It was a sensible addition for the rebuilding Rockets, who have several young, athletic guards to develop. Now, though, Green is leaving the bench for a chance to get back on the NBA hardwood.</p><p>Although Green is 35 years old and hasn’t played since the 2018-19 season, now is the perfect time for ex-NBA players to attempt comebacks. Older veterans like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-isaiah-thomas-joining-dallas-lakers-stint/">Isaiah Thomas</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pacers-news-fan-favorite-lance-stephenson-running-it-back-with-indiana/">Lance Stephenson</a> are getting chances to come back with several teams dealing with players in health and safety protocols. Green’s odds of making it back to the league, even for just 10 days, are greatly improved as teams become more in need of depth.</p><p>Green’s ability as a spot-up shooter from deep — he shot 35.9 percent on 5.3 3-point attempts per game over his last three seasons — give him a purpose on offense. His electrifying dunks may come less frequently, he can still <a href="https://www.nba.com/rockets/video/wsc/teams/e2208598-4533-31c3-d8d0-b524804f81b1">throw it down</a> with authority. In addition to being a pretty capable shooter and helpful contributor to Houston’s deep playoff runs, fans embraced the Houston native with open arms and players loved being around his positive attitude. Green made some posts on social media alluding the mental health struggles he dealt with leading up to his retirement and even talked about it on at the press conference.</p><p>“I’ve been going through some things this past year trying to get right,” said Gerald Green. “It was a little tough for me. Working out every day trying to fulfil my dream. With some things in life, you just have to know how to close the chapter and open up another one.”</p><p>Rockets GM Rafael Stone had been trying to recruit Green for this position for a couple years dating back to the pandemic. Green had always considered coaching one day, but didn’t want to officially hang it up until now. He also credited Rockets ownership for being aggressive in the recruitment effort.</p><p>“It’s a little bittersweet and I get that,” said Stone. “Just because you’re not a player doesn’t mean there’s not a spot for you. I think Gerald’s a special guy. You guys know him. Gerald’s the type of person who brings a smile to your face when you’re in his presence. There’s no business or organization that’s not better for having people like that.”</p><p>Stone is one hundred percent in his evaluation of Green as a person. From a media perspective, he was always unselfish with his time, a joy to interview, and just an overall good human being. It’s not hard to see players becoming fond of him as an addition to the staff. However, there is the question of how he can substantively help the Rockets as a basketball team amidst their rebuilding process.</p><p>“It’s going to be a tough journey,” said Gerald Green. “There’s not a lot of guys who came out of high school being so young [like me]. I think my job is to make sure those guys get the right guidance. Tell them the things that I wasn’t told when I was a young kid. We got several talented guys on our team. We got a very nice core. My job is to make sure our growing pains aren’t pains, they’re just lessons.”</p><p>This is where Green’s positivity isn’t just a plaudit, but a helpful attribute. The Rockets are going to lose a lot of games over the next couple years and for young players that have won at every level they’ve been at it, it may feel like the sky is falling. Losing sucks the energy out of a building and Green is exactly the kind of person you want in those environments. He was the quintessential spirit-lifter during the James Harden and Chris Paul era, so that will be part of his new role with the team.</p><p>“I would say Gerald can be an asset to every team in the NBA,” said Stone. “He’s lived an NBA life – like a super full one. We have a bunch of players on our team who are starting their journey. So I think in that respect, Gerald’s great. Gerald’s in the gym all the time. I think his work habits and everything else, just his approach to the game is going to be really helpful. I think it’s going to be great for a really young team that’s trying to build the right habits.”</p><p>In addition to the positive attitude and work ethic, Green had this confidence to him as a player that could rub off well on young players. As a shooter, there wasn’t a shot that was too deep or too contested for Green. If someone like K.J. Martin or Usman Garuba gets too timid from beyond the arc,<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/houston-rockets/stats" rel="noopener"> it’s not hard to see</a> Gerald Green being someone who instills confidence.</p><p>Evaluating coaching hires are really difficult and they’re even tougher when it’s an assistant, but this is probably a move that will receive unanimous approval from fans, media, players, and other coaches on the staff.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Houston native joined his hometown Rockets in 2017 and played two seasons with them alongside James Harden and Chris Paul.</p><p>Green played 12 seasons in the NBA with eight total teams as a shooting guard and small forward. He was one of the most entertaining dunkers of his era and averaged 9.7 points in 19.8 minutes per game in 658 games, which included 118 starts. He was a McDonald’s All American and was drafted 18th overall in the 2005 draft straight out of high school.</p><p>With the rebuilding Rockets, Green will have plenty of young talent to help nurture. Houston has three athletic shooting guards in Kevin Porter Jr., Jalen Green and Josh Christopher for Green to develop. Recently, the Rockets (<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/a-monta-ellis-return-to-mavs-would-be-perfect-for-luka-doncic/">in addition to the Dallas Mavericks</a>) worked out 35-year-old Monta Ellis. (He was under contract with the Rockets through the 2019-20 season, but did not play due to a foot injury.) He played his last two seasons with the Rockets, <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/greenge01.html#2018-2019-sum:per_game">averaging 10.3 points in 21.1 minutes per game and hitting 36% of his threes. </a></p><p>With the Rockets expected to be nowhere near a playoff spot after trading away James Harden to the Brooklyn Nets and entering a full franchise rebuild, there’s little downside to taking a flyer on a veteran like Green. Despite his age, he’s an athletic wing that can spread the floor. If Head Coach Stephen Silas decides to give the keys to the offense to no. 2 pick Jalen Green right away, he’ll need to be surrounded by shooters in order to have room to operate. Green, a Houston native and fan favorite, will try to make the team during camp after missing last season due to a broken foot.</p><p>— Tim MacMahon (@espn_macmahon) <a href="https://twitter.com/espn_macmahon/status/1333443788115677186?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">November 30, 2020</a></p></blockquote><p></p></figure><p>The 34-year-old has been a tenured journeyman since he came to the league in 2005 when he was drafted by the Boston Celtics. Green also saw stints in the NBA G-League and overseas to use as a springboard to return to the association.</p><p>His most recent stint was with the Rockets where he returned to his hometown back in the 2017-2018 season. He recorded 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.6 assists in 41 games played in a bench role.</p><p>Green was brought back for the second-straight season but his numbers dipped compared to his previous campaign with the team. He averaged norms of 9.2 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 0.5 assists in 73 appearances and was still relied on to bring much-needed energy for the team’s second unit.</p><p>He eventually sat out the entire 2019-2020 season after he suffered a broken bone in his foot which sidelined him for an extended amount of time. The Rockets then dealt him in a four-team trade involving the Denver Nuggets back in February of 2020 but was ultimately waived by the team.</p><p>Gerald Green emerged as a fan favorite for the team considering his roots that can be traced in Houston, Texas. His arrival would potentially bring positive contributions for the Rockets’ cause in the upcoming season considering the turmoil that the team has seen in the recent offseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
