To help get back in the Western Conference arms race, the Kings pulled off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-land-demar-derozan-in-sign-and-trade-deal">sign and trade deal with the Chicago Bulls for DeMar DeRozan</a>. With DeRozan in the fold, the Kings can play a bit of a two-man game with him and Domantas Sabonis.</p><p>During a recent media availability session, DeRozan spoke about the difficulties opposing teams will have trying to stop the pairing with Sabonis, as per Sean Cunningham of FOX 40.</p><p>“You can’t guard it,” DeRozan said. “That’s what I like about it, having an IQ big like that, being able to screen, pass the ball, make quick decisions. You got to make a decision. When I’m coming off, or if he’s gonna keep it, he’s gonna score it, there’s just so many options out of that. And to be able to play out of that, it makes it tough for defensive players to kind of make a decision on either one of us.”</p><p>Having DeMar DeRozan in the lineup gives the Kings an additional ball-handler and playmaker that they did not have last season. However, it is rare to see a player be given permission to wear a retired number. That is exactly what has happened with Sacramento Kings star big man Domantas Sabonis, as he will honor Hall of Famer Bob Davies by switching from No. 10 to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sacramento-kings-retired-numbers">retired No. 11 jersey</a>.</p><p>Sabonis was <a href="https://www.nba.com/kings/news/domantas-sabonis-to-wear-no-11-for-the-sacramento-kings" rel="noopener">granted permission</a> for this change by Davies’ children, the Kings announced on Friday.</p><p>“My siblings and I are so proud of our father and everything he accomplished throughout his legendary NBA career,” Davies’ daughter Camy Davies Keck stated in the team’s press release. “He was a great influence on our family as well as many young aspiring athletes. He was definitely a man of true character. Given the Sabonis family’s special connection to number 11, we thought it was fitting to share our dad’s number with Domantas and wish him much success.</p><p>“We are thankful to the Kings organization and fans for their continued support.”</p><p>The main reason Sabonis wanted to make this change, aside from honoring Davies, is because the No. 11 jersey has always been important to him and his family. Sabonis has not only worn the No. 11 jersey throughout his career to honor his father, who spent seven years in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers, but he also <a href="https://x.com/SeanCunningham/status/1801649996632363401" rel="noopener">named his daughter Eleven</a> after he was born on July 11, 2023, according to Sean Cunningham of FOX40 in Sacramento.</p><p>“The number 11 holds a special place in mine and my family’s lives, having worn it throughout my career in honor of my father,” Sabonis said. “I’m incredibly thankful to the Davies family for sharing number 11 with me and I look forward to building on the legacy of all those who wore it before me.”</p><h2><b>Sabonis to honor Davies’ legacy</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Domantas-Sabonis-talking-to-fans.jpg"><figcaption>Cary Edmondson-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The Kings, who used to be the Rochester Royals when Davies played for them in the 1950s, retired the No. 11 jersey after the Hall of Fame point guard retired after the 1954-55 season. Davies played a total of ten seasons in the NBA, all of which were with the Royals. He was a four-time All-Star and led the organization to its lone championship in 1951. Davies was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969.</p><p>Sabonis is now set to honor Davies legacy by wearing the Kings’ retired No. 11 jersey.</p><p>The 2023-24 season proved to be a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-wilt-chamberlain-territory-latest-accomplishment">historic one for Sabonis</a>, which is why he is looking to add to the legacy of this jersey. He averaged 19.4 points and a league-high 13.7 rebounds per game while shooting 59.4 percent from the floor this past year. As a result, Sabonis was named to the All-NBA Third Team for the second consecutive season.</p><p>Not only did Sabonis become just the second player in NBA history to average at least 19.0 points, 13.0 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game since Wilt Chamberlain did so during the 1967-68 season, but the Kings star also led the NBA in total rebounds (1,120), double-doubles (77), and triple-doubles (26). His 26 triple-doubles were tied for the seventh-most in a single season in NBA history.</p><p>Sabonis was virtually unstoppable as a double-double threat this past season. He recorded 61 straight games with a double-double, posting the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-breaks-55-year-old-record-with-stunning-performance-vs-bucks">longest streak in franchise history</a> and the longest the league has seen in such a category since the NBA/ABA merger in 1976-77.</p><p>After missing the playoffs via the play-in tournament, Sabonis and the Kings will be entering the 2024-25 season with redemption on their minds. Next to De’Aaron Fox, Sabonis will aim to have yet another legendary season. On the other hand, some believed Sabonis’ regular season efforts were good enough to at least have his name mentioned.</p><p>The star forward may not have been the MVP in the eyes of the voters, but in Kings fans’ hearts, he finished in first place.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sacramento-kings-bold-predictions-2024-nba-play-in-tournament-vs-warriors">Domantas Sabonis displayed stellar</a> regular season production in 2023-24. The 28-year-old averaged 19.4 points, a league-leading 13.7 rebounds, and a career-high 8.2 rebounds per game. Sabonis was among the few players who played all 82 regular season games. Moreover, he amassed the most triple-doubles in the NBA with 26. Sabonis’ production has him in the conversation for his second All-NBA honor.</p><p>In addition, Sabonis became just the seventh player in NBA history to amass 77 double-doubles during the regular season. Sabonis delivered like few in the NBA in 2023-24. As a result, the Kings made the postseason for the first since 2006. Unfortunately, Sacramento lost their first-round series to the Golden State Warriors in seven games.</p><p>On the bright side, De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis earned their first All-NBA honors after the season. They were the first Kings duo in franchise history to achieve the feat in the same season.</p><p>One year later, the star pairing helped the Kings have a shot to make the playoffs again. Although they came up short, Sacramento retains some of the most promising talent in the NBA. Like Sabonis, Fox had a career year in 2023-24.</p><p>Fox amassed a career-high 26.6 points along with 5.6 assists, and 4.6 rebounds through 74 regular season games. In addition, he totaled 2.0 steals per contest, which led the NBA.  The star point guard is not the only one leading the new era of Kings talent.</p><p>Keegan Murray is Sacramento’s prized sharpshooter. Murray had one of the most impressive regular season performances in the league in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-stephen-curry-cant-believe-keegan-murray-12-triple-feat-in-kings-vs-jazz">Kings’ 125-104</a> Dec. 16th win over the Utah Jazz. He amassed two franchise records in one night: most points in a third quarter (26) and most three-pointers made in a game (12).</p><p>The trio of Murray, De’Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis looks to ascend higher in preparation for the 2024-25 season. The Kings won 46 games this season—just two fewer than they did a year ago. Fox and Sabonis were just as electrifying. The roster was largely the same, albeit dented by late-season injuries to Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter. Nothing really changed … except expectations. And, well, the entire landscape of the Western Conference.”</p><p>Of course, the difference between the two outcomes could be chalked up to the rest of the NBA Western Conference getting better around the Kings. The Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder, for example, made massive jumps this season.</p><p>But the excitement around the Kings has worn off, and roster issues could prevent things from getting better any time soon, per Beck:</p><p>“Not everyone is convinced, however. ‘I just don’t like the way they’re built,’ said a rival scout of the Kings. ‘They’re running everything through [Sabonis] as if he was Jokic, but he’s not Jokic. He’s a hell of a player, but he can’t shoot, so he can’t really stretch the floor. It makes it a really static type of basketball.’ The scout also suggested that the Kings need a more traditional point guard next to Fox rather than a shooter, to allow him to thrive more off the ball.”</p><p>While Malik Monk is going to be a free agent, the team could elect to bring him back. The Kings also project to be under the salary cap for the next two seasons, so it’s not unreasonable to expect Sacramento to bring in reinforcements around the fringes.</p><h2><b>Kings hope to exceed Play-In Tournament next year</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Play-In-Tournament.jpg"><figcaption>© Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Fans need to keep in mind just how far the Kings have come since GM Monte McNair and his staff arrived in late 2020. In his first draft, McNair selected NBA star Tyrese Haliburton at no. 12, a pick that was instantly called by many the steal of the draft. Just over a year later, McNair traded the still-developing Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers for Sabonis, an established two-time All-Star. Less than six months after that, McNair drafted Keegan Murray, who would set the NBA rookie record for 3-pointers made and make the All-Rookie first team while helping propel the Kings’ resurgence.</p><p>Even though they lost in the play-in, the core of a high-level playoff team is now in place with plenty of room to develop into something truly special, which is more than the Kings could say for the last 15 years.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

That performance <a href="https://x.com/statmuse/status/1777886295466836207">snapped</a> his 61-game double-double streak, per StatMuse.</p><p>Sabonis owns the seventh-longest streak of double-doubles in NBA history. The Kings big man had just moved past Elvin Hayes’ stretch of 60 straight from Oct. 30, 1968, to Feb. 22, 1969, on Sunday in a win over the Brooklyn Nets. His streak was the longest since the NBA and ABA merged for the 1976-77 season. He broke Kevin Love’s mark of 53 straight since the merger last month.</p><p>Wilt Chamberlain owns the all-time record with 227 straight double-doubles.</p><p>The game was important to the Kings. They entered the night eighth in the Western Conference standings with a shot at avoiding the Play-In Tournament.</p><p>Despite blowing a 20-point lead to the Thunder, the Kings still have a shot at the 6th seed in the Western Conference playoffs. With three games left to play, Sacramento trails the seventh-seed Phoenix Suns by a single game in the standings. They currently sit two games behind the New Orleans Pelicans for the sixth seed, which would keep them out of the Play-In Tournament altogether.</p><p>On the flipside, the Kings lead the Los Angeles Lakers by a half-game and the Golden State Warriors by a single game for the ninth and tenth seeds, respectively.</p><p>The Kings have a great chance to gain some ground in the standings when they host the sixth-seed Pelicans on Thursday night.</p><h2><b>Domantas Sabonis has been a machine for the Kings</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Domantas-Sabonis-dunk.jpg"><figcaption>© Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p> </p><p>Although he wasn’t named an NBA All-Star this season, Sabonis has arguably been the best big man in the league this year due to the impact he brings on a night-to-night basis as a rebounder. After leading the league in rebounds last season, the 27-year-old Kings star is once again leading the league in rebounding, only this time averaging a career-high 13.6 boards per game.</p><p>By recording his 70th double-double earlier this month, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-domantas-sabonis-wilt-chamberlain-territory-latest-accomplishment">Sabonis joined</a> Truck Robinson, Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Moses Malone (five times) as the only players in league history to have at least 70 double-doubles in a season since the NBA/ABA merger.</p><p>What is even more impressive is that Sabonis recently joined Chamberlain as the only players in league history to have at least 1,000 rebounds and 600 assists in a single season. Chamberlain achieved this during the 1966-67 and 67-68 seasons. In that first season, the legend had 1,957 total rebounds and 630 assists. On the final day of March, Sabonis registered 17 points and 11 rebounds in the Kings’ 127-106 victory over the Utah Jazz. Not many players are able to consistently dominate on the interior like him while also making an impact as a scoring and passing weapon. The fact that Sabonis has joined only Wilt in a rebounding and passing category speaks volumes about the kind of impact he makes on the Kings daily.</p><p>Recently, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-love-domantas-sabonis-double-double-reaction">Sabonis surpassed Kevin Love</a> for the most consecutive double-doubles in league history. Sabonis has since extended his double-double streak to 57 straight games. Late in the game, though, the Kings got the benefit of a <a href="https://streamable.com/p2bv4i" rel="noopener">controversial call</a> that helped them hold on for the victory, and it’s safe to say that the Magic weren’t too pleased with how the game played out in the final minute.</p><p>With 25.6 seconds left in the fourth quarter, De’Aaron Fox was inbounded the ball right by half court, where he was lightly tapped by Jalen Suggs. Fox lost his balance and fell backwards, and it appeared to be a backcourt violation that would have given Orlando the ball back with a one-point lead.</p><p>Instead, Suggs was called for a very late foul on Fox once he crossed over the half court line. The timing of the call given how late it came in, plus the fact that Fox was sent to the free throw line to give Sacramento the lead, made Orlando furious.</p><p>The Magic had a pair of chances to take the lead or tie, but they were unable to do so, ensuring that Sabonis’ latest big game wouldn’t go to waste. It’s gotten to the point where it feels like he’s bound to get a double-double every time he takes the floor, which certainly isn’t something that can’t be taken lightly. However, Sabonis just makes things look easy when he’s playing for the Kings.</p><p>Now that he has tied Love’s record, Sabonis will have a shot to break it on Monday night when the Kings return home to take on the Philadelphia 76ers. Talks surrounding the big man’s continuous streak of double-doubles have surfaced recently, and they’ll likely continue following Thursday’s outing. Why? Well, as of the final buzzer, Sabonis now surpasses Moses Malone to hold the <a href="https://twitter.com/FCartoscelli3/status/1770974676770263340" rel="noopener">second-longest double-double streak</a> since the NBA-ABA merger, per Sactown Sports 1140’s Frankie Cartoscelli. He had 14 points and 14 rebounds on Thursday.</p><p>Sabonis is now one game shy of Kevin Love’s 53 consecutive in the 2010-11 season and he now holds the 14th-longest streak in NBA history (including pre ABA-NBA merger).</p><p>This season, the three-time All-Star continues his stellar play for the Kings. After a quiet rookie year in Oklahoma, Domantas Sabonis was traded to the Indiana Pacers, where he would eventually find his footing. He played an important bench role at first, becoming one of the league’s top sixth-men during the 2018-19 season.</p><p>It was during Indiana’s 2019-20 and 2020-21 campaigns that Sabonis would fully develop into an All-Star. In that two-season span, Sabonis made both AS games, averaging 19.4 points and 12.2 rebounds per game (both years combined). The Lithuanian-American center was traded in 2022 to the Kings following the Pacers’ decision to head into a rebuild. Playing in a new team would not affect his game, as Sabonis continued his double-double average to garner his third All-Star appearance in the 2022-23 season.</p><p>In this day and age, where plenty glorify fancy handles, step-back threes and jelly layups, Sabonis plays a fundamentally sound game. From low-post footwork, an ability to pass the ball and a tendency to get physical down in the paint, the big man has an old-school flair on the court. Defensively, the Kings’ 116.5 opponent points allowed per game ranks in the bottom half of the league (18th).
