The California native is sure to make waves in 2023-24.</p><p>Listed at 6-foot-7 and 225 pounds, Jaquez is an aggressive and unpredictable on-ball playmaker whose confidence enhances his impact on the basketball court because he’s often sharp, and even when he’s not sharp he’s still decisive. Heat fans specifically would get their first taste of what Jaquez can bring at the start of 2023 NBA Summer League in the California Classic.</p><p>Dropping 22 points in his debut while dazzling his home state fans, Jaquez might have even been a little more assertive as a scorer than usual. Nonetheless, with his steady development and an increased responsibilities leading to averages of 17.8 points per game in his senior season, his combination of footwork, shooting touch and craftiness should translate against a higher level of competition.</p><p>To that point, JJJ could get every opportunity to prove himself by the end of the season.</p><p>In the offseason, the Heat either lost or removed multiple players that were key parts of their backcourt rotation at some point or another in guard Gabe Vincent (signed with the Los Angeles Lakers), guard Vincent Oladipo (traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder) and wing Max Strus (signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers).</p><p>Furthermore, though Miami is the presumptive favorite to land Portland Trail Blazers star guard Damian Lillard after he requested a trade, it would come at the expense of at least one more key more perimeter player in Tyler Herro. That’s not to say Kyle Lowry, a veteran that may be on the precipice of serious decline, wouldn’t be included in a trade package for Lillard himself.</p><h2>Can he start from Day 1?</h2><p>With the number of players that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/10-greatest-heat-franchise-history-ranked" rel="noopener">the Miami Heat</a> lost from their perimeter rotation from last year — not to mention the stalemate that they’ve reached with the Portland Trail Blazers in regard to a Damian Lillard trade — Jaime Jaquez Jr. appears to be in prime position to land a spot in the regular season rotation with the Heat in as a rookie.</p><p>Of course, nothing with be given to him. The Heat have a tough and competitive culture that will require JJJ to prove that he deserves every minute he plays, regardless of injuries, trades or any other circumstance. To that point, expect veterans like wing Josh Richardson and forward Caleb Martin to battle hard for their playing time in training camp and beyond.</p><p>However, Jaquez is a purer — more versatile — scorer than either Richardson or Martin, giving him the opportunity to not just carve out steady minutes in the Heat’s rotation but a more important role than them. For a team that struggled to generate consistent on-ball offense outside of Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo during the 2023 NBA Playoffs because they lacked for shot-creators, even the return of Tyler Herro or arrival of Lillard can’t erase all their concerns.</p><p>Especially if the Heat find themselves being visited by the injury bug again next season; an issue that reared its ugly head throughout the 2023 NBA Playoffs.</p><p>Jaquez could also find himself in the starting lineup, especially if the Heat complete their trade for Lillard and Herro finds himself in Portland or elsewhere. His consistency from 3 might be what swings it all for him, be it in his favor or a teammate’s, but if Jaquez gets the minutes and the role he could make a surprising run for the 2024 Rookie of the Year award.</p><h2>Steep competition?</h2><p>Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s competition could be steep, as San Antonio Spurs power forward Victor Wembanyama could start from Day 1 and put up the numbers to boot due to his affinity for 3-point shots.</p><p>However, that might be where the buck stops, and even Wembanyama might find himself behind Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell as offensive options with where they each are in their development.</p><p>Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller — the No. 3 pick — could also find himself making a solid impact, though the presence of LaMelo Ball, Terry Rozier, Miles Bridges and Gordon Hayward puts a damper on his potential impact. Portland Trail Blazers guard Scoot Henderson — the No. 2 pick — will only definitively be behind veteran forward Jerami Grant in the pecking order next season depending on how the Damian Lillard trade shapes out.</p><p>However, from Tyler Herro (if he should land in Portland) to Anfernee Simons and Shaedon Sharpe, he’ll have to do plenty of sharing too.</p><p>Jaquez, playing with three volume scorers himself in Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo and Herro or Lillard, won’t have the lion’s share of shot attempts with the Heat by any means. Nonetheless, he could have just as much of a chance to make an impact as anyone.</p><p>Given his two-way upside he could have an impact that’s unexpectedly high. High enough to win the Rookie of the Year award in a race that would be the most surprising since former 36th overall pick Malcolm Brogdon <a href="https://www.nba.com/bucks/malcolm-brogdon-wins-nba-rookie-year" rel="noopener">won the award in 2017</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Jaquez led all scorers with 22 points, including three 3-pointers and one of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e6vH8LhU_ns&amp;ab_channel=NBA" rel="noopener">best poster dunks</a> seen all summer in Las Vegas.</p><p>Jaquez Jr. looked out of place — in a good way — in his lone performance in summer league. Whether he was on the ball or off it, Jaquez looked comfortable and played at a smooth and controlled pace. Perhaps that should be expected after four years of seasoning at UCLA, but it was plenty encouraging for Miami to see Jaquez, the 18th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, play with such poise and control in an environment that rarely allows for that.</p><p>So what could the Heat possibly be concerned about after Jaquez’s excellent showing?</p><h2>The Heat’s biggest concern about Jaime Jaquez Jr. after 2023 NBA Summer League is that trade partners will want him included in any deal.</h2><p>Jaquez might have been a little <i>too</i> good in Las Vegas. While NBA executives aren’t likely to let a single Summer League game sway them one way or another, Jaquez displaying all the chops that made him such an obvious “<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-draft-news-jamie-jaquez-heat-fans-approval" rel="noopener">Heat culture</a>” draft pick should be setting off alarm bells for any team entering trade negotiations with Miami. Heat executives are having a tough time downplaying <a href="https://www.sun-sentinel.com/2023/07/15/even-with-just-a-sneak-peek-at-summer-league-heat-confident-jaime-jaquez-jr-our-type-of-guy/" rel="noopener">how much they love</a> Jaquez already, as Miami GM Andy Elisburg told Ira Winderman of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.</p><p>“I think he’s our type of guy,” Elisburg said. “I think he comes from the same kind of ethos that we think we value, with players that we value. He has that kind of competitiveness and the work ethic that you want to see.</p><p>“But I think he also has an understanding of the game of basketball. I think we have a certain type of player that we like and a certain type of player we wanted to get, and I think he brings a lot of those kinds of things. And you’re looking for people who fit what it is you do, and he fits really what we do.”</p><p>After an incredible run to the NBA Finals with multiple undrafted players carrying so much of the load, everyone is going to be paying attention to Miami’s moves within the margins.</p><p>Yes, that includes the Portland Trail Blazers.</p><p>Jaquez will be available for trade after July 31st, which could re-spark negotiations between the two teams. If the Blazers do pull the trigger on granting Damian Lillard his wish and sending him to South Beach to team up alongside Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo, it would be front-office malpractice not to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-jaime-jaquez-jr-breaks-silence-on-involvement-damian-lillard-trade-rumors" rel="noopener">get Jaquez back</a> in any deal. If Jaquez’s perimeter shooting (32.8 career 3-point percentage at UCLA) catches up to the rest of his game, he’ll be a plug-and-play guy right away for a rebuilding team.</p><p>If he stays in Miami, Jaquez still might push for a sizable role. After losing Max Strus to the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason, minutes may be available on the wing if Jaquez proves himself to be a better fit than journeyman wing Josh Richardson.</p><p>Jaquez still needs to develop a true calling card offensively to fit in with Miami’s starters, but there’s enough playmaking juice and mid-post skills to have the Heat use him as a value version of Butler with the second unit.</p><p>Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s Summer League performance reinforced what led Miami to draft him in the first place. But if the rest of the league is paying attention, they’ll try to pry Jaquez away as Pat Riley and Miami go hunting for a superstar once again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Things happen. This is a business. It is what it is, but I’m trying to stay positive right here. My focus is the Miami heat. I’m just putting all my focus there.”</p><p>Jaquez Jr. is in the middle of participating in the NBA Summer League with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-heat-move-2023-nba-free-agency" rel="noopener">Heat</a>. He played his college ball at the UCLA basketball program. He was a part of the incredible game in the NCAA Tournament between UCLA basketball and Gonzaga basketball, that UCLA ended up losing on a long three-point shot by Julian Strawther. Jaquez Jr. was a key part of UCLA’s success in college, and he could be a good young piece in the NBA, whether that be with the Heat or with the Trail Blazers as a result of being involved in a trade for Damian Lillard.</p><p>It is unknown whether or not Lillard will be traded to the Heat, as the Trail Blazers said they are “open for business” regarding a potential trade.</p><p>Lillard’s camp is doing everything it can to help him end up in Miami, telling other teams that if they trade for him, they will be getting an unhappy player. Jacquez and Jovic have been Miami’s most impressive players in these matchups, with their versatility and scoring instincts showing up on a nightly basis.</p><p>Jaquez, the 18th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, averaged 13.0 points (on 42.9 percent shooting from the field and 44.4 percent shooting from 3) in 18.8 minutes per game in the California Classic. Having <a href="https://twitter.com/IraHeatBeat/status/1678126408089088000?s=20" rel="noopener">undergone an MRI on his shoulder</a> after sustaining the injury during Wednesday’s loss to the Sacramento Kings, per Winderman, the 22-year-old is <a href="https://twitter.com/Anthony_Chiang/status/1677406573239603201" rel="noopener">currently listed as day-to-day</a> (h/t Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald).</p><p>However, where the skilled and gritty Jaquez is hoping to make it back to Summer League at all, Jovic has an outlook that’s a bit more positive as <a href="https://twitter.com/IraHeatBeat/status/1678126745688625153" rel="noopener">he hopes to play against</a> the Phoenix Suns on Monday.</p><p>Jovic, still just 20 years old, was the 27th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Standing tall at 6-foot-11, Jovic has a guard-like skillset and mobility that’s currently en vogue around the league, and understandable so.</p><p>Jovic has averaged 19.0 point, 5.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.0 steal per game so far this summer, shooting 47.1 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from 3.
