They didn’t win the Summer League title, as did the Charlotte Hornets, but they had a nice turnaround in three months.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/grading-devin-booker-145-million-suns-contract-extension">Suns extended Devin Booker to a $145 million contract extension</a>. Meanwhile, the franchise traded away Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets.</p><p>Phoenix received Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft (which ultimately became Khaman Maluach), and five second-round draft picks.</p><p>The writing was on the wall when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/suns-news-kevin-durant-leaves-game-rockets-ankle-injury">Durant exited his final Suns game with an ankle injury</a>. Coincidentally, it happened to be against Houston.</p><p>During the week in Las Vegas, one Suns front office executive, according to Spotrac, detailed the Durant trade and their <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/news/_/id/2913/western-conference-summer-league-notes" rel="noopener">thought process of securing a compensatory deal</a>.</p><p>“When it became clear that was a direction we could do, we set a goal of not just going with a package of all young players and picks. We want to compete.</p><p>“We feel like getting Dillon (Brooks) and Jalen (Green), along with Khaman (Maluach) in that deal gives us a great balance of veterans, mid-career players, and a young big man to help us get after it right away,” the executive said.</p><p>Durant’s time with Phoenix was shaky, despite his contributions on the hardwood. The chemistry was there with Booker, but in the end, the furthest they reached was the second round of the NBA playoffs.</p><p>Combining that with integrating Bradley Beal and forming a “Big 3”, it was a tumultuous ending for one of the worst failed experiments in league history.</p><h2><b>Devin Booker remains with the Suns</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Devin-Booker-Suns-contract-detail-leaves-Brian-Windhorst-stunned.jpg"><figcaption>© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s not a secret how much Booker loves the Valley of the Sun. Time and time again, he repeatedly referenced his gratitude and appreciation for the city.</p><p>They drafted him as a true freshman from Kentucky, where he only played one season. Nine seasons later, Booker broke the Suns’ all-time scoring record. Those are only a glimpse of his accomplishments in the purple and orange.</p><p>When it came time to put the ink to the paper, no one was shocked. It was a mutual feeling.</p><p>“That’s our guy. He wants to be a forever Sun. We want that too. We’re well on our way to making it happen,” a Suns front office executive said.</p><p>Even with the shooting guard’s commitment to the city, the franchise needs to surround him with formidable pieces.</p><p>Despite the team being quite young with their three rookies, second-year players in Ryan Dunn, Oso Ighodaro, and Collin Gillespie, there is reason for optimism.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/suns-hire-cavs-jordan-ott-as-new-head-coach">Suns’ hiring of Jordan Ott</a> emphasized Booker being the focal point of the offense. He’s also a coach focused on continuity and excellence, something not present with the previous regime.</p><h2><b>Phoenix’s young players can make a big splash</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Ryan-Dunn.jpg"><figcaption>© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>With the players mentioned above, people forget how young Jalen Green is. While he’s been in the league since 2022, he’s only 23. Booker himself is only 28 and has been in the league for nine seasons.</p><p>There’s a youth movement on the horizon, and one that the main star has been searching for. All throughout the 2024-25 season, he raved about Dunn and Ighodaro’s mentality, and <a href="https://x.com/HaydenCilley/status/1902585563078648061" rel="noopener">how professional and impactful they were</a> as rookies.</p><p>That being said, Phoenix’s coaching staff feels the same way.</p><p>“We felt like last year’s draft class was really good. Ryan (Dunn) can be a top-tier wing/forward defender. Oso (Ighodaro) just knows how to play,” a Suns coach said. “This year, we hit a homerun. Khaman (Maluach) is going to be a top starting center before the end of his rookie deal. Everything in his profile speaks to how quickly he improves.</p><p>“Rasheer (Fleming) could play right away. Getting him in the second round was huge for us. And Koby Brea is on a two-way, but we think he was the best pure shooter in the draft. The best part, these guys are part of the identity we want to build now. A bunch of workers who defend and get after it every day.”</p><h2><b>The Suns need more balance at specific positions</b></h2><p> </p><p>The team has a logjam at a few positions. Most notably, the center spot and the wing positions are stacked with three or four players. It’s not necessarily a huge issue, but it could create a major disparity within other positions.</p><p>It’s something that the front office continues to harp on.</p><p>“Still have some work to do. We’ve got some overlap, but it’s not in bad areas. We’ve got a bunch of centers who are going to push each other every single day, and we’ve got guards and wings who will do the same.</p><p>“I’m not saying we’re done, but if this was the group we hit camp with, we feel confident that Jordan (Ott) and his staff can make it work,” a Suns front office executive said.</p><p>Their confidence in Ott is impressive. The team alone seems more connected than last season. The majority of the starters were in attendance during Phoenix’s portion of the Summer League.</p><p>With nearly three months before the season begins, their time in Las Vegas might’ve been a telling and optimistic sign of what’s to come.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Ahead of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-stephen-curry-sounds-off-whats-next-new-season-jimmy-butler">Butler and Stephen Curry’s first Warriors training camp</a> together, a YouTuber asked Jimmy who would win in a 1-on-1 matchup up to 11 against Booker.</p><p>Butler responded with not only Booker winning but that <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1947091342019969163" rel="noopener">it would be in blowout fashion</a>, per Brandon Awadis’ Twitch.</p><p>“Devin Booker. 11-0,” Butler said, giving Booker a ton of credit as a scorer.</p><p>Booker averaged 25.6 points on 46.1% shooting, a career-best 7.1 assists, and 0.9 steals per game last season. Still, it’s surprising to see Butler predict such a lopsided score. While Butler’s days of making All-Defensive Teams are behind him (2014-18, 2021), the 35-year-old wing is still known for his defensive presence, and efficient scoring.</p><p>Butler also averaged 17.9 points on 47.6% shooting, 5.9 assists, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals in 30 games for the Warriors last season. After the trade from the Miami Heat, coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-steve-kerr-reveals-what-erik-spoelstra-told-him-about-jimmy-butler">Erik Spoelstra told Steve Kerr Butler will be great</a> for him and Golden State.</p><p>At Jimmy’s stage of his career, Spoelstra reminded Kerr of Andre Iguodala’s role as the Warriors’ <a href="https://sfstandard.com/2025/05/22/steve-kerr-jonathan-kuminga-jimmy-butler-warriors/" rel="noopener">critical veteran who led them</a> to a championship as NBA Finals MVP in 2015, per The San Francisco Standard’s Tim Kawakami.</p><p>“(Heat coach) Erik Spoelstra told me immediately, he said he’s going to be great for you,” Kerr said . “And I know Spo really well from the last couple of summers, and I trust him. I just figured if you’re giving him a two-year extension, then wouldn’t you just give him…”</p><p>“No,” Tim Bontemps interjected. “The owner came out and said we have to give Devin Booker all the money. It’s a pretty easy negotiation if you’re Devin Booker and his representatives at CAA. ‘Just give us all the stuff, and we’ll sit at the table and sign.'”</p><p>Windhorst continued to marvel at the presence of a player option, which is for the 2029-30 season and worth an estimated $69.2 million.</p><p>“I want you to think about what Devin Booker got here. He essentially agreed to a one-year extension. He agreed to giving the Suns <i>one</i> more year because he got a player option in the deal, which I would not have thought was a guarantee, and he promised the Suns one additional season and guaranteed himself $140-something million. My God.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Since Booker already had several guaranteed seasons left on the extension he signed three years ago, he could only extend for two more years. They also appear to be closing in on a Bradley Beal buyout, so the team will look a whole lot different heading into 2025-26.</p><p>In place of Durant, in comes Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks from the Houston Rockets. Brooks provides a veteran presence who will be gritty on the defensive end, while Green is young and inconsistent but has mountains of offensive talent when he is on and playing with confidence.</p><p>Of course, the two of them will have to mesh with Devin Booker, the lone holdover from the Suns’ failed attempt at a “Big Three.” <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/suns-news-devin-booker-agrees-massive-145-million-contract-extension">Booker is in Phoenix for the long haul</a> after signing a new two-year contract extension worth more than $70 million per year, so Green and Brooks will have to accommodate him.</p><p>While the fit between Green and Booker has been heavily ridiculed since the trade, the G League Ignite product is excited to work with him and the <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1944797032767434959" rel="noopener">two have already connected</a> this offseason.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">"[Devin Booker] called me when I was out in Phoenix trying to look for a house… he's ready to do what we got to do this year. Green’s struggles, where he scored more than 12 points just one time in the seven-game series, likely played a big factor in the Rockets’ motivation to go after Durant and move off of Green.</p><p>Green and Booker are both score-first guards, so it’s likely that the former Rocket will have to increase his off-ball effectiveness and his playmaking in order to get the most out of that partnership. For instance, he landed Maluach, Rasheer Fleming, and Koby Brea.</p><p>The latter lit up his first Summer League game, hitting four 3-point shots. Furthermore, the team has a scrappy element to them. Every player has a chip on their shoulder, even Booker himself has something to prove.</p><p>While the team has some work to do, they have key pieces. As Charania mentioned, nearly every member of the Suns were in attendance at the Summer League. That alone is a promising sign of what’s to come.</p><p>This past season, chemistry was fickle, especially after previous head coach Mike Budenholzer told <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/suns-rumors-how-devin-booker-louder-voice-problem-mike-budenholzer">Booker to tone it down</a>, vocally.</p><p>Now, he might get the green light from new head coach, Jordan Ott.</p><p>Considering that the team is this cohesive with month of the offseason left to go, this is beyond encouraging. It makes him the highest annually paid player in NBA history.</p><p>Regardless of the lucrative contract, there are some positives, as well as some drawbacks, with the new deal. Let’s go through some of them.</p><h2><b>Devin Booker’s contract with the Suns is worrisome for the salary cap</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Devin-Booker-with-the-Suns.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Even though the move was beyond necessary, cementing nearly $70 million on the cap sheet for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons isn’t ideal.</p><p>Although he’s in his prime, one player taking nearly half of the salary cap isn’t what the doctor ordered. It’s quite the opposite.</p><p>While he could take a hometown discount, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/what-devin-booker-massive-contract-extension-means-for-suns-kevin-durant-departure">Booker earned his contract</a>. There were plenty of opportunities for him to bail on the franchise and leave for a better team.</p><p>After all, he has gone through eight head coaches in 11 seasons, something that is frowned upon. It wasn’t his decision. However, the one time he had a consistent head coach, Booker ended up taking the Suns to the 2021 NBA Finals.</p><p>Despite losing to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games, the future was bright, and it still is.</p><p>Still, his contract doesn’t leave room for signing key players, even with the mid-level exception. Signing two of those players in the MLE could put them back in the first and second tax bracket.</p><p>The upsides, though, are too good to deny.</p><h2><b>Devin Booker’s contract shows the Suns’ current stance</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Devin-Booker-1.jpg"><figcaption>© Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Keeping the franchise guard was a must, considering all he’s done, on and off the basketball court. He’s been a community man, helping with charity events and routinely making time for fans.</p><p>Furthermore, character has been a priority for the new Suns general manager Brian Gregory. During the 2025 NBA Draft, he talked about landing guys with great skill and potential, but great character.</p><p>Booker wasn’t a part of this draft, but ten years prior. He has <a href="https://www.nba.com/suns/devin-booker-surprises-arizona-girl-scouts-100000-donation-0" rel="noopener">maintained that high level of character</a>, along with his basketball acumen.</p><p>The contract also shows an unwavering commitment to the Phoenix guard in the long term. The latter has made it clear he wants to finish his career in the Valley of the Sun.</p><p>Paying him what he’s due is a first step in doing so, and they did just that.</p><p>Lastly, the Suns are set on creating a winning culture. It’s not the best situation for Booker to be in, but he’s experienced this before.</p><p>He underwent a grueling rebuild and then reached nearly the top of the mountain of NBA success. Heading into the prime of his career, this cements a long-lasting relationship between Booker and the Suns.</p><p><b>Trade Grade: B</b></p><p>The contract wasn’t a surprise, and felt overdue. Still, some ramifications include the salary cap and how other players’ contracts will be affected. Not to mention, having Booker’s salary be roughly 30-40% of the team’s cap isn’t promising.</p><p>However, showing the commitment to him and his commitment to the city made this an easy deal. It’s a “historic” contract, but one that might be everlasting, or one that will keep the team <a href="https://www.yardbarker.com/nba/articles/why_devin_booker_extension_could_hinder_suns_ability_to_rebuild/s1_13132_42435531" rel="noopener">stuck in the forbidden “in between”</a> area of being good or bad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

So there is an $18 to $21 million dollar difference between them based on the percentages of the cap. Now that raises a whole lot of thorny issues.”</p><p>Holmgren, 23, just completed his second season, averaging 15 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1.9 blocks in 32 games while shooting 49% from the field and 37.9% from three. His five-year extension is worth up to $250 million and tied to 25% of the salary cap.</p><h2><b>Zach Lowe questions Suns’ future flexibility after Devin Booker extension</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Suns-star-Devin-Booker.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. The extension will take him through age 33.</p><p>“He’s also made two All-NBA teams and finished in the top five of MVP one time,” Lowe said. “This deal will carry him through his prime… But at 35% of the cap, he’s going to be making almost $20 million more a year in those out years than Chet Holmgren will make.”</p><p>The Suns missed the playoffs this past season and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/kevin-durant-trade-grades-7-teams-blockbuster">traded Kevin Durant to the Houston Rockets</a> in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, No. 10 pick Khaman Maluach, and five second-round picks.</p><p>“I’m just not sure a guy who’s not a no-brainer top ten player in the NBA—and you pile on top of that the fact that in those years there’s going to be some amount of dead Bradley Beal money on the books,” Lowe said.</p><p>“That’s like $85 million to $90 million of your cap for those two guys. I don’t know what else you’re supposed to do if you’re Phoenix because that’s your franchise guy.”</p><p>Still, Lowe admitted the move <a href="https://youtu.be/I9yiAQWGvqU?si=mo0JUKbrby7YoSHM" rel="noopener">made him uneasy</a>.</p><p>“I just know that this deal, and I love Devin Booker, this deal made my stomach turn a little bit,” he said. “I think what the implication of that is that you just say, you know what, you’re under contract for two or three more years—we don’t need to do this now. His contract makes him the highest-paid player per season on an annual basis in league history.</p><p>However, this has felt long overdue, and only a sign of more things to come. Ever since Booker was drafted by the Suns in 2015, he’s remained loyal to the franchise, even when it was easy to back out.</p><p>For instance, he’s been through eight head coaches in 11 seasons. With the continual player movement surrounding the NBA, it felt like a matter of time, until the time never came.</p><p>Repeatedly, Booker stated his commitment to the Suns, even with tumultuous seasons. Most notably in the 2024-25, Phoenix went 36-46 and had a historically bad season.</p><p>While the former Kentucky guard himself had a solid season, the Big 3 of him, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal failed to meet expectations for a second consecutive season.</p><p>This time, they completely missed out on the playoffs, and even the play-in race. It felt all too bad to be true.</p><p>As a result, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/kevin-durant-trade-grades-rockets-suns-after-blockbuster-deal">Suns traded away Durant to the Houston Rockets</a>, in exchange for Jalen Green, Dillon Brooks, the No. 10 pick (Khaman Maluach) and a haul of second-round picks.</p><p>Luckily, Booker is only 28, and is in the midst of his prime. Someone like Green might be there, but the Suns franchise player doesn’t seem a bit concerned or worried.</p><p>That, combined with first-year head coach Jordan Ott might have many concerned that the team won’t win many games. There have been glimpses of that unwavering competitive spirit, especially in tight-knitted contests.</p><p>Throughout the 2024-25 season, Booker routinely called out the lack of a winning culture.</p><p>With a revamped squad, a first-year head coach, and limited expectations, the Suns have a chance to shock many.
