Those same reports, along with speculation, suggest the Phoenix Suns are looking for more.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes faces trade question</h2><p>On behalf of the Harrison and Brittany Barnes Community Fund, the veteran forward helped <a href="https://x.com/austin_spurs/status/1935471354377032045" rel="noopener">unveil a newly renovated basketball court</a> at a Boys &amp; Girls Clubs location in the state’s capital city. Austin is approximately an hour away from San Antonio by car.</p><p>When Spurs players do such events, usually in the Alamo City, it’s common for them to take basketball-related questions as well. But in the rare cases that the player’s name is involved in contexts the franchise would rather avoid, the Spurs media staff has limited related questions.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/sources-spurs-ominously-go-quiet-kevin-durant-trade-speculation">Spurs have been linked to Durant</a> for several weeks now. Barnes’ two appearances in the NBA Finals, including a ring with the Golden State Warriors, and his role with a Sacramento Kings franchise that broke a long playoff drought <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-harrison-barnes-challenges-commitment-big-summer">define him as a veteran who’s had a positive impact</a>.</p><p>He certainly had an effect on a San Antonio squad whose oldest returning player from the season before is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-keldon-johnson-continues-downplaying-speculation">still just 25 years old</a>. It’s a reality not lost on Barnes.</p><p>“I think once you hit 30, you’re probably out of the core. I definitely just give my all to just continuing to prep, knowing that you can’t play forever.”</p><p>However it’s defined, Barnes makes no bones about how he sees these Spurs.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes searches for a niche with the Spurs</h2><p>Victor Wembanyama is just 21 years old. Stephon Castle is 20. They have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-mitch-johnson-hints-at-san-antonios-plans-with-lottery-picks">two lottery picks this summer</a>. While Barnes’ play helped the Spurs to 12 more wins from the season before, his professionalism and effort – he played in all 82 games – may have delivered more of an impact.</p><p>“The way I look at it, and Chris and I have talked about it a lot, it’s how do you continue to play the game, but also give back to next generation,” Barnes continued. “I think when you’re younger, you’re always worried about what the core looks like or what my potential is or whatever, but when you get older, you realize you’re on the back nine. You don’t know how many seasons you have left, you don’t know how many opportunities you have left to to go out there and do this.”</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvGmj7yz18Y" rel="noopener">Barnes shot a career-best 51% from the field</a> this season, including a personal high 43% from 3-point range, in averaging nearly 12-and-a-half points per game. Kind of. Through 13 NBA seasons, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-reveals-habits-san-antonio-must-possess-make-playoffs">he’s won a championship with the Golden State Warriors</a> in reaching the two NBA Finals and he helped the Sacramento Kings break a 16-year playoff drought. Though San Antonio hasn’t yet enjoyed that level of success, the makings are there.</p><p>“The biggest thing for a team that wants to make a jump is the commitment level.”</p><p>“How much do guys want to be a part of what they’re going to be watching here in these next couple of months,” Barnes continued, alluding to the playoffs.</p><p>The former North Carolina star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-vocal-waiving-no-trade-clause-to-join-san-antonio">joined the Spurs last summer</a>. In playing <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EvGmj7yz18Y" rel="noopener">all 82 games for a third straight season</a>, Barnes supplied the professionalism and temperament that’s defined his reputation. It’s a mindset that continued right into the final day of the season when he associated his team with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/harrison-barnes-hopes-playoffs-irritate-spurs-teammates">future playoff appearances.</a></p><p>“What are you going to do in the off-season and your preparation to get that point, to put yourself in position to be at that point. A lot of people just assume that come October, ‘I’m going to be ready to go,’ but this is where the growth happens. October is simply where it’s acknowledged. For us, this summer is a big summer to just continue to get better on and off the court.”</p><h2><b>Harrison Barnes details Spurs’ path to improvement</b></h2><p>Under contract through next season, Barnes turns 33 years old in late May. One of just two rotational players on the Spurs older than 30 (Chris Paul is the other), the Aimes, Iowa native outlined what <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-difficult-admission-san-antonio-reality">will prove key for his squad going forward</a>.</p><p>“I think it’s just establishing our standard. I think it’s how we show up every single night. Obviously, there’s lapses during the game, but I think there’s a standard to uphold in terms of just consistently how we play.”</p><p>The Spurs had a 12 game improvement from the year before. Yet, Barnes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-doesnt-hold-back-hurting-san-antonio">sees room for much more growth</a>.</p><p>“I think when we look back at this season, we can look at games and we can say, ‘Okay during this specific game or during this stretch of games we didn’t play at the level that we should’ve.’ Whether that’s in terms of our preparation, our execution of the game plan, our attention to detail. Whatever it is. And I think next year, the goal for us is to say, ‘Hey, we can look back at 82 games and say we played X amount of games at our standard.’ This puts us in the best position possible to make the playoffs.”</p><p>A stint with the Dallas Mavericks fell in between Barnes’ time with the Warriors and Kings, meaning you can add a brief stint with Luka Doncic to his time at the beginning of Golden State’s run with Stephen Curry and the Kings of De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis. He puts these Spurs alongside.</p><p>“The future is bright. I hope for some of them you have to almost drag them in front of the TV to watch because they’re so upset that they don’t want to watch postseason basketball,” the 32-year-old forward proclaimed.</p><p>“Those are the type of things that you hope that guys feel when they watch that and they say, ‘Look I want to be a part of that moving forward.”</p><p>A Spurs franchise that tied the league record in 2019 by reaching the playoffs for the 19th straight season hasn’t been back since. With <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/why-spurs-victor-wembanyama-next-face-nba-despite-lebron-weird-energy-claim">generational talent Victor Wembanyama</a> in place, it seems like only a matter of time before they return. With the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-trade-grade-deaaron-fox-blockbuster">additions of De’Aaron Fox</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-stephon-castle-believes-rookie-year-locked-up">Stephon Castle</a>, Barnes believes sour feelings about missing out are warranted.</p><h2><b>Harrison Barnes doing his part to help the Spurs return to the NBA Playoffs</b></h2><p>It’s fair to say that Barnes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/harrison-barnes-deserves-spurs-game-winning-shot-warriors">exceeded any Spurs expectations</a> during his first year with the team. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-harrison-barnes-vocal-waiving-no-trade-clause-to-join-san-antonio">Acquired in a three-team trade from the Sacramento Kings</a> after they’d agreed to terms with Chris Paul and drafted Castle, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2012 NBA draft not only produced while providing the experience and type of professionalism the team didn’t have the year before, but he also didn’t miss a single game.</p><p>“It’s one of the things I’m most proud of, honestly, just because I’ve always prided myself on just trying to be available for my teammates,” the North Carolina alum revealed.</p><p>“I think if you play this game long enough you’re in some of those pregame meetings or pregame huddles where you look right and you look left and sometimes you don’t see your guys there and it can be tough,” Barnes continued. “But the thing I always say is whether win or lose or whatever, I want to try to just be out there for my guys, be out there for my teammates, my coaches and just try to put my best foot forward.”</p><p>It actually marked the third straight season and fourth overall in his career in which Barnes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-chris-paul-nba-history-nears-40th-birthday">played all 82 games</a>. He also played 81 contests in his rookie season with the Golden State Warriors.</p><p>It’s that experience in Oakland, California that helped set the foundation for what’s been a 13-year NBA career for Barnes. His four seasons with the Dubs saw two trips to the Finals, including a championship in 2015 and the greatest record in league history the following year. They added Chris Paul in very early July. So, when they traded for Harrison Barnes <a href="http://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/how-spurs-won-3-team-trade-kings-bulls">several days later,</a> it seemed a little anticlimactic. Castle was considered by many the most pro-ready prospect, and possibly the best player, period, in last summer’s draft. Paul is one of the best to ever play point guard and, even at 39 years old, still represented an immediate upgrade at a spot sorely lacking in Victor Wembanyama’s rookie season. It’s tough for anyone to follow those two acquisitions.</p><p>In a way, though, Barnes hasn’t followed anyone in forging his own value for the 2024-2025 Spurs.</p><p>The former Sacramento King will play in every one of San Antonio’s 82 games this season. And while fellow veteran Chris Paul and Julian Champagnie will do the same, it’ll mark the third straight year Barnes has done it and fourth overall. This is his 13th season in the NBA.</p><h2><b>Harrison Barnes among most valuable Spurs</b></h2><p>Because Castle has played his way to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-stephon-castle-believes-rookie-year-locked-up">favorite status for Rookie of the Year</a> and because Paul has continued to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-chris-paul-supplants-jason-kidd-no-2-all-time-steals-leader">climb all-time NBA stats lists</a>, Barnes has formed his own way to stand out. When given more than 20 minutes per game, the former North Carolina Tar Heel has proven as consistent as just about any Spur. While every player goes through rough stretches, those patches have seemed mild for Barnes. Only twice in the last two months as he not hit double figures in points when he has played at least 20 minutes in a game.</p><p>All that said, statistics aren’t the biggest value the 32-year-old forward brings, especially not for a young team. As the Spurs continue to try to mold youth around Wembanyama, Barnes entered as an example of professionalism. Not a star, it doesn’t matter to Barnes how often he gets the ball or how much focus is placed upon him. It’s a real-time example of what’s needed for a team made up of youngsters trying to find their way, not only as players but also as building blocks around Wemby.</p><h2><b>Barnes enjoys clutch moment vs. Warriors</b></h2><p>Though the Spurs were his fourth franchise within a 12-year span, it’s not quite accurate to call Barnes a journeyman. I feel like offensively we did a great job,” Spurs forward Keldon Johnson said <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtLlu7LTnCE">after the setback</a> to the Mavericks. “We scored the ball enough to win an NBA game, but defensively, we’ve got to lock in altogether. Deep into positions, we’ve got to get those stops.”</p><p>“I think the biggest time is any time you score and you feel like you’re in a good rhythm, you look up, and we put up 60 plus points in the first half, but they also scored 60,” Barnes added. “You get into a game of just trading baskets. Unfortunately, that wasn’t sustainable for us, especially down the stretch. Defensively, we have to be better and be mindful when it’s going back and forth like that.”</p><p>San Antonio is giving up 116 points per game. Only one team in the top eight of either conference is giving up an excess of 116 per contest. In the West, the only two squads that give up more than 116 are the only two below the Spurs in the standings.</p><p>“Defensively, initially, we showed great presence on defense, but as they moved the ball, I feel like we were a step behind. There’s definitely things that we can control to fix those things,” Johnson said of the loss to Dallas.</p><p>Making matters worse are injuries to key Spurs defenders. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/spurs-news-victor-wembanyamas-2-word-text-to-teammates">Victor Wembanyama is out for the season</a>. Jeremy Sochan is dealing with a left calf issue. It’s caused their teammates to work that much harder.</p><p>“The off-ball screens, the on-ball screens, where we’re at, just being connected defensively, I think that’s where it starts,” Barnes continued. “The rebounding, the shot-blocking, things like that. Those things can come or go, but if you don’t have the communication piece first and foremost, that’s what’s going to lead to success or failure. To some it may seem like a forgone conclusion that neither will qualify, but to hear Spurs veteran Harrison Barnes is to understand the context.</p><p>“It’s difficult. Of his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/how-spurs-win-over-grizzlies-ensured-rodeo-road-trip-wasnt-all-bad">squad’s last 16 games</a>, only two have taken place in San Antonio.</p><p>“We just have to be ready to go to work and continue to find moments to participate in our own survival and not have self-inflected mistakes when we’re playing good teams,” Johnson continued. “It’s tough enough when you give them extra possessions or miscues and now they get an easy shot versus making them work for the tough stuff. They’re without the player they received in the widely panned Doncic trade. The organization has not given a timetable on when star forward Anthony Davis may return from a left adductor strain. Like the Spurs, the Mavs played the night before the first of their two meetings in the Frost Bank Center. Now, the Spurs will be one of the first teams to take part in a Los Angeles sporting event since the wildfires started, and Harrison Barnes has delivered a message.</p><p>“It’s obviously a tough situation,” Barnes said while speaking of the tragic events in Los Angeles. “Prayers for all the people affected in this L.A. area with the fires.”</p><p>The Silver and Black have been in the “City of Angels” since Thursday, so they have seen the devastation caused by these wildfires. San Antonio has not played since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-blunt-message-ugly-loss">falling 121-105 in Milwaukee on Wednesday</a>.</p><p>Upon arriving in Los Angeles for the first game of a scheduled back-to-back scenario vs. the Lakers, the Spurs had to change the hotel in which they were staying in order to create a greater distance from the wildfires. Due to there being no game on Saturday, the Spurs instead focused on practicing more and fine-tuning their craft. In the aftermath of this workout, Barnes acknowledged their metaphoric umbrella.</p><p>“A lot of people lost homes, have been displaced, have been affected by it,” Barnes said. “We want to see the community come back together.”</p><p>At the time, the Spurs spokesman said it was a “fluid situation” for the team in Los Angeles and that a decision had not been made regarding their game against the Lakers that was scheduled for Monday, Jan. 13. There was still no word on this game after the Spurs wrapped up another practice on Sunday.</p><p>Throughout the weekend, acting head coach Mitch Johnson, who has stepped up for Gregg Popovich as the legendary coach continues to recover from his stroke, praised the team for their perspective during this time of uncertainty.</p><p>“They’ve been very understanding,” Johnson stated. “We pale in comparison to what’s really going on out here.”</p><p>The Spurs received word on Sunday afternoon that the NBA would follow through with the schedule as is. This will be San Antonio’s first game since Wednesday’s loss in Milwaukee.</p><p>After a stretch in which the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-disagree-big-takeaway-weekend-series-nuggets">Spurs had nearly defeated some of the league’s top teams</a> and pulled off some impressive wins, this setback against the Bucks stung because it marked San Antonio’s first lackluster performance in several weeks.</p><p>In that way, getting back on the court could prove therapeutic for the Spurs.</p><p>“It’s a blessing. Sports is one of those things where we’re able to get away, we’re able to unwind,” Barnes continued. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to play this game or a game at some point in time. We’re extremely blessed and privileged to be in this situation.”</p><p>Fans in Los Angeles will have a couple of options as they get their taste of sports in the city since the fires.</p><p>The Los Angeles Clippers also had a game against the Hornets moved to a future date. The steady forward often described as a “true pro” <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/barneha02.html" rel="noopener">averaged 22.3 points</a> and 8.7 rebounds while shooting .618 (21-34) from the field and .600 (9-15) from three-point land.</p><p>Coming into the season, Barnes averaged 14 points per contest through twelve seasons in the league. But over the last seven days, he posted three straight games with 20 or more points and recorded his first double-double since April 3, 2022, finishing with 25 points and 10 rebounds in a season-high 36 minutes vs. Utah on November 21. In 100 minutes of play across the three games, Barnes didn’t turn the ball over.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/victor-wembanyama-injury-return-sparks-insane-fourth-quarter-surge-stephen-curry-warriors">His 22 points against a Warriors</a> franchise with whom he entered the NBA and won a title, came with Victor Wembanyama back in the line-up after a three-game absence.</p><p>“We talked about Victor’s passing, being able to cut and move off him. He draws so much attention, [teammates] get open shots. C.P. [Chris Paul], Steph [Stephon Castle]; those guys in a pick and roll – drawing to, probing, making the right reads. For me, it’s just a matter of being active and taking the shots if they come to you,” Barnes told Clutchpoints.</p><p>In his first 14 games of the season, Barnes averaged 9.2 points and 3.9 rebounds per game.</p><p>“I think it’s mostly just reading and reacting off the guys who are out there,” Barnes responded to ClutchPoints’ question about how he navigates looking for offense within the Spurs sets, especially with Wemby back.</p><p>“Sometimes you get more shots than others, but I think the biggest thing is just being active, moving,” he continued.</p><p>Now in his 13th NBA season, Barnes set an NBA record for the latest into a career for a player to win a Player of the Week award for the first time, passing Mike Conley and Jrue Holiday who both accomplished the feat in their 12th NBA seasons. He’s the first Spur to earn Player of the Week honors since DeMar DeRozan in 2020.</p><p>Acting head coach Mitch Johnson admits that while the organization thought he’d play well this season, he’s not quite comfortable talking expectation regarding to one of his starting forwards.</p><p>“He’s been extremely efficient. Veteran forward Harrison Barnes, acquired this summer via trade, hasn’t played many games for the winningest coach in NBA history. That doesn’t mean the magnitude of not having one of the greatest of all-time escapes him.</p><p>“I think that the best way that we can honor him is to go out there and just compete as hard as we can and execute and win,” Barnes said.</p><p>Popovich won five NBA championships while his Tim Duncan-led Spurs became fixtures at or near the top of the league over three decades. The 32-year-old Barnes played under “Pop” for Team USA during the 2019 FIBA World Cup. The 75-year-old coach’s current absence started after the fifth game this season.</p><p>“Pop is, there’s nobody who can fill that void,” Barnes said. “What he brings, what he’s brought, what he’s established, I think everyone – coaches, players, staff – everyone is doing their part to make sure that we’re making him proud every single night.”</p><h2><b>Spurs leaning on new leadership amid Gregg Popovich absence</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Harrison-Barnes.jpg"><figcaption>Kelley L Cox-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The night the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-news-gregg-popovich-return-timeline-unclear-mild-stroke">Spurs lost Popovich for the foreseeable future</a> because of a mild stroke, they eventually improved to 3-3. Ten games later, they’re still at .500. Mediocre by most standards, the Spurs won just 22 of their 82 games last season. Mitch Johnson <a href="https://x.com/HectorLedesmaTV/status/1859823906950889487" rel="noopener">is serving as the franchise’s acting head coach</a>.</p><p>“I think you always want to build upon previous games,” Johnson said. “Hopefully, you take away something even from the losses but I definitely think we’ve showed ourselves a little bit and now can hold ourselves accountable to some of the good stuff that we’ve show the last two games for sure.”</p><p>Wins vs. the Oklahoma City Thunder and Utah Jazz have been especially impressive considering San Antonio was missing Victor Wembanyama, Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan in each. Though, the Spurs needed a big second half to avoid a loss to now 3-12 Utah.</p><p>“I didn’t think we came out with good energy. I didn’t like our reactions to some of the things that happened in the first half, the body language, confidence – or lack thereof. It felt like we were indecisive. Give Utah credit for that. Obviously, they’re well coached and they came out playing with a lot of pace,” Johnson said, sounding a lot like Popovich.</p><p>“I didn’t like how we reacted to some mistakes and it felt like we had some better moments than it probably felt like. It felt like we poked ourselves in the eye a couple of times. We’d get a turnover and dribble off our foot or we’d miss a lay-up and they’d come down and get a bucket off that.”</p><p>Thursday night vs. the Jazz represented the kind of game the Spurs would’ve lost in the last couple of years.</p><p>“I thought we did a good job of regrouping in the second half and keeping it together.”</p><p>It appears missing Popovich isn’t the only difference so far for the 2024-2025 Spurs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Newly a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/how-spurs-won-3-team-trade-kings-bulls">cquired veteran Harrison Barnes</a> outlined what it’ll take for one of the youngest teams in the league to reach the second season.</p><p>“It starts with the habits,” Barnes answered when asked by ClutchPoints how he manages expectations considering the Spurs’ reality.</p><p>“When it comes to game time, it’s just executing the little things, not letting two minutes, four minutes go here or there, helping young guys understand that any game can create momentum, positive or negative, in a season,” the 13th year forward continued.</p><h2>Harrison Barnes candid on playoff talk</h2><p>ClutchPoints asked the five-time playoff participant, who was a member of the 2015 champion Golden State Warriors, about postseason possibilities for an organization that hasn’t been there since 2019.</p><p>Barnes actually experienced something similar recently.</p><p>“For a long time in Sacramento, we were trying to end the playoff drought there, but it just starts with building good habits – in training camp, in practices,” Barnes, who joined the Kings the same season as the last time the Spurs qualified for the playoffs, responded.</p><p>“One game that you should’ve lost that you won may lead to a four-game win streak, which may change the season,” Barnes added.</p><p>“Last season, talking to guys, some of the losing streaks were extremely difficult and it kind of took the air out of the season. I think it’s just staying locked in and sustaining the focus to do the little things.”</p><p>San Antonio suffered a team-record 18-game losing streak that started in the fall of 2023.</p><h2>Barnes sees advantages to Spurs youth</h2><p>Outside of Barnes and fellow off-season addition Chris Paul, Zach Collins ranks as the oldest Spur. He’s 26 years old. It speaks to the youth of a rotation <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/spurs-victor-wembanyama-shifts-learning-expectations-to-winning-entering-2024-25-season">led by 20-year-old Victor Wembanyama</a>.</p><p>“The beauty of it is the energy level. Being youthful and having energy, that’s going to keep you in a lot of games but I think the message that’s going to be preached a lot this season is going to be sustaining. Can we sustain our focus? Can we sustain the level of detail necessary, not only in the second quarter but also in the third and fourth.
