Beneath the talented basketball players and genius coaches is a cold, calculated business. Players get traded at a drop of a hat, loyalty is just a word, you get it. Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt learnt that when he became part of multiple trades that sent him from the Nuggets to the Timberwolves to the Jazz, until eventually <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-nearly-acquired-malik-beasley-jarred-vanderbilt-before-jazz-traded-duo-lakers" rel="noopener">ending up on the Lakers</a>.</p><p>The common factor in two of these three trades? Weirdly enough, it’s Tim Connelly, who was the GM for two of the teams that ended up trading Jarred Vanderbilt away. In a podcast appearance on Run Your Race, the Lakers forward <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1705428059321672181" rel="noopener">commented</a> on this bizarre coincidence.</p><p>“[Timberwolves] got a new President/GM. Same one that came from [the Nuggets]… He traded me to Minnesota, then he got to Minnesota, traded me again to [the Jazz]. I’m like ‘damn.’”</p><p>Jarred Vanderbilt started his career in Denver, where he was drafted by the Nuggets in the second round of the 2018 draft. After two years, Vanderbilt was traded to the Timberwolves in a rather unassuming move. The forward built a strong career in Minnesota. After two years, he was packaged as part of Tim Connelly’s blockbuster deal that sent Rudy Gobert to Minnesota. He was then dealt by the Jazz at the trade deadline to the Lakers.</p><p>Vanderbilt was part of the Lakers’ sudden resurgence after the trade deadline. Vando’s strong defense and rebounding became a key part of LA’s resurgence in the second half of the season. It’s no surprise that LA ended up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-jarred-vanderbilt-agrees-4-year-48-million-contract-extension" rel="noopener">extending</a> Vanderbilt. While the two teams, led by all-time greats in LeBron James and Stephen Curry, respectively, traded one punch after another, it was the Lakers that came out on top in the end by sheer <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-reacts-to-massive-game-1-free-throw-disparity-vs-lakers" rel="noopener">physicality and force of will</a>.</p><p>It’s revisionist history to say that the Lakers, despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-reactions-dubs-season-ends-with-familiar-blowout-game-6-loss-to-lakers" rel="noopener">blowing out the Warriors</a> in Game 6, had an easy time against the then-reigning champions. They didn’t — especially those who had the thankless task of trying to slow down the greatest shooter of all time. Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt explained just how difficult being Curry’s primary defender is on an appearance on Theo Pinson’s Run Your Race podcast by Tidal League.</p><p>“Ran like 3 miles [in Game 2 of the 2023 Playoffs vs. Warriors], chasing Steph around. Obviously, Game 1 did a good job. Game 2, I actually got hurt in the 2nd game, I think Moses Moody fell on my leg. [But] I still got to chase [Steph]. Steph [Curry] just nonstop moving… It’s a tough task. Vanderbilt isn’t exactly a stellar offensive player, so being able to stay in front of Stephen Curry to at least give the Lakers some chance of surviving against a potential barrage from the Warriors star was imperative. And Vanderbilt was able to do just that.</p><p>Of course, stopping Curry completely is impossible. But Vanderbilt did as good a job as any, as he possesses a combination of size and speed that would at least bother the Warriors star’s line of sight and make him feel the contact as he flies around the court. This is the exact reason why the Lakers signed Vanderbilt to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-reacts-to-jarred-vanderbilt-la-contract-extension" rel="noopener">four-year, $48 million extension</a>, as he’ll be a huge defensive piece for the team for years to come.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

While he struggled during the playoffs, there’s no denying that he was a big reason why the team even made it to the postseason after a rather horrendous start to the campaign.</p><p>The 24-year-old forward averaged 7.2 points on 52.9 percent shooting, 6.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in the 26 games he played with the Lakers during the 2022-23 regular season. In the playoffs, his numbers fell to 4.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 steals as he saw his playing time decrease as well. However, his presence remains important for the Purple and Gold, as he’s arguably their second-best defender after Anthony Davis.</p><p>Vanderbilt is expected to play a crucial role again in 2023-24 as the Lakers look to return to the postseason and get past the Western Conference Finals.
