Atkinson recently added to his staff by bringing in former NBA wing DeMarre Carroll, who was most recently an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers, and it just so happens that Allen and Carroll were teammates with the Brooklyn Nets in the late 2010s, a fact that Allen finds peculiar <a href="https://x.com/AmNotEvan/status/1841182600540668322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1841182600540668322%7Ctwgr%5E80c7a178341772b49b350aaffbc4a61fb1c41407%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcavaliersnation.com%2F2024%2F10%2F02%2Fjarrett-allen-admits-he-feels-a-little-weird-about-one-part-of-new-coaching-staff%2F" rel="noopener">given their current situation.</a></p><p>“Jarrett Allen shared with me that it’s a little weird that DeMarre Carroll, someone he played with a few years ago on the court, is now one of his coaches,” reported Evan Dammarell on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>In fact, not only did Allen and Carroll play together during their time with the Nets, but Atkinson was also their coach during that tenure as well. Atkinson was also an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks during their 60 win season in 2014-15, during which Carroll was the starting small forward.</p><h2><b>What can the Cavs accomplish in 2024-25?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Allen-at-media-day.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>At the current juncture, most pundits have the Cavs somewhere in the same tier as teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, and Miami Heat, a clear tier below the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference hierarchy.</p><p>Of course, not many expected that Donovan Mitchell would still be a member of the Cavs at this point in time, but the star shooting guard reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise by signing a long term extension with them this offseason.</p><p>The Cavs will be banking on the continued development of Darius Garland at the point guard position after he struggled through an injury-riddled year in 2023-24. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-jarrett-allen-redefines-his-edge-while-dominating-magic">Allen suffered a cracked rib</a> in Game 4 of the first-round playoff series. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-is-jarrett-allen-playing-game-1-vs-celtics-latest-injury-update">Allen would miss the following eight games</a> of the playoff run with an injury that became an ongoing point of contention. Fans and <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10122498-cavs-marcus-morris-id-have-played-through-jarrett-allens-injury-in-nba-playoffs" rel="noopener">even his former teammates</a> called Allen’s integrity into question. Confusing wordage and Allen being repeatedly listed as “questionable” rather than “out” led to even more speculation throughout the following months. But during Cavs Media Day, Allen finally set the record straight.</p><p>“I think that definitely contributed to the skepticism of the injury,” Allen said. “With rib injuries, you don’t understand how bad it is until you go through it — looking at the CT scan you can still see the piece of bone that’s still floating in my body, it was definitely a worse injury than people thought.”</p><p>Allen spoke about how difficult it was for him to sleep and even raise his arms above his head during the recovery process. As much as it killed him to be on the sidelines, he simply couldn’t compete at playoff intensity with his injury, no matter how others felt about it.</p><p>“I feel like I’m very sure of myself; if I was able to play, I would play,” Allen said. “It’s understandable [why people were skeptical of his injury], but it takes a lot more to get under my skin.”</p><h2><b>What else did Jarrett Allen have to say at Cavs Media Day?</b></h2><p>He also had one of the best regular seasons of his career in the 2023-24 campaign, averaging 16.5 points (a career-high), 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Allen was highly durable, playing 77 of 82 regular season games for Cleveland. He takes pride in his durability and, heading into the 2024-25 campaign, is also something Allen wants to maximize by playing all 82 games.</p><p>“I want to be able to go out there every single game, every single night, and just be with my teammates,” Allen said. “It’s a big chip on the shoulder. I want to prove that I’m still the player that I am, that I’m still going to be out there every single night trying my hardest and making an impact.”</p><p>Now that he is healthy again, that certainly could happen. It helps that Allen is reunited with old head coach Kenny Atkinson, who coached Allen while they were together in Brooklyn. Under Atkinson, the focus is on the Cavs shooting more three-pointers and playing at a faster pace. While Allen is more than comfortable playing faster basketball, he is also open to spacing the floor.</p><h2><b>Is Jarrett Allen from deep going to be a thing for the Cavs?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Jarrett-Allen-Cavs-Media-Day.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>“Every year, the talk is always about J.A. shooting more threes,” Allen said, flashing his iconic smile. “But, hopefully, we can finally make that happen.”</p><p>Whether or not Allen is joking remains to be seen. But, after re-signing with Cleveland on a three-year, $91 million maximum extension, he’s here not just for a long time. He’s here for a good time, too.</p><p>“I like it here,” Allen said. “I like the city and I like the people here. It’s easy to say in front of everybody just to hype everybody up, but I truly do genuinely like it here. I believe in it here. I’ve put in three and a half years to try to see this team succeed. While a lot of Cavs fans still think that a departure should be imminent, a known insider posits that no moves around the big man would occur.</p><p>Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com noted that <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-jarrett-allen-wants-evan-mobley-shooting-more-threes">Jarrett Allen is the most indispensable player</a> in the Cavs rotation. Despite the changes from JB Bickerstaff to Kenny Atkinson, the big man will still be a staple in their squad alongside Evan Mobley, Donovan Mitchell, and Darius Garland. All of it is for good reason. The Cavs insider explained why <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-l7ObPf4_k&amp;ab_channel=ClevelandCavaliersoncleveland.com" rel="noopener">in his latest appearance</a> on the Wine and Gold Talk podcast.</p><p>“What people tend to say in this organization is that Jarrett’s the most indispensable player that they have. They just cannot function at the same high level offensively and defensively without Jarrett and the numbers bear that out. They are a different team at both ends of the floor when he is not healthy. This is largely because, despite some schematic limitations with him and Mobley, he still produces at a high level. He averages 16.5 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest.</p><p>“People inside this organization feel like the rebuild finally changed the minute that they traded for Jarrett. They felt like that gave them an identity. That gave them a centerpiece and gave them another building block. That gave them a defensive presence. It gave them the right piece to put around Darius Garland,” he added.</p><p>The Cavs have now found a squad that can contend for postseason success post-LeBron James. With Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Allen, they have a huge window to win an NBA Championship. When one adds in Kenny Atkinson’s good mastery of defensive schemes and proper rotations, they could very well be title contenders within the next half-decade. He can also be found three to five times weekly on Locked On Cavs, a part of the Locked On Podcast Network.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Cleveland Cavaliers big man <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-jarrett-allen-cavs-future-secure-amid-trade-rumors">Jarrett Allen is expecte</a>d to continue garnering trade interest around the NBA, even after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-jarrett-allen-cleveland-agree-3-year-91-million-extension">signing a three-year extension</a> with the Cavs, according <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-state-of-the-nba-trade-landscape" rel="noopener">to a report</a>. After signing the three-year deal, Allen can’t be traded until February. But because he signed the extension at the right time, he’ll be eligible to be traded before the annual trade deadline this coming season. Of course, teams could pursue him even beyond this season. But the Cavs quickly got Allen to agree to a contract extension, with possible future moves already in mind.</p><p>“The Cavaliers on Friday made it official and announced Jarrett Allen’s three-year, $91 million contract extension,” wrote NBA insider Marc Stein. “It’s believed that Allen was essentially obligated to sign the deal before Aug. 6 as a condition of Cleveland extending him at the maximum amount allowed based on the 26-year-old’s current contract.”</p><p>“Allen thus becomes eligible to be traded on Feb. 2, 2025 … four days before next season’s deadline. Rest assured that the Cavaliers’ proverbial phone will continue to ring with Allen interest, as it has for years, given the ongoing belief leaguewide that Evan Mobley and Allen are a suspect long-term fit as a duo. The Cavaliers, of course, recently signed Mobley and star guard Donovan Mitchell to max extensions.”</p><p>“As with [Lauri] Markkanen, Allen would have been ineligible to be traded during the upcoming season had his extension been formally signed after Tuesday.”</p><p>Last season, Allen averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks in 31.7 minutes per game. He was key for the Cavs in the playoffs’ first round against the Orlando Magic. But he was eventually sidelined due to a fractured rib.</p><h2><b>Why would the Cavs trade Jarrett Allen?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Allen-Dunks-Cavs-Magic.jpg"><figcaption>David Richard-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Allen’s fit with big man Evan Mobley will be a key storyline for the Cavs this coming season. While the two bigs have formed a strong defensive frontcourt in their three seasons together, there have been questions about their viability from a spacing perspective.</p><p>Cleveland and the rest of the NBA just saw how the Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship relatively easily. The Celtics have shooting at every position, which the Cavs don’t have at center with Allen. Although Mobley isn’t a three-point marksman, he at least has showcased his ability to score from the perimeter. So, if Cleveland wants to win it all, they might have to make Mobley their center and find shooting alongside him elsewhere.</p><p>That, in turn, would make Allen a sacrifice. So that’s where the timing of this extension comes into play. Cleveland can pull the trigger this season on a trade if the pairing between Allen and Mobley remains suspect. But, more importantly, it allows the Cavs to get the most attractive offer possible. If Cleveland trades Allen, they want to take a step forward, not backward, when losing him.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With this deal, the Cavaliers hope to continue their winning ways by locking up their player core of Allen, Evan Mobley, and Donovan Mitchell to new contracts. This core, including Darius Garland, has helped the Cavs reach the postseason for two consecutive years.</p><h2>Jarrett Allen’s deal</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Jarrett-Allen-with-the-ball-against-the-Magic.jpg"><figcaption>© David Richard-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1818737314291478798" rel="noopener">In a post on X</a>, Wojnarowski added that Allen is the third player to have signed massive extensions with the Cavs this offseason.</p><p>Previously, the team signed Mitchell to a three-year, $150 million deal, and forward Mobley to a five-year $224 million extension. These deals further solidify the team’s ascension into “long-term Eastern Conference contenders,” Wojnarowski said.</p><p>Last season, the Cavs <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/cavaliers-jarrett-allen-extension" rel="noopener">advanced to the second round</a> of the playoffs after beating the Orlando Magic in seven games, where they lost to the eventual champions Boston Celtics.</p><p>Likewise, the team hopes to take the next step in their postseason journey by hiring Kenny Atkinson as a new head coach, replacing J.B. Bickerstaff. Atkinson had been the previous coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020 before working as an assistant for the LA Clippers and the Golden State Warriors, where he won an NBA title in 2022.</p><p>Moreover, Allen hopes to continue his development as a reliable frontcourt anchor both on offense and defense after his All-Star season in 2022. Last season, he posted averages of 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists in 77 games. However, a broken rib took him out of action in the latter half of the Magic series and the entirety of the Celtics series.</p><h2>Cavaliers fans react</h2><p>Various fans responded with excitement to Woj’s announcement. One poster praised the deal by saying, “Let’s f**king go!” Meanwhile, another commenter replied, “Wow, great deal.”</p><p>Another poster even compared Jarrett Allen’s new contract extension with Minnesota Timberwolves center and 2024 Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert’s own contract.</p><p>“Good deal considering Gobert makes almost 50 mil a year,” the poster said. The chorus of positive replies continues with more people praising Allen staying with the Cavs, with one account calling it a “steal,” a “huge steal,” a “pretty good deal,” and “well-deserved.”</p><p>Finally, another poster cited Allen’s contributions to the team. “Solid signing! Jarrett is a difference maker! Great player,” he said.</p><p>The team’s record reflects Allen’s role. With him, the Cavaliers have a record of 90-55 <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-backs-up-jarrett-allen-amid-jb-bickerstaff-issue">in the past two seasons</a>.
