An NBA Finals run was enough for the franchise to go all-in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-klay-thompson-sends-warning-to-nba-after-joining-dallas">adding Klay Thompson</a> to a roster already led by Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. Part of sustaining that success is hitting on NBA Draft picks. Unfortunately, acting head coach Jared Dudley had to explain why the team is ‘down’ on Olivier-Maxence Prosper after a few NBA Summer League games.</p><p>Proper, known as O-Max, is pushing for a rotational spot on the varsity next season. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-olivier-maxence-prosper-2024-nba-summer-league">Mavericks have yet to see</a> the consistency that would convince the front office it is a worthwhile risk. The 22-year-old was average at best in limited NBA minutes last season and has struggled so far in Las Vegas. That’s not what the Mavericks were hoping for after making the summer All About O-Max <a href="https://www.mavs.com/prosperhopestomakerotation/" rel="noopener">according to the team’s webpage.</a></p><p>When <a href="https://twitter.com/DoingItDodson/status/1813286918676967905" rel="noopener">asked to clarify</a> by ClutchPoints, Dudley expanded on an earlier comment about the Mavericks being “down” on Prosper’s performances and development so far.</p><p>“When I say ‘a little down’ it’s because overall you want to be able to be a little bit more consistent” Dudley shared. “He didn’t play bad. Look at his numbers. He shot well from the field and stuff like that but overall we can see (where to improve).”</p><p>“His game needs to attack the basket and get to the free-throw line. He is playing hard, as hard as anybody else. He’s just got to breathe and slow down” coach continued. “We have the bar high for O-Max. We want him to be successful. It is my job to point out his deficiencies, encourage him, and find out how I can put him in the right position to be more successful.”</p><h2><b>Mavericks being patient with O-Max Prosper</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/O-Max-Prosper-with-a-highlight-block.jpg"><figcaption>Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Prosper was 2-10 from the floor and 0-3 from beyond the arc in the Summer League opener. Two steals were negated by two turnovers. He also had six rebounds, an assist, and a block in 28 minutes. The Mavericks need more from their 2023 first-round pick, but it might require a less-is-more approach to the fancy stuff and free-wheeling three-pointers.</p><p>“I’m trying to help him, coaching when he is out there that it is the fundamentals,” Dudley replied. “You saw the ATO (after time out), they threw it into the post and had a split action. He is supposed to get to the body and curl then switch. They backdoored. It’s the little stuff like being at the nail, being the low man.”</p><p>There are some encouraging signs and the team is allowing for a few uncomfortable adjustments. The level of play, both in opponent and teammate, matters. Doncic and Irving are very demanding but do put others in positions to succeed. So, it is no longer questionable that he can do the same alongside Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic. Jared Dudley posits that he could be the Mavs’ missing piece.</p><p>The Mavericks had a hard time last season in terms of finding reliable shooters on the perimeter. They might have been able to patch that up with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-grant-williams-reveals-harsh-celtics-reality-before-trade" rel="noopener">the acquisition of Grant Williams</a> in their roster. His scoring efficiency was more than serviceable in the Celtics’ 2022-23 campaign. He shot 39.5% from beyond the arc. His three-level scoring was also on display with a 45.4% field goal percentage.</p><p>All these scoring and defensive performances give the Mavs a stable presence that they can rely on. Jared Dudley outlined why Luka Doncic could use Williams’ help <a href="https://www.mavs.com/grant-williams-weighs-in/" rel="noopener">in and out of the court</a>, via Eddie Sefko of the Mavs.</p><p>“Grant Williams provides personality. He’s good for the locker room. He provides elite three-point shooting. He’s (able to) guard guys. He’s going to be a major part of our team and our success this year,” the NBA Summer League coach said.</p><p>Dallas has a lot to figure out before they get another shot at the Western Conference Final title and an NBA Finals appearance. He has won a basketball, a baseball, and a football championship in fantasy all within a year.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Jaden Hardy is coming off a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-kyrie-irving-126-million-dallas-return-draws-strong-response-from-jaden-hardy" rel="noopener">promising rookie campaign</a> in the NBA, and based on what the Mavs are seeing this offseason, he should turn even more heads in his second year in the league.</p><p>Mavs assistant coach Jared Dudley can attest to that <a href="https://twitter.com/CallieCaplan/status/1676283875431964673" rel="noopener">after getting blown away</a> by what Jaden Hardy showed the team during Dallas’ first summer league practice.</p><p><i> “Jaden Hardy is on a whole nother level.,”</i> Dudley said of Hardy (h/t Callie Caplan of The Dallas Morning News).</p><p>Last season, Hardy averaged 8.8 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.1 blocks in 14.8 minutes per game for the Mavs. He appeared in 48 games, including five starts, and shot 43.8 percent from the floor and 40.4 percent from behind the arc. While his numbers during his rookie season were not exceptional, he should only get better. He showed in his rookie year that he can be a steady outside shooter, so the challenge for him is to sustain his form from deep while improving on the other areas in order to become a much more reliable weapon for a Dallas team that’s looking to redeem itself.</p><p>Hardy was originally taken by the Sacramento Kings in the second round (37th overall) of the 2022 NBA Draft before they sent him to the Mavericks for a couple of future picks.</p><p>Hardy, a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-jaden-hardy-stern-message-after-setting-nba-summer-league-on-fire-with-28-point-debut" rel="noopener">product of the NBA G League Ignite</a>, will be among the Mavs players who will see action in the 2023 Summer League. Dudley’s contract with the Lakers came to an end this summer and the 36-year-old decided it was time to hang it up. Dudley opted to join the Dallas Mavericks as an assistant coach to Jason Kidd.</p><p>According to <a href="https://theathletic.com/2848702/2021/09/27/superstar-shopping-lebron-russell-westbrook-and-the-lakers-summer-of-recruiting/">The Athletic’s Bill Oram, Shams Charania, and Sam Amick</a>, the Lakers actually did their best to convince Dudley to stay. Unfortunately for them, the former Boston College standout really wanted to join the Mavs:</p><blockquote>“At the end of the season, sources said, the Lakers did have conversations with Dudley about other potential roles in the organization, including broadcasting, but ultimately he opted for a front-of-the-bench coaching position with Jason Kidd and the Dallas Mavericks.”</blockquote><p>Dudley is a fun dude, so he would have probably been a great fit as a commentator or an analyst. The report above also states that the Lakers offered him “other potential roles” but it does not sound like a coaching gig was on the table.</p><p>It is clear that this is the next step Dudley wants to take in his basketball career, which is why he jumped on the opportunity to join Jason Kidd’s coaching staff in Dallas. The prospect of mentoring a once-in-a-lifetime talent in Luka Doncic likely weighed heavily on Dudley’s decision as well.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But for now, he’s still spending his free time lurking the mean streets of Twitter.</p><p>Dudley will always look back with fondness on his two-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers. He helped the team win a title in the NBA Bubble, providing veteran leadership despite his limited minutes.</p><p>He saw his playing time even dwindle to almost nothing last season, playing only 12 games on an average of 6.8 minutes. Because of this, Dudley has been the subject of various memes on social media, chiding him for riding the bench and wasting a roster spot on the Lakers.</p><p>One Twitter page even made a “compilation” of his highlights during his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/jared-dudley/9b6308e9/stats">final stint with the Lakers</a>. That 2020 team was special for Lakers fans because of their chemistry and ability of role players to be stars in their own roles. It shouldn’t come as a surprise though as he’s widely regarded in the NBA as a smart player and a great locker room presence.</p><p>As he pointed out in his Twitter post, Dudley has played with a lot of superstars in his <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/jared-dudley/9b6308e9/stats">15-year career</a>. He suited up alongside the likes of LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal, Steve Nash, and Shaquille O’Neal. Dudley has always been a good motivational leader, so that’s something Beal could pick up from his former teammate.</p><p>It will be interesting to see how Dudley will impact Mavericks superstar Luka Doncic, who like Beal, is tasked to carry a heavy load. Doncic has had his fair share of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEEadzM5xLo">emotional flare-ups</a>, so maturity is something he could learn from Dudley.</p><p>Bradley Beal was right in saying that the one-time champion is ready. However, he won’t be wearing the jersey anymore. Of those 7 teams, the Mavs weren’t one so it will be a new team in a new city with a new role for the longtime NBA forward. And he’ll get the chance to work with superstar Luka Doncic.</p><p>As Stein notes, Dudley had been a key locker-room voice for the Lakers during his time with LA. His presence was most notably felt through that outlet and not on the court. <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/d/dudleja01.html">Dudley played in just 12 games this past season</a> for Frank Vogel and averaged 0.5 points per contest in those games. The Mavs are hoping the coaching aspect translates over.</p><p>It’s been quite the offseason for the Mavs so far. Rick Carlisle had been the coach in Dallas since 2008 but opted to move on to the Indiana Pacers after this last season. That opened the door for Kidd, who took over as head coach. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-dallas-add-former-wnba-champ-as-assistant-for-luka-doncic/">The Mavs then made waves by hiring WNBA star Kristi Toliver as an assistant coach</a>. Toliver still plays for the Los Angeles Sparks but will join the staff anyways.</p><p>Now, Dudley is joining the party as well. The Mavericks are slowly carving out a really solid coaching staff to help take Doncic’s game to the next level and to help Kidd make the transition to head coach once again.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
