He was thriving with the Chicago Bulls and even found his way to become the youngest Most Valuable Player in league history. However, injuries derailed him from being able to play to his full potential. He then made his way to a lot of teams and has now <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-ja-morants-game-draws-derrick-rose-comparison-from-joakim-noah">ended up with the Memphis Grizzlies.</a> Up until now, legends about the great things he did on the court have been surfacing throughout league history. Indiana Pacers’ James Johnson may have just added to the plethora of stories about the all-time great.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-jalen-brunson-derrick-rose-injury-tom-thibodeau-negative-reputation">Derrick Rose was thought of</a> as a very serious guy. He did not show emotions during his All-Star introductions and was just ready to jump over someone if it meant that he would get a and-one opportunity. However, James Johnson posits that the youngest MVP in league history was not too serious. In fact, the Bulls legend was<a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1835173947035598977" rel="noopener"> actually fairly funny.</a></p><p>“He was very quiet until you met him and started rocking with him. One of the funniest guys ever. Just being a rookie and knowing that I’m about to watch the best player in the league at that time. The things that he was doing were so incredible, that was the year before his MVP year. His MVP year, he picked up where he left off,” the Pacers enforcer said, via The OGs Show.</p><h2><b>Derrick Rose’s time with the Bulls</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Derrick-Rose.jpg"><figcaption>© Petre Thomas-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>There truly is not a blink-or-you-miss-it moment in the NBA greater than Derrick Rose, maybe Brandon Roy rivals it. At the peak of his powers, the Bulls may have very well been considered a title contender just because of how gifted Rose was. In his MVP year, he managed to rack up 25 points while shooting with a 44.5% clip from all three levels of scoring. He also dropped 7.7 rebounds while stealing the ball at least once per game.</p><p>Now, he is off to mentor Ja Morant and the young guns in the Grizzlies system. Teague, who played alongside veteran forward James Johnson for two years at Wake Forest, recounted the experience of knowing not to cross him.</p><p>During the podcast, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-why-draymond-green-still-holds-grudge-with-jeff-teague-brother">Teague and Green discussed</a> James Johnson, known for being an enforcer in the NBA, his black belt in karate and his practice of kickboxing and mixed martial arts.</p><p>Green initiated the conversation stating, “Speaking of James Johnson, probably the most feared man in the NBA,” to which Jeff Teague immediately chimed in, “I’ve seen him knock out three dudes at one time, and I’ve seen him knock out a seven-footer.”</p><p>Johnson was the subject of a story Teague shared from their college days, highlighting his scary presence and reputation.</p><p>“His whole family, black belts. He got videos of his dad beating his legs with like wood, but they got their feet up like six inches. So when you see James’ legs it’s massive,” Teague said.</p><h2><b>James Johnson had Jeff Teague’s back when they were in college</b></h2><p>Although Johnson hasn’t achieved notable milestones in the NBA aside from a lengthy 15-season career, he is widely respected and rarely challenged. Many are unaware of his martial arts prowess, which includes disciplined and dedicated practice.</p><p>“Our freshman year, (football players) kept calling me Mike Conley when I came to Wake Forest. He was like, ‘You call him Mike Conley again, I’m gonna knock you out.’ But nobody know that he had this kickboxing resume. One of the coaches like, ‘Aye, bro. Leave him alone. He not who y’all think he is,” Teague recalled.</p><p>At just 18 years old, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/james-johnson-thinks-he-could-beat-ufc-jon-jones-in-a-fight">Johnson won his first martial</a> arts fight in an impressive 97 seconds. He has also competed in MMA across three states, maintaining an undefeated record. Aware of Johnson’s formidable fighting skills, Teague was glad to have him as a <a href="https://www.twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1814015797020459176" rel="noopener">teammate during their college days</a>.</p><p>“And the coaches start telling him, ‘He a kickboxer.’ We didn’t know either so we had a meeting. This dude had a kickboxing match set up. The coach has to sit us down and tell us, ‘Yo, are you gonna be a kickboxer or a basketball player?’ He like, ‘I need some money.’ Oh, you’re about to go fight? For money? Oh, hell no. Throughout his 15-season career, he has played for 10 different teams. At 37, he is now a free agent.</p><p>Despite lacking the accolades typically used to judge players, Green and Teague respect the NBA journeyman. He mainly specializes in MMA, NBA, boxing, soccer and tennis.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">MMA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Former NBA forward <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nets-news-james-johnson-joins-kevin-durant-brooklyn-on-one-year-deal" rel="noopener">James Johnson</a> believes he could defeat UFC heavyweight champion <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/im-over-the-hill-jon-jones-real-athletic-mortality-amid-ufc-295-stipe-miocic-fight" rel="noopener">Jon Jones</a> in a fight.</p><p>The 2009 first round pick made the extremely bold claim while appearing on the NBA Rookie Life podcast where he went on to state that with <a href="https://www.si.com/fannation/mma/news/nba-vet-james-johnson-ill-beat-ufc-champ-jon-jones-with-1-year-of-training" rel="noopener">a year of training</a>, he’d emerge victorious over Jones.</p><p>“I rock with [Jon] Jones,” Johnson said (via SI). “…I would need a year [to go up against Jones]. My standup game is great but what we all know with Jones is he’s a collegiate wrestler… really good on the ground and that’s not my forte.</p><p>“I can get on the ground. …To his level? I’m not there yet I’d definitely need a year to work on counters and defenses against it so that we can stay on our feet.”</p><p>Johnson is seemingly backing his experience in fighting growing up as well as his physical attributes being 6’7”. He’s also a few months older than Jones.</p><p>“I could beat [Jon Jones] for real,” he added. “With a year of training defense, I just need ground defense. … He started learning how to use your hands and your feet what? After college? I’ve been punching and kicking since I was five, six years old.</p><p>” … He has a big advantage there [on the ground] but as long as I can keep him from going on the floor… I win.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">"I could beat [Jon Jones] for real. However, at the same time, his combat experience isn’t really documented anywhere.</p><p>But that said, even if he does have some legitimate combat experience, it’s extremely bold and delusional to feel he can defeat Jones in a fight with just a year of training.</p><p>Jones is regarded as the greatest MMA fighter of all time and is yet to suffer a true defeat inside the octagon with his only loss coming as a result of a disqualification.</p><p>Granted, “Bones” does tend to struggle at times against fighters who are close to his height and frame, but he’s still emerged victorious every time and those are against fighters training and competing for multiple years at the highest level.</p><p>Safe to say, take Johnson’s comments with a massive grain of salt.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Ahead of the March trade deadline, the Mavs sent the 34-year-old to the Pels in the JJ Redick deal.</p><p>In 51 games between both organizations, Johnson averaged 7.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per night. While he’s not a huge offensive weapon, Johnson brings a veteran presence and stout defense to the Nets. He gives Brooklyn frontcourt depth and is a physical presence in the paint who takes pride in stopping bigs.</p><p>The Nets don’t need much more pieces with a superstar trio already in place, but it’s nice to see them bringing in role players to complement the Big 3. An NBA title is a very realistic possibility again next season if KD, Harden, and Irving can stay healthy because that was their kryptonite in 2020/21.</p><p>It will be interesting to see if Brooklyn adds any more players to the fold by the end of the week.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Johnson was fined $40,000 for sparking the incident with a headbutt. Martin was fined $25,000, and his twin brother, Caleb, was fined $20,000.</p><p>Dudley thinks the dollar amount is excessive. The 35-year-old questioned whether the financial penalty should really be that steep when no punches were thrown. As Dudley points out, it was mostly pushing and shoving, though the situation might have escalated further:</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">I know NBA players make a lot of money but getting fined 40k and 25k with no punches being thrown is crazy.. Meanwhile, Martin was fined for a retaliatory act and making contact with an official, per <a href="https://www.thescore.com/news/2082219">theScore</a>:</p><blockquote>The league slapped Johnson with a $40,000 fine for “deliberately pushing Cody Martin out of bounds, aggressively confronting him, and imitating the incident,” according to a statement. The 14-year veteran received a technical foul for his role in the confrontation and was ejected from the game.Cody Martin also received a technical and was ejected for “pushing Johnson in retaliation and making contact with a game official,” the league’s statement read. He was packaged along with two picks in exchange for Minnesota’s 17th pick. Johnson now joins the trade for monetary purposes to successfully complete the deal. Minnesota was likely to part ways with Johnson, seeing as how his salary was never on par with his actual performances.</p><p>For Oklahoma City, absorbing Johnson’s $15 million was a minor toppling in their quest of obtaining a surplus of first-round draft picks, in which they’ve been successful so far. Going into Wednesday night, they’d obtained 17 first-round picks through 2026, all of which they’ll end up not likely using in the future.</p><p>Minnesota has been on the move for obtaining win-now talent as described by multiple reports in efforts to keep both Karl-Anthony and D’Angelo Russell satisfied as their new duo. Both players have expressed a strong desire to contend immediately, and the Timberwolves front office has been diligent in those efforts to bring in reasonable, high-caliber players to support the two stars.</p><p>The Timberwolves still have a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/malik-beasley-3-ideal-landing-spots-for-talent-in-nba-free-agency/">few more decisions</a> to make with players such as Malik Beasley, who could bode well for their future endeavors in a championship run. I got exactly what I needed; I got exactly what I needed to hear. Hopefully I can put it all behind me after this.”</blockquote><p>Johnson put up 7.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for the Heat last season. He shot 43.3 percent overall and 33.6 percent from the 3-point line in 55 games.</p><p>Johnson will make $15.1 million with Miami this season. He has a player-option worth $15.8 million for next season.</p><p>The Heat missed the playoffs last year. However, after acquiring four-time All-Star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/Jimmy-Butler/96180816">Jimmy Butler</a> in a sign-and-trade deal with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/philadelphia-76ers">Philadelphia 76ers</a> this summer, Miami intends to get back to the postseason.</p><p>For that to happen, though, Johnson will have to play his role to a tee. He re-signed with Miami in July of the following year.</p><p>In 55 appearances with the Heat last regular season, Johnson turned in averages of <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/johnsja01.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">7.8 points</a> on 43.3 percent shooting from the field (33.6 percent from beyond the arc), 3.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 21.2 minutes per outing.</p><p>The fact that Johnson is being held out due to conditioning is a bit strange, as Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra recently praised his work ethic:</p><blockquote>“He’s been very serious about his work this summer,” <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article235337287.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">Spoelstra told The Miami Herald</a> earlier this week, referring to Johnson. “You can see it in our conditioning day. He did a great job with that. He’s a unique two-way player in his ability to guard one through five when he’s healthy and facilitate and make other players better from a hybrid frontcourt position is unique.”</blockquote><p>It’s not clear how much playing time Johnson will see when is he ready to go, as the Heat already have Kelly Olynyk and Derrick Jones Jr. on the roster. In the end, it seems Johnson will be competing for minutes.</p><p>Miami finished the 2018-19 regular season with a 39-43 overall record, which left the team out of playoff contention.
