Powell had until Tuesday to exercise or bypass the option,” Stein wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Powell doesn’t receive many minutes at this point in his career. The 33-year-old only recorded 10 minutes per outing in 2024-25, but he played an important role at times since the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-unprecedented-injury-situation-suns">Mavericks dealt with immense injury trouble</a> throughout the season.</p><p>Powell, who was acquired from the Boston Celtics in 2014-15, has played in Dallas ever since. Powell has played a number of different roles as well.</p><p>There was a time when he started at center for Dallas. In other years, he was a backup center. Powell now serves as the third-string big man off the bench behind Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford. His presence gives Jason Kidd someone he can rely upon if injuries do surface, though. And, as mentioned, Powell’s veteran leadership is crucial.</p><p>The Mavericks are currently preparing for the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday, June 25. Barring a shocking turn-of-events, Dallas is expected to select Duke’s Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick in the draft. Despite avoiding a serious injury, Irving is <a href="https://twitter.com/espn_macmahon/status/1733611480048890032" rel="noopener">reportedly dealing with</a> a significant amount of pain and his status for Monday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies is currently uncertain.</p><p>The Mavericks later announced that Irving suffered a right heel contusion. He returned to Dallas to begin treatment but there is no timetable for his return.</p><p>Irving suffered the heel injury after Powell fell on it during Friday’s game versus the Portland Trail Blazers. Dallas was able to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-dante-exum-performance-blazers" rel="noopener">emerge victorious</a> despite Irving’s mid-game departure, but the attention quickly turned to his injury status. Mavs fans were hoping for the best, and thankfully it appears that Irving is okay.</p><p>Still, Irving’s status will be worth closely monitoring ahead of the Mavs-Grizzlies clash.</p><h2><b>Kyrie Irving’s status vs. Grizzles in question</b></h2><p>The Mavs have won back-to-back games after defeating the Blazers on Friday and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. Dallas is aiming to earn their third consecutive victory Monday on the road in Memphis before returning home to play the second of a back-to-back against the Los Angeles Lakers.</p><p>Dallas will proceed with caution when it comes to Irving’s injury status. Powell is said to be the favorite to start–perhaps thanks to his familiarity and chemistry with Luka Doncic–though they also have high hopes on Holmes and his potential resurgence with Dallas after struggling in the past two seasons with the Sacramento Kings.</p><p>“While Dallas could still trade for a big man, the <a href="https://theathletic.com/4686850/2023/07/14/mavericks-rumors-summer-league-trade-rookies/" rel="noopener">team is content</a> to enter next season with the centers currently on the roster,” Tim Cato of The Athletic reported.</p><p>“If that’s the case, Dwight Powell would be the favorite to retake his starting spot. But multiple team employees have expressed optimism in a rejuvenated Richaun Holmes after the 29-year-old center fell out of the Sacramento Kings’ rotation last season. … The thinking, those sources say, is that Holmes only lost his rotation spot after Sacramento’s offense was reimagined around Domantas Sabonis and will fit better into Dallas’ guard-based schemes.”</p><p>While the Mavs could really use a dominant big man behind Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, it’s actually interesting to see <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavs-surprising-richaun-holmes-plan-revealed" rel="noopener">how Richaun Holmes will thrive</a> alongside the two. When he was a full-time starter back in 2020-23 with the Kings, he actually averaged 14.2 points, 8.3 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game–and that was when he was the fourth option on the team behind De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield and Harrison Barnes.</p><p>Imagine what he can do with a bigger role and more minutes. After making a hefty investment in Kyrie Irving on Friday, the front office is bringing back unrestricted free agent Dwight Powell. The longtime Mavs center <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1675247009199013889" rel="noopener">signed a three-year contract</a> for $12 million, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.</p><p>Powell has been with the franchise since being traded from the Boston Celtics his rookie year in 2014. While starting more than 60 games in each of his last two seasons for Dallas, the 31-year-old is best seen as a role player who can hold his own defensively. Retaining his services means that 2023 first-round pick Dereck Lively II will probably be eased into starting center responsibilities.</p><p>That revelation may not thrill fans, but Powell’s veteran presence could help the newcomer quickly become acclimated in the NBA. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-free-agency-christian-wood" rel="noopener">The Mavericks are unlikely</a> to land Christian Wood in NBA free agency and<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-mark-cuban-spills-nba-draft-day-trade-dereck-lively-ii" rel="noopener"> just traded away</a> Davis Bertans, so having another guy who can play the four if needed is wise. Though, the organization must remember how last year’s formula worked out for them in the end.</p><p>Dwight Powell cannot be scapegoated for the Mavs’ disastrous season, but tweaking the lineup is essential if the team is going to come back strong in October. Balance and depth are also key.</p><p>Utilizing the native of Toronto, Canada in a similar supporting role while also being able to rely on others like Lively to step up right away is the best chance Mark Cuban and the Mavericks have at removing themselves from one of the more inexcusable embarrassments in recent NBA memory.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
