But plenty of Sixers players already have hit the court together in the months leading up to camp.</p><p>Rico Hines, one of the Sixers’ new assistant coaches, hosts pickup runs at the UCLA campus to give players the chance to get work in against fellow NBA players and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/exclusive-rico-hines-speaks-on-secret-ucla-runs-why-he-organizes-them-and-more" rel="noopener">improve their skills</a>. All-Stars, up-and-coming young studs, role players and rookies alike participate in the runs. The games go to seven points with shots worth only one point from anywhere on the court. Whoever scores the seventh point must then make a free throw to secure the win.</p><p>Hines stresses to the players that he <a href="https://youtu.be/-51C8ih39rg?si=MOGwiwdNzdEvM_Bs&amp;t=132" rel="noopener">wants them to play hard</a>. Obviously, no one plays as hard as they would in the playoffs, but they also don’t loaf around and exchange open dunks like it’s the All-Star Game. The runs are for real, full-speed basketball against high-level competition. Hines displays genuine appreciation for the players who come out to his gym to improve and wants to host a safe haven for those who match his passion for the game.</p><p>Paul Reed, Jaden Springer, De’Anthony Melton, Terquavion Smith, Mo Bamba and Ricky Council IV represented the Sixers across numerous days of scrimmages. For the purposes of examining how they perform, we’ll be looking at a few games from Hines’ YouTube page. The runs hold multiple games at a time but only one gets filmed up close, so we’re just going to focus on those.</p><p>The games, the dates they were posted online and the Sixers’ opponents are as follows:</p><ul><li>Game 1 was <a href="https://youtu.be/UEWVMKYRsJ0?si=QwQ22cOzQvCK4bo_&amp;t=732" rel="noopener">posted on August 20</a> and featured Springer, Reed, Melton, Smith and Council going up against a team headlined by Harrison Barnes, Thomas Bryant and Markquis Nowell.</li><li>Game 2 was <a href="https://youtu.be/UEWVMKYRsJ0?si=DapwO97k9OUzV8EG&amp;t=1636" rel="noopener">from the same day,</a> with the same Sixers facing off against a group of Toronto Raptors headlined by Pascal Siakam and Gradey Dick.</li><li>Game 3 was <a href="https://youtu.be/-51C8ih39rg?si=bbHVv82v5nPIwBvr&amp;t=241" rel="noopener">posted on August 23</a> and featured Springer, Reed, Siakam, Kevon Looney and Jabari Smith Jr. going up against a group of guys who could either be future teammates of James Harden or future Sixers: Norman Powell, Bones Hyland, Robert Covington, K.J. Martin and Brandon Boston Jr.</li><li>Game 4 was <a href="https://youtu.be/HREMBeKzvK4?si=Rl1wpn6k0Xt1-2fE&amp;t=481" rel="noopener">posted on September 1</a> and featured Reed, Bamba, Springer, Smith and Council going against a team with Barnes and two of his Sacramento Kings teammates: Kevin Huerter and Davion Mitchell.</li><li>Game 5 was <a href="https://youtu.be/Hy4qmtlWkSM?si=6eBjhRbrrdVPV2N1&amp;t=575" rel="noopener">posted on September 9</a> and featured Reed, Melton, Council and Detroit Pistons players Marcus Sasser and Stanley Umude going up against a team of five Pistons: Cade Cunningham, Ausar Thompson, Jaden Ivey, Isaiah Stewart and Jalen Duren.</li><li>Game 6 was <a href="https://youtu.be/YcK4wCKOvpo?si=eP9oXz2SZclJAQvP&amp;t=278" rel="noopener">posted on September 16</a> and featured Springer, Melton, Smith, Bamba and Reed against a team with Looney, Barnes and Mitchell.</li><li>Game 7 was posted <a href="https://youtu.be/YcK4wCKOvpo?si=LJkyONXJHrAaKDr9&amp;t=449" rel="noopener">on the same day</a> and featured the same Sixers playing a team with Powell, Jarred Vanderbilt and old friend Charles Bassey.</li></ul><p>With what little footage we have of (some of) the Sixers playing basketball, let’s dig in.</p><h2><b>Paul Reed</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Sixers-Daryl-Morey-Paul-Reed.jpeg"></figure><p>With the backup center spot firmly his until further notice, Reed can feel more comfortable leaning into his unique style of play rather than away from it. But with a potential new role coming his way, he also has to expand his game.</p><p>Nick Nurse’s commitment to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-nick-nurse-two-way-game-plan-for-joel-embiid-will-thrill-fans" rel="noopener">trying out a Reed-Joel Embiid frontcourt</a> this season means that the evolution of Reed’s jump shot is extra important. His ability to shoot the deep ball has not translated from the G League, where he made 47 of his 110 attempts over 26 games, to the pros, where he has attempted only 20 three-pointers in 133 games (making three of them).</p><p>Reed spent plenty of time working on his ability to <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1647627598451679234?s=20" rel="noopener">shoot while moving off the catch</a> in workouts and in the Rico Hines runs. In a clip from Game 4, Reed beautifully converted his backpedal after screening into a smooth jumper that cut his team’s deficit to two. He showed confidence in letting it fly, even with a defender in close proximity. On one possession in Game 3, he even squared up to the hoop and drew a hard closeout, opening the lane for him to drive for a layup.</p><p>There’s plenty of typical Bball Paul activity to be seen — skying for rebounds, tipping missed shots to himself or his teammates, deflecting passes and throwing down easy two-hand dunks. In Game 7, he recorded a pair of steal-and-score sequences. The Sixers getting more hectic energy on the court is worth the downsides that occasionally come with it.</p><p>On top of playing in the Rico Hines runs for multiple days, Reed has practiced often in the Sixers’ practice facility and popped out at <a href="https://x.com/PickSwapMedia/status/1684175029410603009?s=20" rel="noopener">a local pro-am league</a>. He’s as ready for the season to start as anyone.</p><h2>Jaden Springer</h2><p>Springer can be the reason why the Sixers’ depth remains good despite losing numerous key bench players. The third-year guard could earn playing time under Nurse with his defensive capabilities and burgeoning offensive game.</p><p>Shooting from deep is the biggest thing Springer has to work on. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-jaden-springer-drops-confident-take-on-upcoming-first-year-with-nick-nurse" rel="noopener">feels good about the work</a> he has put in so far. His jumper mechanics don’t seem to have gotten much quicker, but he took (and made) plenty of threes during the runs. While the jumper remains a work in progress, what can Springer do to be of service to the Sixers’ offense this season? At the outset of the season, it’s to be a wrecking ball in the paint and score on the interior.</p><p>Springer’s basket to win Game 1 was a work of art. On the right baseline, he jabbed toward the sideline and darted to the paint. He protected the ball from a nearby help defender, sealed off his defender with his back and finished a reverse layup, jumping across the paint but putting enough juice and spin on the shot to get it to drop.</p><p>In Game 2, he gave Dick a “welcome to the league” moment of sorts by leaving him in the dust multiple times. He scored a layup with a trigger-step hesi on one possession, deployed a quick-crossover-into-drive move and dumped it off to Reed on another and then stopped on a dime to hit him with a behind-the-back dribble that nearly made Dick hit the deck and freed himself for a two-handed stuff. It’s not quite the same as Embiid dunking on Bamba’s head in 2018, but the Raptors rookie sure got a taste of what even lightly experienced NBA guys can do.</p><p>Springer guarded a variety of players. He hunkered down against the bigger and older Barnes, matched up with newbies like Dick and Nowell, and defended fellow young guards like Hyland and Mitchell. That’s the side of the ball where there are no doubts about what he can do. Addressing the ones that exist on the other end is the key for him this season.</p><h2>De’Anthony Melton</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Melton.jpg"></figure><p>Melton performed admirably as the Sixers’ sixth man/plug-in starter last season. The latter role will be increasingly important with James Harden’s status in limbo. In the Rico Hines runs, he shot off the bounce a bunch — something that he could be doing more of this season.</p><p>While shooting off the dribble and off screens is something Melton <i>can</i> do, it’s not often something he <i>does</i>. It’s completely unsurprising given that his role was to spot up for the Sixers’ stars and have them create for him in his debut year with Philly. But with one star potentially ready to go MIA and a new coach ready to make the offense less stagnant, Melton will likely increase his output in non-stationary threes.</p><p>Buckets from Games 1 and 6 showed Melton settling into a spot on the right wing, squaring up to the hoop and swishing a shot. Adding more comfort with shots like that can help the Sixers become more diverse on offense. Another focus for Melton going into the season should be on his shots at the rim. He looked much more comfortable shooting the ball than he did attacking the rim, which also indicates his splendid shooting abilities on top of his need for improvement elsewhere.</p><p>Melton showed his nose for rebounds by beating out Stewart to tip in a miss. He stayed active on defense by intercepting and deflecting a handful of passes. Even though he’s undersized for a versatile 3-and-D player, the Sixers will once again need him to be a do-it-all type of role player.</p><h2>Terquavion Smith</h2><p>The darling of the summer Sixers keeps working on his game as he looks to prove teams wrong for leaving him undrafted in the 2023 NBA Draft.</p><p>Smith took the lead for the Sixers group in Game 7 with a double-between-the-legs move into a pull-up three. The ball went up often when the NC State product had it. In one game he played as the lone Sixer on his team, he scored three of his team’s five points off of jumpers.</p><p>While the buckets give Smith a name, it’s the little things that will earn him a chance with the Sixers. He made plays for others and stayed attentive on defense…for the most part. Again, this isn’t the environment where guys are gonna dig all the way in. Smith’s defense looked pretty good in Summer League, inspiring at least some confidence that he’ll turn out fine.</p><p>Smith allowed a bucket in Game 4 when he completely lost track of Mitchell, who cut right behind him and shot a layup that Reed tried to block but resulted in a goaltending call. His skinny frame hurt him here and there when he tried to corral his man. The effort was there just about every time, though, which is the most you can ask for in games like these from a young guard like him.</p><h2>Mo Bamba</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Sixers-Mo-Bamba-Joel-Embiid.jpeg"></figure><p>Bamba got some good work in with his new Sixers teammates ahead of training camp. For someone who has no familiarity with anyone else on the team — he and Embiid are friends, but he has yet to be on the same roster as anyone on the team — that can be pretty helpful, even if it’s just for a short pick-up game.</p><p>In his introductory Sixers presser, Bamba discussed the possibility of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-mo-bamba-details-how-he-and-joel-embiid-can-thrive-in-two-center-lineup" rel="noopener">playing in a two-big lineup</a> with Embiid. As one of the best shooters amongst seven-footers, he presents a seamless option as a stretch four. Playing alongside Reed, he looked the part. He also has the wherewithal to survey the whole floor when he’s spaced out, finding Reed on a cut with a crisp pass.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">New Sixers center Mo Bamba showing some flashes in the recent Rico Hines runs</p><p>Bamba played off Terquavion Smith really well and also looked good sharing the court with Bball Paul. His role with the Sixers shouldn’t be a huge one, though it’s tough not to get intrigued by what Nurse could do with a player of Bamba’s size and skills.</p><h2>Ricky Council IV</h2><p>Another undrafted rookie who dazzled for the summer Sixers, Council showed his bouncy athleticism with some nice dunks, including a double-clutch dunk in Game 3.</p><p>Council ran some pick-and-roll as the roller and handled the ball here and there. It was a nice mix of situations for the rookie, but he didn’t do much to stand out. One sequence from Game 1 should offer hope that Council can eventually be trusted more with the ball in his hands. He sized up his defender from the left wing, executd a left-to-right crossover and snapped a bounce pass to a cutting Smith, who converted a layup. Reading the floor that quickly and getting it right to Smith in the natural motion of his dribbling face-up was impressive.</p><p>Council getting any run he can get against NBA competition is good. Iron sharpens iron. While he is quite the athlete, he has to fine-tune his skill set before becoming playable for long stretches at the highest level.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Helping the kids with drills and taking pictures — which he did on a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CvGE1Cap0D8/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==" rel="noopener">previous stop on the tour</a> in July after the Sixers’ Summer League contests — gave him a chance to <a href="https://twitter.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1686429353746317313?s=20" rel="noopener">just have fun</a> playing basketball.</p><p>As his offseason work continues, Springer will look to be a regular in the Sixers’ rotation. He agreed with the notion that Nurse is an ideal coach for his skill set — an aggressive, multi-positional defender who leverages his athleticism into results. Springer’s assessment of his new coach suggests he could be ideal for each one of his players.</p><p>“You really see that he really tries to push his players, he really believes in his player,” Springer said of Nurse. “And he wants to teach, he wants players to learn and develop under him. So you can definitely see that, and that’s a great coach to have.”</p><p>A <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-nick-nurses-former-g-legaue-colleagues-rave-coaching-approach" rel="noopener">deep belief in his players</a> has been a staple of the atmosphere Nurse-coached teams have. It’s what makes Springer’s leap in year three seem more attainable than ever. His defense has been the standout skill that made Philly draft him with the 28th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. That’s the skill, he says, that will create the impact that puts him in contention for a bench role.</p><p>Of course, the consistent questions around Springer come down to his three-point shooting. He can impact the game in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-5-biggest-things-philly-learned-from-2023-nba-summer-league" rel="noopener">more ways than just scoring</a> but, as a supporting cast member for Joel Embiid, he’s going to have to be ready to space the floor and fire away. His Summer League performance inspired only shreds of confidence. Coupled with a 25.0-percent clip across six Summer League games was consistent confidence in letting his shot go.</p><p>“It’s coming along great,” Springer said. “[The coaching staff] has been in the gym with me every day. It’s definitely coming along. I’ve been feeling good. They’ve been feeling good about it. So, we’ll see when the season comes.”</p><p>There isn’t one specific tweak Springer is looking to make in his shot. To him, it’s simply about feeling good when the shot goes up. The Sixers will require him to bomb away from three-point land. Hesitation to let it fly that lets defenses crowd the paint will pay for his ticket to a spot deep on the bench. To him, he has to get his mindset right in order to improve.</p><p>“The main thing is confidence,” Springer said. “I shoot it great in workouts, everywhere I shoot is great. So, [it’s] really just translating to the game and being able to have the confidence to trust in my shot and trust in my work. So that’s the biggest thing.”</p><p>Even if he proves to be a legitimate shooter, Springer isn’t guaranteed to get playing time under Nurse. With the ultimate put-up-or-shut-up decree from fans staring them dead in the face, the Sixers have to compete at the highest level possible and Springer’s lack of experience works against him.</p><p>The James Harden trade-demand situation makes the Sixers’ depth chart tough to project but it will feature numerous options at the guard spots. Patrick Beverley, who Springer sees as a veteran that can help him improve, will be looking for a role off the bench along with De’Anthony Melton (unless he gets bumped to the starting lineup in the case of any Harden absence). Springer’s aptness to play bigger than his size gives him a good crack at becoming a defensive sparkplug/utilityman. But as he knows all too well, that role must be earned.</p><p>“I’m feeling good,” Springer said when asked about his mindset ahead of Sixers training camp. “Nothing’s promised. So, at the end of the day, I gotta compete and play the way I know I can play and everything will work itself out.”</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The second-year guard led the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers’ G League affiliate, to a title with a <a href="https://twitter.com/nbagleague/status/1644399687368155151?s=20" rel="noopener">phenomenal performance in the championship round</a>. His reward (aside from being named MVP of the series)? Turning right around to join the big club on a road game.</p><p>With the Sixers’ starters and top bench player all out, Springer and the rest of the reserves balled out in an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-vs-hawks-instant-breakdown-jaden-springer-shines-as-undermanned-philly-squad-steals-ot-win" rel="noopener">overtime win against the Atlanta Hawks</a>. Springer spent his first NBA start guarding Trae Young and scoring 19 points.</p><p>“Going into the game, I didn’t know what to expect,” Springer said to reporters following the Sixers’ 136-131 win. “I just knew I was gonna try, go out there, go hard and compete. The results came out like I wanted to so, we got the dub and that’s all that really matters.”</p><p>Although Young finished the night with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/hawks-news-trae-young-goes-full-john-stockton-with-epic-assist-feat-not-seen-in-33-years" rel="noopener">historic stat line</a> and baited Springer into a few fouls (eventually leading to him fouling out), Springer held his own against one of the toughest guys to cover. With Joel Embiid, James Harden and numerous other key players out, the Sixers stole an overtime win, 136-131.</p><p>Let’s break down an insane game between the Sixers and the Hawks.</p><h2>Sixers player notes:</h2><p><b>Jaden Springer: 19 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 8-13 FG shooting</b></p><p>What a week it has been for Springer. After winning the G League Finals MVP award and leading the Delaware Blue Coats to its first league title yesterday, he makes his first NBA start. He looked very impressive on both sides of the ball.</p><p>He looked comfortable in the flow of the offense and wasn’t afraid to try to get his own looks, though he clearly has some work to do in order to be a go-to option on offense. His defensive abilities were put to the test against Young and he looked fine, fighting through screens to (try to) stay on his hip. Yes, he fouled out, but the amount of big plays he made overshadowed it. What a performance.</p><p><b>Paul Reed: 10 points, 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals, 4-6 FG shooting</b></p><p>Reed got the start and got the game started with a typical Bball Paul play: a putback following an offensive board. But he also committed three fouls in his first seven minutes. He stayed solid and had a fine game. I don’t know how much stock Doc Rivers and the coaching staff put into this game but he missed the chance to run even further away with the backup center spot.</p><p><b>Jalen McDaniels: 24 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 8-17 FG shooting</b></p><p>McDaniels looked perfectly comfortable playing in foreign lineups, finding his spots and hitting almost every shot he let fly. He tied his career-high with 18 points in a half. The Sixers need him to be a solid shooter in the postseason and he’s ending the season looking like just that.</p><p><b>Danuel House Jr.: 22 points, 1 rebound, 3 assists, 6-11 shooting</b></p><p>House entered drive mode in this one, looking to score in the paint and drawing an impressive amount of fouls while shooting 9-10 from the charity stripe.</p><p><b>Shake Milton: 15 points, 4 rebounds, 16 assists, 7-22 shooting</b></p><p>Milton’s shooting was poor but he blew way past his previous career-high in assists, providing a steady presence in the offense.</p><h2>Hawks player notes:</h2><p><b>Trae Young: 27 points, 3 rebounds, 20 assists, 4 steals, 7-14 FG shooting</b></p><p>Young ran circles around the Sixers defense, orchestrating the Hawks offense with gusto and dropping dimes like he had holes in his pockets on his way to a new career-high. He zipped around the court with ease, was automatic from the free-throw line and made a few solid defensive plays that led to points for his side.</p><p><b>Dejounte Murray: 19 points, 1 rebound, 4 assists, 9-16 FG shooting</b></p><p>Shake Milton did not have a very fun time while being guarded mostly by Murray, who looked too pumped up for a game of this caliber. Nonetheless, he created turnovers and was one of the Hawks’ key scorers opposite of Young,</p><h2>Game recap:</h2><p><b>1st half</b></p><p>With the Sixers <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-james-harden-tyrese-maxey-among-many-philly-players-to-join-joel-embiid-on-injury-report-vs-hawks" rel="noopener">resting their six key players</a>, the starting lineup for this one consisted of Springer, Milton, McDaniels, Georges Niang and Paul Reed — a lineup that had not seen the floor for even a single prior minute of the season. Mac McClung was also made available to play. Meanwhile, the Hawks came into the game needing a win to lock up the eighth seed.</p><p>Springer matched up with Young but the Sixers switched on defense, which led to the Hawks targeting Niang in pick-and-rolls. Young dished the ball around against a unit learning how to play together on the fly, leading to five assists in a 12-4 run during the opening five minutes.</p><p>The Sixers found success on offense by getting downhill and scoring at the rim. They also made four of their first six attempts from deep while McDaniels scored nine points without missing a shot. Doc Rivers said he’s probably the best cutter on the team last night and he proved him right with a few nice buckets off of <a href="https://twitter.com/sixers/status/1644492620247232517?s=20" rel="noopener">cuts to the hoop</a>.</p><p>McClung came into the game, making his Sixers debut in what he hopes is the first step of his journey to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sixers-news-mac-mcclung-vocal-on-harsh-reality-of-waiting-his-turn-for-true-nba-shot" rel="noopener">being an NBA rotation player</a> in the near future. He didn’t do much at first but the Sixers still played well. They couldn’t corral Young but they did a good job of kicking the ball out, driving right away and then getting the ball to someone in a position to score.</p><p>Once Young started pushing the pace, their lack of defensive chemistry showed. Montrezl Harrell got the Sixers on the right track after a 21-2 Atlanta run with three putback buckets but, obviously, any run these Sixers went on was going to get a response from Young and the fully healthy Hawks.</p><p>At the half, the Sixers trailed 63-53.</p><p><b>2nd half</b></p><p>Each side traded buckets to start the second half. Springer pulled up for a nice jumper right in front of the nail and slid his feet to stay with Young, though he did end up committing a few fouls against one of the most notorious foul hunters in the NBA. The Sixers stuck with it thanks to Milton’s ability to get to the paint and make plays.</p><p>The Sixers cut the deficit to six, putting themselves in position to tie things up with Young on the bench. McClung hit a three to cut it to two and then, after two quick Atlanta buckets, drove right to the paint in the fast break, drawing a foul from Saddiq Bey and hitting free throws to make it a four-point game heading into the final frame.</p><p>Elsewhere in the league, the Miami Heat lost to the Washington Wizards, setting up a Sixers-Nets matchup for the first round (and locking the Hawks into the eighth seed). Ben Simmons is out for the season and won’t be playing a part in it. However, Mikal Bridges will. This is certainly a matchup he is <a href="https://twitter.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1624529530437214211?s=20" rel="noopener">looking forward to</a>.</p><p>Back in the Sixers and Hawks’ matchup, Springer stepped up to the moment down the stretch. The man of the hour hit a three, notched a steal and assisted House on a dunk to make it a two-point game again. Later, he took it right at Young for the game-tying bucket on a floater and, after Young put Atlanta back ahead, threw down a putback slam to tie it back up. He held Young off long enough to force a shot-clock violation on the Hawks’ final fourth-quarter possession, leading to overtime.</p><p>McDaniels put the Sixers ahead to start OT but winced with pain as he grabbed at his midsection. He remained in the game as Milton diced up the defense. Springer made a poor decision to swipe at a driving Young, giving him an and-one to make it a two-point game with 49 seconds left.</p><p>After a rookie mistake, Springer pump faked after getting a pass in the paint, showing impressive composure that led to foul shots. He made just one and then fouled out on a drive from Young, who also only took one freebie. Niang iced the game with a step-back triple, bringing his total on the night to 24 points, tying his career-high.</p><h2>Random thoughts:</h2><ul><li>Yes, this was just one game, but the Hawks have certainly taken a steep fall from grace after upsetting the Sixers in the 2021 playoffs.</li></ul><p>The Sixers will close their regular season out with a Sunday afternoon matchup against the Brooklyn Nets.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
