During Thursday’s shootaround, Morris explained to reporters that if there was any trash talk about the previous two playoff series he and Booker played against each other.</p><p>“I left that in 2021… that wasn’t too good,” Morris said, chuckling. “I can’t even talk about that. It’s all fun and games. When I first got here, we brought it up, bickering back and forth but he was like, ‘Yeah, we swept y’all,’ and I’m like, ‘We slept y’all last year too.’ We go back and forth, but it’s love to be on the same side.”</p><p>In 2021, the Suns eliminated the Denver Nuggets with a 4-0 series sweep. In that series, Booker averaged <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/devin-booker-stats-vs-nuggets-playoffs-2021" rel="noopener">25.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists</a> in four games. On the flip side, Morris averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/2021-nba-western-conference-semifinals-nuggets-vs-suns.html" rel="noopener">11.3 points, 1.5 rebounds, and five assists</a> while only starting in one game.</p><h2>Monte Morris got his revenge on Devin Booker and the Suns</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Suns-Monte-Morris-teases-friendly-feud-with-Devin-Booker-1.jpg"><figcaption>© Brad Rempel-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Fast forward three years, it was the inverse. Morris joined the Minnesota Timberwolves and faced the Suns in the first round. This time, Morris and his squad had the upper hand on his current team. Booker still played great, averaging <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/playoffs/2024-nba-western-conference-first-round-suns-vs-timberwolves.html" rel="noopener">27.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and six assists</a> while playing 41.5 minutes per game. Despite the superstar performance, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-most-to-blame-for-embarrassing-playoff-sweep-at-hands-of-timberwolves">Suns were ultimately swept</a>.</p><p>Morris didn’t see much playing time like he did in 2021, as he only played 9.7 minutes per game. Regardless, the Timberwolves advanced to the Western Conference Finals where they were knocked out by the Dallas Mavericks. Uncertainty loomed large as the Suns Big 3 seemed to take down any possible team. However, signing Morris and also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-tyus-jones-major-factor-join-suns">acquiring Tyus Jones</a> helps with having the offense run smoothly.</p><p>As Morris reflected on that series and playing against Booker, he’s glad they’re joining forces and not going against each other.</p><p>“He’s just a competitor, bro,” Morris said. “Book is a guy who always wants to win. He’s chippy, he talked trash and he backed it up. I’m just happy I’m on his side with him this time.”</p><p>The Suns are set to take on the Detroit Pistons on Friday, after facing off on Tuesday. In that game, Morris made his impact with the second unit. He and rookie Oso Ighodaro dominated the pick-and-roll all game long. Also, Morris had some time running the floor with Booker. His 6’9 wingspan helps him guard bigger guards and forwards. </p><p>On the flip side, Booker’s defense has progressed year by year. In the Olympics was the first instance of the Suns guard being a true lockdown. While the athletes are different overseas than in the United States, defending at a high level can translate to whoever someone plays. </p><p>Offensively, this is where the two stars differ. Both are excellent scorers but have an interesting way of doing it. Edwards uses his athleticism and ball-handling to get to the rim at ease. He’s also been a solid catch-and-shoot player as well. Furthermore, he averaged 6.4 free throws per game, one more free throw than the previous season. The blend has <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-side-side-anthony-edwards-michael-jordan-dunking-suns-goes-viral">led to viral dunks</a>, among other things.</p><p>For Booker, his offensive game isn’t as flashy as Edwards but is more fundamentally sound. His unique blend of <a href="https://coachnatehartman.com/devin-booker-pick-and-roll-pace/" rel="noopener">utilizing the pick-and-roll</a>, along with the mid-range shot is extremely effective. Booker’s touch with the ball has helped him develop a nice interior presence too. He may not dunk on everyone like Edwards but using both hands and angling shots is just as effective.</p><h2><b>Can Devin Booker overtake Anthony Edwards as the top shooting guard?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Suns-Devin-Booker-dissed-in-favor-of-Anthony-Edwards.jpg"><figcaption>© David Frerker-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>A new system will do wonders for Booker. While Frank Vogel was a solid head coach, he didn’t implement a steady offensive system. As a result, Booker, Kevin Durant, and Bradley Beal took turns running the floor. It wasn’t bad by any means but it limited the offensive skill sets of all of those players. With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-tyus-jones-agrees-to-3-3-million-contract">Suns signing Tyus Jones</a>, the offense can now run through a traditional point guard. Someone who can let Booker score at will and not have to focus solely on facilitating.</p><p>Because of this, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-kevin-durant-identifies-issue-must-address">Suns can limit turnovers</a>, something that they’ve worked on since the start of training camp. Booker should have the ball in his hands but shouldn’t have to create his offense 100% of the time. Having Beal and Durant to play off should help immensely. Even in Phoenix’s first preseason game, there was tons of off-ball movement, and short rolls to the basket by Booker.</p><p>Statistically, it may not be in Booker’s favor as Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns was recently traded to the New York Knicks. It’ll force Edwards to take more of an offensive weight but might dip his percentages. Both teams’ records should be significantly different from the previous season. Minnesota ended as the No. 3 seed while Phoenix fell to the No. 6. seed.</p><p>Beal believed that the Suns <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-bradley-beal-bold-1-seed-take-injury-riddled-season">could’ve been the No. 1 seed</a> had injuries not stepped in the way. While it’s uncertain what seed Phoenix could obtain, they certainly seem more promising. The last time Booker had a true point guard was with Chris Paul and they secured the No. 2 and No. 1 seed within Paul’s first two seasons. Booker had some of his most efficient seasons with Paul dictating the offense.</p><p>It’s unknown if Booker will overtake Edwards in the eyes of NBA GMs. If there is an opportunity for that to happen though, it’s this season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Moreover, their offensive firepower was no match for the Wolves’ smothering defense, who swept them in dominating fashion. All but one of their wins was in double digits.</p><p>In the offseason, the team decided that Frank Vogel’s defensive-minded philosophy didn’t match his players who liked to shoot the leather off the ball. So, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-frank-vogel-fired-disappointing-playoff-exit-vs-timberwolves">Suns canned Vogel</a> and replaced him with Mike Budenholzer, coach of the Bucks team that beat them in the 2021 Finals.</p><p>Still, the Suns aren’t a lost cause. Devin Booker is a certified playoff performer, averaging 27.5 points and 6.0 assists in the 2024 playoffs. Likewise, Durant also put up 26.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in the sweep. Perhaps one of their problems is that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-phoenix-blockbuster-bradley-beal-trade-wizards">newly acquired Bradley Beal</a> didn’t quite match their production, only scoring 16.5 points on 44.1% shooting.</p><h2><b>What went wrong with the Big 3?</b></h2><p>The risk in putting together a top-heavy team is that Booker, Durant, and Beal will have to go nuclear every game just to give the team a chance to win. While Durant and Booker are great enough to overcome opponents’ defensive schemes, Beal hasn’t proven that he can break defenses in a playoff series.</p><p>Teams would rather let Durant and Booker get 40 each playing iso on the wing if they can shut down the rest of the team. It’s not like the Heatles of old who turned LeBron James into their offensive hub, either passing to their shooters or calling his own shot.</p><p>Recognizing this need, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-tyus-jones-agrees-to-3-3-million-contract">Suns signed Tyus Jones</a> to help set the table for the trio. The shoes feature tiny hits of orange along the BOOK tongue logo as well as the eyestays. We see skeleton-like stitching coming together to form the typical Nike Swoosh and we see a similar font spelling the “Chapter One” inscription on the pull tab. Finally, the shoes are finished in a Light Bone midsole that turns black on the inner sides of the shoe. All in all, these look like a perfect release for the first of many Nike Halloween releases for this upcoming year.</p><p>The Nike Book 1 “Halloween” is slated to release October 30, 2024 and are expected to come with a retail tag of $140. The Americans needed all of his threes, too, first in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-stephen-curry-helps-team-usa-ice-serbia-with-insane-comeback">Team USA’s semifinal comeback against Serbia</a> and in the clutch of the gold medal game to seal their victory. What’s even more incredible is that he had made only five threes prior to the Serbia game, where the Warriors legend scored 36 with nine made threes. With 36 points, he was one bucket shy of beating <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-carmelo-anthony-record-safe-stephen-curry">Carmelo Anthony’s all-time Olympic record</a> of points scored in a game. Current NBA players couldn’t help but wonder at Curry’s performance, even if they must have hated seeing his heroics against their team. Just ask Devin Booker, for example.</p><p>“He’s the best shooter to ever live,” Booker said.</p><h2><b>Stephen Curry’s push for Team USA gold</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Devin-Booker-celebrating-an-Olympic-gold-medal.jpg"><figcaption>© Rob Schumacher-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Stacking a roster full of All-Stars who are all first or second options on their NBA teams could be a recipe for disaster, but high-stakes games tend to form the team’s hierarchy for them. For example, when the game gets tough, and in the clutch, who gets the ball? For the two games in the medal rounds, the answer was Stephen Curry. After scoring 36 to beat Serbia, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-stephen-curry-leads-team-usa-bonkers-record-france">Curry chipped in with eight made threes</a> for 24 total points. Four of these threes were consecutive shots to seal the gold for the Americans. The last three even looked like a heat check, a <a href="https://apnews.com/article/2024-olympics-stephen-curry-2b0fba8be8fb6f9cf12c48a67dec6a8a?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=share" rel="noopener">one-footed heave</a> over a double-team of Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier, a shot that would make any coach slam his clipboard in anger if it were any other player.</p><p>“I was kind of like, ‘What the f**k,'” Bam Adebayo said of the gold-clinching shot. “Then I remembered who was shooting it.”</p><p>If you want to know how to overcome a shooting slump, just ask Curry. He had only averaged seven points in the group stage and made only five of 20 three-point attempts.</p><p>“You just stay confident, stay present and don’t get rattled by the moment,” the Warriors star <a href="https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/40811929/team-usa-wins-fifth-straight-men-basketball-gold-medal" rel="noopener">said</a>. “There’s a lot of faith, living with shots that you think you should take.”</p><p>Meanwhile, Devin Booker also scored 15 points to win his second gold medal, impressively changing his role to fit in better with the team.</p><h2><b>Olympics MVP</b></h2><p>While the Warriors icon’s legendary shooting won the Americans the gold, his teammate and storied rival <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lebron-james-olympics-mvp-win-splits-team-usa-fans">LeBron James won the Olympics MVP</a>. James had notched a triple-double against Serbia and he was four rebounds shy of doing it again versus France. In the gold medal game, James had 14 points, six rebounds, and ten assists. Throughout the games, he averaged 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 8.5 assists on 66% shooting.</p><p>After nearly a decade of intense rivalry, it’s only right for James and Curry to lead Team USA to a gold medal in what may have been the last Olympics of their careers.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
