He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Olympics</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>On Tuesday, Jamal Murray and Team Canada were eliminated from the Olympics with an 82-73 loss to Victor Wembanyama and Team France. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-news-jamal-murray-poor-olympic-performance-impact-future">Murray has struggled</a> throughout the Olympics dating back to the friendly competitions several weeks ago, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/shai-gilgeous-alexander-drops-truth-bomb-on-team-usa">and Team Canada</a>, viewed by some to be the biggest challenger to the American national team, is now going home without a medal.</p><p>On Tuesday, Murray’s struggles continued, as he put up just seven points on 3/13 field goals.</p><p>The poor stat line, combined with his prior inconsistencies in Paris this year, led the good folks over on X, formerly Twitter, to send some insults in his direction.</p><p>“Watching Jamal Murray play basketball for my country has been a pretty miserable experience,” wrote one user.</p><p>Meanwhile, Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer broke down Murray’s horrid Olympics showing and wondered what the implications could be for his Denver Nuggets back in the NBA.</p><p>“Jamal Murray in the Olympics: 6 Points Per Game 41.2% From 2 (7-of-17) 14.3% From 3 (2-of-14) A total negative for Canada. Just like he was for stretches of this past season for the Denver Nuggets. Both of those players are on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-anthony-edwards-reveals-team-usas-true-alpha-after-no-1-option-comment">Team USA for the Paris Olympics</a> and will face Brooks and the rest of Team Canada on Wednesday July 10, where the Rockets forward says he wants to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5625561/2024/07/09/dillon-brooks-team-canada-usa-olympic-basketball/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=twhq&amp;source=twitterhq" rel="noopener">“make a statement”</a> according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.</p><p>“I take it as (just) another game, but me being who I am, I like to make a statement,” Brooks said, the Canadian born forward who averaged 12.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game while shooting 42.8 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from deep. “So I’ll be ready to play. Team Canada will be ready to play, and we’re gonna go balls to the wall and watch the film after and see if we got better.”</p><h2><b>Team Canada’s Dillon Brooks speaks on Team USA’s new look </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Canada-star-Dillon-Brooks-during-a-Rockets-game-on-April-11-2024.jpg"><figcaption>Rob Gray-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There also could be some bad blood <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-anthony-edwards-gets-real-about-best-american-player-label">between Team USA and Canada</a> since in the FIBA World Cup in September of 2023, Canada won the bronze medal, the first time the country has won a medal in the event, as they beat USA in the game to decide the honors. Adding on the rivalry between the two countries and what Brooks has with several players on the other side, there is no doubt it will be ultra competitive even if it is only an exhibition game.</p><p>There is a huge difference with this Team USA unit compared to the aforementioned FIBA World Cup as the Paris Olympics team is now loaded with talent like James, Curry, and a bevy of other players. Those other stars include Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Tyrese Haliburton, Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Jrue Holiday, and Kawhi Leonard.</p><p>In the FIBA World Cup, with such players as Edwards and Haliburton the only returners, there is no doubt that while that team had talent, it was not enough to win any medal. Right after that event and<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/olympics-news-steve-kerr-take-lebron-james-stephen-curry-duo-scare-team-usa-rivals"> Canada beat USA with</a> Brooks scoring 39 points, there was reports from The Athletic of James intending to join the squad and recruited other superstars to do the same. For the Canadian-born player, it adds extra motivation that they bolstered their team.</p><p>“Yeah, because there’s new USA players, you know, that spoke up after (the bronze-medal game), and wanted to play,” Brooks said, who previously played for the Memphis Grizzlies before Houston. “So, you know, I’m happy that they’re playing because, you know, we get to test our talents against theirs. And you know, it should be a fun one.”</p><h2><b>Brooks excited for the new challenge to face Team USA on Team Canada</b></h2><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cooper-flagg-claims-team-usa-has-no-weaknesses">With Team USA</a> now likely being heavily favored against Canada and probably to win the gold medal, other teams will be seen as the underdog. However, Canada still has a foundation and a bevy other stars besides Brooks like Oklahoma City Thunder standouts Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort along with Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray.</p><p>“Well at the beginning, it was Steph and LeBron that came out and said something, and then everyone else started joining on,” Brooks said. “I’m happy that they made the commitment, so let’s see. Talent against talent.”</p><p>There is no doubt that the offensive talent for Team USA is other worldly as it is filled with the best players in the NBA which is why they are heavily favored to begin with. However, Brooks brings their expectations back to reality by saying that their competitors have to “guard” and “play defense” against Canada as they are not a team to look ahead.</p><p>“They’ve gotta guard. They’ve gotta play defense. That’s my main thing,” Brooks said via The Athletic. “Every team that has to play against us has to guard, has to scout against us. And we’re just going to play our game and make adjustments during the game.”</p><h2><b>Brooks warns people to not count out Team Canada for Paris Olympics</b></h2><p>While Canada got the bronze medal in the FIBA World Cup, they have their eyes set on an even bigger prize, but now their North American counterparts down South are in their way. Brooks would give his pitch for his country, saying that this year is their “time” and they are going for the “gold.”</p><p>“The belief was always there; we just had to put it together,” Brooks said. “Now we’ve got a lot of players that are committed, willing to build this every single summer to get better and better and build chemistry and build camaraderie. Our time was last year. And now (it’s) our time for this year. Brooks has gotten into other altercations with NBA veterans recently as well as Draymond Green and LeBron James are two others that have had somewhat similar experiences with Brooks. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-demar-derozan-named-possible-paul-george-back-up-plan-for-clippers">Both DeRozan and</a> Brooks got ejected after their scuffle, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-demar-derozan-real-how-raptors-trade-damaged-mental-health">and DeRozan recently admitted</a> on a podcast that he doesn’t like Brooks.</p><p>During a recent episode of <i>The 25/10 Show, </i>DeMar DeRozan discussed the altercation that he had with Dillon Brooks. He was upset that Brooks came up behind him when he wasn’t looking.</p><p>“I’m not going to lie, I <a href="https://youtu.be/nZmSAqE0R6k?t=4819" rel="noopener">just don’t like him</a>,” DeRozan said. “And for two, don’t walk up behind me, that’s rule number one, don’t walk up on no man behind him when his back’s turned.”</p><p>DeRozan also noted that him and Draymond Green will go back and forth when they’re playing against each other, but they’re friends, so it’s different. He isn’t friends with Brooks, so he doesn’t like the way that he talks.</p><p>“Don’t run up behind me, and just don’t talk s**t, I respect everybody,” DeRozan said. “Now if you’re my man, me and Draymond [Green] talk crazy to each other but that’s my man.”</p><h2><b>DeMar DeRozan has another rule</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/DeMar-DeRozan-Dillon-Brooks.jpg"><figcaption>© Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>DeSean Jackson was also on the podcast with DeMar DeRozan, and he brought up another rule that DeRozan has.</p><p>DeSean Jackson: “And the other rule you can’t forget, don’t punch me if, what did you say about your birthday?”</p><p>DeMar Derozan: “Yeah don’t hit me, if we don’t talk every day, don’t hit me on my birthday man.”</p><p>Well, DeRozan can certainly be added to the list of NBA players that do not like Dillon Brooks. Brooks has been in the NBA for seven seasons now, and he isn’t looking to make a lot of friends on teams that aren’t his. He is becoming known for instances like the one he had with DeRozan, and he has gotten under the skin of several veteran players now. It was a competitive battle to say the least. Kyrie Irving led the Mavs with 48 points, while Luka Doncic added 37 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds.</p><p>However, the Mavs trailed in the final seconds of the contest before Dante Exum connected on a three-pointer as time expired to tie the game at 129. Dallas did not look back and went on to earn the victory in overtime.</p><p>It was a physical game throughout. Rockets rookie Amen Thompson <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1777064134632247367">was ejected</a> in the first quarter after shoving Maxi Kleber to the floor. The teams went back-and-forth all game.</p><p>Dillon Brooks, who is known for frustrating opponents, played physical defense on Luka throughout the affair. Doncic still performed well, but Brooks did not back down. To Brooks’ credit, he enjoyed a solid offensive game.</p><p>The players exchanged words during the affair as well. Doncic did not mind the challenge. In fact, he appeared to embrace it.</p><p>On one play, Doncic caused Brooks to <a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportsSW/status/1777084357917749402" rel="noopener">lose his footing</a> after a nice move. Doncic said the Mavericks don’t need more motivation in the postseason given the magnitude of the playoffs, but he credited Brooks’ effort against him.</p><p>“I don’t think you need more motivation when it’s playoffs,” Doncic said. “But you know, he’s a great defender and you take on the challenge.”</p><p>Doncic finished the game with 37 points, 12 assists, and nine rebounds as aforementioned. But it was Kyrie Irving who led the charge in the fourth quarter and throughout the contest, scoring 48 points.</p><p>Irving knew the game would be competitive, <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeyMistretta_/status/1777125583840751861" rel="noopener">something he attributed</a> to an “Ime Udoka team.”</p><p>“I think I could have done a better job of having a deeper conversation with my teammates about what to expect from an Ime Udoka team, especially after we played them in Houston and we beat them the way we did,” Irving said. “Just the back-and-forth of that… banter. It could go one of two ways. You just want to stay poised emotionally and continue to work the game. I think Luka did a great job of that. I think Dillon was trying to bait him to get his sixth (foul) a few times. It just comes with it.</p><p>“High IQ players, emotionally poised players go further along. So you just got to be a great thinker, be able to play through some of that physical contact. That’s what I’ve been getting ready for for these past few years. I haven’t forgotten Ime Udoka’s team, Boston Celtics beat me 4-0. And how they just brought the physicality to us. We didn’t know how to respond at that time. They were just more prepared… As a competitor I don’t forget things like that. Systems carry on with coaches, so you can see that they have taken on that Ime Udoka identity so to speak.”</p><p>Doncic and Udoka also exchanged some words during the game. Irving made huge basket after huge basket as the Mavs continued to climb back into the game. The Rockets refused to go away, however. As mentioned earlier, Houston led in the final seconds before Exum hit the game-trying three.</p><p>And the Mavs ultimately took care of business in overtime.</p><p>“I was talking to coach in that timeout, I was like, ‘what’s the play… What are we doing?'” Exum said of the moments leading up to his game-tying shot at the end of the fourth quarter. “Obviously I knew they were going to try and double (Luka Doncic), so it was just about not getting the offensive foul at first and then just setting up my feet. He played a lesser role in Toronto but the fact he won a ring made it more than worth it. Gasol played his final year in the NBA with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers and called it a career in 2021.</p><p>On top of his success in the NBA, Marc Gasol has also won two silver medals in the Olympics, as well as two FIBA Basketball World Cup titles playing for Spain. He’s one of the best international players to come out of Spain and is a true legend of the sport.</p><p>With that said, congrats to Marc Gasol for having an illustrious career in and out of the NBA. But on Thursday night, the Warriors showed that they are still a class above the Rockets, securing a 133-110 victory on the road that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-playoff-race-2024-warriors-rockets-battle-play-in-tournament">extends their lead</a> for the 10th spot in the standings to four games. In such a crucial game, it was important for the Warriors to set the tone, and that’s exactly what Klay Thompson did.</p><p>With only three and a half minutes having gone by in the first quarter, the Dubs found themselves on a two on four fastbreak; the smart option was to pull the ball back, but Thompson had immense confidence to pull up from three, over an elite defender and a sworn nemesis in Dillon Brooks, no less. Brooks has irritated every member of the Warriors franchise and its fanbase, thanks in large part to his questionable actions on the court during their tussle in the second round of the 2022 NBA playoffs.</p><p>The Warriors disliked Brooks ever since he injured Gary Payton II on a dangerous play, and since then, Brooks has relished being the villain in the eyes of the Dubs. Klay Thompson has had his tense moments with Brooks as well; on Christmas Day 2022, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-dillon-brooks-nsfw-callout-referees-klay-thompson-taunt">Thompson taunted Brooks</a>, who was on the ground at the time, after nailing a three in his face, and then in March 2023, Thompson reminded Brooks of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-dillon-brooks-reacts-klay-thompson-4-rings-taunt-after-grizzlies-win">how many rings</a> he has.</p><p>Since then, however, another team has caught Dillon Brooks’ eyes — the Los Angeles Lakers. Brooks has made it a mission to be the best LeBron James irritant he can be, which has shoved his rivalry with the Warriors aside. But this latest interaction between Thompson and Brooks might pave the way for it to be re-ignited.</p><h2><b>Warriors virtually seal play-in spot</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Warriors-guard-Stephen-Curry-30-celebrates-with-guard-Klay-Thompson-11.jpg"></figure><p>The Warriors still have not mathematically sealed a spot in the play-in tournament. They have a four-game lead over the Rockets with six games to go, so they could still possibly lose all games and miss out on the postseason if Houston goes unbeaten the rest of the way. Nonetheless, that looks rather unlikely, and in the unlikely event that the Rockets tie the Warriors in the standings, the Dubs own the tiebreaker anyway (3-0 in the season series).</p><p>As things stand, the Warriors are headed towards a collision course against the Lakers in the 9/10 matchup of the play-in tournament. Brooks is certainly no stranger to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bulls-news-demar-derozan-rockets-dillon-brooks-ejected-after-wild-on-court-scuffle">on court antics</a>, but was he at fault at all in <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1773164557797626100" rel="noopener">this situation</a>?</p><p>Rockets forward Jabari Smith Jr. was seated on the floor following a stoppage in the game when Giddey came over to offer him a hand up. Smith did not acknowledge Giddey at which point Giddey forcibly grabs Smith and attempts to pull him up.</p><p>Smith looked visibly upset by Giddey’s actions and Brooks came running over to his teammate’s aid and shoved Giddey. Everything escalated from there with players from both teams getting up in each other’s faces. But who was at fault for escalating the situation? In most situations, when a player refuses an opposing player’s help, the opposing player just walks away and leaves it at that.</p><p>What could have escalated everything was Giddey taking it upon himself to try and pull Smith up. Maybe Brooks could have reacted differently, but a case can be made that the Rockets had a right to be upset at Giddey’s actions. But it’s possible that suspensions might come down as well. The NBA has a rule that players who leave the bench during an altercation receive an automatic one game suspension.</p><p>Both the Rockets and the Thunder can’t afford to lose players from this fight as they are both batting for playoff positioning in the Western Conference. Green winced in pain as he lay on the hardwood floor. Multiple fans seemed surprised that DeRozan didn’t get ejected for his hockey style crosscheck, or perhaps football style tackle, depending on how it was viewed.</p><p>“DeMar a loser for that,” one fan said. “WTF, Why didn’t DeRozan get the boot after the tackle?” another fan wondered aloud in the comments section.</p><p>Brooks, who infamously called LeBron James “old” during last year’s playoffs with the Memphis Grizzlies, was on fire prior to his ejection, racking up 23 points in 25 minutes while grabbing two rebounds. Green had 26 points, four rebounds and three assists while the Bulls; DeRozan scored 16 points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out two assists on the evening before his ejection.</p><p>The Rockets won 127-117 and are scheduled to take on the Utah Jazz on Saturday at home, with questions swirling as to whether or not Brooks will be in uniform.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Exactly a week <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-gregg-popovich-unfiltered-take-rockets-whooping" rel="noopener">after losing to Houston</a> in a game Wemby scored 10 while tweaking his right ankle, the generational prospect scored 13 points on Tuesday in a <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/202403120SAS.html" rel="noopener">103-101 loss</a>. When the two met in December, Wembanyama managed just 15 points.</p><p>ClutchPoints asked this past summer’s top overall draft pick if he thinks the Rockets guard him more aggressively than any opponent in the NBA.</p><p>“I can’t really tell because this is a long season, and teams change strategies mid-season. There are no different scouts. Bring different things to different players. Glad I can be a versatile defender, guarding [Victor Wembanyama] or guarding Paul George,” the veteran out of Oregon said. “So tomorrow, or the next day. Who do we play? Washington? So, I’ll probably be guarding [Kyle Kuzma] or Jordan Poole. Just being a versatile defender and being able to showcase that.”<i> </i></p><p>“A lot of little guys can get into a big guy like that and make it tough. They double-teamed him every time. So, if somebody is going to be guarded that way, everybody else has to participate and you have to do it a different way,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said of Brooks’ defense.</p><p>“As usual in the NBA down the stretch, you got to make shots and Brooks made two threes in a row down there, which gave them a little bit of a separation. That’s what it’s all about at the end of games,” the Hall of Fame coach continued as he alluded to the forward’s offense. Brooks added 13 on that side of the ball.</p><h2>A team approach to guarding Wemby</h2><p>While Houston started multiple defensive possessions with Brooks on Wembanyama, they’d rotate different defenders toward the 20-year-old phenom as well as the Spurs’ second-leading scorer.</p><p>“Whoever we’re playing, if that’s how they play us, other guys are going to have to step up and hit shots. Obviously, Victor is going to get that type of attention a lot throughout his entire career, same with Devin [Vassell],” Spurs point guard Tre Jones said. “There were points tonight where Devin couldn’t even get open. They’re hanging all over him, denying him the ball whenever they could, just trying not to let him get going. We know that they’re going to try to take both of them away a lot, and it’ll be on the rest of us to hit those open shots when they’re there.”</p><p>Wembanayama not only knows about Houston’s tough approach defensively. He continues to feel it.</p><p>“The physicality, the energy, just every night is a challenge. This is a very aggressive team, defensively. But Houston Rockets wing Dillon Brooks always makes it a point, nay, his life’s mission to make it difficult for the best players in the association. On Tuesday night, Brooks was his best self on the defensive end of the floor, as despite nearly giving up 10 inches to Wembanyama, he was able to help frustrate the presumptive 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year to a 10-point night on 4-10 shooting from the field.</p><p>Following the Rockets’ 114-101 win over the Spurs, head coach Ime Udoka credited Brooks for <a href="https://twitter.com/PaulGarciaNBA/status/1765231985180500103" rel="noopener">taking on the challenge</a> of frustrating Wembanyama by nudging him off his spots and fighting hard for positioning, especially at the high post area.</p><p>“Yeah, that was the main thing [for Dillon Brooks], doing his work early. No matter where [Victor Wembanyama was], top of the key [or] on the elbow, he had a body on him the whole time. [Brooks] denied a bunch of catches, pushed him off his spots, and then even on the posts he was fighting him [and] pushing him off the blocks in there. Then we had help and good rotations behind it so [I] loved our versatility on defense,” Udoka said, via Paul Garcia of Project Spurs.</p><p>Indeed, during the fourth quarter especially, the Rockets showed the true hallmark of an Ime Udoka-coached team — top-tier defense. The Spurs ran a bunch of actions for Victor Wembanyama along the perimeter, which gave Dillon Brooks the responsibility of battling against the nascent rookie, and then when Wembanyama was making his move, he ran into plenty of defenders in the paint.</p><p>Wembanyama turned the ball over six times, with Alperen Sengun, who had himself a night, racking up five steals as Brooks’ primary source of help along the backline. Nevertheless, the Rockets showcased their ability to blowout a team led by the all time great and Anthony Davis—arguably the best player in NBA history and an MVP level candidate big.</p><p>Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun were on their A-game, as both scored a combined 65 points. Green in particular has shown refinement in his gameplay over the <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/rockets/news/houston-rockets-jalen-green-building-brick-by-brick-into-all-around-player">last four games</a>, averaging 29.5 points on 49.5% shooting, eight rebounds, and 3.8 assists. The only notable-worthy NBA media highlight? An attempted poster over LeBron James that turned into a shooting foul.</p><p>The Rockets also demolished the Lakers in the rebound department, out-rebounding them 56-35, including 14-4 in offensive rebounds. Attacking the glass has been an ongoing issue with Houston, but this game displayed all of Houston’s strengths.</p><h2><b>Overlooking Rockets’ success</b></h2><p>Sadly, the media wouldn’t dare to mention how a new and improved Rockets team comfortably handled the Lakers in this matchup. What it’s mostly about is why the Lakers can’t win against lower seeded teams with a healthy LeBron and AD—who are on a lower seeded team themselves.</p><p>Now you might be wondering, does NBA media care about this at all? Of course not. These stats are likely displayed on local Houston media TV and Rockets fans alike. This was particularly due to the scoring outbursts of Jalen Green and Alpren Sengun, who both spearheaded Houston’s offense with double-doubles.</p><p>Green finished with 34 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists. Sengun, on the other hand, had 31 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists as well.</p><p>Signs of life seemed visible when the Lakers managed to bring the lead down to 10 in the fourth quarter. However, the Rockets put the lead back up to 16, prompting Darvin Ham to waive the white flag by subbing out his starters.</p><p>LeBron James, Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell all had 23 points <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-jarred-vanderbilt-falls-into-dillon-brooks-mind-game-trap-gets-ejected" rel="noopener">for the Lakers</a>. Outside the trio, only Rui Hachimura was able to tally double-digits in scoring (16 points).</p><p>The Lakers are currently ninth in the Western Conference.
