The team is trading guard Devonte’ Graham and a second-round draft pick to the Charlotte Hornets, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>In return, the Hornets are paying the former Kansas Jayhawks star the $2.85 million partial guarantee in his contract. The selling point for them is the future asset, though, not Graham. Hence, they are waiving the No. 34 overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft.</p><p>Graham scored just 5.0 points per contest on 35.2 percent shooting from the floor in 23 games for the Spurs. There could still be a couple of teams out there who want to take a shot on the former consensus First-Team All-American.</p><p>While Charlotte maps out its long-term vision under new executive vice president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson, San Antonio could be setting itself up for a big deal some time soon. The Spurs puzzled people by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-draft-news-timberwolves-trade-way-up-get-rob-dillingham-spurs-no-9">trading the rights</a> of incoming rookie Rob Dillingham to the Minnesota Timberwolves, but the organization’s intentions seem more clear following this maneuver.</p><p>Victor Wembanyama displayed instincts and poise far beyond his years in his inaugural NBA campaign in 2023-24, so there is pressure on ownership to commit to building a formidable squad around him now rather than waiting for things to naturally take shape the next couple of seasons. Gregg Popovich and company are bringing in 12-time All-Star Chris Paul to expedite the process, but another established talent can quickly make the Spurs relevant in the West.</p><p>Who would they consider targeting, though?</p><h2><b>The big splash the Spurs could make this offseason</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Lauri-Markkanen-concentrates-on-the-free-throw-line.jpg"><figcaption>Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Although this young squad should benefit tremendously from Paul’s veteran leadership, it skill needs an influx of shooters, or at least a high-end one who can significantly impact the game. Trae Young is the name that immediately comes to mind for many people. That might no longer be a practical route for San Antonio to explore, however.</p><p>Trade interest for the Atlanta Hawks star point guard is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-trae-youngs-chilly-trade-market-hit-with-lakers-spurs-updates">said to be low</a> due to the franchise’s high asking price. Considering the Spurs just used a top-five draft selection on national champion Stephon Castle and signed Chris Paul in free agency, they might find it unnecessary to invest a ton of capital in Young. Instead, their focus may turn to acquiring a versatile forward.</p><p>Lauri Markkanen has broken out with the Utah Jazz, averaging 24.5 points and 8.4 rebounds while knocking down 39.5 percent of his 3-pointer attempts in his last two seasons with the team. He has one year remaining on his contract, making him a natural candidate to be shipped out elsewhere. San Antonio is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-warriors-spurs-among-teams-with-substantial-lauri-markkanen-trade-offers-on-table">firmly in pursuit</a> of the 27-year-old Finn, per reports.</p><p>It remains to be seen if the Spurs will go all in for a bigger name this summer, but the Devonte’ Graham trade suggests that they have a distinct plan in mind. When I played there, he was definitely the GOAT. Once I got traded, it became LeBron.”</p><p>Graham of course made his NBA debut for the team that Jordan owned, the Charlotte Hornets. He played for the Hornets for three seasons before being traded to the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021. Last year, Graham was traded again, this time to the San Antonio Spurs.</p><p>Jordan still tops James overall in HoopsHype’s poll, 49 percent to 37 percent. Kobe Bryant comes in third with nine percent, while Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant, Larry Bird, Dwyane Wade, and Bill Russell each claim a single percentage point.</p><p>Lakers guard Spencer Dinwiddie voted for his teammate LeBron.</p><p>“LeBron because I judge it on who I’d draft No. 1 in an all-time draft,” Dinwiddie told HoopsHype. “He’s had 20-plus years of basically going to the Conference Finals. I’d say globally, LeBron is a bigger icon, like business included. I think Jordan is a bigger hero, in a sense, just because he was so different from what we had seen. We’d already seen dominant guards and wings once LeBron came in.”</p><p>Meanwhile, KJ Martin made the case for MJ as the best the NBA has ever seen.</p><p><b>“</b>I feel like you have to take into account what you do on the basketball court, but also the impact off the court. Jordan’s shoes are a big thing. I think they’re always going to sell. I couldn’t imagine if social media was a thing when he was playing how much more — even though he’s already known worldwide – I feel like it would be on a different level. One, his son is in the draft, and he’s expressed on a number of occasions and sometimes more hotly than others. ”</p><p>Windhorst then elaborates on what LeBron’s thought process may be when considering opting out of his NBA contrac.</p><p>“Number one, you know the draft is June 27th or 28th…whatever it is, and free agency starts July 1st. So LeBron having his free agency open during the draft could be beneficial. The second reason is that LeBron does not have a no-trade clause in his contract and if he picks up an option in the deal he can’t get a no-trade clause.</p><p>At the trade deadline this year, there were conversations between the Warriors and the Lakers about him. Now I wouldn’t think that the Lakers would ever trade him, and certainly would never trade him without his consent, but why not get a no-trade clause if you could get it, and you can’t get it without opting out.”</p><p>Whether James opts out, stays put, or retires altogether this offseason is going to be something for NBA fans to watch.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

To be honest, I would be happy for everybody, but I’m very happy for Devonte’, because I feel like he deserves it, and he’s a great player.”</p><h2><b>The Graham ending big picture</b></h2><p>Though he’s played in just 22 of the team’s 81 games, including six this month as the Spurs have sustained injuries to four of their rotational players down the stretch, Graham as seen consistent minutes over his career. During the 2019-20 season, he averaged 18.2 points per game with the Charlotte Hornets.</p><p>“I’ve been in a lot of games like this and made some big buckets before, but I think you have to shout out guys,” Graham said.</p><p>“Mamu had an unbelievable game, Obviously, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-gets-bold-top-30-player-take-former-spurs-forward">Vic [Victor Wembanyama] has been doing</a> this all year. But we were down 25 And Zach [Collins] came in the huddle and told us to pick our energy up. I think that was our turning point and we went on a run from there,” Graham added.</p><p>After playing plenty for San Antonio last season following an in-season trace, including eight starts, Graham has stayed ready in 2023-24 despite just 13.4 minutes per game the rare times he would see the court.</p><p>“He was the same cloth, the same species,” Popovich said in rounding out the comparison to five-time champion, Steve Kerr and Danny Ferry, who won a ring with the Spurs in 2003.</p><p>“He busted his ass all year long,” the Hall of Famer continued about Graham. “He was always ready. I’m sure he didn’t like it, but he was always there for his team. Four years ago, he averaged 18.2 points per game with the Charlotte Hornets. This season, he’s played in just 18 of 77 possible games for a San Antonio team that’s struggled as they begin to embark on their rebuild. Instead of sulking, the 29-year-old guard has taken the opposite approach.</p><p>“Life’s not really that bad. Wake up, get to travel, eat a lot of good food. Paid flights, charter flights. If not playing basketball is the worst thing that’s going on in my life, I think I’m doing pretty well.”</p><p>“Devonte’ was superb,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich added following the one-time New Orleans Pelican’s performance vs. his former team on Friday night.</p><p>Graham led the shorthanded Spurs in scoring with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hornets-news-devonte-graham-sets-record-most-bench-points-in-franchise-history">20 points</a> in a 111-109 victory.</p><h2><b>Devonte’ Graham steps up in rare opportunity</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Graham-and-Jose-Alavarado.jpg"><figcaption>Mandatory Credit: Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Continuing a recent trend that coincides with <a href="https://www.poundingtherock.com/2024/4/5/24122530/spurs-pelicans-final-score-play-in-victor-wembanyama" rel="noopener">injuries</a> sustained by key Spurs players, the 25 minutes Graham played vs. the Pelicans were easily a season high. Off the heels of a then season high 19 minutes in Tuesday’s loss to the Denver Nuggets and 18 minutes, also at the time a season high, vs. the  Golden State Warriors on Sunday, Graham’s previous season high was 17 minutes back on November 14th in a 36-point blowout against the Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>On Friday, Devonte’ Graham’s five assists trailed just Victor Wembanyama’s nine.</p><p>“We can only salute the team effort,” Wemby said following the Spurs <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-nearly-bags-historic-quadruple-double-nuggets-clash">fourth win</a> in their last six games.</p><p>“Everyone knew to step up. I think about some guys who don’t usually have minutes, but also, like Devonte’, who had one of the biggest roles tonight. I just think everything worked out. We fit together tonight as a team,” the generational talent continued.</p><p>With the Spurs missing Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Jeremy Sochan, their second, third and fourth leading scorers in that order, Sandro Mamukelashvili drew his first start of the season.</p><p>“I’m so proud of Devonte’ because I know it’s not easy,” the 6-foot-9 forward said. “I feel like he’s a professional. He kept his head, he kept his composure and attacked with a full strength.”</p><p>Mamukelashvili proved to be another reason the Spurs recorded their 19th win of the season.</p><h2><b>Sandro Mamukelashvili also comes up big for shorthanded Spurs</b></h2><p>Like Graham, Mamukelashvili also recorded a season in playing time. And like Graham, he put those extra minutes to good use with a season high 15 points and five rebounds.</p><p>“Sandro was superb,” his Hall of Fame coach said.</p><p>“It’s a great feeling,” Mamukelashvili admitted. “Whenever you get your chance, you just come out there and you believe in yourself. You believe that it’s happening and you’re going to take advantage of your opportunity.”</p><p>Popovich praised the entire team, especially the players who don’t usually see the court.</p><p>“Overall, it took a good number of people to keep up the energy. We started out slow in the first half but in the second half we came around physically and played better.” the winningest coach in NBA history added. “The contributions from a lot of guys that haven’t played a lot.”</p><p>“I feel like we worked hard for this moment. We’ve just got to finish strong,” Mamukelashvili said.</p><p>Thanks, in part, to two of the Spurs who’ve played the least, San Antonio is enjoying one of its best stretches of the season with wins in four of their last six games.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

In an appearance last month on the Run Your Race podcast hosted by Theo Pinson &amp; AJ Richardson, Graham heaped praises on Ingram’s ways on the court that <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1686390953077342208" rel="noopener">speak louder than words</a>.</p><p><i>“[Brandon Ingram] one of them ones. And he don’t say too much at all,</i>” Graham said.</p><p>Pinson chimed in and said that the Pelicans forward was a headache for him defensively.</p><p><i>“I have went on record and I have said he is one of the hardest players that I’ve ever guarded,”</i> Pinson said.</p><p>Graham then underscored some of the reasons why Ingram is a top-tier player in the league.</p><p><i>“B.I. is elite. He don’t see nobody when he pulls up to shoot. He passing, he make everybody better. Scoring, effortless.”</i></p><p>Graham surely knows what he was talking about Graham, as he played with the former Duke Blue Devils star with the Pelicans from 2021 to 2023. Now with the San Antonio Spurs after the Pels traded him to their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-tim-duncan-who-devonte-graham-sets-wild-record-never-seen-in-san-antonio-history" rel="noopener">Southwest division rivals</a> last February, Graham will be playing alongside another lanky but uber-talented star in rookie Victor Wembanyama.</p><p>There is no denying that Ingram is among the best scorers in the league, as he just averaged a career-high 24.7 points per game in the 2022-23 NBA regular season, though, injuries limited him to playing only 45 contests. Nevertheless, there are high hopes for the Pelicans that Ingram — and Zion Williamson — will be healthy for an entire season to make New Orleans a legitimate playoff contender, at the very least.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
