We sat down with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-harrison-barnes-challenges-commitment-big-summer">33-year-old Barnes</a>, whose <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-cut-off-question-kevin-durant-trade-rumors">name came up in off-season chatter</a> when the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/giannis-antetokounmpo-trade-grades-for-espns-spurs-bucks-proposal">Spurs were linked to Giannis Antetokounmpo</a> or <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/why-spurs-made-right-decision-pass-kevin-durant-trade">Kevin Durant</a>, for an exclusive interview ahead of a season that many think could land the Spurs back in the playoffs.</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> “Can you believe that this is your number 14 in the NBA for Harrison Barnes?”</p><p><b>Harrison Barnes:</b> “It’s wild. Yeah, definitely, just grateful to be here. Grateful to continue to play the game I love and to have this experience with this group.”</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> “How was the summer for you?”</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> “Summer was great. I thought we did a lot as a group just in terms of building, working out, training. Got a chance to spend time with the family, which is always nice, and I’m excited for this season.”</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> “You look at the moves that the Spurs made this off-season. Adding a couple of quality veterans like Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk, adding a Dylan Harper; the young guys are a year older. I imagine the expectations for this group are pretty high?”</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> “I think the biggest thing for us is just how can we consistently show up every single day? That was the thing that we preached a lot last year. We learned a lot as a group, how to do that as a collective. And I think the same process applies this year as well.”</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> “I know you’ve been a great influence on these young guys and this young core, and I remember giggling last year when someone asked you if you consider yourself part of this core. You’re like, ‘I hope so. I think so.’ Sometimes when you’re a little bit older than the mid-20’s, people tend to dismiss that person as playing a secondary role. And I get that’s the nature of the league nowadays…”</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> “For sure.”</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> Heck, there were times last year that people thought you were 40 years old like Chris Paul, just because you were the only other veteran who was part of the rotation.</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> (laughs)</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> “But with so much young talent here, what’s that been like to have that role for this group of guys?”</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> “I think it’s big, right? I mean, a lot of these guys, there’s so much potential, talent. They have so much more basketball ahead of them than behind them. I think the biggest thing is, how can we focus on now, right? How can we take all that and say, ‘Guys, let’s be great every single day and focus on this season and this moment?’ It’s always easy to look ahead and try to wonder and hope, but we can have urgency, and we have control over now. So let’s keep our focus here and try to maximize that the best we can.”</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> “You won the title with Golden State. A young nucleus there. You got to Sacramento, helped them break a long playoff drought. I know it’s tough for players to compare because teams are different, individuals are different and situations are different. That said, do you see similarities between this group and the young core that you won the title with and went to back-to-back Finals with in Golden State? Do you see similarities between this group and that Kings group that qualified for the postseason for the first time in nearly 20 years?”</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> “Yeah, I think the biggest thing with this group that I see, which makes us very unique, is the level of talent that we have from our young players. You go to the locker room and they’re like, ‘Yo, how old are you? ‘I’m, you know, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24,’ whatever it may be. There are so many guys who are young and so talented, so it’s like I said earlier. Let’s focus on the now, let’s focus on what can we do today, tomorrow, in camp, in the preseason, getting ready for game one of this regular season and not just say, ‘Okay, yeah, in three or four years, you’ll be X, Y and Z as a player,’ and just wait until that time comes. It’s like, no. We can be good as a group right now.”</p><p><b>ClutchPoints:</b> So when you look at this team, Harrison, I know we talked about expectations. But, playoffs, post-season, things along those lines, especially for a franchise like this, that’s tasted so much success over their history. Is that something that you guys talk about? Is it mentioned in terms of goals for this year?</p><p><b>Barnes:</b> I think we have a high internal standard and goals for ourselves, but I think to make it concise, the only thing that is worth talking about is how we’re gonna show up every day as a group. I think we have the talent, we have all the pieces, We have that part. That part’s established. But it’s how are we gonna show up every single day? And I think as long as we keep that as our focus and our North Star, I think the rest of the things will play out for us. I think at times last season, not saying that there wasn’t intentionality behind that, but, I think our focus was shifted. Sorry,” the team’s staffer interrupted.</p><p>It followed a question that comes in the midst of reports that Durant wants to be in San Antonio.</p><p>“How does it feel to be involved in trade talk…”</p><p>Multiple reports have indicated the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/why-spurs-trading-for-kevin-durant-makes-more-sense-than-giannis-antetokounmpo">Spurs are willing to offer several players</a>, including Barnes, and their 14th pick in this month’s NBA Draft for Durant. Those same reports, along with speculation, suggest the Phoenix Suns are looking for more.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes faces trade question</h2><p>On behalf of the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Community Fund, the veteran forward helped <a href="https://x.com/austin_spurs/status/1935471354377032045" rel="noopener">unveil a newly renovated basketball court</a> at a Boys &amp; Girls Clubs location in the state’s capital city. Austin is approximately an hour away from San Antonio by car.</p><p>When Spurs players do such events, usually in the Alamo City, it’s common for them to take basketball-related questions as well. But in the rare cases that the player’s name is involved in contexts the franchise would rather avoid, the Spurs media staff has limited related questions.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/sources-spurs-ominously-go-quiet-kevin-durant-trade-speculation">Spurs have been linked to Durant</a> for several weeks now. Because San Antonio is reportedly his preferred landing spot, the organization isn’t throwing the kitchen sink at the Suns in a trade proposal. Truth be told, they wouldn’t even if KD hadn’t reportedly stated he wants to play in the Alamo City.</p><p>The future Hall-of-Famer will be 37 years old when next season starts. The Silver and Black <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-perfect-outcome-for-no-2-pick-in-2025-nba-draft">don’t have the intention of trading the second overall pick in the draft</a> and, thus, the chance to add Dylan Harper, nor do they want to part with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/how-stephon-castle-proves-belongs-spurs-elite-group">Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle</a>.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes and Kevin Durant history</h2><p>At 33 years old and, admittedly, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-blunt-luxury-take-place-among-young-core">probably not part of the Spurs young core</a>, rumblings indicate Barnes is a piece the Spurs are willing to part with in exchange for Durant.</p><p>It wouldn’t mark the first time Barnes would be replaced by KD. Performing a dunk from that range just improves his expanding reputation. The video even drew comparisons to the classic movie Space Jam, especially the well-known scene when Michael Jordan stretched across the court for that game-winning shot.</p><p>The video went viral quickly as Spurs fans chuckled and cheered. Pointing out that this dunk suggests his underused talent, many admired his agility and strength. Barnes’ two appearances in the NBA Finals, including a ring with the Golden State Warriors, and his role with a Sacramento Kings franchise that broke a long playoff drought <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-harrison-barnes-challenges-commitment-big-summer">define him as a veteran who’s had a positive impact</a>.</p><p>He certainly had an effect on a San Antonio squad whose oldest returning player from the season before is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-keldon-johnson-continues-downplaying-speculation">still just 25 years old</a>. It’s a reality not lost on Barnes.</p><p>“I think once you hit 30, you’re probably out of the core. I definitely just give my all to just continuing to prep, knowing that you can’t play forever.”</p><p>However it’s defined, Barnes makes no bones about how he sees these Spurs.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes searches for a niche with the Spurs</h2><p>Victor Wembanyama is just 21 years old. Stephon Castle is 20. They have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-mitch-johnson-hints-at-san-antonios-plans-with-lottery-picks">two lottery picks this summer</a>. While Barnes’ play helped the Spurs to 12 more wins from the season before, his professionalism and effort – he played in all 82 games – may have delivered more of an impact.</p><p>“The way I look at it, and Chris and I have talked about it a lot, it’s how do you continue to play the game, but also give back to next generation,” Barnes continued. “I think when you’re younger, you’re always worried about what the core looks like or what my potential is or whatever, but when you get older, you realize you’re on the back nine. You don’t know how many seasons you have left, you don’t know how many opportunities you have left to to go out there and do this.”</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvGmj7yz18Y" rel="noopener">Barnes shot a career-best 51% from the field</a> this season, including a personal high 43% from 3-point range, in averaging nearly 12-and-a-half points per game. Still, he’s not consumed with what lies ahead.</p><p>“For me, it’s always a matter of just giving the most effort that I can, whether that’s to young guys, whether that’s with my play, whatever it is,” Barnes said. “So unfortunately, I don’t have the luxury of of wondering if I’m still a part of a core or not.”</p><p>Barnes is under contract for another year. Reports about the Spurs’ interest in high-profile stars this summer may affect that. Either way, a man who has a ring and has been a part of six postseason appearances, including a Play-in, has high praise for the youth San Antonio has assembled.</p><p>“The future is bright. This young group has is one of the more talented groups that I’ve been a part of, and I’ve been a part of some pretty good teams,” Barnes said. “Now, hopefully, I’m not retired by the time all this talent has been realized, but the future’s very bright for Spurs fans, so they should be excited.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Kind of. Through 13 NBA seasons, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-reveals-habits-san-antonio-must-possess-make-playoffs">he’s won a championship with the Golden State Warriors</a> in reaching the two NBA Finals and he helped the Sacramento Kings break a 16-year playoff drought. Though San Antonio hasn’t yet enjoyed that level of success, the makings are there.</p><p>“The biggest thing for a team that wants to make a jump is the commitment level.”</p><p>“How much do guys want to be a part of what they’re going to be watching here in these next couple of months,” Barnes continued, alluding to the playoffs.</p><p>The former North Carolina star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-vocal-waiving-no-trade-clause-to-join-san-antonio">joined the Spurs last summer</a>. In playing <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvGmj7yz18Y" rel="noopener">all 82 games for a third straight season</a>, Barnes supplied the professionalism and temperament that’s defined his reputation. It’s a mindset that continued right into the final day of the season when he associated his team with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/harrison-barnes-hopes-playoffs-irritate-spurs-teammates">future playoff appearances.</a></p><p>“What are you going to do in the off-season and your preparation to get that point, to put yourself in position to be at that point. A lot of people just assume that come October, ‘I’m going to be ready to go,’ but this is where the growth happens. October is simply where it’s acknowledged. For us, this summer is a big summer to just continue to get better on and off the court.”</p><h2><b>Harrison Barnes details Spurs’ path to improvement</b></h2><p>Under contract through next season, Barnes turns 33 years old in late May. One of just two rotational players on the Spurs older than 30 (Chris Paul is the other), the Aimes, Iowa native outlined what <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-difficult-admission-san-antonio-reality">will prove key for his squad going forward</a>.</p><p>“I think it’s just establishing our standard. I think it’s how we show up every single night. Obviously, there’s lapses during the game, but I think there’s a standard to uphold in terms of just consistently how we play.”</p><p>The Spurs had a 12 game improvement from the year before. Yet, Barnes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-doesnt-hold-back-hurting-san-antonio">sees room for much more growth</a>.</p><p>“I think when we look back at this season, we can look at games and we can say, ‘Okay during this specific game or during this stretch of games we didn’t play at the level that we should’ve.’ Whether that’s in terms of our preparation, our execution of the game plan, our attention to detail. Whatever it is. And I think next year, the goal for us is to say, ‘Hey, we can look back at 82 games and say we played X amount of games at our standard.’ This puts us in the best position possible to make the playoffs.”</p><p>A stint with the Dallas Mavericks fell in between Barnes’ time with the Warriors and Kings, meaning you can add a brief stint with Luka Doncic to his time at the beginning of Golden State’s run with Stephen Curry and the Kings of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. He puts these Spurs alongside.</p><p>“The future is bright.
