Making the playoffs for the second straight year was a big accomplishment, as was seeing the growth of young, core talents such as Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels.</p><p>Edwards is obviously the leader and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/anthony-edwards-face-of-timberwolves-championship-future" rel="noopener">face of the franchise</a> after ascending to All-Star status, but McDaniels proved to be a talent that truly impacts winning and losing for this franchise. He’s one of the better all-around defenders in the NBA and McDaniels is quickly becoming a secondary contributor on the offensive end of the court that the team can rely on. This is why the soon-to-be 23-year-old forward is a player Minnesota doesn’t want to lose anytime soon.</p><p>Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly recently made an appearance on “The Jon Krawczynski Show” podcast and spoke with The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski about how the team wants to <a href="https://theathletic.com/4884702/2023/09/21/tim-connelly-timberwolves-discussion/" rel="noopener">keep McDaniels long-term</a>.</p><p>“We’d love to get something done. We want Jaden to be here as long as possible,” Connelly stated. “Oftentimes those back-and-forths pick up more as the season gets closer, but fingers crossed. In my experience in Denver and here, we like to reward people who earned it. Jaden is a huge part of what we’re doing now. He’s going to get better and better and better.”</p><p>There is no denying that McDaniels has contributed to winning in Minnesota. He’s grown as a shooter and scorer every season that he’s been with the team, and the young forward proved that he is one of the most versatile defenders in the league. Standing 6’9″ with a 7’0″ wingspan, McDaniels can guard virtually any position and is a threat to disrupt passing lanes off the ball.</p><p>As he prepares to enter his fourth NBA season, McDaniels enters a contract year. Yet to agree to a rookie-scale extension with the team, he is trending towards becoming a restricted free agent in 2024.</p><p>“We think his best basketball is in front of him,” Connelly continued. “As I told Jaden and his representation, the cool thing about extension talks is they should be overwhelmingly positive. The fact that you want an extension speaks to the team’s excitement about his upside. Very few guys are fortunate to get extensions, so again we’re hopeful we can meet that point where we’re both happy with something moving forward.</p><p>“I think he’s going to have a good year and we hope he’s here for a long, long time.”</p><p>This past year, McDaniels played in a total of 79 games, averaging 12.1 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.0 blocks while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. He received 40 total voting points for the All-Defensive team during the 2022-23 season, the second-most total voting points for a player who did not receive this recognition behind only Giannis Antetokounmpo.</p><p>The Timberwolves have <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-firm-jaden-mcdaniels-stance-despite-nba-draft-trade-offers" rel="noopener">shown no willingness</a> to move on from McDaniels in recent years despite there being interest in him from rival teams. They obviously want him to be a focal point on their roster for many years to come, but there is still a level of maturity that needs to happen as well.</p><p>McDaniels put the T-Wolves in a bad spot entering the postseason last year after he <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-jaden-mcdaniels-seemingly-injures-himself-rudy-gobert-kyle-anderson-drama" rel="noopener">punched a wall</a> and broke his hand in their final regular season game. He ended up missing both play-in tournament games, as well as their entire first-round series versus the Denver Nuggets, who ultimately went on to win the 2023 NBA Finals.</p><p>As he prepares for the 2023-24 season, McDaniels’ focus is solely on helping his team grow from their 42-40 record from a season ago. The Timberwolves have talent and are heading in the right direction. However, there never seemed to be much <a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/0itS8tlbo9ZboaJBrHaQSN?si=61d4e6ced0a84a5d&amp;nd=1" rel="noopener">traction on a deal</a> involving KAT or the No. 3 pick anyways, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski (h/t The Jon Krawczynski Show).</p><p>However, Minnesota “<a href="https://theathletic.com/4633409/2023/06/23/nba-draft-2023-minnesota-timberwolves-leonard-miller" rel="noopener">received a ton of interest</a> in Jaden McDaniels,” Krawczynski reports, with teams all over the draft board calling and inquiring on his availability. The Wolves rebuffed every offer, viewing McDaniels as a huge piece of the team’s long-term future.”</p><p>One of the lone bright spots for the Timberwolves last season, the 22-year-old McDaniels broke out as an elite multi-positional defender in what was just his third season. The 28th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, McDaniels has already exceeded the expectations of many despite having more room to grow.</p><p>Averaging career-highs of 12.1 points per game, 51.7 percent shooting from the field and 39.8 percent shooting from 3, McDaniels can continue exploring his offensive game for a Timberwolves team that only has a couple of volume scorers. Given his positional versatility, McDaniels can start at small forward alongside KAT and Gobert in the frontcourt or slide to power forward in the event that one of Towns or Gobert get traded down the line.</p><p>What can be certain though, given their reluctance to surrender McDaniels and their decision to acquire G League Ignite forward Leonard Miller at No. 33, is that Minnesota wants to improve their defense.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He finished with 76 blocks and 74 steals, making him the only player in the league to have at least 75 blocks and 70 steals. Despite his production and being considered by his peers as one of the better defenders out there, however, he failed to even make it to the All-Defensive Second Team. Meanwhile, the likes of Draymond Green, Dillon Brooks and OG Anunoby were all voted into the group.</p><p>Towns, like his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mike-conley-defends-jaden-mcdaniels-following-all-defensive-team-snub" rel="noopener">Timberwolves teammate Mike Conley</a>, found it utterly disrespectful that McDaniels didn’t even make the cut. The star big man took to Twitter to show his support for McDaniels and highlight how the 22-year-old was robbed of the honor.</p><p>“Jaden McDaniels <a href="https://twitter.com/KarlTowns/status/1656099822326403072" rel="noopener">not making an All-Defensive Team</a> is criminal,” Towns wrote.</p><p>For what it’s worth, it’s not only Karl-Anthony Towns who felt that way. Even <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-jaden-mcdaniels-all-defensive-team-snub-has-nba-fans-up-in-arms" rel="noopener">Timberwolves fans and NBA supporters</a> in general couldn’t believe that Jaden McDaniels was snubbed for the All-Defensive Teams despite his performance and consistency throughout the season.</p><p>“I’m having a hard time formulating any reasonable hypothesis why Jaden McDaniels was left off All-Defense. This is not a ‘someone didn’t vote Jokic Top 5 MVP’ outlier, as more than half the voters didn’t ballot 1st or 2nd team. I’m clearly out of the loop, what am I missing?” social media personality and sports fan Rob Perez tweeted.</p><p>There are a lot of other deserving candidates who didn’t make it, but there’s no denying McDaniels is one of the biggest All-Defensive snubs along with Giannis Antetokounmpo. He was vital in Minnesota’s playoff qualification, and he has the numbers to back up his All-Defensive team claim. He’s the only player in the entire league to record at least 75 blocks and 70 steals, finishing with 76 blocks and 74 steals.</p><p>Several NBA fans couldn’t believe that McDaniels didn’t even make it to the All-Defensive Second Team considering his production on that end of the floor. While the other selections definitely made their own strong cases, there is no denying that McDaniels should have been part of it.</p><p>“OG Anunoby receiving 19 more 2nd team votes, 11 more 1st team votes than Jaden McDaniels <a href="https://twitter.com/DWolfsonKSTP/status/1656001028016185347" rel="noopener">would not have been something</a> I would’ve wagered on. And Anunoby is a rock-solid defender,” Darren Wolfson of SKOR North said.</p><p>“That Jaden McDaniels <a href="https://twitter.com/JonKrawczynski/status/1656001363833241601" rel="noopener">did not make 1st</a> or 2nd team All-Defense is absolutely mind blowing. Wow,” Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic added.</p><p>Online media personality Rob Perez added, “<a href="https://twitter.com/WorldWideWob/status/1656009970222252032" rel="noopener">I’m having a hard time</a> formulating any reasonable hypothesis why Jaden McDaniels was left off All-Defense. This is not a “someone didn’t vote Jokic Top 5 MVP” outlier, as more than half the voters didn’t ballot 1st or 2nd team. I’m clearly out of the loop, what am I missing?”</p><p>Meanwhile, a fan blamed the media for the voting, highlighting that the voters were probably just watching the big market teams. “Feel for Jaden McDaniels, who had a legitimate case as the league’s best defender this season and was absolutely the most versatile on a night to night basis. Conley <a href="https://twitter.com/mconley11/status/1656024130502942720">made it clear</a> that he couldn’t believe Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels was left off both <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-all-defensive-teams-revealed-jaren-jackson" rel="noopener">2023 NBA All-Defensive Teams</a>.</p><p>When the NBA All-Defensive Teams were released, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-jaden-mcdaniels-drops-bonkers-best-defender-claim" rel="noopener">Jaden McDaniels</a> was widely considered to be among the biggest snubs. During the 2022-2023 NBA season, the Timberwolves’ star was the only player in the entire league to total at least 75  blocks and 70 steals. McDaniels averaged 3.9 rebounds, 1.0 blocks and 0.9 steals in 79 games.</p><p>McDaniels had a 111.6 defensive rating for the season, <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/advanced?CF=GP*GE*70:MIN*GE*30&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=-1&amp;sort=DEF_RATING">ranking 12th</a> among players who played at least 70 games and averaged at least 30 minutes per contest. The Timberwolves’ defensive rating was <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/m/mcdanja02/on-off/2023">1.9 points worse</a> with McDaniels off the floor, compared to when he played.</p><p>Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr. received the most votes for the All-Defensive First Team. Jackson is joined by Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley, Bucks guard Jrue Holiday and Chicago Bulls guard Alex Caruso.</p><p>Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green and Toronto Raptors forward O.G. Anunoby made the All-Defensive Second Team ahead of McDaniels.
