On Wednesday night preseason action against the Toronto Raptors, Mazzulla did not take too kindly to some showboating from guard Immanuel Quickley.</p><p>With less than four minutes remaining in the second quarter, RJ Barrett pushed the ball in transition against the Celtics and found a wide-open Quickley in the corner. The Raptors guard then pulled the trigger on a triple while standing in front of the Boston bench and drilled it after almost certainly hearing some jeers from the Celtics. The Celtics head coach must be thinking that the Raptors guard is out of his mind considering that it’s exhibition season and it’s silly to be taunting others when these games don’t count towards teams’ win-loss records quite yet.</p><p>Whatever the case may be, it’s Mazzulla and the Celtics that had the last laugh on Wednesday against the Raptors. Some of the Celtics’ starters played regular-season minutes (Derrick White played 35 and Payton Pritchard played 32), while two other starters also crossed the 30-minute mark for Toronto (Brandon Ingram and Quickley). In the end, it was the Celtics that pulled out a 110-108 victory, improving to 2-1 in the preseason.</p><p>Quickley finished with 14 points, four rebounds, and six assists, although he did shoot a dreadful 3-14 from the field. Xavier Tillman Sr. stole the show for Boston, nailing a game-winning floater with 0.8 left on the clock.</p><h2><b>Celtics look to survive without Jayson Tatum</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Tatum-at-preseason.jpg"><figcaption>Petre Thomas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-boston-remains-cautiously-optimistic-jayson-tatum-achilles-return-this-season">Jayson Tatum is making plenty of strides</a> in his recovery from a ruptured Achilles, but there are no indications that the Celtics want to bring him back this year.</p><p>With the Celtics in the middle of a gap year, there will be greater opportunity for the likes of White, Pritchard, and Jaylen Brown as they look to keep Boston afloat especially after they lost a few key contributors this past offseason.</p><p>White was excellent on Wednesday, scoring 33 on 10-23 shooting, while Pritchard, despite shooting a ghastly 1-11 from the field, did pitch in with 10 assists. As things stand, the Celtics look like a fringe playoff team in the East, although bigger breakouts from Pritchard or White could cement them as a lower-end playoff team.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As the young guard went airborne, he was caught up on Darius Garland’s back, resulting in a hard fall to the ground. After going to the locker room before halftime in clear discomfort, Quickley underwent further evaluation that resulted in the Raptors ruling him out with his pelvic contusion.</p><p>Prior to Quickley exiting the Raptors’ season opener against the Cavs, he had recorded 13 points, four assists, and two rebounds in 14 total minutes. He was 4-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Without Quickley on the court, Toronto will turn to newly acquired Davion Mitchell and rookie guard Jamal Shead in the backcourt.</p><p>In a total of 38 games last season with Toronto, Quickley averaged 18.6 points, 6.8 assists, and 4.8 rebounds per game while shooting 42.2 percent from the floor and 39.5 percent from three-point range. This led to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-immanuel-quickley-sign-175-million-contract">Raptors giving Quickley a five-year, $175 million contract</a> as a restricted free agent in free agency.</p><p>This is a concerning injury for the Raptors, especially since they are <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-rj-barrett-worrisome-injury-update-before-season">already without RJ Barrett to begin the season</a>. Barrett sustained a sprain to the right acromioclavicular joint in the preseason, resulting in him being unavailable for Wednesday’s season opener against Cleveland. No further updates have been given on Barrett’s status at this time.</p><p>Both Quickley and Barrett were acquired by Toronto during the 2023-24 season when they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-og-anunoby-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-knicks-raptors-trade">traded OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks</a>.</p><p>The Raptors have not found a whole lot of success since winning their first championship in 2019. This organization won just 25 games a season ago, their fewest since winning only 2023 games during the 2011-12 season.</p><p>Head coach Darko Rajakovic is building this team in his image, and executive <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-masai-ujiri-makes-rebuilding-admission-2024-25-season">Masai Ujiri has committed to the rebuild that this franchise faces</a>. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-masai-ujiri-makes-strong-promise-after-shameful-last-season">the Raptors believe</a> the structure of Quickley’s deal will make it age and look more reasonable down the line.</p><p>“The structure of the deal helps. Per a source, and as Raptors GM Bobby Webster confirmed to TSN on Monday, it’s a flat $175 million over five years – no options or annual raises,” Lewenberg wrote. “It will be worth 25 percent of the salary cap next season, but assuming the cap continues to rise as expected, Quickley’s cap hit will only be 17 percent by year five, when he’s 29 and the team figures to be more competitive and in need of the additional roster flexibility. That’s fair value for even an average starting point guard, and Toronto is certainly hoping that he can grow into more than that.”</p><p>It is right that Quickley’s contract extension <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/ex-clipper-paul-george-drops-bombshell-kawhi-leonard-raptors-team-up-revelation">with the Raptors</a> is flat over the five seasons, with the cap hit <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/70667/immanuel-quickley" rel="noopener">staying at $35 million</a> per season, according to Spotrac. As noted, the percentage of the cap that his contract will take up is just under 25 percent this season, then it dips down to an estimated 22.57 percent, then 20.51 percent, followed by 18.65 percent and 16.95 percent.</p><p>Quickley was arguably the best asset the Raptors got back in the trade that sent OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks. Now, he is solidified as a key piece for the team’s future, and if he continues to grow, this contract could look a lot better down the line.</p><p>It is a different structure from Scottie Barnes’ contract, who has ascending cap hits <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/_/id/74111/scottie-barnes" rel="noopener">from $38.6 million</a> this season to $51.03 million in the last year of the deal. There are also incentives to potentially get more money than is currently guaranteed for Scottie Barnes. RJ Barrett, who was acquired in the Anunoby deal and signed his deal with the Knicks, has ascending cap hits over the course of his contract as well, but if he performs the way he did after going to Toronto, his deal will not look too bad.</p><h2><b>Immanuel Quickley cemented as core piece for Raptors</b></h2><p>The centerpiece for the Raptors is Barnes, who made a big jump in year three and made the All-Star Game for the first time this past season. He was thrusted into a bigger role after Anunoby and Pascal Siakam were traded, with mixed results following. The hope is that more time playing with Quickley will help them achieve their goals.</p><p>Barnes had a season-ending injury, while Quickley took a personal leave, and the two only played 25 games together. Those two developing chemistry, along with RJ Barrett as well, is vital to the future of the Raptors, who are headed in a new direction with younger players following trading Anunoby and Siakam last season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

On Friday night, reports came out that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-immanuel-quickley-sign-175-million-contract">Raptors have inked</a> another crucial member of their young core, Immanuel Quickley, to a huge extension, paying him $175 million over five years.</p><p>Quickley is now set to make an average of $35 million for the next half-decade, setting him and his family up for life. Even Quickley’s teammate back in Kentucky, Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey, <a href="https://x.com/TyreseMaxey/status/1806688424499216515" rel="noopener">wants to grab</a> a piece of the dough the Raptors guard just made, hilariously reminding him of the time he paid for his meal way back when.</p><p>“Ummm sirrrr…. Remember back in school when I paid for your chick fil a. 😂😂 @IQ_GodSon,” Maxey wrote on his official Twitter (X) account.</p><p>When it comes to matters of money, people rarely forget. Tyrese Maxey may have known way before they would become multi-millionaires that Immanuel Quickley was going to be destined for greatness, so perhaps that meal he paid for was simply an investment.</p><p>It won’t be long anyway until the Raptors guard jokes about the amount of money Maxey will be making. Even then, the Raptors are looking to turn things around quickly especially when their young core is getting very expensive.</p><p>Still, having Immanuel Quickley, who averaged 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 6.8 assists on 42/40/84 shooting splits <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/immanuel-quickley-stats-raptors" rel="noopener">in 38 games</a> with the Raptors, and legitimate All-Star two-way force in Scottie Barnes as the franchise cornerstones isn’t the worst place to start even though they’ll be taking up a huge percentage of the cap moving forward.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-davion-mitchell-traded-raptors-3-player-deal">Raptors also traded</a> for Davion Mitchell in a buy-low for a former lottery pick, they still have Gradey Dick who’s looking to emerge as a more consistent player in his sophomore season, and they also drafted Ja’Kobe Walter, a 3-and-D prospect who should thrive as an off-ball player alongside the playmaking of Quickley and Barnes.</p><p>The players the Raptors have may not be enough yet to challenge for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news Friday morning.</p><p>The Raptors acquired Quickley in the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-og-anunoby-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-knicks-raptors-trade">blockbuster trade</a> that sent OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks ahead of last season’s trade deadline. The 25-year-old guard is a restricted free agent this offseason, but Toronto made it a priority to secure his future <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-scottie-barnes-on-verge-270-million-contract-extension">alongside Scottie Barnes</a>.</p><p>Quickley showed a lot of promise during his time with the Knicks after he was selected 25th in the 2020 NBA Draft, but it became clear last season that his future wasn’t in New York. Knowing that, the Raptors made it a point to get him in the Anunoby trade to make him a part of their new young core. He immediately became Toronto’s full-time starting point guard, starting 38 games and averaging 18.6 points, 6.8 assists and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 42.2% from the field and 39.5% from 3-point range.</p><p>The guard will look to take another step forward in his first full season with the franchise and with potentially an even bigger minutes load. He played 33.3 minutes per game with the Raptors after playing just 24.0 minutes per game this past season in New York.</p><h2><b>The Raptors’ future with Immanuel Quickley</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Raptors-Scottie-Barnes-and-Immanuel-Quickley.jpg"><figcaption>John E. The Raptors went just 25-57 last season, but they unfortunately lost their own first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs because of the Jakob Poeltl trade. They did have the No. 19 pick from the Indiana Pacers thanks to the Siakam deal, which turned into Ja’Kobe Walter.</p><p>Poeltl is still around, at least for now, and a decision must be made on free agent Gary Trent Jr. Toronto did just make an intriguing mover earlier this week, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-davion-mitchell-traded-raptors-3-player-deal">acquiring Davion Mitchell</a> and Sasha Vezenkov for Jalen McDaniels in a trade. The Raptors also have youngsters Gradey Dick and Ochai Agbaji to go along with Walter.</p><p>With Quickley and Barnes now set to sign new long-term contracts, Toronto is hoping these two will help lead them into the future. The Raptors still probably won’t be all that good in 2024-25, but they could be feisty, especially if these two continue their development. Quickley might not ever be an All-Star, but there’s still untapped potential there that could boost this rebuild.</p><p>If this young core develops and some of the other young guys become key contributors, Toronto could be a problem in the next few years. It was an emotional night that welcomed RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, who were traded in the Anunoby trade, back to New York.</p><p>For Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn, it was a chance to see their former team, which continued its rebuild by trading Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers. But for Barrett and Quickley, it was a return to their first NBA home. From first-round draft picks to key players on playoff teams, they inspired hope and provided great memories for a fanbase starved of success.</p><p>Before and after the game, Knicks players <a href="https://x.com/nyknicks/status/1748916894587916781?s=20" rel="noopener">showed love</a> to their former teammates. New York <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-drop-awesome-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-tribute-in-msg-return" rel="noopener">played a tribute video</a> for the former players as it went on to defeat Toronto by a score of 126-100. Fans at Madison Square Garden applauded Barrett and Quickley during player introductions and the tribute presentation. And that’s something I’ll take with me forever. Those guys mean a lot to me and I want the best for ’em. New York should be extremely proud of them. They raised them. Seriously, seriously — they raised them. They were brought up here and now they’re gonna take off and they’re gonna flourish for many more years. So, I’m proud of them.”</p><p>Jalen Brunson was teammates with Barrett and Quickley for just a season and a half but certainly got close to them as he helped return the Knicks to the playoffs. He had <a href="https://x.com/StevePopper/status/1748915744769712263?s=20" rel="noopener">nothing but nice things</a> to say about them, according to Steve Popper of Newsday.</p><p>“Love those two,” Brunson said, via Newsday. “Being teammates with them the past couple of years has been special. Great character dudes. They both work really hard. Everything you want in a franchise player. Toronto has a couple good dudes over there.”</p><p>For as wholesome as the reunion was, it still <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-open-up-on-returning-to-play-knicks-after-trade-to-toronto" rel="noopener">felt bizarre</a> to the people involved. Being traded in the middle of the season didn’t afford Barrett or Quickley to process what it would be like to leave New York (and vice versa for the former Raptors players). In the end, they were met with a huge outpouring of love and appreciation.</p><p>Quickley was one of the Knicks’ best and most important players over the last two years. His ability to play both ways and create offense for himself and others made him super valuable as not only the backup to Brunson but also someone who could play alongside him for spurts. He has blossomed with the Raptors in a starting role, averaging 17.5 points, 5.7 assists and 4.5 rebounds per game.</p><p>Barrett was picked third overall in the 2019 NBA Draft, the highest pick the Knicks made since drafting Patrick Ewing first overall over 30 years prior. Although he ended up not developing into the true All-Star-level player many had hoped for, he still left a mark. From proudly declaring he was a Knick after being drafted to helping lead the team to the playoffs as a second-year player to his game-winner against the Boston Celtics, Barrett’s time in New York was pretty memorable.</p><p>The Knicks now look better with Anunoby while Quickley (and Barrett to a lesser extent) gives the Raptors some youthful upside next to star forward Scottie Barnes. While he averaged better than 18 points and five rebounds for New York, he didn’t quite live up to expectations.</p><p>Quickley averaged 13 points and three assists during his time with the Knicks, and while most New York fans agree that his future is incredibly bright, there wasn’t ample playing time available for him in New York behind Jalen Brunson.</p><p>Despite the immediate impact provided by Barrett and Quickley with the Raptors, the Knicks have improved since the December 30th trade. New York is 8-2 since adding Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-historic-og-anunoby-10-game-stat-shows-missing-piece" rel="noopener">Anunoby has posted a best-ever</a> (in NBA history) +170 plus-minus through his first 10 games with the team.</p><p>Knicks’ shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo spoke on the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-surging-as-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-return-to-madison-square-garden" rel="noopener">return of Barrett and Quickley</a>, as he shared the floor with the former Knicks for almost half of the 2023-24 season.</p><p>“I’m excited for the Garden to give them a warm welcome because it’s much deserved,” DiVincenzo told reporters after Thursday’s game. “They’re going to come in Saturday with … a point to prove…natural. As the former Knicks players prepare to return to Madison Square Garden wearing Raptors jerseys, they share their thoughts on the impending reunion with New York fans.</p><p>When asked about the <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1748770731742175712" rel="noopener">potential reception</a> from Knicks fans in their return to the Garden, RJ Barrett expressed a mix of anticipation and focus on the game ahead. “It’d be nice, you know, it’d be nice, but like I said, I’m trying to focus on the game as much as I can. And what makes the matchup even more emotional is that it will take place at home, in Madison Square Garden. So, Knicks fans will get to weigh in, too.</p><h2><b>RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley return to MSG</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/NBA_Power_Rankings_Week_12_Thunder_proving_to_be_real_title_threats_vs._Celtics_Nuggets_2.webp"></figure><p>Barrett was perceived to be the franchise’s savior. He was selected third overall in the 2019 draft, coming to the biggest media market in the world while facing tremendous pressure to succeed. But Barrett embraced that pressure, verbalizing his preference to play in New York time and again despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-rj-barretts-emotional-take-homecoming-after-knicks-trade" rel="noopener">growing up in Toronto</a>.</p><p>And while he didn’t grow into the player Knicks fans hoped he’d become, he showed flashes of becoming that guy. Specifically, Barrett looked like he turned a corner in last year’s Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Miami Heat, averaging 20.8 points per game.</p><p>Quickley arrived in New York with much less fanfare, but his impact was pretty immediate. He was selected 25th overall in 2020 by the Oklahoma City Thunder and landed in New York as part of a draft-night trade. Despite a seemingly strange fit given his size and the fact he wasn’t a natural lead guard, Quickley was rather successful right out of the gate, averaging 11.4 points in 19.4 minutes per game as a rookie.</p><p>So far, the former Knicks are experiencing success in Toronto. Barrett is averaging a career-best 20.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game through his first 10 games. And Quickley is posting career-best numbers, too, including 19 points and 5.2 assists per game while shooting a blistering 45.2% on three-point attempts.</p><h2><b>Knicks thriving since trade</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Sixers-Knicks-Joel-Embiid-Jalen-Brunson-OG-Anunoby-Nick-Nurse.webp"></figure><p>Despite the immediate impact provided by Barrett and Quickley with the Raptors, the Knicks have improved since the December 30th trade. New York is 8-2 since adding Anunoby, Precious Achiuwa and Malachi Flynn, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-historic-og-anunoby-10-game-stat-shows-missing-piece" rel="noopener">Anunoby has posted a best-ever</a> (in NBA history) +170 plus-minus through his first 10 games with the team.</p><p>But Anunoby acknowledged that while Saturday is technically just another game, playing against his former will feel “weird.”</p><p>“[I’ll just] go out there, try to win the game,” Anunoby said, per SNY Knicks. “See the staff, see my old teammates. It’ll be weird. But gotta do it.”</p><p>Knicks’ shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo also spoke on the return of Barrett and Quickley, as he shared the floor with the former Knicks for almost half of the 2023-24 season.</p><p>“I’m excited for the Garden to give them a warm welcome because it’s much deserved,” DiVincenzo told reporters after Thursday’s game. “They’re going to come in Saturday with … a point to prove…natural. We just have to lock in. Not get too keen on what they’re doing. Get a W.”</p><p>Emotions aside, getting a win is the only objective. While there will probably be a few heartwarming moments, it’s important the Knicks take care of business against the Raptors.</p><p>Entering Friday’s action, New York was tied with the Miami Heat for fifth-place in the Eastern Conference, just a half game behind the Cleveland Cavaliers for fourth. However, to acquire talent, one must relinquish talent. In acquiring Anunoby, the Knicks gave up RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley — two pieces who established themselves as important players for the franchise prior to their departures.</p><p>Nevertheless, even if their paths may now be diverging, the brotherhood Barrett and Quickley have forged with their former Knicks teammates continue to grow. Thus, Randle has been deep in the trenches with the 23-year old lefty. So there must be a plethora of emotions swirling through Randle’s mind when news of Barrett’s departure broke.</p><p>Meanwhile, Immanuel Quickley was with the team starting in the 2020-21 season, one of the more successful seasons in recent Knicks franchise history. Quickley also looks like a star in the making, although it seemed like the Knicks didn’t want to tie a considerable percentage of their available money to two small guards, what with the 24-year old guard eligible for a huge extension this coming offseason.</p><p>Whatever the case may be, it seems like Julius Randle and the Knicks, as well as the Raptors, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-og-anunoby-rj-barrett-immanuel-quickley-knicks-raptors-trade" rel="noopener">both come out of their trade as huge winners</a>. The Knicks were able to consolidate their talent in acquiring OG Anunoby, while the Raptors now have two pieces for their future in Barrett and Quickley.
