Although the former Knicks first-round draft pick <a href="https://x.com/FirstTake/status/1841507836372660591" rel="noopener">expressed concern over</a> how the Towns/Jalen Brunson pairing will work in crunch time during a recent appearance on First Take, he believes the Knicks are better off following their acquisition of the four-time All-Star.</p><p>“I think him and [Julius] Randle together would have been nasty, but I totally get that’s the only way you can do the trade,” Shumpert said while speaking on behalf of his new ESPN+ series, Taking One For The Team, which debuts on Oct. 16. “I think KAT fits really well with that team. I think he fits well with the personalities, the willingness to share. I think with Brunson, there’s something about that that I really like. I don’t know why I like it yet. With these Knicks, you can’t speak too early.</p><p>“We have to make sure we add the right coaching plays and then the coaches stay put, we got a lot of stuff going on in New York. But I’m very excited about this pick and roll coming with those two just because KAT understands spacing and he’s able to stretch the floor as such a big target for Brunson,” Shumpert continued. “He’s got good hands and he can finish giving Brunson that in a scaled-down version because Julius was a little more than a triple-threat player than a smooth combination of a pick-and-roll that we’re used to.”</p><p>Brunson and Randle did well as a pairing together over the past two seasons, helping lead the team to back-to-back semifinals appearances after the team missed the playoffs in eight of the nine prior seasons. However, it became clear that Randle’s crash-to-the-hoop style wasn’t the best fit for Brunson’s playmaking style. Shumpert argues that Towns’ game is a better fit for Brunson than Randle was.</p><p>“Julius breaks it off a little bit more to go downhill,” explains Shumpert. “And I think that KAT and Brunson will have better chemistry in that world — they’ll be more Stockton and Malone than the pick-and-pop and somebody drive it.”</p><p>“They had the pick and roll Melo syndrome, where it’s like Melo from 18 feet. My boy needs nine seconds, we going downhill,” Shumpert continued. “That’s how Julius goes. I think that Brunson gives KAT the ability to get downhill off of somebody having to play catch up and KAT doesn’t get that too often. Towns has shot 52.4% from the field, 39.8% from beyond the arc and 83.9% from the charity stripe over his career. By comparison, Randle has shot 47.0% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 74.8% from the free-throw line.</p><p>“I think with who they have playing the perimeter, I think as long as they got somebody that can knock down shots, that KAT has available, he can also make that pass,” Shumpert said. “He can make that rotational pass, he can make that hook pass in the strongside corner, he’s able to do that by going downhill I’m excited to see that pick and roll. I don’t want to speak too early and jinx them. Shumpert was teammates with James <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-david-griffin-reminisces-powerful-moment-cleveland-won-2016-championship">when the Cleveland Cavaliers won a championship</a> during the 2015-16 season — a win that occurred over the Curry-led Golden State Warriors.</p><p>James and Curry have long been rivals, matching up against each other in the NBA Finals during four consecutive seasons (2015 through 2018), with the Curry-led Warriors winning three of those and the James-led Cleveland Cavaliers winning once. James and Curry have also matched up in the 2021 play-in tournament and during the 2023 Western Conference semifinals, with James’ Los Angeles Lakers winning both of those matchups.</p><p>The longtime rivals recently teamed up for the first time together at the Olympics, with both emerging as the leading stars of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/stephen-curry-olympics-takeaways-after-leading-team-usa-to-gold-medal">Team USA’s latest gold medal victory</a> despite being the oldest players on the roster with James at 39 years old and Curry at 36 years of age. The duo’s chemistry together gave hope that both veterans could team up one day on an NBA team before they wrap up their careers.</p><p>However, Shumpert — who was teammates with James from 2015 through 2018 — explains why that should never happen.</p><p>“They better not,” said Shumpert when asked about the prospect of both stars teaming up in a one-on-one interview on behalf of his new show, Taking One For The Team. “I’m making the announcement to them — ya’ll better not. On Team USA, we loved it, laughed it up. Don’t do that. It’s not cool. I want ya’ll to be arch-enemies. That’s just what it is.”</p><p>The 34-year-old former shooting guard explains that he didn’t like it when Kevin Durant teamed up with Curry to lead the Warriors to two NBA championships in 2017 and 2018 — and he wouldn’t support it if James and Curry did the same.</p><p>“KD already ruined it and he went over there with Steph so they couldn’t be arch enemies,” says Shumpert. “That hurt everybody’s heart. ‘Bron, don’t do that. Don’t hurt us all. We’re all going to cry and then we’re going to watch it and then when we watch it. We might enjoy it, I will enjoy the hell out of it, that one-three pick and roll. I’m going to enjoy that a lot. But don’t do that. James is coming off of a <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html" rel="noopener">25.7 point-per-game season</a> with a career-high efficiency of 41.0 percent from beyond the arc while appearing in 71 games — his highest since the 2017-18 season. Meanwhile, Curry is coming off of a season in which he averaged 26.4 points per game with 357 treys, leading the NBA in 3-point field goals for the eighth time.</p><p>However, neither James’ Lakers nor Curry’s Warriors appear anywhere close to contending for a championship. The Lakers were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs last year while the Warriors failed to qualify for the postseason.</p><p>While James and Curry face the prospect of ending their careers with four rings apiece and not much of a chance for a fifth ring, Shumpert is still against the idea of the two stars teaming up.</p><p>“That’s cheating,” says Shumpert. “It’s literally cheating. One-three pick-and-roll with LeBron and Steph. Good luck. Good luck, guys. Please God, don’t do that. That’s cheating.”</p><p>Stephen Curry is currently under contract through the 2026-27 season while LeBron James holds a player option for the 2025-26 season. While the move was met with a lot of criticism due to Redick possessing zero coaching experience and because of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-reveals-why-he-started-podcast-with-jj-redick">his close friendship with LeBron James</a>, Shumpert — who matched up against Redick multiple times during his playing career from 2012 through 2021 — explains why it made sense for the Lakers to hire the 39-year-old former NBA shooting guard.</p><p>“I think it’s very easy to gain the trust of the team knowing that he’s been through it,” says Shumpert in a one-on-one interview on behalf of his new show, Taking One For The Team, which will debut on ESPN+ and Hulu on Oct. 16. “He runs through a wall, he’s in your face. He doesn’t back down and he gets to work and he does his job. I think knowing all that, the integrity of a coach is so meaningful in the NBA and then he gets an opportunity,</p><p>“I know there’s been controversy and everything, I like JJ. There’s certain people that I’m not about to do the whole get into the argument and barbershop talk. I played against the man, I’ve heard the man speak. I’m really excited to see what he does with a basketball club.”</p><p>Redick made his name across 15 years in the NBA, mostly serving as a sharp-shooting role player for a number of contending teams, including the Orlando Magic at the start of his career and the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers towards the end of his playing tenure. Redick once <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/r/redicjj01.html" rel="noopener">averaged 18.1 points per game</a> during the 2018-19 season and led the NBA with a 47.5% three-point shooting efficiency during the 2015-16 season.</p><p>“I think JJ Redick has an incredible basketball mind,” says Shumpert. “I always loved watching his analytics work. So knowing that and knowing that combined with how he was as a player, people don’t know, but JJ is pretty tough as a player.”</p><p>Shumpert describes what it was like matching up against Redick during their playing careers,</p><p>“He’s pretty in your face, he’s chippy,” says Shumpert of Redick. “He’s not a regular shooter and he’s just going to be quiet. He’s actually an asshole when he plays ball. But when you know that and you’ve seen somebody’s body of work and then you see how fair they are, how professional they are on that TV, I think it is very easy for somebody to believe that.”</p><h2><b>Lakers are rolling the dice on JJ Redick as head coach</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/JJ-Redick.jpg"><figcaption>Jonathan Hui-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The idea of the Lakers hiring a head coach with no prior coaching experience isn’t unheard of. Multiple coaches such as Steve Kerr and Jason Kidd have gone on to have superb careers leading the sidelines of teams, with Kerr winning four championships and Kidd recently leading the Dallas Mavericks to an NBA Finals appearance.</p><p>However, there are also duds, such as when the Brooklyn Nets hired Steve Nash. Nash had a respectable 94-67 record, but the team never advanced past the semifinals despite featuring stars such as Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving. Nash was fired at the start of his third season. Shumpert acknowledges that the prospect of playing with his son — rather than winning another ring — is a lot more important for LeBron at this stage of his career.</p><p>It’s the reason why Shumpert believes James will end his career in Los Angeles, giving him another two or three years before he calls it a career.</p><p>“Yeah, that’s a dream,” says Shumpert. “That’s probably a dream that he didn’t dream, never thought he could do. But that is incredible, incredible to be able to pick and roll with your son. That’s a man. I don’t even have a son, I got to do pick and rolls with my daughter. He gets to do it with his son in the NBA. Siddiqi has bylines at Forbes, CBS Sports, Bleacher Report, and Heavy.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Iman Shumpert is a big fan of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-donovan-mitchell-reveals-when-he-knew-hed-stay-in-cleveland">Cleveland Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell</a> — but he believes there’s a ceiling with him as the lead man.</p><p>Shumpert — who is known for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-iman-shumpert-makes-pick-between-lebron-james-2020-lakers-2016-cavs">winning a championship</a> with the Cavs back in 2016 — explained that while Mitchell is one of the top players in the league, his undersized frame may limit his team’s chances once they get to the playoffs.</p><p>“Donovan Mitchell is one of those players,” says Shumpert in a one-on-one interview while speaking <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/djsiddiqi/2024/10/02/nba-champion-iman-shumpert-details-his-new-show-taking-one-for-the-team-and-his-transition-into-entertainment/" rel="noopener">on behalf of his new show, <i>Taking One For The Team</i></a>. “He’s just a special player, a special dynamic. I think he pulls a lot of big moments out, I just think he’s undersized and he might have to switch his approach in the playoffs. Because in the playoffs, everything is about matchups and everything is about what are we going to live and die with?”</p><p>The 34-year-old shooting guard — Iman Shumpert hasn’t played a game since 2021, <a href="https://rg.org/news/basketball/nba-champion-iman-shumpert-on-retirement-and-his-thoughts-on-lakers-drafting-bronny-james" rel="noopener">but says he’s open to playing again and is not retired</a> — discussed in further detail what he means by that.</p><p>“People don’t know it, but there’s a lot of times when the player think he’s getting off and think he’s playing the game of his life, and we’re really just leaving you open because our game plan is to not let this guy over here that really kills us at the end of every game — we’re going to let him be cold all game where he hasn’t shot a ball at all — and you keep scoring,” explained Shumpert.</p><p>The Cavaliers have emerged as a playoff team during each of Mitchell’s first two years with the club, and individually, he’s earned back-to-back All-Star berths along with an All-NBA selection at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. However, the Cavs have failed to advance past the Eastern Conference semifinals with Mitchell leading the way, which is very similar to how his tenure with the Utah Jazz went, as they never advanced past the semifinals with Mitchell and Rudy Gobert as their star duo.</p><p>Shumpert explains the strategy from opposing teams on how to limit a Mitchell-led team is by letting him score and icing out the other players.</p><p>“But we don’t care, because we’re not losing,” says Iman Shumpert when a team utilizes this strategy on Mitchell in the playoffs. “We’re just going back and forth like, ‘Ya’ll don’t play defense. Our literal game plan is to ice out, make this other player think he got it and then we’re going to trap him at the end of the game.'”</p><p>“That’s the playoffs. When Donovan realizes how to play a game within a game — because he’s just playing the purity of the game — he’s not playing a game within a game. He needs to understand that. I don’t want to drift off too hard, but at the end of the game, we shouldn’t be able to funnel you into this over here and I think that right now, he’s got to add something to his game and to keep people from doing that because he’s undersized.”</p><p>As a member of the Cavs, Mitchell is the No. 1 option with point guard Darius Garland as the No. 2 scoring option. Mitchell averaged 26.6 points per game while Garland averaged 18.0 points per game during the 2023-24 season.</p><p>While the Cavaliers’ type of personnel likely won’t allow Mitchell to play any other way, Shumpert suggests that if the 28-year-old guard were to play with a bigger guard — someone like Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks — it would mean more postseason success for Mitchell.</p><p>“He needs to go somewhere with a big point guard,” says Iman Shumpert. “There has to be a big point guard. If he had Luka, now he can deal with the defensive loss on height difference, but he can play the combo spot better than the official two-guard. I need him to back and forth, playing point and two and I need that big point guard to be predominantly the distributor, because Donovan is a quick pull if you give him space, he’s pulling. He doesn’t take disrespect well at all.”</p><p>“I think that people run into the mistake of not presenting them with somebody that could fill in the little holes. I’m just gonna play the two. But he doesn’t need to be guarding, he can jump, he can get blocks, he’s gonna do stuff like that. He doesn’t need to be guarding somebody that is gonna run his legs down and throw at him every possession. That’s pretty much every two-guard in the league and they’re gonna go at you every time they touch the ball. I think he has to deal with that a little bit too much. You need a point guard that’s bigger, that can hide that for him and take a little pressure off what me and Kyrie used to do (in Cleveland).”</p><p>Mitchell signed a three-year, $150 million contract extension in the offseason following persistent trade rumors. With Mitchell appearing to be locked into Cleveland for the foreseeable future, they likely have a ceiling unless they make a major move to bring in a big guard to take the pressure off Mitchell and cover up for his defensive deficiencies.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Still, even with all that money, he continued to be aggravated over the singer and songwriter’s success.</p><p>There were also texts from the basketball star to her that were condescending and used manipulative language. All of these were sent to her due to her being famous and getting attention, which led to fights with her for no apparent reason.</p><p>Also, Taylor turned down some recording opportunities due to Iman not wanting her to work. Shumpert reminisced his experience playing Green and the Warriors and emphasized the often overlooked impact of the veteran forward to the Dubs.</p><p>“I never felt like he was going to not know the coverages. … He was barking everything out that we’re doing. Somebody that pay attention to detail like that, watch film like that, <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPointsApp/status/1673132179247841280" rel="noopener">they’re very important</a>,” Shumpert explained during his appearance on the “No Chill” podcast, via ClutchPoints.</p><p>The former NBA playmaker added that he was actually surprised to see Draymond Green opt out of his player option with the Warriors. Along with guard J.R. Smith, Shumpert was traded to the Cavaliers <a href="https://www.nba.com/cavaliers/releases/cavs-trade-150105" rel="noopener">in a 2015 trade</a> that sent guard Dion Waiters to the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 6-foot-5-inch guard averaged 6.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per outing during the 182 games he played for Cleveland.</p><p>“We wish Dion the best as he continues his career with the Thunder and thank him for his effort and work here with the Cavaliers,” then-Cavs general manager David Griffin said in a 2015 release. “Dion is a talented player with potential ahead of him. Trades like this are always difficult to make because there are relationships and bonds built and that was the case with Dion.</p><p>“At the same time, we’re very excited to welcome Iman and J.R. to Cleveland.
