The 29-year-old big man has not requested a trade and is reportedly receptive to the direction Perry hopes to take the organization.</p><p>“In terms of building blocks, team and league sources say the Kings continue to signal a commitment to veteran big man Domantas Sabonis,” Amick wrote following the first night of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday.</p><p>“While Sabonis’ frustration with the organization’s handling of the Fox saga has been well-chronicled, league sources say Sabonis has not asked for a trade and has had positive early discussions with Perry regarding the Kings’ aspirations for this summer. Following <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-under-fire-wrecked-anthony-davis-again">Sacramento’s 120–106 Play-In Tournament loss to the Dallas Mavericks</a>, Sabonis told reporters he wanted “to know what’s going to happen” with the team. This makes the second consecutive summer the front office has taken an against-the-grain swing at solidifying the future. Standing at 7-foot-4 with a dominant college resume, 2024 NBA Draft pick <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/how-grizzlies-survive-without-zach-edey-injury-surgery-until-next-march-madness">Zach Edey has the potential to be a franchise cornerstone next to Ja Morant</a>. Sacramento Kings star Domantas Sabonis would be a great mentor, but the cost this summer is probably too steep.</p><p>Being stuck in a holding pattern until August 15 is the first obvious hurdle. Unfortunately, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope ($21.6m) and Cole Anthony ($13.1m) cannot be aggregated in a trade until then. A deal for Sabonis ($43.6m) would have to include Jaren Jackson Jr. beforehand. That is very unlikely; the NBA’s market mayhem will provide too much urgency to complete other negotiations. Still, the idea is worth a Summer League executive chat.</p><h2><b>Zach Edey, Grizzlies going big</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Why-Grizzlies-should-consider-Domantas-Sabonis-as-Zach-Edeys-mentor.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The NBA has shifted toward smaller, faster wing-based lineups, but Domantas Sabonis has proven <a href="https://www.nba.com/player/1627734/domantas-sabonis" rel="noopener">traditional bigs can still dominate</a> with the right approach. Zach Edey’s size, strength, and interior presence offer the Grizzlies a unique weapon for the rest of the decade under the right circumstances. However, Kleiman had to know the Canadian’s transition to the NBA would require careful development to maximize his potential.</p><p>While neither Sabonis nor Edey are elite athletes by NBA standards, the 29-year-old has thrived by leveraging his basketball IQ, footwork, and positioning. Edey could benefit immensely from studying how Sabonos navigates defensive coverages, uses pump fakes, and creates angles to score efficiently without relying on explosiveness. For example, Sabonis excels at using his body to seal defenders, creating easy scoring opportunities.</p><p>Edey needs to learn how to leverage his size similarly while adding subtle soft touch skills around the rim. Additionally, Sabonis is respectable when defending in space. Though not elite by any means and never comfortable against upper-echelon ballhandlers, Sabonis is a decent example of how an intelligent big man can survive in pick-and-roll-heavy schemes.</p><p>Sabonis is arguably a better-suited mentor than non-shooters relegated to the dunker’s spot like Jarrett Allen or Nic Claxton as well. While Edey dominated college basketball with sheer size and touch around the rim, Sabonis has mastered the art of playmaking from the high post. Learning how to facilitate from the elbow or short roll would make Edey a more versatile offensive threat with Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.</p><p>Then there is the professionalism both on and off the court. Sabonis is a leader for the Kings, fostering team chemistry and handling media scrutiny with poise. He has gracefully dealt with De’Aaron Fox, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine since being traded to Sacramento. For Edey, who will face intense scrutiny after being clocked at 100+ miles per hour in a Kia Sorrento, learning how to carry himself as a professional confidently will ease the transition amid increased expectations.</p><h2><b>No ransom for Kings</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Kings-Big-3.jpg"><figcaption>Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Domantas Sabonis has an albatross of a contract suppressing his value in the current market. It’s a tough sell in a buyer’s market, especially while Kevin Durant is still available.</p><p>The Grizzlies would be paying for the 11th-most-expensive big, but Tuomas Iisalo may not have that sort of showcase role available. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/memphis-grizzlies/grizzlies-ja-morant-makes-guarantee-after-calling-cap-on-stephen-a-smith">Sources stress that Ja Morant will be the centerpiece</a>. Jaren Jackson Jr. is an All-NBA talent with plenty of political capital built up within the organization and fanbase. The Kings will have to understand the lowball offers if they get stuck trying to shop Sabonis in September. When the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-mike-brown-excited-2023-24-season">Kings snapped their 16-season playoff drought</a> during the 2022-23 season, it appeared as they were the young, rising team everyone in the Western Conference would need to look out for due to All-Stars De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis.</p><p>Two seasons later, the Kings have now missed the playoffs in back-to-back years, and much has changed.</p><p>Mike Brown, who set a standard and culture in Sacramento and was named the 2022-23 NBA Coach of the Year, was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/sources-inside-kings-decision-fire-mike-brown-deaaron-fox-uncertain-future">fired after 31 games during this 2024-25 season</a>. Fox, who had been the cornerstone of the franchise, was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-deaaron-fox-trade-spurs-zach-lavine-kings">moved before the trade deadline in a blockbuster three-team trade</a> with the San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls.</p><p>Now, entering an offseason full of uncertainty, Sabonis is hearing his name in trade rumors as a result of the uncertainty that clouds the Kings once more.</p><p>Owner Vivek Ranadive has made it clear that he doesn’t envision his organization taking yet another massive step back, especially given the talent that exists on this Sacramento roster. Despite the Kings underperforming expectations by a mile, the reality of the situation is that they still have a talented group with Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Keegan Murray, Malik Monk, and Jonas Valanciunas under contract entering the 2025-26 season.</p><p>That is why Sacramento will be aggressive in its hunt for further upgrades this offseason.</p><p>This is also why Sabonis trade rumors have been blown out of proportion and are nothing more than some creating noise for the sake of doing so, since it’s the offseason.</p><h2><b>The Kings are not actively shopping Domantas Sabonis</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Kings-Domantas-Sabonis-1.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Kings have not been contacting teams gauging trade interest in Domantas Sabonis, league sources confirmed to ClutchPoints. Although Sabonis has heard his name come up in recent rumors, Sacramento has not shown any interest in parting ways with the 29-year-old star big man to this point.</p><p>With this said, new GM Scott Perry and his front office are plotting different avenues for the direction in which they want to take the franchise. Barring a drastic change in their mentality and shifting to a rebuilding phase, which continues to look unlikely, Sabonis will enter the 2025-26 season as one of the leading voices of this organization.</p><p>However, it is worth mentioning Sabonis’ long-term outlook still faces a level of uncertainty because the All-Star big man has been seeking clarity.</p><p>Many around the league began questioning <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/nba-rumors-kings-facing-doomsday-domantas-sabonis-trade-scenario">what the Kings have planned with Sabonis</a> after Fox was traded before the deadline in February. More importantly, Sabonis himself is beginning to ask questions about what the future looks like in Sacramento.</p><p>New leadership from Perry and the front office should be able to provide Sabonis with the answers he needs, and so far, there have not been any indications that the two sides want to split, like what transpired with Fox and his representation.</p><p>Of course, that has not stopped the rumor mill from engulfing Sabonis, as he was recently linked to the Toronto Raptors. Masai Ujiri is always looking for ways to increase the Raptors’ overall potential, and you can never count out Toronto trading for a star player. After being rumored to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/toronto-raptors/raptors-rumors-brian-windhorst-hints-at-possible-big-fish-trade">in the hunt for a “big fish</a>” this offseason by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, rumors surrounding Sabonis spiraled out of control.</p><p>No contact between Toronto and Sacramento regarding Sabonis has taken place, and Doug Smith of the Toronto Star <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyUksmz1xbo&amp;t=296s" rel="noopener">confirmed such</a> on Sactown Sports 1140.</p><p>“I’ve never heard his name in a conversation with anybody involved with the Raptors for a year and a half,” Smith stated. “They’re pretty happy with Jakob Poeltl with two years left in his deal at $20 million a year. Sabonis is a great player, no question about it. But I’ve never heard his name linked to Toronto. Anybody who I’ve talked to in the Raptors’ front office, or the decision level, has never talked [about him] as a guy that they would like to pursue.”</p><p>The Raptors have been rumored to be in the hunt for Giannis Antetokounmpo if he becomes available in trade conversations, but the idea of Toronto potentially pursuing a trade for Sabonis is nothing more than fan fiction.</p><p>It doesn’t appear as if everything will spiral out of control with Sabonis as it did between the Kings and Fox. Sacramento has been home for Sabonis over the last four years, and he has made it clear that he and his family envision remaining there for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Obviously, things change in the NBA, and nothing is ever certain. Just ask Luka Doncic about that. But the reality of this situation for the Kings is that they have a star big man they constantly play through on offense, who is happy in his role of being one of the leaders of the team.</p><p>All Sabonis wants is clarity about the franchise’s desire to win, which is one of the reasons why Perry will seek win-now moves during the summer. There is also some time for the two sides to chart a winning path together.</p><p>Sabonis signed a four-year, $186 million contract with Sacramento in 2023 and will be entering the second year of his deal during the 2025-26 season, which is valued at $43.6 million. This season, he averaged 19.1 points, 13.9 rebounds (league-high), and 6.0 assists per game while shooting 59.0 percent from the floor.</p><h2><b>Will Kings move DeMar DeRozan?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Kings-DeMar-DeRozan-2.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The big question surrounding the Kings this offseason revolves around what will happen with 35-year-old DeMar DeRozan, who will be turning 36 in August before the start of the 2025-26 season.</p><p>DeRozan signed a three-year, $73.8 million contract with the Kings via a sign-and-trade agreement with the Chicago Bulls in 2024, yet the veteran admitted that this past year was one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-demar-derozan-admission-play-in-loss-mavericks">most challenging of his career</a> due to everything that happened in Sacramento.</p><p>“It’s probably the most I’ve been through in my 16-year career,” DeRozan said in the aftermath of being eliminated in the West play-in tournament. “The season we had was a lot. It’s too hard to fathom right now.”</p><p>The Kings are expected to gauge the market for DeRozan this summer, sources said. Since DeRozan will make $24.7 million during the 2025-26 season, his scoring production on an affordable contract will draw a level of intrigue from teams seeking a proven star and not wanting to tie themselves down long-term.</p><p>For years, the Miami Heat have been labeled as a prime destination for DeRozan, and he will <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/celtics-offseason-trade-intel-after-jayson-tatum-injury-siegels-scoop">once again be viewed as a plausible target</a> for Pat Riley’s team. It is also possible that the Boston Celtics could express interest in a player like DeRozan to try and replicate Jayson Tatum’s lost production after the All-NBA First Team forward suffered a torn Achilles in the playoffs.</p><p>Unlike Sabonis, whom the organization doesn’t have an interest in moving at this time, a trade involving DeRozan this offseason is believable. Then again, Perry won’t trade the Sacramento veteran just for the sake of doing so.</p><p>This offseason for the Kings is all about finding ways to improve their immediate outlook and get back to the playoffs. One move that could get them over the hump and ensure that they make the NBA Finals sooner rather than later would be a trade for Domantas Sabonis.</p><p>ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel has reported that the Sacramento Kings could eventually blow things up, and a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/how-nba-new-208-million-second-apron-impacts-trades-free-agency-siegels-scoop?utm_content=buffer03514&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_campaign=buffer"> Sabonis trade request</a> is even a possibility. Sabonis led the league with 61 double-doubles. He is a force on the offensive end and the closest thing in the league to Nikola Jokic, who is the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-top-100-player-rankings-2024-25-season">best player in the NBA.</a></p><p>However, the Kings have been unable to get out of mediocrity, and they just lost in the Play-in Tournament. Sabonis hasn’t signaled that he wants out yet, but that decision could come soon. Even if <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-wants-stay-but-theres-catch">Sabonis doesn’t demand a trade</a>, the Kings might be smart to trade him for a huge haul. The team showed flashes of brilliance with Victor Wembanyama leading the way. The former first-overall pick was one of the most hyped-up prospects ever, and he was living up to the expectations in his second year in the league before his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/victor-wembanyama-chris-bosh-history-blood-clots-nba-players">season was shut down due to blood clotting</a>.</p><p>Wembanyama was well on his way to winning the Defensive Player of the Year award, and he still led the league in blocks (176) despite missing every game after the All-Star break. The Spurs also run their offense through the 7-foot-4 big man, as he can do it all with the ball in his hands.</p><p>The Spurs were expected to make a potential postseason splash in 2025 because they also <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">traded for De’Aaron Fox</a>. The ex-Kings guard is one of the best point guards in the league, and his speed and clutchness would have worked well alongside Wembanyama had they finished out the season together. The frontcourt player we’ve seen Fox work well with before Wemabnyama was Sabonis. While they might <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/spurs/news/de-aaron-fox-breaks-silence-on-unfollowing-kings-teammate-01jky19rwvy1#:~:text=After%20it%20was%20initially%20reported,see%20it%2C%22%20he%20responded." rel="noopener">not be the best of friends</a>, they’ve certainly proven that they can work well together on the court.</p><p>Sabonis can work the high post and get his teammates involved, thanks to his excellent passing ability. His biggest weakness is defense, but that is less of a concern when Wembanyama is waiting in the painted area. Fox, Sabonis, and Wembanyma would form one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/best-nba-big-threes-2024-25-season-ranked">best big threes in the NBA.</a> Additionally, likely Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle has star potential, and the team would even hold onto Devin Vassell in this deal.</p><p>The Spurs have two first-round picks in the 2025 NBA Draft, but they are ready to win now. Moving those picks, as well as a 2030 first-rounder, would be a smart move if they can return a perennial All-Star talent like Sabonis. His already-established chemistry with Fox is just the cherry on top, assuming there isn’t more to the story about their relationship. The Spurs and Kings are comfortable doing business together, so what is stopping them from making a Sabonis trade happen?</p><h2><b>Should the Kings trade Domantas Sabonis and embrace a rebuild?</b></h2><p>The Kings have what looks like a decent big three on paper, with Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and Zach LaVine all on the roster. It didn’t work out this season, though, as the team was eliminated from playoff contention when they lost in the Play-in Tournament. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-scott-perry-former-knicks-gm-after-firing-monte-mcnair">Kings have already fired their general manager</a>, so big roster changes could be coming.</p><p>As it stands, this core doesn’t have a championship ceiling. Sabonis struggles too much on defense without some rim protection help, which the Kings have almost none of. The Kings ranked 25th in blocks per game. Additionally, although LaVine’s sample size in Sacramento was small (32 games), everybody already knows that his pairing with DeRozan is underwhelming.</p><p>The two only made the playoffs together on the Bulls once, and they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks in five games in 2022. The team needs to hit the reset button. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-offseason-trade-proposal-lands-zach-lavine-after-kings-eliminated-from-playoffs">Trades involving LaVine</a> or DeRozan make sense, too, but Sabonis provides the most trade value. In this trade, the Kings receive a veteran mentor in Harrison Barnes and a still-young Keldon Johnson.</p><p>Johnson is still 25 years old, and he has even been a key piece for Team USA before, despite the squad always being filled with NBA All-Stars. Johnson’s numbers were down this past season, but he averaged 22 points per game as recently as 2023. On top of that, the Kings would add three draft picks, two of which might end up in the NBA Draft lottery this year.
