This is why when he pops off for an excellent scoring night the way he did on Tuesday when he scored 31 points to lead the Spurs to a 126-119 win over the Memphis Grizzlies, the entire team raves over him.</p><p>The Spurs had so much fun after their win over the Grizzlies that seemingly the entire team was present behind Barnes during his postgame interview with the FanDuel Sports Network booth. They were having so much fun that Dylan Harper, the second overall pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, was pulled aside and asked what his thoughts were on Barnes’ incredible night. And Harper did not disappoint with his response as he showered Barnes with <a href="https://twitter.com/NBA/status/1996077056409637255?s=20" rel="noopener">all the praise he could give</a>.</p><p>“God blesses him every day. 14 years in? They’ve also been without Stephon Castle for the past seven games. The 33-year-old forward has yet to miss a game since joining the Silver and Black in the summer of 2024. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/exclusive-harrison-barnes-guiding-victor-wembanyama-spurs-next-generation">His veteran presence has helped guide one of the youngest rosters</a> in the NBA. He scores in double figures most nights while shooting at or above 50 percent. Steady, though, doesn’t aptly describe Barnes’ performance against the Memphis Grizzlies.</p><p>A day after finding out they’d be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-out-weeks-calf-strain">without Victor Wembanyama for probably the next month</a> and hours after learning reigning Rookie of the Year <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-stephon-castle-gets-tentative-injury-update-on-hip-flexor">Stephon Castle would likely be out for a couple of weeks as well</a>, Barnes scored the game’s only seven points during a critical two and a half minute stretch late that propelled San Antonio to a shorthanded victory.</p><p>The first of those points gave the Spurs a 102-101 lead with 2:13 remaining in the game. They came on a sweeping hook shot as Barnes made his way from the three-point line to the baseline and then into the lane.</p><p>“Hey man, every once in a while, you throw out some things,” Barnes said about the attempt that’s normally not a part of his arsenal. “But, it felt good. Following his Kareem Abdul-Jabbar impression, Barnes drove into the lane from just inside the opposite sideline for a fade-away jumper that put the Spurs up three. A 3-pointer with 53.2 seconds left concluded the Barnes run that essentially put the Grizzlies away.</p><p>“It was a good stretch. Just trying to figure out just different ways,” Barnes shared before pivoting to the contest’s big picture.</p><p>“Guys stepping up, doing different things to win, and that was just one of the shots.”</p><p>Earlier in that fourth quarter, the 14th-year forward drove the lane for his most emphatic bucket of the night.</p><p>“I haven’t had that many dunks this season. That came out of nowhere, honestly,” Barnes admitted. “It really did. I didn’t think I was going to get the angle to go left and then I did, and then just kind of jumped, and I was just up there.”</p><p>The former Golden State Warrior and Sacramento King averaged nearly 20 points per game while with the Dallas Mavericks in between those two other stints. Thanks in part to averaging between 12 and 13 points per outing in San Antonio, Barnes’ career scoring average is 13.9.</p><p>With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-deaaron-fox-drops-bold-statement-spurs-injury-woes">Wembanyama, Castle, and Dylan Harper</a> – the second overall pick of this summer’s draft – all out, that didn’t matter much vs. Memphis.</p><p>“Anytime you go to the gym, you always work to be in those positions.” Barnes shared. “You may not be in those positions for 30 games, but you always work to have that ready and available.”</p><p>The Aimes, Iowa native has started every single game the Spurs have played since the start of last season. During the interview, Barnes also shared a nugget that foreshadowed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/clutchpoints-nba-mvp-mondays-shai-gilgeous-alexander-reclaims-top-spot-from-victor-wembanyama">what we’re seeing from Victor Wembanyama</a>.</p><p>“He had an unbelievable summer,” the second-year Spur told ClutchPoints. “He’s worked extremely hard and I think that his play will show what he’s done.”</p><p>Wembanyama’s summer has been well chronicled. In between spending time with monks at a Shaolin temple in China and visiting NASA in Houston, the generational talent trained with NBA legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett. It all came after Wemby’s 2024-2025  season ended due to blood clots diagnosed at the end of his first All-Star Weekend as a player.</p><p>“There’s been very few people in this league since I’ve been in this league that I think have put together a body of work that he put in this summer,” Barnes added. “And I know he feels good about that. When asked about the team’s crowded point guard room, the 33-year-old veteran mentioned Stephon Castle.</p><p>“I think the thing is Steph, it’s funny. Every time I look at his stuff, I feel like he’s growing. I feel like he came in the league at 6-foot-4, and now I don’t know if Steph is 6-foot-6. It’s just crazy.”</p><p>The parallel to questions about Wembanyama’s true height proved noteworthy. So did how Barnes continued with the rest of his answer.</p><p>“Guys can play above their position, but I think in general the league is going more toward just having as many highly skilled, high IQ basketball players on the court at one time,” he said. “In some regards, people want to talk about it’s multi-positional position-less basketball, and then on the other side it’s like, well, we have too many point guards. So it’s like there’s a balance between, ‘Okay, are they just simply good basketball players or are they point guards?'”</p><p>Thus far, the Spurs haven’t had to deal with multiple players at the same position. De’Aaron Fox started the season on the injured list.
