While the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-terry-rozier-is-ready-for-2025-26-season-despite-federal-investigation">Heat get ready for the 2025-26 season,</a> Fontechhio wants to express to the fanbase that he is not here to replace Robinson, which is no doubt a nearly improbable feat.</p><p>In an exclusive interview with ClutchPoints, Fontecchio would explain why he doesn’t want to “replace” Robinson, as he sees himself as a different player. While the similarities really range from their three-point shooting ability, with Fontecchio saying he watched Robinson when starting his NBA career, he wants to set himself apart.</p><p>“Just because, first of all, we’re different human beings and different players, I respect his game a lot,” Fontecchio said after Friday’s training camp session at Florida Atlantic University. “And I actually, you know, starting my NBA career, I watched a little bit of Duncan too, like when he was in Miami, you know, the way he comes off screens, the way he comes off handoffs. I try to, you know, take a little bit of that into my game. But, I’ll say I’m a different player, because I know I like to do multiple stuff probably, a lot more than just shooting.”</p><p>“I’m not saying Duncan is just a shooter, you know, I mean, but you know, I take pride in putting a lot of effort on defense, and I hope I can be effective for this Miami Heat team on that part of the floor, too,” Fontecchio continued. “So, you know, that’s something I really want to do. Fontecchio’s production over the last few years has been up and down, as during the 2023-24 season, he shot 40.1 percent from beyond the arc.</p><p>It would regress last season to 33.5 percent, though the forward in the past has attributed that to a left big toe injury in 2024. He’s hoping to get back to the production of shooting efficiently from deep and playing hard defense, a match made in heaven for Miami, as he has gone through his first training camp with the team.</p><p>“It’s been good, it’s been a great four days so far, it’s been a lot of training, a lot of up and down, and a lot of effort,” Fontechhio said. “But it’s been great so far, everybody has welcomed me with open arms, and it’s been a great feeling. I’m starting to, you know, get the sense of what it means to be a Miami player, and I like it.”</p><h2><b>Heat’s Simone Fontecchio on his EuroBasket experience</b></h2><p>As the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-erik-spoelstras-reaction-5-key-players-not-traveling-puerto-rico-game">Heat will play in Puerto Rico for the preseason opener</a> against the Orlando Magic, Fontecchio looks to play some minutes to get more comfortable in the system. However, he hasn’t really caught a break as Fontecchio participated in EuroBasket, representing his country of Italy, where he was a standout, even setting a country record with 39 points in one game.</p><p>A moment that stood out to Fontecchio is when Spoelstra and executive Adam Simon traveled to Italy to watch the 29-year-old and hang out with his family.</p><p>“Meant a lot for me,” Fontecchio said. “You know, for him to come over and see me, have dinner, spend the night, spend a day together. Especially because around that time, there were a lot of rumors going around, and obviously, I was over there with the national team. It’s not something that I can really control. And especially for me, my family, it wasn’t like an easy month, let’s say that. But I really appreciate the fact that he came over; he and Adam Simon came to see me, and it was a very good interaction. I really appreciate it.”</p><h2><b>Heat’s Erik Spoelstra issues a challenge to Simone Fontecchio</b></h2><p>With many players on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-explains-how-pelle-larsson-took-a-step-forward-after-rookie-season">Heat looking to take a step forward</a> this upcoming season, Fontecchio can solidify a role within the team’s rotation. If there is one person who has seen his positive traits, it’s Spoelstra, who expressed to ClutchPoints that Fontecchio <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1974163510117740847" rel="noopener">has a challenge for this season.</a></p><p>“Carries himself like an accomplished veteran, but he’s also humble. Where he wants to learn our system,” Spoelstra said Friday. “He wants to find where he can be effective. He’s really been competing on the defensive side of the floor. That’s the first thing I talked to him about is being able to use his size, and he has shown particularly in Eurobasket and one of his years in Utah, when they tasked him with defending a lot of the other teams’ better wing players. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Detroit Pistons</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>It’s been an interesting offseason for the Detroit Pistons, who have put their pursuit of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-malik-beasley-roster-spot-held-open-gambling-investigation">retaining free-agent sharpshooter Malik Beasley</a> on hold amid his federal investigation for potential gambling activities. In the meantime, the Pistons have signed bench scorers Caris LeVert <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-duncan-robinson-early-whirlwind-experience-detroit">and Duncan Robinson</a> to try to help fill that void in the event that Beasley doesn’t return.</p><p>Robinson has long been known as one of the elite three-point shooters in the NBA landscape today, and recently, the newly signed Pistons forward floated <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1957538693776044512" rel="noopener">an interesting idea</a> to spice up end-of-quarter scenarios.</p><p>“Last-second shots at the end of quarters should fall under a different field-goal percentage,” said Robinson, per the Old Man and the Three podcast.</p><p>For years now, NBA players have often declined shooting half-court shots at the end of quarters (unless it’s the fourth quarter of course) in an attempt to preserve their field-goal percentage.</p><p>Various ideas have been proposed to help fix this issue, and Robinson’s suggestion may just be what the NBA needs to implement in order to motivate players to let it fly at the buzzer.</p><h2><b>An interesting Pistons team</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Detroit-Pistons-guard-Cade-Cunningham-2-dribbles-defended-by-Atlanta-Hawks-guard-Dyson-Daniels-5.jpg"><figcaption>Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Last year, the Pistons had their best season in more than a decade, earning the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference and taking the New York Knicks to six hard-fought games in the first round of the playoffs.</p><p>The Pistons are building around franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham, who has turned himself into one of the elite point guards in the NBA today, and they’ve also got some other considerable young talent on their roster in players like Jalen Duren.</p><p>The Pistons will also be getting back wing scorer Jaden Ivey, who missed most of last year with an injury and should provide some extra perimeter playmaking for Detroit, especially in the event that Beasley does not return.</p><p>Robinson figures to provide not only his elite shooting but also some veteran experience, having been on multiple deep playoff runs during his days with the Miami Heat.</p><p>In any case, the Pistons’ season is slated to get underway on October 22 on the road vs. the Chicago Bulls.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Besides the<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-trade-grade-for-norman-powell-deal-with-clippers-jazz"> Heat trading for Norman Powell</a>, Fontecchio was comparatively a lateral move, though there are aspects where he can contribute, as he speaks more about that on Tuesday.</p><p>Fontecchio spoke to the media on Tuesday through Zoom and spoke about being traded to Miami and what he can offer to his new team. Funny enough, Fontecchio is a well-known three-point shooter, which could be seen as ironic when looking at who is going to Detroit and <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1942655870854140112" rel="noopener">even said that he compares himself</a> to Robinson.</p><p>“I watched a lot of Duncan Robinson in the last three years because I think our skill set is pretty similar,” Fontecchio said. “Of course, he’s a tremendous shooter and he did an amazing job all the years in Miami and I was always kind of looking at him, the way he was getting off shots and I always kind of wanted to do the same thing. I think I can try to play like a little bit off handoffs, running off screens, do a little bit of that.”</p><p>The new Miami forward wouldn’t find out immediately about the trade since he was in Italy, his home country. Meaning, he was in sleep when the news broke about the next step in his NBA journey.</p><p>“I’m in Italy right now, so I was asleep when everything happened,” Fontecchio said. “It was a little bit late over here. … But I’m happy. During the 2023-24 season, he shot 40.1 percent from deep, but it dipped last season to 33.5 percent with the 29-year-old attributing that to an injury to his left big toe in 2024.</p><p>“Especially last season, it’s been a little up and down for me,” Fontecchio said. “I was coming off an injury that was a pretty important surgery on my left foot that I had last summer. So it was a little bit of chasing my best shape all summer and then also during the regular season. So I think I was never my full self.</p><p>“But I think I felt pretty comfortable over the last two to three years in the NBA,” Fontecchio continued. “I worked a lot to feel that way and I’m working even harder right now during this summer. It’s the first summer after a couple years that I didn’t have any problems or injury or stuff like that, and I can really focus on myself, on my health, and my skill set. It’s something I was looking for, to work on it. But definitely before, I felt like I belonged in this league and I can do some damage. Robinson has spent his entire career in Miami so far, so this will be a big change for him. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-detroit-agrees-to-48-million-duncan-robinson-sign-and-trade-with-heat">He is coming to Detroit</a> on a three-year deal that is worth $48 million, but only $18.8 million <a href="https://x.com/MikeAScotto/status/1942426701650170043" rel="noopener">is guaranteed</a>. The first year of the deal is fully guaranteed, but the next two seasons are a different story.</p><p>“Sources: The Detroit Pistons signed Duncan Robinson to a three-year, $48 million deal, which is fully guaranteed at $16.8 million for the 2025-26 season, partially guaranteed $2 million out of a possible $16 million in the 2026-27 season, and non-guaranteed for the 2027-28 season,” Michael Scotto said in a post.</p><p>The $18.8 million that is guaranteed in this contract is similar to what Robinson’s early termination clause was with the Heat.</p><p>“Duncan Robinson’s $18.8M guaranteed with the Detroit Pistons via sign-and-trade is nearly the same amount as his early termination clause with the Miami Heat,” Scotto added. “Robinson, a career 40% 3PT shooter, returns to Michigan after playing for the Wolverines for three seasons in college.”</p><p>Robinson has one of the best stories in the NBA, and he is starting to write a new chapter. He started his college basketball career at the Division III level, but he started to make a name for himself after transferring to Michigan. Robinson was a lights out shooter for the Wolverines, but he didn’t get drafted to the NBA. He was able to sign a two-way contract with the Heat, however, and the rest is history.</p><p>People have been doubting Robinson for his entire career, and he just keeps proving people wrong. No one expected him to do anything with the Heat, and then in the 2019-20 season, he averaged 13.5 points per game and shot almost 45% from three. Robinson was a key player on a team that made a run to the NBA Finals, and he earned a $90 million contract because of it.</p><p>Robinson hasn’t quite reached that same level since, but he is still a great spark off the bench because of his three-point shooting ability. While his numbers weren’t as impressive last year, he still averaged double figures and shot just under 40% from deep.</p><p>Now, Duncan Robinson gets to make a return to the mitten state. He is loved by Wolverines fans as he helped the team make a run to the national title game in 2018, and a lot of those fans support the Pistons. After a historically putrid 2023-24 campaign, the Pistons front office started anew, bringing in JB Bickerstaff to be the team’s new head coach and then adding a slew of veterans to aid the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-cade-cunningham-eligible-269-million-deal-all-nba-selection">team’s rising young core led by Cade Cunningham</a>. In the end, they won 44 games and pushed the New York Knicks to six hard-fought games in the first round of the 2025 NBA playoffs.</p><p>In the process, the Pistons seem to have established themselves as a playoff team for the years to come, stumbling upon a formula for success around their nascent superstar, who, at just 23 years of age, made the All-NBA Third Team this past season.</p><p>They need shooters and tough, rugged defenders around Cunningham, and with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/denver-nuggets/nuggets-news-tim-hardaway-jr-free-agency-addition">departure of Tim Hardaway Jr. to the Denver Nuggets</a> and the likely blacklisting of Malik Beasley from the NBA amid his financial problems, the Pistons needed to bring in a new designated marksman.</p><p>They did just that, acquiring Duncan Robinson in a sign-and-trade sending Simone Fontecchio to the Miami Heat, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-detroit-agrees-to-48-million-duncan-robinson-sign-and-trade-with-heat">giving Robinson a three-year, $48 million contract</a>.</p><p>Did the Pistons overpay to sign Robinson to replace the shooters that they lost? Or did they simply pay the going rate for a player of Robinson’s caliber and skillset?</p><p>Here is the initial grade for the Pistons’ $48 million agreement with Robinson.</p><h2>The Pistons had to splash the cash for some shooting</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Duncan-Robinson-shoots-the-ball-e1737994353230.jpg"><figcaption>Sam Navarro-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Shooters who thrive off of movement make bank in today’s NBA, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-duncan-robinson-makes-20-million-contract-decision-amid-trade-rumors">Robinson simply capitalized on the Pistons’ need</a> for a shooter with his experience following the departure of Hardaway and the likely exit of Beasley.</p><p>This past season, Robinson averaged 11.0 points per game on 44/39/89 shooting splits, making 2.6 triples a night on high volume. He ranked 24th in the league this past campaign in total three-pointers made (197), and among bench players (players who started more than half of their games played on the bench), he ranked fifth.</p><p>Alas, Robinson would not have been the Pistons’ first choice signing. That would have been Beasley. But we all know what’s happening with the mercurial 28-year-old guard. He’s been facing gambling integrity allegations, all while facing a mountain of debt that had a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/nba-rumors-malik-beasleys-dentist-seized-part-pistons-paychecks-debt-issues">dentist garnish his Pistons contract this past season</a>.</p><p>Beasley ended up fumbling the bag, as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/detroit-pistons/pistons-news-malik-beasley-under-investigation-gambling">Pistons were reportedly set to offer him a three-year, $42 million contract</a> that no doubt could have reached the value of the deal that Robinson ended up signing had the 28-year-old stayed on the straight and narrow.</p><p>If anything, at the very least, Robinson has had no issues off the court in the past, unlike Beasley, who’s faced a mountain of them since the start of the decade. The Pistons at least made the right decision to prioritize the signing of someone who is nearly guaranteed to stay out of trouble, which makes him a better bet (<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-news-kendrick-perkins-given-troubling-malik-beasley-betting-probe-info">Beasley pun intended</a>) to contribute for the Pistons for the duration of his contract.</p><p>Alas, Robinson is already 30 years of age, and has been very inconsistent in the past. He can run hot and cold, and when his shot isn’t falling, he isn’t much of an offensive threat, with his off the bounce game being very limited. He’s also been targeted in the past in pick-and-rolls, but at 6’7″, he at least has the size to deal with opposing ballhandlers and be sort of a disruption.</p><p>Nevertheless, $16 million per year is the going rate for heavy-volume marksmen in today’s NBA. That is around the same kind of money that the likes of Grayson Allen, Klay Thompson, Bogdan Bogdanovic and Max Strus are making, so it’s not like this was an egregious overpay for the Pistons.</p><p>This was an area of need for the Pistons, and they paid the going rate for a player who’s going to fill an important role for them this upcoming season. And while this signing is not a slam dunk of a win for the Pistons, but this was one they needed to make if they were to keep in step with their peers in what is shaping up to be a wide-open contending picture in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>Moreover, according to Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press, the second year on Robinson’s contract is <a href="https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nba/pistons/2025/07/01/detroit-pistons-trade-grade-duncan-robinson-nba-free-agency/84351270007/" rel="noopener">partially guaranteed</a> (making the third non-guaranteed), so the Pistons can simply cut him loose if he ends up struggling in the Motor City. We will see how he progresses.”</p><p>“There’s been a lot of things this year that you can’t even explain, different guys going out at not the most ideal times. I know Wiggs just really wants to be out here. And everybody can see it – when he’s out there, he makes us different.”</p><p>Spoelstra described how important it is to not rush Wiggins through the recovery process.</p><p>“But we also have to be responsible right now and make sure it doesn’t turn into something else,” Spoelstra said. “By the time we got to the fourth quarter, it looked like he was gutting it out. With intensive treatment, his body should respond.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-touts-duncan-robinsons-ignitability-amid-lineup-change">Robinson’s injury is not serious</a> either and he will be able to return soon if its is handled properly, Spoelstra believes.</p><p>“It’s different than last year,” Spoelstra said. “We think we will be able to manage it. We want to be responsible and give as much treatment and then appropriate ramp-up. Now, the reason we left them back is they can do more work around the clock,” he said. “Our trainers seem encouraged. That’s unreasonable. To me, that’s something that’s in your character to be a quitter and obviously I’m not a quitter so I’m not going to let my teammates quit.”</p><p>Adebayo understands the importance of not letting the team’s energy get out of control.</p><p>“I bring the same positive optimistic energy every day,” Adebayo said. “It doesn’t matter what we’re going through. If we’re on a 10-game losing streak or if we’ve won seven straight, you got to keep that same energy because, like I preach to my teammates, you never know what can happen on the other side. And I also know he’s a Hall of Fame coach. I’m not questioning any moves he’s making. We are both constantly trying to read and figuring where spots in the defense are. There are moments you can throw it up there to him where they are not many guys in the league like that. He has a really good feel of getting out of screens and knowing when to screen and when to split out. While it was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-jimmy-butler-shares-honest-admission-about-form-in-first-game-back-from-injury">Heat star Jimmy Butler who led the way</a> during that game, it was star Duncan Robinson who made his mark with the starters, showing his versatility as head coach Erik Spoelstra pointed out his biggest strengths.</p><p>Robinson has been crucial to Miami for the last six seasons he’s been with them as the team’s best three-point shooter, but he’s added more to his arsenal since then on both sides of the ball. It was a seamless transition for Robinson going from the second unit to the starting lineup as Spoelstra said to ClutchPoints that he is “comfortable” playing with anybody on the team and cites his <a href="https://x.com/ZachWeinberger/status/1859663154676150761" rel="noopener">“ignitability”</a> as a strength.</p><p>“He’s done both, and he’s done both those roles very well over the seven years,” Spoelstra said. “He’s comfortable playing with Jimmy and Bam. He also is comfortable developing a really good connection with K-Love [Kevin Love] and Jaime [Jaquez Jr.]. You know, off the bench at this point, you need all of it. I love his ignitability. And you know that’s coming to, Tyler’s shown that right now, Duncan has the ability to blow open games. Either way, Robinson does not seem to care about being labeled as a starter or a benchwarmer as long as he is a part of a winning basketball team.</p><p>If his name were to be called to the starting unit, though, it would not be much of a “huge adjustment,” as Robinson said to ClutchPoints.</p><p>“Not really a huge adjustment,” Robinson said. “I mean, I played with a lot of those guys for a lot of minutes, maybe not necessarily as a group, but I’ve shared the court a lot with Tyler [Herro] and Jimmy [Butler] and Bam [Adebayo] and Haywood [Highsmith] a lot over the years. So, you know, just good to get a win, obviously.”</p><p>“Yeah, I play just about every role there is to play,” Robinson continued. “Starting, off the bench, not playing. So obviously, I want to be out there in any capacity, whatever it requires.”</p><h2><b>Heat’s Duncan Robinson on the different lineup changes</b></h2><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-erik-spoelstra-identifies-important-key-behind-developing-miami-chemistry">chemistry of the Heat’s lineups</a> has been a narrative this season, especially with the original starting unit, but Robinson sees it as an overblown issue. However, he would acknowledge that finding the right rotations and those players working well with each other will be important to achieve the goals they are aiming for on offense and especially defense.</p><p>“We’re more caught up in just playing good basketball,” Robinson said. “We all like each other get along, that’s not really an issue. It’s more about just finding the way to be difficult to guard and to get stops. So finding groups that work and kind of mesh and blends is going to take a little bit of time and working through.”</p><p>In the aforementioned win over the 76ers, Robinson finished with 13 points on five for 14 shooting, which included an uncharacteristic two for 10 from beyond the arch. Still, it was a solid month of November for the 30-year-old as he averaged 12.6 points per game while shooting 42.7 percent from the field and 41. 7 percent from deep.</p><p>At any rate, the Heat have not been playing up to their liking as they are currently 6-7 on the season as even Robinson said that they are not up to their standard.</p><p>“Definitely not where we want to be,” Robinson said. “We know we’re capable of better and more. And there’s definitely some good things that we got we can take away from, but there’s a lot of things we’re going improve on.”</p><p>At any rate, Miami looks to build off their win Monday and take it into Sunday against the Dallas Mavericks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

This was evident in the playoffs, where Robinson looked like he was limited in what he could do on the court.</p><p>However,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-why-duncan-robinson-is-primed-for-bounce-back-year"> Robinson should be primed for a solid season</a> after a full offseason of recovery, as he even talked about to The Miami Herald how there are <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nba/miami-heat/article292562364.html" rel="noopener">“no limitations.”</a></p><p>“I feel great,” Robinson said. “We took all the necessary steps, seeing who we needed to see.
