Cavaliers guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cleveland-cavaliers-makes-no-brainer-decisions-on-evan-mobley-isaac-okoro" rel="noopener">Isaac Okoro</a> says that in Game 2, the Cavaliers will be ready for <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-jalen-brunson-perfect-reaction-to-josh-hart-rocking-shirt-with-his-face-on-it" rel="noopener">Jalen Brunson</a>‘s ‘antics’ <a href="https://twitter.com/NYPost_Brazille/status/1648028183541825536?s=20" rel="noopener">in terms of drawing fouls</a>, reports New York Post’s Zach Braziller.</p><p>Jalen Brunson had 27 points while only shooting 4-4 from the free-throw line, so a majority of his points did not come from the stripe. Meanwhile, Okoro only made one shot from the field and had the same amount of free-throw attempts, so it is an interesting critique coming from the Cavaliers guard. Nonetheless, taking a post-game jab at an opposing player is par for the course come NBA Playoffs basketball.</p><p>Game 1 between the Cavaliers and Knicks was close throughout, although the Knicks held an advantage for more than 41 minutes. New York was led by Jalen Brunson and the return of Julius Randle from an ankle injury; Brunson poured in his aforementioned 27, while Randle had 19 points and 10 rebounds, with his 10th board leading to game-sealing free-throws from Quentin Grimes.</p><p>The Knicks have to be thrilled to have Randle back on the court, who hadn’t played in a game since March 29th. He showed some signs of rust, but overall put together a very solid effort in helping the Knicks secure a Game 1 victory.</p><p>Looking ahead to Game 2, the Knicks and Cavaliers will play Tuesday night in Cleveland before heading to New York City. Going into the contest, Isaac Okoro should focus more on helping teammate Donovan Mitchell carry less of a load for the Cavaliers. If Mitchell mimics his 38 point Game 1 performance and the Cavaliers lose again, the Knicks will feel pretty good about their chances of advancing in the 2023 NBA Playoffs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Well, you've come to the right place, brother.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Evan Mobley with the third pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, it extensively changed the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cleveland-cavaliers-new-2023-nba-finals-odds-after-blockbuster-donovan-mitchell-trade/">trajectory of the franchise</a>.</p><p>Sure, the team already had Darius Garland, the fantastic young guard who was quietly transforming into a star just under the eyes of the national media, but adding a player like Mobley, the closest thing the NBA has seen to Chris Bosh since, well, Chris Bosh, elevated the team’s profile and ceiling considerably – transforming from a feel-good story to one a legitimate playoff favorite who wouldn’t just be competing for the play-in game but could end up in the fourth-sixth seed with ease. Factor in the presence of young role players like Isaac Okoro, who maybe aren’t stars but are solid enough, and Cleveland is in a pretty good spot moving forward.</p><p>So naturally, when the time came for GM Koby Altman to <a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisFedor/status/1581367095186493440">pick up the contract options</a> on Mobley and Okoro, the decision was relatively easy: yes.</p><p>Now locked up until <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/yearly/cap/">2025 and 2024, respectively</a>, Mobley and Okoro are now locked into J.B. Bickerstaff’s rotation for the next few years, with the potential to earn even longer contact with the team moving forward if they continue to progress along their individual paths. For Mobley, that likely means a max contract, which would mark the third max contract player on the team alongside Garland and recently acquired shooting guard Donovan Mitchell – marking the first time the Cleveland Cavaliers had three such players since the Kyrie Irving-Lebron James-Kevin Love era – and as for Okoro? That sparked some rumors that the Cavs could potentially trade Isaac Okoro to open up more minutes for Agbaji, but it appears that will not be the case.</p><p><a href="https://www.actionnetwork.com/nba/nba-free-agency-and-trade-intel-sizing-up-where-jalen-brunson-rudy-gobert-and-others-will-land">Via Matt Moore of The Action Network:</a></p><blockquote>The Cavaliers are not looking to trade Isaac Okoro despite their need for offensive upgrades and the drafting of Ochai Agbaji.</blockquote><p>It’s no secret the Cavs could use some more offensive pieces to complement the likes of Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, Lauri Markkanen, and Jarrett Allen. An immediate need for Cleveland is three-point shooting and guard depth, especially behind Garland. <a href="https://cavsnation.com/2-players-cavs-must-sign-in-2022-nba-free-agency/">Tyus Jones and Ricky Rubio are two possible free-agent targets in that regard.</a></p><p>Despite not putting up monster numbers through his first two NBA seasons, Okoro has given the Cavs a scoring punch. He averaged 8.8 points and three rebounds in 2021-22, starting 61 of the 67 games he appeared in. There is always the chance that Agbaji competes with him for the SF starting spot next season, though. Garland and Allen, the most lethal pick-and-roll duo in the NBA, <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-how-darius-garland-took-the-all-star-leap-for-cleveland/">were both</a> <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-how-jarrett-allen-took-the-all-star-leap/">named All-Stars</a>. Evan Mobley has taken the league by storm, looking like a <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-breakdown-evan-mobley-historically-good-rookie-season/">long-time veteran right out of the gates</a>. He’s the favorite to win Rookie of the Year.</p><p>The Cavs’ depth of young players extends beyond that trio, though. Collin Sexton was the most statistically productive up until he suffered his season-ending injury through 11 games. Lauri Markkannen has slid into an unconventional, but effective role as the team’s starting small forward. Dean Wade, Lamar Stevens, and Dylan Windler have the shown the ability to be role-players when needed. That group by itself is a very strong core. However, there’s one more wildcard that hasn’t yet been mentioned, which is Isaac Okoro.</p><p>Okoro was drafted to Cleveland following the infamous NBA bubble, and experienced the shortest offseason in league history. He was thrown into the fire from day one, having to guard the opponent’s best player night in and night out. His teammates didn’t offer much help, as he started alongside four sub-par defenders in Darius Garland, Collin Sexton, Kevin Love, and Tristan Thompson.</p><p>He wasn’t afforded many touches, but as the season winded down and injuries begun to pile up, he received much more opportunities with the ball in his hands. The rookie displayed some genuine flashes, including a breakout 32-point outing against the soon-to-be-NBA-Finals-bound Phoenix Suns. Selected fifth overall in the 2020 NBA Draft, his development would seem to be of high priority for the Cavs. That hasn’t been the case. Despite being the second youngest and second highest draft selection out of the young’uns in Cleveland, he’s sorta been tossed to the side.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Why is that?</p><h2>Okoro hasn’t had the opportunity to expand his game in Cleveland</h2><p>Isaac Okoro was one of the few bright spots towards the end of last year for a Cavs team that stumbled to the finish line. Fast forward to this season, and… not much has changed from the Okoro we saw for most of last season. The defense, his main calling card coming out of college, has improved. His efficiency has seen a slight uptick from inside and outside the perimeter. Most other aspects of his game have remained, for the most part, stagnant.</p><p>As soon as Evan Mobley came to town, his development leapfrogged Okoro’s on the team hierarchy. And with the team winning games or at the very least, competing every night, developing younger players in general has become less of a priority. JB Bickerstaff hasn’t been able to afford Isaac the touches he needs to improve his offensive game, knowing that they will likely yield negative results in the present. Although the Cavs have had a successful season, they don’t have much margin for error.</p><p>The former Auburn Tiger kicked off preseason games as a starter for Cleveland, alongside Garland, Sexton, Mobley and Allen. That frontcourt trio had some very rough offensive limitations from a floor spacing perspective. Opposing defenses didn’t respect any of the three guys from outside the perimeter, and playing them alongside two guards who love to attack the paint, it resulted in some extreme congestion inside.</p><p>At the beginning of the regular season, Okoro got substituted at the three for Lauri Markkanen, in favor of a shooting threat and a more unique defensive scheme. He rode the bench for a little, until joining the starters again once Sexton exited the rotation. Still, after filling in for him, he’s been afforded minimal time on the ball, often camping in the corner.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">The DG-JA duo hasn’t been as effective recently as it has been all season.</p><p>Teams are crowding the paint and daring the Cavs to shoot. At least until he gets his jump shot figured out. Teams don’t guard him. And he struggles to attack the space in front of him off-the-catch, because the paint is often crowded. The environment that the Cavs have placed their sophomore swingman in is rather unfortunate for him at the moment. So where do they go from here?</p><h2>What should the Cavs’ roadmap look like for Isaac Okoro?</h2><p>The reason Isaac Okoro gets floor time is because of his defense, but there are two sides of the floor. He is developing into one of the better perimeter defenders in the NBA. For him to make a legitimate impact in the future, though, he’ll need to be more than a zero offensively. Both players have similar sizes/builds, and are explosive off-the-catch. They each came into the league with under-developed handles and jumpshots. Because of that and them both being relatively rigid, they’re primarily straight-line/strength-based drivers with the ball in their hands. Okoro’s far from that level, so how does JB Bickerstaff and Company get him there? The jump shot will have to improve, but most of that is out of the team’s control. It’ll just take a lot of offseason time commitment. The main thing the Cavs need to do to put their former lottery pick in a position to succeed, is work on the handle.</p><p>The best way to go about doing that is giving him more on-ball reps. It doesn’t have to be much, but it has to be more than what it’s at now. That likely means he should play in more of the minutes without DG on the floor, considering the Cavs are lacking in ball-handlers outside of him. There’s more to it, though.</p><p>Before any kid learns to ride the bike, they start out with training wheels. For Okoro to become a more consistent threat with the ball in his hands, he should see more chances handling the ball in spaced out lineups before getting those reps next to lineups featuring groupings such as Frobley. With him now being probably the seventh most important player in the team’s future, is it possible for Isaac to see his best-case outcome unfold in the wine &amp; gold?</p><p>It can happen. It would almost certainly happen with him coming off-the-bench. If the coaching staff doesn’t put much effort into caterings towards his development, then it’s hard to see it unfolding in his favor. The Cavs pretty much have their team locked in for the future, barring a LeBron James re-appearance, but if Koby Altman were to seek out one more high-profile trade, it wouldn’t surprise me to see Okoro be the one biting the bullet as the sweetener.</p><p>Regardless, it’s hard to call the Cavaliers drafting of Isaac Okoro at #5 in 2020 a miss. He still has untapped upside that the team’s sooner-than-expected success got in the way of. There weren’t many better options in that range, outside of perhaps Tyrese Haliburton (who requested that Cleveland not take him) and Devin Vassell.</p><p>Right now it’s up to JB Bickerstaff and his young hard-nosed defender to walk that delicate line of advancing his offensive game, meanwhile keeping the Cavs on track to pick up wins as the playoffs approach.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They improved to 29-19 on Monday night after completing an escape job against the New York Knicks, 95-93.</p><p>The Cavaliers are no. 5 in the Eastern Conference and are 10 games over .500 for the first time since 2018. The smart moves of the team in recent years have netted Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, Lauri Markkanen, and Isaac Okoro, who <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-darius-garland-reaction-amid-clevelands-hot-streak-shows-true-leadership/">now make up the core</a>.</p><p>But aside from the players, the improvement of coach JB Bickerstaff has also made wonders for the Cavaliers. Except maybe for one thing. According to a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/recap?gameId=401360528">report by ESPN</a>, Bickerstaff likes to play old-school music during shootarounds. But the tunes of Mary J. Blige and Bob Marley, just to name a few, don’t really sound good for the young players, including Okoro who hilariously roasted Bickerstaff.</p><blockquote>“His music brings the energy down. I tell him every day to change the music, but he doesn’t listen to me.”</blockquote><p>But clearly, the Cavaliers are playing beautiful music on the court. After dwelling in the cellar in the post-LeBron James years, the squad has finally had its much-awaited turnaround, and Bickerstaff has been a huge part of it.</p><p>The Cavaliers have been hobbled by injuries and some bouts of inconsistency. It’s understandable that the Cavs would be in good spirits after their recent success. Wise move, Mr. Okoro.</p><p>It’s even funnier that Garland came at Okoro with the “you don’t have the vertical for it” quip. How will Okoro recover from such a roast? Cavs fans should lobby for a practice dunk contest between Garland and Okoro, just so the former can put his money where his mouth is.</p><p>In all seriousness, moments like this show just how much fun the Cavs are having right now. Okoro will undergo a period of treatment and rehabilitation. His return to play will be approximately two to three weeks.”</blockquote><p>This isn’t great news for the Cavs, but it certainly could have been worse. If he had broken his arm or something of that nature, the Cavs would have been in an even tougher position than they already are at that guard position. They have now lost Collin Sexton, Ricky Rubio, and need everybody else to stay healthy.</p><p>Cleveland has certainly been playing better than most people were expecting them to this season. They are one of the most fun teams to watch in all of basketball as they are currently 21-16 and hold the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference. There is a good chance that the Cavs would have potentially been a top-three seed at this moment if they were able to stay healthy. Unfortunately, they have run into some very tough injuries and that’s going to make it tough for them to find some success throughout the season. They have shown that their young guys and veterans are ready to step up and make some noise this year, despite the injuries.</p><p>Isaac Okoro will be missed, but Cleveland will continue to have others step up in his absence.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With a COVID-19 outbreak making its way across the league, fans can just hope that the league can contain the spread of the virus.</p><p>Okoro had scored in double figures in four straight games after doing in just four games total throughout the <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-3-reasons-why-cleveland-gigantic-experiment-big-brain-move/">season</a>. The second-year pro shot at least 57 percent from the field in each of those contests. Unfortunately, he’ll now have to remain out indefinitely, with the Cavs saying that more information would be provided as available.</p><p>Okoro will now have to test negative twice and remain without a fever for 24 hours in order to return to the court for the Cavs. That puts his status very much in doubt for Saturday’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks.</p><p>It’s an unfortunate blow to the Cavs’ wing depth, as well as a temporary roadblock in the development of Okoro, who was really starting to put things together for Cleveland.</p><p>Here’s hoping that Isaac Okoro is able to return as soon as possible for the Cavs. Hopefully, Cleveland can also avoid having any more players test positive as the virus outbreak spreads across the NBA.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

It’s not always that someone would take with him, not one, not two, but three defenders into the air and yam an all of them at the same time just like what <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-clevelands-cornerstone-stud-of-the-future-revealed-and-its-not-collin-sexton/">Okoro</a> did. And it’s not like Okoro needed that dunk to give the Cavs a shot in the arm during a tight portion of the game because he did that when Cleveland was already up by over 35 points. It was really just one of the many cherries on top for the Cavs, who snagged 124-89 win by the end of it all.</p><p>Okoro’s teammate, Darius Garland talked about that dunk following the game and joked about missing Okoro’s flex. But Okoro had a perfect and hilarious answer to that, per <a href="https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2021/12/cavaliers-isaac-okoro-dunks-with-a-flair-hits-from-the-corner-but-forgets-to-flex.html">Paul Hoynes of Cleveland.com</a>.</p><blockquote>Darius Garland, who led the Cavs with 21 points, came off the bench screaming. The Cavs forward was named to the 2020-21 NBA All-Rookie Second Team, giving the team another talented piece of its young core.</p><p>The Auburn product showed serious improvement on the offensive end towards the end of his rookie season. Throughout nine games in May, Okoro averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/okorois01/splits/2021">16.6 points</a>, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists.</p><p>The Cavs set a goal for Okoro to work on his shooting and playmaking this offseason, but the results have yet to be seen. Although the Cavs lost in overtime, the 20-year-old swingman still made history of his own as he put up impressive numbers on the floor. Okoro became the seventh rookie in the league to tally a 30-point outing this season and his 32 points also became the most by a Cavaliers rookie since Jordan McRae back in 2016. The feat became more impressive as Collin Sexton, Darius Garland, and even Kevin Porter Jr., who are all known to be solid scorers, failed to reach the same point tally during their respective rookie seasons.</p><p>Aside from recording a career-high 32 points, the former Auburn standout also notched three rebounds, six assists, and a steal through 47 minutes played. However, the Cavaliers still succumbed to a top-seeded Suns squad by way of a 134-118 overtime loss which dropped them to a 21-44 record.</p><p>Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff still saw a silver lining from the defeat and was also the least to be surprised by Okoro’s performance. <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-rookie-isaac-okoros-development-drawing-rave-reviews/">He already knew that the rookie has the ability to do those things</a> on the floor whenever he is given the right opportunities.</p><p><a href="https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2021/05/can-cleveland-cavaliers-find-light-at-end-of-dark-rebuild-tunnel-like-phoenix-suns-finally-did.html">Via Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com:</a></p><blockquote>“It’s the next step for him,” Bickerstaff said. “When we watched him in college, he had a really good knack for finding the paint and making the proper reads. Bickerstaff praised swingman Isaac Okoro for his advanced defensive acumen and overall growth over the course of his rookie season.</p><p>Bickerstaff said Monday the former Auburn product is playing looser and has a great sense for where he is supposed to be:</p><blockquote>“I think it’s night and day how comfortable [Okoro] is,” Bickerstaff said, via Chris Fedor of <a href="https://twitter.com/ChrisFedor/status/1384184951180910592">cleveland.com</a>. “Has an understanding defensively that I’ve come to appreciate, where you don’t have to tell him what to do. Now, he’s in a position where you give him an assignment &amp; allow him to use his abilities.”</blockquote><p>Isaac Okoro was hailed as one of the best individual defenders in his draft class. The Cavs made him the No. 4 pick last fall and, while he has hardly been a prolific scorer (8.3 points), the 20-year-old has impressed his head coach this season.</p><p>Bickerstaff’s confidence in Okoro’s abilities has been on display pretty much from the very start of the season. Okoro has repeatedly been assigned to some of the tougher scorers and playmakers in the league. There have been growing pains, but he has gained valuable experience for a Cavs team likely hoping he will develop sooner rather than later.</p><p>Much of that development will actually need to come on the offensive end of the floor. Okoro was never much of a perimeter shooter in college. It’s a component of his game he could grow into going forward. But he has the athleticism to attack individual matchups and get to the basket.</p><p>The Cavs and Bickerstaff will keep a keen eye on Isaac Okoro as the team makes a late push for a play-in spot, though the loss to the Chicago Bulls on Saturday <a href="http://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-kevin-loves-nsfw-reaction-to-cavs-blowing-opportunity-in-play-in-race-over-the-weekend/" rel="noopener">didn’t help their cause.</a></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The big man did commit six turnovers, though, which is a bit of a sour spot to his otherwise noteworthy play.</p><p>For his part, Okoro got another start on Thursday, and the fifth overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft finished with eight points, two boards, two dimes, a steal, and a couple of blocks in 39 minutes of action. It appears that the 19-year-old has now fully recovered from the <a href="http://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-isaac-okoro-dealing-foot-sprain/">ankle issue</a> he was dealing with earlier in the season.</p><p>Cleveland’s win over Memphis lifts them to 5-4 on the season, as they continue to impress early in the campaign. The Cavs return to action on Saturday in a tough matchup against Giannis Antetokunmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
