Beneath the talented basketball players and genius coaches is a cold, calculated business. Players get traded at a drop of a hat, loyalty is just a word, you get it. Los Angeles Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt learnt that when he became part of multiple trades that sent him from the Nuggets to the Timberwolves to the Jazz, until eventually <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-nearly-acquired-malik-beasley-jarred-vanderbilt-before-jazz-traded-duo-lakers" rel="noopener">ending up on the Lakers</a>.</p><p>The common factor in two of these three trades? Weirdly enough, it’s Tim Connelly, who was the GM for two of the teams that ended up trading Jarred Vanderbilt away. In a podcast appearance on Run Your Race, the Lakers forward <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPoints/status/1705428059321672181" rel="noopener">commented</a> on this bizarre coincidence.</p><p>“[Timberwolves] got a new President/GM. Same one that came from [the Nuggets]… He traded me to Minnesota, then he got to Minnesota, traded me again to [the Jazz]. I’m like ‘damn.’”</p><p>Jarred Vanderbilt started his career in Denver, where he was drafted by the Nuggets in the second round of the 2018 draft. After two years, Vanderbilt was traded to the Timberwolves in a rather unassuming move. The forward built a strong career in Minnesota. After two years, he was packaged as part of Tim Connelly’s blockbuster deal that sent Rudy Gobert to Minnesota. He was then dealt by the Jazz at the trade deadline to the Lakers.</p><p>Vanderbilt was part of the Lakers’ sudden resurgence after the trade deadline. Vando’s strong defense and rebounding became a key part of LA’s resurgence in the second half of the season. It’s no surprise that LA ended up <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-jarred-vanderbilt-agrees-4-year-48-million-contract-extension" rel="noopener">extending</a> Vanderbilt. While the two teams, led by all-time greats in LeBron James and Stephen Curry, respectively, traded one punch after another, it was the Lakers that came out on top in the end by sheer <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-reacts-to-massive-game-1-free-throw-disparity-vs-lakers" rel="noopener">physicality and force of will</a>.</p><p>It’s revisionist history to say that the Lakers, despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-reactions-dubs-season-ends-with-familiar-blowout-game-6-loss-to-lakers" rel="noopener">blowing out the Warriors</a> in Game 6, had an easy time against the then-reigning champions. They didn’t — especially those who had the thankless task of trying to slow down the greatest shooter of all time. Lakers forward Jarred Vanderbilt explained just how difficult being Curry’s primary defender is on an appearance on Theo Pinson’s Run Your Race podcast by Tidal League.</p><p>“Ran like 3 miles [in Game 2 of the 2023 Playoffs vs. Warriors], chasing Steph around. Obviously, Game 1 did a good job. Game 2, I actually got hurt in the 2nd game, I think Moses Moody fell on my leg. [But] I still got to chase [Steph]. Steph [Curry] just nonstop moving… It’s a tough task. Vanderbilt isn’t exactly a stellar offensive player, so being able to stay in front of Stephen Curry to at least give the Lakers some chance of surviving against a potential barrage from the Warriors star was imperative. And Vanderbilt was able to do just that.</p><p>Of course, stopping Curry completely is impossible. But Vanderbilt did as good a job as any, as he possesses a combination of size and speed that would at least bother the Warriors star’s line of sight and make him feel the contact as he flies around the court. While he struggled during the playoffs, there’s no denying that he was a big reason why the team even made it to the postseason after a rather horrendous start to the campaign.</p><p>The 24-year-old forward averaged 7.2 points on 52.9 percent shooting, 6.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in the 26 games he played with the Lakers during the 2022-23 regular season. In the playoffs, his numbers fell to 4.6 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 steals as he saw his playing time decrease as well. Vanderbilt, who made $4.3 million in 2023-24, became extension-eligible this week.</p><p>The Lakers already picked up Vando’s $4.7 million option for this season, so the extension begins in 2024-25. The fourth year is a player option. Because players cannot be traded for six months after signing an extension, Vando is ineligible to be dealt until next summer (the trade deadline is Feb. 8).</p><p>Vanderbilt was acquired before last season’s trade deadline from the Utah Jazz. He instantly became an integral “Swiss Army knife” defender and energy booster for Darvin Ham. In 26 regular season games for the Lakers (24 starts), Vanderbilt averaged 7.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 1.2 steals while often guarding the opponent’s best player. His <a href="https://twitter.com/michaelcorvoNBA/status/1702753832311333115" rel="noopener">1.9 Defensive Box Plus Minus</a> — which measures the difference per 100 possessions in points allowed with a player on the court versus off — was the best mark on the team. (Outside shooting and finishing are essential areas for growth.) Rui Hachimura, fresh off his $51 million extension, will likely begin the season as the third frontcourt starter, but Vanderbilt will almost certainly play a key role on a contender. Last April, The Athletic <a href="https://theathletic.com/4401349/2023/04/11/jarred-vanderbilt-lakers-dennis-rodman/" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Vanderbilt wanted to reach a long-term agreement with what he deemed a “high-caliber organization.”</p><p>For the Lakers, it’s the latest validation of Rob Pelinka’s mission to prioritize continuity coming off their midseason reconstruction. The Lakers could have risked letting Vanderbilt hit unrestricted free agency and possibly re-signing him at a slightly lower AAV — depending on his role/performance — but they opted to lock down the 24-year-old.</p><p>Vanderbilt is the fifth Lakers player to sign an extension this offseason, joining AD, Hachimura, Austin Reaves, and D’Angelo Russell. The Lakers now have AD, Hachimura, Reaves, Vando, Gabe Vincent, and rookies Jalen Hood-Schifino and Maxwell Lewis under contract through 2025-26. The contract is fully guaranteed and has a player option in the final year.</p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-grading-the-3-team-russell-westbrook-dangelo-russell-trade" rel="noopener">Lakers acquired Vanderbilt</a> from the Utah Jazz when they overhauled the roster ahead of last season’s trade deadline. The 24-year-old was part of the three-team trade that sent out Russell Westbrook and also brought D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley to Los Angeles.</p><h2><b>Jarred Vanderbilt’s time with Lakers</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Jarred-Vanderbilt-Lakers-option-contract-LeBron-James-Anthony-Davis.jpg"></figure><p>The Lakers exercised the forward’s $4.7 million team option for the 2023-24 season and has now rewarded him with a long-term deal. Vanderbilt started 24 of the 26 regular-season games with LA after the trade and 13 of the 15 playoff games, making him a key part of the rotation.</p><p>The 6-foot-9 forward saw more playing time in the regular season with the Lakers, averaging 7.2 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals in 24.0 minutes per game. That dropped to 16.5 minutes per game in the postseason, with averages of 4.6 points and 3.2 rebounds.</p><p>Vanderbilt’s lack of shooting played a role in his diminished playoff playing time, but he’s still a valuable role player who can soak up minutes in the frontcourt while bringing plenty of energy, defense and rebounding to the table. At just 24 years old, it made sense for the Lakers to want to lock up another young member of the roster, and this is a fair deal given his age and contributions.</p><h2><b>Busy Lakers offseason</b></h2><p>This is just another notable contract for Los Angeles in an offseason full of them, with Jarred Vanderbilt <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-anthony-davis-contract-extension" rel="noopener">joining Anthony Davis</a>, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and D’Angelo Russell as players getting new deals. And in February, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-grading-the-3-team-russell-westbrook-dangelo-russell-trade" rel="noopener">finally got their man</a>, acquiring Jarred Vanderbilt (along with D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley) for Russell Westbrook’s huge expiring contract.</p><p>Beyond Vanderbilt’s defensive versatility and presence on the glass, what made the 6’9 forward so valuable despite his limited offensive game was his team-friendly contract. Vanderbilt has a team option worth $4.7 million for the 2023-24 season, making it almost a no-brainer for the Lakers to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-lakers-plan-jarred-vanderbilt-amid-contract-uncertainty" rel="noopener">keep him in town</a>.</p><p>And it appears that’s exactly what the Lakers will be doing. According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, the Lakers <a href="https://twitter.com/mcten/status/1673889428509708289" rel="noopener">will be picking up</a> Jarred Vanderbilt’s option for next season. Doing so will give the Lakers another surefire rotation piece for cheap, which will be of utmost importance given Rui Hachimura and Austin Reaves’ impending huge contracts. By September 7, Vanderbilt will be eligible for a four-year contract extension worth up to $71 million.</p><p>Vanderbilt ended up starting 37 games for the Lakers (including 13 in the playoffs) following his midseason trade from the Utah Jazz, averaging 6.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in <a href="https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/vanderbilt-lakers-averages-including-playoffs" rel="noopener">41 total games</a> donning the Purple and Gold. After defying the odds by taking down the defending champs in the second round of the NBA Playoffs, there might be some folks who will argue that the Lakers have already gone far and beyond this season. That’s obviously not the mindset LeBron James has, and the same is the case for Anthony Davis. It was an opportunity for the 24-year-old to play against his former team following his mid-season trade to Hollywood, and unsurprisingly, Vanderbilt gave LA some quality minutes off the bench yet again.</p><p>Vanderbilt has been quite a revelation for the Lakers since his arrival during the NBA trade deadline as part of the D’Angelo Russell blockbuster deal. Vando is no star, but he’s been an integral part of LA’s second unit amid their recent surge.</p><p>It is worth noting that Jarred Vanderbilt currently has two more years remaining in his contract. Moreover, there is some uncertainty surrounding his future in LA given that the Lakers hold a player option on his deal for next season. At this point, though, it seems that the Lakers have already made their decision on the high-energy power forward:</p><p>“Vanderbilt has a $4.7 million team option for next season, one the Lakers <a href="https://theathletic.com/4401349/2023/04/11/jarred-vanderbilt-lakers-dennis-rodman/?access_token=68838&amp;redirected=1" rel="noopener">plan on exercising</a>. However, business is business, and Utah had to choose between a trade package centered around significant “draft equity” and one centered around a lightly protected 2027 first-round pick.</p><p>“The Pelicans were close to getting Beasley and Vanderbilt from Utah at the trade deadline, or close-ish,” Lowe tells ESPN writer Kevin Pelton on The Lowe Post.</p><p>“They had a pretty good offer on the table. It was a draft equity-based offer with a pick that maybe was not as good as the Lakers pick that they ended up trading, but pretty close, I think, from what I’ve heard.</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>“But one of the issues was – maybe the picks weren’t exactly equivalent – but then another issue was [Mike] Conley and the Jazz’s determination to get off of [Conley’s contract] and could the Pelicans figure that out somehow? And it became a little complicated.”</p><p>The Lakers have truly benefitted from the arrivals of Beasley and Vanderbilt, with the former providing them with the type of 3-point threat they’ve been looking for all season and the latter a reliable backup center with starter-level talent. The major trade they made was to reunite with former draft pick D’Angelo Russell, but other trade might have been equally important. Obviously shots weren’t falling early on for us, we were able to get out and run, crash the glass, get some steals, force some turnovers and that kind of just changed the game for us.”</p><p>Against the Mavs, Jarred Vanderbilt finished with 15 points, 17 rebounds and four steals while shooting 6-8 from the field and knocking down his only three-point shot. Also, with him making only $4.7 million next season, teams over the salary cap could still try to trade for him without giving up too much.</p><p>With that being said, here are the three best destinations for the Jazz’s Jarred Vanderbilt ahead of the 2023 NBA trade deadline.</p><h2>Philadelphia 76ers</h2><p>Based on what Jarred Vanderbilt is showing, some playoff teams could try to bring him in. One of them is the Philadelphia 76ers. They are currently 34-18 and the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. With Joel Embiid playing some of the best basketball of his career, the Sixers could be closer than ever to a trip to the Finals.</p><p>However, Philadelphia still needs to work on its depth. Embiid has already missed 10-plus games due to injuries, and the team does not have a clear backup big man. Montrezl Harrell is playing only 12.8 minutes a night and averaging 5.8 points. Paul Reed is averaging just 3.1 points in less than 10 minutes per contest.</p><p>With Vanderbilt, the Sixers would have a clear backup to Embiid. Although he plays mostly as a forward, he has shown he can be a center at times too. Vanderbilt would improve the team’s defense off the bench while not taking away shots from other players.</p><p>Philadelphia could offer some second-round picks and a salary filler to bring Vanderbilt. If that happens, the Sixers would be more prepared for the postseason as they can rest Embiid more with a quality backup.</p><h2>Portland Trail Blazers</h2><p>On the other side of the playoff picture, the Portland Trail Blazers are 26-27 and 11th in the Western Conference. As of now, they would be out of the Play-In Tournament. Because of that, they might try to improve the roster ahead of the trade deadline.</p><p>The frontcourt is an area that Portland likely needs to address. As of now, the Blazers have Drew Eubanks as the main backup big. The problem is that he has yet to play in the postseason in his career and his career-high in points per game in a season is 7.7 when he played for Portland after Damian Lillard missed a big part of the year.</p><p>Also, starter <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-jusuf-nurkic-hit-with-brutal-injury-update-ahead-of-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">Jusuf Nurkic is dealing</a> with an injury that should sideline him for weeks. Additionally, he can be a spark off the bench in a potential postseason appearance. By bringing him, Portland’s chances of making it to the playoffs, at least via the Play-In Tournament, become more realistic.</p><h2>Denver Nuggets</h2><p>Another interesting option for Vanderbilt in case of a trade is a reunion with the Denver Nuggets. The forward played with the franchise from 2018 to 2020 before being traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In Colorado, he appeared in just 19 games and spent most of his time in the G League.</p><p>Now, Vanderbilt seems to be a good fit for the Nuggets. They currently have Vlatko Cancar, DeAndre Jordan and Zeke Nnaji sharing the backup minutes to Nikola Jokic and Aaron Gordon.</p><p>Vanderbilt could get the minutes of two of them and provide some quality minutes off the bench. He would also be a better rebounding big as opposed to the trio. The Kentucky product’s 7.9 rebounds per game are the second-best mark of his career</p><p>Even though the Nuggets have one of the best records in the league at 37-17, they could still improve their roster with key and cheap moves. Vanderbilt would not be an expensive option, and he could become an important piece in the playoffs.
