My MVP! We’re going to have a great year and he gonna keep doing what he doing. Steph Curry about to take home his third MVP this season.”</p><p>On Monday, the Warriors defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 131-118 to start the season 3-1. Like he could sweep three of the top.”</p><p>Green thinks he could sweep the awards because he does not know Wembanyama’s weakness. He also feels that most people in the NBA can’t guard him.</p><p>“He’s going to be able to compete for all those awards,” Green said. “Looking at him, you can only sit and wonder what type of player it will take to guard him.”</p><p>Through four games, Wembanyama is averaging 33.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.7 steals, and six blocks per game, averaging 56.9% from the field. They handled the Grizzlies rather easily, taking a 131-118 victory after getting off to a marvelous start in the third quarter, and Green, for his troubles, ended up with seven points, four rebounds, and 10 assists on the night as Golden State notched its third win of the season in four games.</p><p>There is certainly plenty of history between the Warriors and Grizzlies. These two teams faced each other in the 2022 NBA playoffs, and head coach Steve Kerr was memorably livid after Dillon Brooks took out Gary Payton II and injured him on a reckless defensive play.</p><p>Since then, the Grizzlies have struggled; they lost in the first round of the playoffs in 2023 and 2025, and they endured a nightmare campaign in 2024. It was a well-rounded performance for the Warriors, who are hoping to rekindle their mid-2010s dynastic magic one last time with a team full of aging veterans.</p><p>Speaking of the 2010s, in 2015-16, the Warriors set the record for most wins in a single season in NBA history, finishing the year 73-9 and drawing many “greatest team of all team” talks before ultimately losing in the NBA Finals. Then, the following year, they added Kevin Durant and went 16-1 in the playoffs en route to the championship.</p><p>Recently, Draymond Green, who was a star of both that team and the current iteration of the squad, gave <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gGCdHGOED-0&amp;t=3005s" rel="noopener">his confident opinion</a> on whether that 2016-17 roster was the best of all time.</p><p>“The best the NBA has ever seen. One thing that helped them stay afloat was free throws, as Butler went 16-for-16 at the line, while Curry went 8-for-8. There might be extra motivation for Butler to not miss many free throws this season, as he <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46681601/jimmy-butler-jonathan-kuminga-carry-warriors-opening-win" rel="noopener">revealed a bet</a> he made with Draymond Green.</p><p>“I don’t think it’s a bad bet. But it’s kind of a bad bet,” Butler said via ESPN’s Anthony Slater. “I’ve got a bet with Dray that I got to shoot a better (FT) percentage than No. 30 (Steph) on our team.”</p><p>Funny enough, it seems like everybody knew about the bet except Curry. He got the Warriors in a rhythm to start the game, scoring 12 points in the first nine minutes.</p><p>“He was the reason we became a good team last year,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “He provides that stability, that ability to get fouled, go to the line and settle the game down.</p><p>“He just controls the game out there for us. We need that. We’ve always been at our best when we can provide the support for Draymond and Steph’s chaos with stability. The chaos is really powerful, but it can get away from us. Jimmy settles us down.”</p><p>When the Lakers looked like they were going to make a run, Butler was indeed the stabilizer at times, getting to the line and knocking down his free throws. The four-time champion and polarizing forward <a href="https://x.com/NickFriedell/status/1980824487139635417" rel="noopener">incurred a technical foul</a> about halfway through the first quarter, wasting no time in displaying his trademark intensity. And he was not even on the court.</p><p>“Draymond picks up his first tech of the year — from the bench,” Nick Friedell posted on X. “He was mad the Warriors didn’t get a call and was one of several players yelling from the bench. Draymond seems extra amped for the opener tonight.”</p><p>Even if Green was not the only one to offer his opinion, the officials probably had no trouble recognizing his voice. The former All-NBA Second-Team selection has built a reputation for himself during his 13-year career, and while it consists of many impressive accolades, it also includes a short fuse. Green resents that perception, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-steve-kerr-gets-real-draymond-green-amid-flagrant-technical-fouls">the technicals continue to pile up</a>.</p><p>Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has stressed the importance of the franchise great maintaining his composure, for the team cannot afford to lose him to an ejection or suspension. Green is the defensive engine on this squad, playing well above his 6-foot-6 frame and allowing the Warriors to roll out a small-ball lineup for extended stretches of the game. He is also a valuable facilitator on offense, averaging 5.6 assists in 881 regular season contests.</p><p>Besides making a clear statistical impact, the 35-year-old is an emotional leader who can increase Golden State’s energy with his non-stop motor. He can elevate the Dubs in a variety of ways, but they all require him to be on the floor. Baker Mayfield has another opportunity to make another big push in his ongoing MVP campaign, which continued last week with his strong performance in a win against the San Francisco 49ers.</p><p>Recently, Golden State Warriors power forward Draymond Green took to the Schultz Report <a href="https://x.com/Schultz_Report/status/1980316380282138774" rel="noopener">to break down</a> which NBA comparison he has in mind for Mayfield, considering his career trajectory.</p><p>“Younger Isaiah Thomas,” said Green, per Jordan Schultz on X, formerly Twitter. “He was the 60th pick, but when you talk about having to go through the s***, you are with one team. He worked his way up on the Sacramento Kings, so although he was the 60th pick, he became their starting point guard, then had to go take a backup role in Phoenix, to ultimately get to Boston and become an MVP candidate. I think very similar journeys.”</p><p>While Mayfield was not the last pick in his draft like Thomas was (he was quite literally the opposite, going number one overall), he has indeed had to bounce around the league quite a bit in order to finally find a home in Tampa Bay, where he has turned himself into a leading MVP candidate this season.</p><h2><b>How far can the Buccaneers go?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Buccaneers-quarterback-Baker-Mayfield-6-carried-the-ball-against-the-Seattle-Seahawks.jpg"><figcaption>© Joe Nicholson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Heading into this season, the Buccaneers were projected by most to be a solid playoff team in the NFC, if not a fringe Super Bowl contender. It’s how he transformed himself from the 19th pick in the 2023 NBA draft into an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/what-we-learned-warriors-preseason-2025">important piece of the Golden State Warriors</a> in the twilight of their dynastic run– a player who’s worked himself into someone many see as the bridge to the Dubs’ future when Stephen Curry and Draymond Green call it a career.</p><p>It’s something Podziemski himself <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6698341/2025/10/08/brandin-podziemski-warriors-steph-curry-draymond-green-nba/" rel="noopener">is striving for</a>, as he told Nick Fridell of The Athletic.</p><p>“When they leave this thing, they got to leave it with somebody,” Podziemski said, “How can I have their trust? And they can go to [owner] Joe [Lacob] and [general manager] Mike [Dunleavy] and be like, ‘Hey, we want to leave it with him. He’s going to continue what we’re leaving.'”</p><p>“So, I think about that all the time, and I set myself up in that position to have that. And there’s a lot of other things than just skill that you need to be in that position.”</p><p>Whether Podziemski is capable of ascending to the level of Curry and Green, two enormous pillars of a team that won four titles, remains to be seen.</p><p>In two seasons with the Warriors, 22-year-old combo guard has averaged 10.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 138 regular-season games. He has a First Team All-Rookie selection to his name and also earned a spot on Team USA’s Select Team in 2024. It’s encouraging, but none of that screams future franchise star. It’s why a lot of the Warriors’ success hinges as he enters his third season.</p><p>For Green, the future Hall of Famer believes Podziemski can take the torch. But he also knows just how heavy the weight of that responsibility can be.</p><h2>Draymond’s message for Podziemski</h2><p>After practice on Sunday morning, a reporter asked Green about Podziemski’s desire to be the guy to carry on the Warriors’ winning ways. Green emphasized he likes Podziemski’s confidence and appreciates the respect he has for the veterans. But while Green expressed his belief in Podziemski, he also had <a href="https://x.com/kenzofuku/status/1980041007350837425" rel="noopener">a few words of wisdom</a> for the young guard.</p><p>“To hear BP say that, it’s exciting, but as a leader for him, you also understand what that comes with, you know. And so with him, I say, ‘Be careful,'” Green said.</p><p>“Don’t tell people too much, because the more you tell people, the more they use it against you and try to tear you down, you know. So I think you know, you can look at the trajectory of this thing and where it’s all going, and we all believe that he’s going to be one of the guys that takes the torch and runs with it, but be careful.”</p><p>Green explained how the young guys on the Warriors do not get “crushed” by the media whenever things go wrong. That’s a responsibility that falls onto the veterans, the leaders. Green described that aspect as a “heavy weight” that Podziemski doesn’t need to go through right now because it heightens expectations in a situation where he doesn’t quite have the necessary opportunity to reach them.</p><p>“I don’t want him to jump the gun on that and allow people to use it against him,” Green said. “Then people start trying to speed up your clock and [speed up] what you should be. And I would hate to see that happen to him. It’s not about him not believing in his potential. It’s about shielding him from the ridicule until he’s given the opportunity to rise to the occasion. On a team with Curry, Green, and Jimmy Butler, the Warriors are not looking to Podziemski to go 1-on-1 in isolation.</p><p>“The offense is built a certain way. You get certain opportunities, and this offense ain’t built for him to be that. Now, this offense is built for him to be aggressive, but it ain’t built for him to take it over. And if you’re in a spot where it’s not built for you to take over, and then people start trying to push that, you get screwed.”</p><p>Later, Green talked about how to harness and balance a young player like Podziemski’s confidence.</p><p>“It’s a slippery slope. You don’t rein it in too much– [it can] change the guy. So you just let them run rampant. And then when they f*** it up, you call them in, and you try to help them out, but let them run rampant.”</p><p>Green’s philosophy runs parallel to head coach Steve Kerr’s. Kerr has talked often about how the fire and passion Green plays with is what makes him special. Take away those things, and it’s not the same player.</p><p>“Trying to change confidence, you can’t give someone confidence,” Green continued. “If you take it away, are you just giving it back? No, you can’t just give it back. So I’d rather let his confidence go through the roof and out into the world. And then if you need to help pull it back in, that’s what you do. You build a relationship so that you have the respect to rank it back in some… I agree with people having confidence. You should have confidence.
