any guard in the entire league outside of Toronto Raptors star Scottie Barnes (who’s three inches taller than White).</p><p>Not too long after White first arrived in Beantown, he struggled in the 2022 NBA Finals. In the wake of that series disappointment, he’s been just about everything Boston could ask for in the clutch.</p><p>Take this year, for example. He notched a career-high 38 points in Game 4 of the first round against the Miami Heat and cashed the series-sealing 3-pointer in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals versus Indiana Pacers.</p><p>Then in Game 2 of the 2024 NBA Finals, White had another signature playoff moment. He’ll earn around $31.5 million a year, which isn’t as much as it used to be in the Association.</p><p>Toronto Raptors point guard Immanuel Quickley is actually getting paid more annually thanks to his new five-year, $175 million deal. While there’s no denying the 25-year-old’s talent and upside, he’s less efficient and a worse defender than White. In Boston, White has turned himself into one of the best all-around two-way guards that can make an impact in just about any facet of the game.
