Ever since the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-detroit-agrees-to-48-million-duncan-robinson-sign-and-trade-with-heat">Heat and Pistons did a sign-and-trade that involved Robinson</a>, it was the end of an era for both sides, as the dynamic three-point shooter explains how much his former team has changed him.</p><p>Robinson’s story with Miami is one that a lot of players down his path dream about, even head coach Erik Spoelstra saying it’s amazing enough to be made into a film. Playing at a Division-III level, he would then be good enough to transfer to the University of Michigan, and though he went undrafted to the Heat, he carved out a crucial role for Miami throughout the last seven seasons.</p><p>He would be a key component to Miami’s success, even going as far as to showcase his elite three-point ability by holding the record of most three-pointers made in team history (1,202), and especially being the fastest to hit 1,000 made shots from deep. Robinson was honest in saying that <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nba/miami-heat/article313225945.html" rel="noopener">there will be a lot of emotions</a>, according to The Miami Herald.</p><p>“I think there will be a mix of emotions,” Robinson said. “It will be great to see a bunch of familiar faces, people that I have great lifelong relationships with. It will be strange to be on the other side in that building. Obviously, I’ve come to only know one experience from being in that building, and that’s playing for the Heat. Though usually the franchise would make tribute videos for players who won a championship with them or been an All-Star, Miami will have a tribute video for Robinson on Saturday night, as it was the location that contained Robinson’s “formative years.”</p><p>“I think when I look back, I think my time in Miami, I’ll always think of as some of my most formative years as both a player and a person,” Robinson said. “I think I grew so much on the court, off the court. I think in a lot of ways, I learned what it meant to be a professional, how to become a man, handle adversity, deal with adversity, setbacks, what it meant to sacrifice, be a part of winning, contribute to winning. As it’ll be another game where the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-how-tyler-herros-return-could-mix-up-miamis-new-offense">Heat will show off its new offense</a>, it will also be a homecoming game for Duncan Robinson.</p><p>The 31-year-old had spent the first seven seasons with Miami, evolving into one of the league’s most dangerous three-point shooters, holding the record for the most three-pointers made in franchise history. Playing well with Detroit, he comes back after the sign-and-trade this offseason to the Pistons, with head coach Erik Spoelstra admitting how<a href="https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2025/11/28/heats-spoelstra-on-duncan-robinson-to-arrive-in-pistons-colors-itll-be-strange/" rel="noopener"> “strange”</a> it is to watch Robinson not in a Miami uniform.</p><p>“It’ll be strange,” Spoelstra said, according to The Sun Sentinel. “I catch a lot of their games, and I’ve watched their highlights a lot. Even before playing for the Heat, his journey to the NBA was one of resilience, with Spoelstra praising Robinson for going from a Division III school, transferring to a big university, going undrafted, and then carving out a role in the NBA.</p><p>“That just doesn’t happen, where you come from Division III, then transfer, be a sixth man (at Michigan), and then to come into the league and get to 1,000 threes as quickly as he did and break our record for threes, and then he’s going to continue to go,” Spoelstra said.</p><p>“That’s just a credit to his fortitude and grit, just an amazing super power. So I do root for him, but it looks strange, him in that uniform, it really does,” Spoelstra continued.</p><p>There were memories made between Robinson and Miami, but starting a new chapter with the Pistons, he’s been averaging 12.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from deep. While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-terry-rozier-is-ready-for-2025-26-season-despite-federal-investigation">Heat get ready for the 2025-26 season,</a> Fontechhio wants to express to the fanbase that he is not here to replace Robinson, which is no doubt a nearly improbable feat.</p><p>In an exclusive interview with ClutchPoints, Fontecchio would explain why he doesn’t want to “replace” Robinson, as he sees himself as a different player. While the similarities really range from their three-point shooting ability, with Fontecchio saying he watched Robinson when starting his NBA career, he wants to set himself apart.</p><p>“Just because, first of all, we’re different human beings and different players, I respect his game a lot,” Fontecchio said after Friday’s training camp session at Florida Atlantic University. “And I actually, you know, starting my NBA career, I watched a little bit of Duncan too, like when he was in Miami, you know, the way he comes off screens, the way he comes off handoffs. I try to, you know, take a little bit of that into my game. But, I’ll say I’m a different player, because I know I like to do multiple stuff probably, a lot more than just shooting.”</p><p>“I’m not saying Duncan is just a shooter, you know, I mean, but you know, I take pride in putting a lot of effort on defense, and I hope I can be effective for this Miami Heat team on that part of the floor, too,” Fontecchio continued. “So, you know, that’s something I really want to do. Fontecchio’s production over the last few years has been up and down, as during the 2023-24 season, he shot 40.1 percent from beyond the arc.</p><p>It would regress last season to 33.5 percent, though the forward in the past has attributed that to a left big toe injury in 2024. He’s hoping to get back to the production of shooting efficiently from deep and playing hard defense, a match made in heaven for Miami, as he has gone through his first training camp with the team.</p><p>“It’s been good, it’s been a great four days so far, it’s been a lot of training, a lot of up and down, and a lot of effort,” Fontechhio said. “But it’s been great so far, everybody has welcomed me with open arms, and it’s been a great feeling. I’m starting to, you know, get the sense of what it means to be a Miami player, and I like it.”</p><h2><b>Heat’s Simone Fontecchio on his EuroBasket experience</b></h2><p>As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-erik-spoelstras-reaction-5-key-players-not-traveling-puerto-rico-game">Heat will play in Puerto Rico for the preseason opener</a> against the Orlando Magic, Fontecchio looks to play some minutes to get more comfortable in the system. That’s the first thing I talked to him about is being able to use his size, and he has shown particularly in Eurobasket and one of his years in Utah, when they tasked him with defending a lot of the other teams’ better wing players. Funny enough, Fontecchio is a well-known three-point shooter, which could be seen as ironic when looking at who is going to Detroit and <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1942655870854140112" rel="noopener">even said that he compares himself</a> to Robinson.</p><p>“I watched a lot of Duncan Robinson in the last three years because I think our skill set is pretty similar,” Fontecchio said. “Of course, he’s a tremendous shooter and he did an amazing job all the years in Miami and I was always kind of looking at him, the way he was getting off shots and I always kind of wanted to do the same thing. I think I can try to play like a little bit off handoffs, running off screens, do a little bit of that.”</p><p>The new Miami forward wouldn’t find out immediately about the trade since he was in Italy, his home country. Meaning, he was in sleep when the news broke about the next step in his NBA journey.</p><p>“I’m in Italy right now, so I was asleep when everything happened,” Fontecchio said. “It was a little bit late over here. … But I’m happy. During the 2023-24 season, he shot 40.1 percent from deep, but it dipped last season to 33.5 percent with the 29-year-old attributing that to an injury to his left big toe in 2024.</p><p>“Especially last season, it’s been a little up and down for me,” Fontecchio said. “I was coming off an injury that was a pretty important surgery on my left foot that I had last summer. So it was a little bit of chasing my best shape all summer and then also during the regular season. So I think I was never my full self.</p><p>“But I think I felt pretty comfortable over the last two to three years in the NBA,” Fontecchio continued. “I worked a lot to feel that way and I’m working even harder right now during this summer. It’s the first summer after a couple years that I didn’t have any problems or injury or stuff like that, and I can really focus on myself, on my health, and my skill set. It’s something I was looking for, to work on it. But definitely before, I felt like I belonged in this league and I can do some damage. Robinson has spent his entire career in Miami so far, so this will be a big change for him. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-detroit-agrees-to-48-million-duncan-robinson-sign-and-trade-with-heat">He is coming to Detroit</a> on a three-year deal that is worth $48 million, but only $18.8 million <a href="https://x.com/MikeAScotto/status/1942426701650170043" rel="noopener">is guaranteed</a>. The first year of the deal is fully guaranteed, but the next two seasons are a different story.</p><p>“Sources: The Detroit Pistons signed Duncan Robinson to a three-year, $48 million deal, which is fully guaranteed at $16.8 million for the 2025-26 season, partially guaranteed $2 million out of a possible $16 million in the 2026-27 season, and non-guaranteed for the 2027-28 season,” Michael Scotto said in a post.</p><p>The $18.8 million that is guaranteed in this contract is similar to what Robinson’s early termination clause was with the Heat.</p><p>“Duncan Robinson’s $18.8M guaranteed with the Detroit Pistons via sign-and-trade is nearly the same amount as his early termination clause with the Miami Heat,” Scotto added. “Robinson, a career 40% 3PT shooter, returns to Michigan after playing for the Wolverines for three seasons in college.”</p><p>Robinson has one of the best stories in the NBA, and he is starting to write a new chapter. He started his college basketball career at the Division III level, but he started to make a name for himself after transferring to Michigan. Robinson was a lights out shooter for the Wolverines, but he didn’t get drafted to the NBA. He was able to sign a two-way contract with the Heat, however, and the rest is history.</p><p>People have been doubting Robinson for his entire career, and he just keeps proving people wrong. No one expected him to do anything with the Heat, and then in the 2019-20 season, he averaged 13.5 points per game and shot almost 45% from three. Robinson was a key player on a team that made a run to the NBA Finals, and he earned a $90 million contract because of it.</p><p>Robinson hasn’t quite reached that same level since, but he is still a great spark off the bench because of his three-point shooting ability. While his numbers weren’t as impressive last year, he still averaged double figures and shot just under 40% from deep.</p><p>Now, Duncan Robinson gets to make a return to the mitten state. He is loved by Wolverines fans as he helped the team make a run to the national title game in 2018, and a lot of those fans support the Pistons. After a historically putrid 2023-24 campaign, the Pistons front office started anew, bringing in JB Bickerstaff to be the team’s new head coach and then adding a slew of veterans to aid the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-cade-cunningham-eligible-269-million-deal-all-nba-selection">team’s rising young core led by Cade Cunningham</a>. In the end, they won 44 games and pushed the New York Knicks to six hard-fought games in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs.</p><p>In the process, the Pistons seem to have established themselves as a playoff team for the years to come, stumbling upon a formula for success around their nascent superstar, who, at just 23 years of age, made the All-NBA Third Team this past season.</p><p>They need shooters and tough, rugged defenders around Cunningham, and with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-tim-hardaway-jr-free-agency-addition">departure of Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Denver Nuggets</a> and the likely blacklisting of Malik Beasley from the NBA amid his financial problems, the Pistons needed to bring in a new designated marksman.</p><p>They did just that, acquiring Duncan Robinson in a sign-and-trade sending Simone Fontecchio to the Miami Heat, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-detroit-agrees-to-48-million-duncan-robinson-sign-and-trade-with-heat">giving Robinson a three-year, $48 million contract</a>.</p><p>Did the Pistons overpay to sign Robinson to replace the shooters that they lost? Or did they simply pay the going rate for a player of Robinson’s caliber and skillset?</p><p>Here is the initial grade for the Pistons’ $48 million agreement with Robinson.</p><h2>The Pistons had to splash the cash for some shooting</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Duncan-Robinson-shoots-the-ball-e1737994353230.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Shooters who thrive off of movement make bank in today’s NBA, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-duncan-robinson-makes-20-million-contract-decision-amid-trade-rumors">Robinson simply capitalized on the Pistons’ need</a> for a shooter with his experience following the departure of Hardaway and the likely exit of Beasley.</p><p>This past season, Robinson averaged 11.0 points per game on 44/39/89 shooting splits, making 2.6 triples a night on high volume. He ranked 24th in the league this past campaign in total three-pointers made (197), and among bench players (players who started more than half of their games played on the bench), he ranked fifth.</p><p>Alas, Robinson would not have been the Pistons’ first choice signing. That would have been Beasley. But we all know what’s happening with the mercurial 28-year-old guard. He’s been facing gambling integrity allegations, all while facing a mountain of debt that had a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/nba-rumors-malik-beasleys-dentist-seized-part-pistons-paychecks-debt-issues">dentist garnish his Pistons contract this past season</a>.</p><p>Beasley ended up fumbling the bag, as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-malik-beasley-under-investigation-gambling">Pistons were reportedly set to offer him a three-year, $42 million contract</a> that no doubt could have reached the value of the deal that Robinson ended up signing had the 28-year-old stayed on the straight and narrow.</p><p>If anything, at the very least, Robinson has had no issues off the court in the past, unlike Beasley, who’s faced a mountain of them since the start of the decade. The Pistons at least made the right decision to prioritize the signing of someone who is nearly guaranteed to stay out of trouble, which makes him a better bet (<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-news-kendrick-perkins-given-troubling-malik-beasley-betting-probe-info">Beasley pun intended</a>) to contribute for the Pistons for the duration of his contract.</p><p>Alas, Robinson is already 30 years of age, and has been very inconsistent in the past. He can run hot and cold, and when his shot isn’t falling, he isn’t much of an offensive threat, with his off the bounce game being very limited. He’s also been targeted in the past in pick-and-rolls, but at 6’7″, he at least has the size to deal with opposing ballhandlers and be sort of a disruption.</p><p>Nevertheless, $16 million per year is the going rate for heavy-volume marksmen in today’s NBA. That is around the same kind of money that the likes of Grayson Allen, Klay Thompson, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Max Strus are making, so it’s not like this was an egregious overpay for the Pistons.</p><p>This was an area of need for the Pistons, and they paid the going rate for a player who’s going to fill an important role for them this upcoming season. And while this signing is not a slam dunk of a win for the Pistons, but this was one they needed to make if they were to keep in step with their peers in what is shaping up to be a wide-open contending picture in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>Moreover, according to Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press, the second year on Robinson’s contract is <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2025/07/01/detroit-pistons-trade-grade-duncan-robinson-nba-free-agency/84351270007/" rel="noopener">partially guaranteed</a> (making the third non-guaranteed), so the Pistons can simply cut him loose if he ends up struggling in the Motor City. There is some risk involved in this deal, but the Pistons mitigated most of that with the way they structured the contract.</p><p><b>Grade: B</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Reed and the Pistons agreed to two-year, $11 million deal as well.</p><p>Meanwhile, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/sacramento-kings/kings-news-dennis-schroder-leaves-pistons-free-agency-contract">Schroder is headed to</a> the Sacramento Kings on a three-year, $45 million deal, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-tim-hardaway-jr-free-agency-addition">Hardaway Jr. is joining</a> the Denver Nuggets on a minimum deal, and Beasley is currently a free agent with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-malik-beasley-first-post-gambling-investigation-revealed">an ongoing investigation</a>.</p><p>Duncan Robinson has played all seven years of his NBA career with the Miami Heat, starting in the 2018-19 season. We will see how he progresses.”</p><p>“There’s been a lot of things this year that you can’t even explain, different guys going out at not the most ideal times. I know Wiggs just really wants to be out here. And everybody can see it – when he’s out there, he makes us different.”</p><p>Spoelstra described how important it is to not rush Wiggins through the recovery process.</p><p>“But we also have to be responsible right now and make sure it doesn’t turn into something else,” Spoelstra said. “By the time we got to the fourth quarter, it looked like he was gutting it out. With intensive treatment, his body should respond.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-touts-duncan-robinsons-ignitability-amid-lineup-change">Robinson’s injury is not serious</a> either and he will be able to return soon if its is handled properly, Spoelstra believes.</p><p>“It’s different than last year,” Spoelstra said. “We think we will be able to manage it. We want to be responsible and give as much treatment and then appropriate ramp-up. Now, the reason we left them back is they can do more work around the clock,” he said. “Our trainers seem encouraged. If we’re on a 10-game losing streak or if we’ve won seven straight, you got to keep that same energy because, like I preach to my teammates, you never know what can happen on the other side. Those statistics would go along with 12 rebounds, five assists, and two steals he had somewhat of a bright side to the team’s performance with the loss.</p><p>“It’s tough when you’re down dudes and still have a chance to win and it slips out of your hands,” Adebayo said after the loss on Wednesday night. “As you see we can hang with the best of them.”</p><p>“Early in the season, everyone was questioning my shot, what I need to do different,” Adebayo continued. “Nothing has changed. I’m still taking the same shots. At some point, the table has got to turn.”</p><h2><b>Emotional return for Heat star, team going through “pain” at the moment</b></h2><p>Despite the loss, it was a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-kevin-love-legacy-emotional-cleveland-return">special moment for Heat veteran Kevin Love who got to return to Cleveland</a> where he won a championship in 2016 and played there from 2014-2023. This was his first game in the city playing for the Heat since he missed the previous two for personal reasons and a heel injury as he started the game with the injuries and <a href="https://x.com/NBA/status/1897444968093855893" rel="noopener">even gave him a tribute video.</a></p><p>“It was certainly emotional,” Love said. “Cleveland and Ohio will always mean a lot for me. Just a lot of love for a lot of people here. There’s significant improvement on both sides of the ball. Defensively, we’re playing way more consistently, making it tough. Things took a turn for the worse when the relationship between <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-jimmy-butler-believes-heat-made-changes-to-alienate-him">Heat president Pat Riley and Butler turned sour</a> after there was no contract extension offered. It eventually led to Jimmy’s exit.</p><p>In the aftermath of the blockbuster trade, Robinson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCrmWqLYzso&amp;t=1207s" rel="noopener">discussed</a> his relationship with Butler over the years, per The Young Man and the Three podcast.</p><p>“There have been great moments, there’s been challenging moments,” Robinson said. “That’s sort of what you get when you get somebody that’s as competitive and spirited as he is. He’s a ruthless competitor for sure.”</p><p>Although Robinson wishes things could have worked out with the Heat, he’s happy to see Butler get what he wanted in finding a home with the Warriors.</p><p>“Obviously sad to see him go, happy to see him go if that’s where he wants to be,” Robinson added. “Obviously he didn’t want to be in Miami any longer so you know end of an era I guess.”</p><p>Butler guided Robinson and the Heat to three trips to the Eastern Conference finals, and two NBA Finals appearances in 2020, and 2023. In Butler’s absence, Robinson has taken on an increased role for Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra. In the Heat’s last seven games, Robinson is averaging 15.0 points per game in 32.2 minutes.</p><p>With Bulter gone, the Heat’s newly acquired forward Andrew Wiggins will fill his void, while Duncan Robinson continues his role as the team’s 3-point specialist, shooting at a 37.7% clip from deep.</p><h2><b>Jimmy Butler on crying Pat Riley’s ‘unhinged’ last-ditch meeting</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Heat-forward-Duncan-Robinson-next-to-former-Heat-forward-Jimmy-Butler.jpg"><figcaption>David Butler II-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>As details emerged over what <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-jimmy-butler-thought-crying-pat-riley-unhinged-last-ditch-meeting">transpired between Heat president Pat Riley and Jimmy Butler</a>, the latest report reveals a last-ditch meeting between the two that ultimately spelled the end of Butler’s tenure with the Heat.</p><p>Riley <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6108043/2025/02/07/jimmy-butler-pat-riley-heat-tensions-nba-trade/" rel="noopener">attempted</a> to connect with Butler, who lost his father during the 2023-24 campaign, to how the Heat GM lost his father at 25, per The Athletic.</p><p>“According to multiple league sources with knowledge of the meeting, tears welled in Riley’s eyes as he attempted to connect with Butler on a human level. Both men had lost their fathers, and Riley’s famed toughness faded in the moment as he thought about Butler mourning his father’s death last season. But Riley’s vulnerability did not land with Butler. As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-bam-adebayo-envision-kelel-wares-upside-after-first-start">Heat duo of Adebayo and Ware has given the team a new dynamic</a>, one underrated aspect in the starting lineup is dynamic three-pointer shooter Duncan Robinson.</p><p>Robinson had been in and out of the starting lineup for Miami this season but with the new look being Adebayo, Ware, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler (his role on the team is uncertain), and himself, he fits in perfectly. As Adebayo and Ware will take up a lot of space with their size, the shooting and improved passing of Robinson will work perfectly as he speaks on <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nba/miami-heat/article297803433.html" rel="noopener">trusting the process of head coach Erik Spoelstra</a> according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.</p><p>“At this point, I’ve been playing for him for so long, I kind of see a move happening before it comes,” Robinson said. “Nothing surprises me at this point. And I also know he’s a Hall of Fame coach. I’m not questioning any moves he’s making. I’m buying into how to help us win no matter what is of asked of me.”</p><p>This season, Robinson has been averaging 11.1 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 42.3 percent from the field and 37.8 percent from beyond the arc.</p><h2><b>Heat’s Duncan Robinson on strengths of Bam Adebayo, Kel’el Ware</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/Duncan-Robinson-and-Bam-Adebayo-on-Jan.-25-2025.jpg"><figcaption>John Jones-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-touts-duncan-robinsons-ignitability-amid-lineup-change">The Heat star’s ignitability</a> is valuable to Spoelstra, especially when paired with Adebayo as the two have chemistry since they’ve been on the team for many years at this point. Robinson would even say that he prides himself in getting involved when out on the floor.</p><p>“I pride myself on getting Bam involved when he’s out there,” Robinson said. “He does so much for us defensively that gets covered [by media] but probably not [covered] enough. Anytime we can get him an easy one, that’s like gold for us. How much he exerts on defense, I want to try to make it easy for him. We are both constantly trying to read and figuring where spots in the defense are. Usually good things happen when we’re able to get it back to him.”</p><p>Looking at the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-kelel-ware-eye-popping-nba-feat-not-seen-1989-david-robinson">Heat’s first-round pick in Ware who has been impressing,</a> Robinson has nothing but praise for the 20-year-old who speaks on his presence as both running two-man actions are certain to be seen in the future.</p><p>“He [Ware] has so much vertical spacing, not that Bam doesn’t,” Robinson said. “His length and athleticism are really unique. There are moments you can throw it up there to him where they are not many guys in the league like that. He has a really good feel of getting out of screens and knowing when to screen and when to split out. He’s just so much more dynamic when you’re able to get it up to him at the rim.”</p><p>Robinson said he is at “peace” with whatever his role is on Miami, though he’s honest in saying he wants to start as the next chance to do so will be Monday against the Magic.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
