Dwight Powell, who has been on the Mavs longer than any other player on the current roster, <a href="https://x.com/TheSteinLine/status/1936209352546787579" rel="noopener">reportedly exercised</a> his $4 million player option for the 2025-26 season, NBA insider Marc Stein reports.</p><p>“The Mavericks’ Dwight Powell is activating his $4 million player option for next season, league sources tell @TheSteinLine. Powell had until Tuesday to exercise or bypass the option,” Stein wrote on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>Powell doesn’t receive many minutes at this point in his career. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavs-news-dwight-powell-3-year-12-million-contract">Mavs value everything he brings to the roster</a> as a veteran leader, though. The 33-year-old only recorded 10 minutes per outing in 2024-25, but he played an important role at times since the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/mavericks-news-jason-kidd-unprecedented-injury-situation-suns">Mavericks dealt with immense injury trouble</a> throughout the season.</p><p>Powell, who was acquired from the Boston Celtics in 2014-15, has played in Dallas ever since. He’s averaged 6.7 points,, 4.2 rebounds and 1.0 assists per outing across 705 games played (245 starts) in his career. Powell has played a number of different roles as well.</p><p>There was a time when he started at center for Dallas. In other years, he was a backup center. Powell now serves as the third-string big man off the bench behind Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford. His presence gives Jason Kidd someone he can rely upon if injuries do surface, though. And, as mentioned, Powell’s veteran leadership is crucial.</p><p>The Mavericks are currently preparing for the upcoming 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday, June 25. Barring a shocking turn-of-events, Dallas is expected to select Duke’s Cooper Flagg with the first overall pick in the draft. Despite avoiding a serious injury, Irving is <a href="https://twitter.com/espn_macmahon/status/1733611480048890032" rel="noopener">reportedly dealing with</a> a significant amount of pain and his status for Monday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies is currently uncertain.</p><p>The Mavericks later announced that Irving suffered a right heel contusion. He returned to Dallas to begin treatment but there is no timetable for his return.</p><p>Irving suffered the heel injury after Powell fell on it during Friday’s game versus the Portland Trail Blazers. Dallas was able to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-dante-exum-performance-blazers" rel="noopener">emerge victorious</a> despite Irving’s mid-game departure, but the attention quickly turned to his injury status. Mavs fans were hoping for the best, and thankfully it appears that Irving is okay.</p><p>Still, Irving’s status will be worth closely monitoring ahead of the Mavs-Grizzlies clash.</p><h2><b>Kyrie Irving’s status vs. Grizzles in question</b></h2><p>The Mavs have won back-to-back games after defeating the Blazers on Friday and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday. Dallas is aiming to earn their third consecutive victory Monday on the road in Memphis before returning home to play the second of a back-to-back against the Los Angeles Lakers.</p><p>Dallas will proceed with caution when it comes to Irving’s injury status. And as aforementioned, there is currently no timetable for his return.</p><p>The Mavs will address the situation on Sunday and Monday to see how he’s feeling. Powell is said to be the favorite to start–perhaps thanks to his familiarity and chemistry with Luka Doncic–though they also have high hopes on Holmes and his potential resurgence with Dallas after struggling in the past two seasons with the Sacramento Kings.</p><p>“While Dallas could still trade for a big man, the <a href="https://theathletic.com/4686850/2023/07/14/mavericks-rumors-summer-league-trade-rookies/" rel="noopener">team is content</a> to enter next season with the centers currently on the roster,” Tim Cato of The Athletic reported.</p><p>“If that’s the case, Dwight Powell would be the favorite to retake his starting spot. After making a hefty investment in Kyrie Irving on Friday, the front office is bringing back unrestricted free agent Dwight Powell. The longtime Mavs center <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1675247009199013889" rel="noopener">signed a three-year contract</a> for $12 million, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.</p><p>Powell has been with the franchise since being traded from the Boston Celtics his rookie year in 2014. While starting more than 60 games in each of his last two seasons for Dallas, the 31-year-old is best seen as a role player who can hold his own defensively. Retaining his services means that 2023 first-round pick Dereck Lively II will probably be eased into starting center responsibilities.</p><p>That revelation may not thrill fans, but Powell’s veteran presence could help the newcomer quickly become acclimated in the NBA. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavericks-free-agency-christian-wood" rel="noopener">The Mavericks are unlikely</a> to land Christian Wood in NBA free agency and<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-mark-cuban-spills-nba-draft-day-trade-dereck-lively-ii" rel="noopener"> just traded away</a> Davis Bertans, so having another guy who can play the four if needed is wise. However, there’s also a reason why he’s one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-kyle-kuzmas-nsfw-comment-on-chris-pauls-mental-acuity" rel="noopener">most annoying opponents</a> to face on the court. And that much was evident late in the Phoenix Suns’ 99-95 loss to the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks who saw <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-luka-doncic-hobbles-off-court-with-injury-vs-suns" rel="noopener">Luka Doncic exit the game</a> with an injury.</p><p>With 12 seconds left in the game, and the Mavs up by just one point, 96-95, Reggie Bullock split a pair of free throws. However, Dwight Powell came to his rescue. Powell nabbed the offensive board and drew yet another foul for the Mavs with a chance to give them a two-possession lead. However, Powell isn’t the best free-throw shooter, as he went to the charity stripe having made only one of his four attempts on the night.</p><p>Thus, Chris Paul, being the competitor that he is, <a href="https://twitter.com/Dubs408/status/1618845037990916097?s=20&amp;t=enHHkX6TonPQ2ofXz6Ju-w" rel="noopener">tried to get in</a> Dwight Powell’s head. But that didn’t work. Perhaps it’s just too difficult to execute? Doncic, however, made it look so easy.</p><p>Props to Poeltl though for immediately rotating on defense even after getting embarrassed by Doncic, who has been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/luka-doncic/b74d0a0c/stats">putting up big numbers</a> yet again. Other players would’ve given up, laughed at themselves, or even retaliate after getting nutmegged.</p><p>Just recall the incident last year involving Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and then-Portland Trail Blazers forward Trevor Ariza. During this time, Young had been nutmegging opponents almost every game. He succeeded against Ariza but the veteran pushed the heck out of him to show his disapproval of the move. He averaged 9.4 points on 63.8 percent shooting from the field, to go along with 5.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 40 games.</p><p>Now eight months removed from the operating table, Powell shared that he has not experienced any setbacks whatsoever and has no movement limitations so far. Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, Cuban implemented a plan to ensure that arena workers will get “the comfort” they need as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-nba-season-suspended-after-rudy-gobert-tests-positive-for-coronavirus/" rel="noopener noreferrer">NBA shut down operations</a>.</p><blockquote>“And that’s also outside of this kind of situation. That’s something I was taught and shown from Day 1 getting here from Mark [Cuban] and from Coach [Rick] Carlisle and from Dirk, especially, at that time when he was here. praised for his relentlessness on the glass and his ability to make the occasional perimeter shot.</p><p>The Mavs also reportedly reached out to free-agent center Joakim Noah, who has been out of the league this season but helped the Memphis Grizzlies in the second half of the 2018-19 season.</p><p>The veteran is reportedly still waiting for a call from NBA teams, though the Mavs will do their due diligence before filling the vacant spot Powell left in the roster after being ruled out for the remainder of the season.</p><p>Andre Drummond is the most prominent name in the market, but acquiring comes with the gaudy commitment of re-signing him in the summer for a hefty figure.
