Atkinson recently added to his staff by bringing in former NBA wing DeMarre Carroll, who was most recently an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers, and it just so happens that Allen and Carroll were teammates with the Brooklyn Nets in the late 2010s, a fact that Allen finds peculiar <a href="https://x.com/AmNotEvan/status/1841182600540668322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1841182600540668322%7Ctwgr%5E80c7a178341772b49b350aaffbc4a61fb1c41407%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fcavaliersnation.com%2F2024%2F10%2F02%2Fjarrett-allen-admits-he-feels-a-little-weird-about-one-part-of-new-coaching-staff%2F" rel="noopener">given their current situation.</a></p><p>“Jarrett Allen shared with me that it’s a little weird that DeMarre Carroll, someone he played with a few years ago on the court, is now one of his coaches,” reported Evan Dammarell on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>In fact, not only did Allen and Carroll play together during their time with the Nets, but Atkinson was also their coach during that tenure as well. Atkinson was also an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks during their 60 win season in 2014-15, during which Carroll was the starting small forward.</p><h2><b>What can the Cavs accomplish in 2024-25?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Allen-at-media-day.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>At the current juncture, most pundits have the Cavs somewhere in the same tier as teams like the Milwaukee Bucks, Orlando Magic, and Miami Heat, a clear tier below the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, and Philadelphia 76ers in the Eastern Conference hierarchy.</p><p>Of course, not many expected that Donovan Mitchell would still be a member of the Cavs at this point in time, but the star shooting guard reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise by signing a long term extension with them this offseason.</p><p>The Cavs will be banking on the continued development of Darius Garland at the point guard position after he struggled through an injury-riddled year in 2023-24. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-jarrett-allen-redefines-his-edge-while-dominating-magic">Allen suffered a cracked rib</a> in Game 4 of the first-round playoff series. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-is-jarrett-allen-playing-game-1-vs-celtics-latest-injury-update">Allen would miss the following eight games</a> of the playoff run with an injury that became an ongoing point of contention. Fans and <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10122498-cavs-marcus-morris-id-have-played-through-jarrett-allens-injury-in-nba-playoffs" rel="noopener">even his former teammates</a> called Allen’s integrity into question. Confusing wordage and Allen being repeatedly listed as “questionable” rather than “out” led to even more speculation throughout the following months. But during Cavs Media Day, Allen finally set the record straight.</p><p>“I think that definitely contributed to the skepticism of the injury,” Allen said. “With rib injuries, you don’t understand how bad it is until you go through it — looking at the CT scan you can still see the piece of bone that’s still floating in my body, it was definitely a worse injury than people thought.”</p><p>Allen spoke about how difficult it was for him to sleep and even raise his arms above his head during the recovery process. As much as it killed him to be on the sidelines, he simply couldn’t compete at playoff intensity with his injury, no matter how others felt about it.</p><p>“I feel like I’m very sure of myself; if I was able to play, I would play,” Allen said. “It’s understandable [why people were skeptical of his injury], but it takes a lot more to get under my skin.”</p><h2><b>What else did Jarrett Allen have to say at Cavs Media Day?</b></h2><p>He also had one of the best regular seasons of his career in the 2023-24 campaign, averaging 16.5 points (a career-high), 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Allen was highly durable, playing 77 of 82 regular season games for Cleveland. He takes pride in his durability and, heading into the 2024-25 campaign, is also something Allen wants to maximize by playing all 82 games.</p><p>“I want to be able to go out there every single game, every single night, and just be with my teammates,” Allen said. “It’s a big chip on the shoulder. I want to prove that I’m still the player that I am, that I’m still going to be out there every single night trying my hardest and making an impact.”</p><p>Now that he is healthy again, that certainly could happen. It helps that Allen is reunited with old head coach Kenny Atkinson, who coached Allen while they were together in Brooklyn. Under Atkinson, the focus is on the Cavs shooting more three-pointers and playing at a faster pace. While Allen is more than comfortable playing faster basketball, he is also open to spacing the floor.</p><h2><b>Is Jarrett Allen from deep going to be a thing for the Cavs?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Jarrett-Allen-Cavs-Media-Day.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>“Every year, the talk is always about J.A. shooting more threes,” Allen said, flashing his iconic smile. “But, hopefully, we can finally make that happen.”</p><p>Whether or not Allen is joking remains to be seen. But, after re-signing with Cleveland on a three-year, $91 million maximum extension, he’s here not just for a long time. He’s here for a good time, too.</p><p>“I like it here,” Allen said. “I like the city and I like the people here. It’s easy to say in front of everybody just to hype everybody up, but I truly do genuinely like it here. I believe in it here. I’ve put in three and a half years to try to see this team succeed. While a lot of Cavs fans still think that a departure should be imminent, a known insider posits that no moves around the big man would occur.</p><p>Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com noted that <a href="https://cavsnation.com/cavs-news-jarrett-allen-wants-evan-mobley-shooting-more-threes">Jarrett Allen is the most indispensable player</a> in the Cavs rotation. Despite the changes from JB Bickerstaff to Kenny Atkinson, the big man will still be a staple in their squad alongside Evan Mobley, Donovan Mitchell, and Darius Garland. All of it is for good reason. The Cavs insider explained why <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-l7ObPf4_k&amp;ab_channel=ClevelandCavaliersoncleveland.com" rel="noopener">in his latest appearance</a> on the Wine and Gold Talk podcast.</p><p>“What people tend to say in this organization is that Jarrett’s the most indispensable player that they have. They just cannot function at the same high level offensively and defensively without Jarrett and the numbers bear that out. They are a different team at both ends of the floor when he is not healthy. He averages 16.5 points while also grabbing 10 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per contest.</p><p>“People inside this organization feel like the rebuild finally changed the minute that they traded for Jarrett. They felt like that gave them an identity. That gave them a centerpiece and gave them another building block. That gave them a defensive presence. It gave them the right piece to put around Darius Garland,” he added.</p><p>The Cavs have now found a squad that can contend for postseason success post-LeBron James. With Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Darius Garland, and Allen, they have a huge window to win an NBA Championship. When one adds in Kenny Atkinson’s good mastery of defensive schemes and proper rotations, they could very well be title contenders within the next half-decade. But because he signed the extension at the right time, he’ll be eligible to be traded before the annual trade deadline this coming season. Of course, teams could pursue him even beyond this season. But the Cavs quickly got Allen to agree to a contract extension, with possible future moves already in mind.</p><p>“The Cavaliers on Friday made it official and announced Jarrett Allen’s three-year, $91 million contract extension,” wrote NBA insider Marc Stein. “It’s believed that Allen was essentially obligated to sign the deal before Aug. 6 as a condition of Cleveland extending him at the maximum amount allowed based on the 26-year-old’s current contract.”</p><p>“Allen thus becomes eligible to be traded on Feb. 2, 2025 … four days before next season’s deadline. Rest assured that the Cavaliers’ proverbial phone will continue to ring with Allen interest, as it has for years, given the ongoing belief leaguewide that Evan Mobley and Allen are a suspect long-term fit as a duo. The Cavaliers, of course, recently signed Mobley and star guard Donovan Mitchell to max extensions.”</p><p>“As with [Lauri] Markkanen, Allen would have been ineligible to be traded during the upcoming season had his extension been formally signed after Tuesday.”</p><p>Last season, Allen averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.1 blocks in 31.7 minutes per game. He was key for the Cavs in the playoffs’ first round against the Orlando Magic. But he was eventually sidelined due to a fractured rib.</p><h2><b>Why would the Cavs trade Jarrett Allen?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/Allen-Dunks-Cavs-Magic.jpg"><figcaption>David Richard-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Allen’s fit with big man Evan Mobley will be a key storyline for the Cavs this coming season. While the two bigs have formed a strong defensive frontcourt in their three seasons together, there have been questions about their viability from a spacing perspective.</p><p>Cleveland and the rest of the NBA just saw how the Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship relatively easily. The Celtics have shooting at every position, which the Cavs don’t have at center with Allen. Although Mobley isn’t a three-point marksman, he at least has showcased his ability to score from the perimeter. So, if Cleveland wants to win it all, they might have to make Mobley their center and find shooting alongside him elsewhere.</p><p>That, in turn, would make Allen a sacrifice. So that’s where the timing of this extension comes into play. Cleveland can pull the trigger this season on a trade if the pairing between Allen and Mobley remains suspect. But, more importantly, it allows the Cavs to get the most attractive offer possible. With this deal, the Cavaliers hope to continue their winning ways by locking up their player core of Allen, Evan Mobley, and Donovan Mitchell to new contracts. These deals further solidify the team’s ascension into “long-term Eastern Conference contenders,” Wojnarowski said.</p><p>Last season, the Cavs <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/cavaliers-jarrett-allen-extension" rel="noopener">advanced to the second round</a> of the playoffs after beating the Orlando Magic in seven games, where they lost to the eventual champions Boston Celtics.</p><p>Likewise, the team hopes to take the next step in their postseason journey by hiring Kenny Atkinson as a new head coach, replacing J.B. Bickerstaff. Atkinson had been the previous coach of the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020 before working as an assistant for the LA Clippers and the Golden State Warriors, where he won an NBA title in 2022.</p><p>Moreover, Allen hopes to continue his development as a reliable frontcourt anchor both on offense and defense after his All-Star season in 2022. Cleveland already <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-agrees-contract-extension">signed Donovan Mitchell</a> and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavaliers-news-evan-mobley-secures-monster-extension-deal-with-cleveland">Evan Mobley to lucrative maximum contract</a> extensions. Now, the Cavs have completed the trifecta, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-jarrett-allen-cleveland-agree-3-year-91-million-extension">signing Jarrett Allen</a> to a three-year, $91 million maximum contract extension.</p><p>Locking up Mitchell, Mobley and Allen echoes the sentiment Cleveland has had all offseason. They were never looking to move on from any member of their core four. Instead, they continued believing this group was on the precipice of winning a championship and locking it down for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Granted, there will still be questions about how this foursome fits for the Cavs, especially between Mobley and Allen. Last season, neither showed signs of being floor-stretching big men until Mobley tried to implement a perimeter shot into his game. Regardless, Mobley’s shooting touch didn’t fully manifest, and, at times, Cleveland looked crowded on the interior and struggled to find consistent offense.</p><p>That concern clearly never came up in conversations between the Cavs and either Mobley or Allen’s camps. Instead, Cleveland committed $366.2 million between the two players for nearly the next half-decade. While that amount is more than the GDP of the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu combined, it’s clear that the Cavs believe in this duo and its long-term fit.</p><h2><b>How the Cavs duo of Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen can work long-term</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Mobley-Allen-Block-Cavs-Kings.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Jarrett Allen will never become a floor-stretching, shot-blocking big like Milwaukee Bucks center Brook Lopez that will make this partnership work. Instead, the pressure lies on Mobley and, more importantly, head coach Kenny Atkinson to make Mobley’s three-point shooting and his playmaking a much more reliable weapon in his offensive repertoire.</p><p>Thankfully, not seeing Mobley’s potential isn’t the dilemma for Atkinson. Consistently carving out a space for him to continuously show those skills. Using Mobley more often as a play initiator is one way Atkinson intends to achieve that. Another is utilizing Mobley as the big man in five-out sets, surrounding him with spacing. Atkinson has a vision, and with the money Cleveland committed to him as head coach and to Mobley and Allen, they believe Atkinson is the man for the job.</p><p>“With the roster that’s in place, there’s enough to take that next step, no doubt about it,” Atkinson said. But Evan is a big piece of that. I’m going to feel a huge responsibility to help him get to that top 15, top 20 [player in the league], whatever it is, top five. Why not? The skill level, the athleticism, and the human being, I don’t see why we can’t.”</p><p>Cleveland won’t see the transformation of this partnership between Allen and Mobley overnight. But with the money the Cavs committed to this duo with either extension, the belief is that they’ll get there sooner rather than later under Atkinson. It all hinges on Mobley’s development, and thankfully, he’s shown signs of being a floor-spacing, do-it-all, two-way big man. With Atkinson spearheading Mobley’s growth, the results should manifest throughout the season, and when things finally click, Cleveland will be nearly impossible to score or defend against.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He studied journalism and communication at UConn.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Cleveland Cavaliers and center Jarrett Allen <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1818737314291478798" rel="noopener">have agreed on</a> a three-year, $91 million maximum contract extension that will guarantee him $131 over the next five years, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.</p><p>Jarrett Allen has been a key <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-turning-down-spurs-darius-garland-trade-offer">part of the Cavaliers</a> over the last few years, and he was previously under contract through the end of the 2025-2026 season. He is now under contract for three more seasons following that.</p><p>For the next two seasons, Allen is scheduled to be paid $20 million, and then the extension will kick in, which comes out to just over $30 million a year. It will be worth monitoring the structure of the deal to see what the cap hit will be for each season.</p><p>This offseason, there was some thought <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/isaac-okoro-cavs-tenure-writing-on-the-wall">that the Cavaliers</a> could consider trading Allen if it presented a way to bring in another talent to improve the team. In the end, Cleveland decided that the best way forward was to extend him.</p><p>Allen is entering his age 26 season, and the extension will kick in for his age 28 season and go through his age 30 season. The Cavaliers hope he can be part of a team that is trying to grow into a true NBA title contender in the Eastern Conference with Donovan Mitchell as the centerpiece.</p><h2><b>Jarrett Allen’s development and role with Cavaliers</b></h2><p>Although Allen is still a somewhat younger player at 26 years old, he has been in the league for a while. He came in with the Brooklyn Nets in the 2017-2018 season, and developed over the next few seasons, seeing an increase in points while also receiving votes for the defensive player of the year award.</p><p>Allen was a part of a young Nets team that made Brooklyn an attractive destination for Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to sign. Eventually, he was involved in a three-team deal with the Nets, Houston Rockets and Cavaliers that landed James Harden in Brooklyn.</p><p>Obviously, things did not go well in Brooklyn and that superteam broke up. The Cavaliers are still benefitting, as Allen made an All-Star game in the 2021-2022 season. He and Evan Mobley are key pieces for the Cavaliers, alongside Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland.</p><p>There is some skepticism regarding whether or not the Cavaliers can make a deep playoff run and beat out teams like the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks and even the Philadelphia 76ers. It will be interesting to see if any changes are made to the core of players in the near future, but it appears that Allen is here to stay for the foreseeable future.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But the atmosphere surrounding the Cavs felt like one of doom and gloom following their five-game series defeat at the hands of the eventual champion Boston Celtics. In particular, Jarrett Allen, who was one of the team’s most consistent players amid an injury-ravaged 2023-24 campaign, didn’t seem to be in good graces with <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-jarrett-allen-numerous-admirers-cavs-frustration-buzz" rel="noopener">other members of the Cavs franchise</a> after he missed his team’s final eight playoff games due to a rib injury.</p><p>Midseason pickup Marcus Morris Sr. said after the Cavs’ playoff exit that if he were in Allen’s position, <a href="https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10122498-cavs-marcus-morris-id-have-played-through-jarrett-allens-injury-in-nba-playoffs" rel="noopener">he would have played</a> through injury. And then in the aftermath of the 2024 NBA Finals, former Cavs head coach JB Bickerstaff, who was relieved of his duties despite winning 99 games over the past two seasons, praised Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic for playing through pain, which seemed to be <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/mavericks/former-cleveland-cavaliers-coach-praises-dallas-mavericks-luka-doncic-possibly-shades-his-former-player-24-jb-bickerstaff" rel="noopener">a veiled shot</a> against Allen’s reluctance to put himself in harm’s way.</p><p>Nonetheless, Donovan Mitchell is not joining in what appears to be a team-up against Jarrett Allen. Jarrett Allen’s reluctance to play through injury came up as a sore spot for some members of the Cavs organization, and it’s becoming clearer where these feelings of animosity originated.</p><p>Perhaps this fractured relationship between player and coach is what drove the Cavs to jettison JB Bickerstaff. Perhaps Donovan Mitchell’s Instagram story lends greater credence to the notion that he and Bickerstaff truly did not see eye-to-eye. Whatever the case may be, Allen should have a <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-cavs-have-donovan-mitchell-reason-not-trade-jarrett-allen" rel="noopener">fresh start with the Cavs</a> for the 2024-25 season as they look to improve yet again, this time under the tutelage of a new head coach.</p><h2><b>Jarrett Allen was a warrior for the Cavs</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.cavsnation.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Cavs-Evan-Mobley-with-Jarrett-Allen.jpg"></figure><p>The notion that Jarrett Allen may be soft for refusing to do whatever was required to play through injury in the playoffs is asinine. Allen was very much durable during the regular season. Having to play 82 games in the regular season has become more of a grind due to the faster pace of the game, with load management coming in to save the day, but there Allen was, suiting up in 77 games for the team, which was good for second-best on the team, only behind the 82-game iron man Georges Niang.</p><p>Niang may have played heavier minutes amid Evan Mobley’s injury, but Allen’s workload is much heavier than Niang’s, and he plays a much more important role on the team, having to set screens on every possession while serving as the backbone of the Cavs’ defense. Allen did all those things well while leading the team in total minutes during the regular season.</p><p>And then in the playoffs, there were stretches during the Cavs’ first-round matchup against the Orlando Magic where Jarrett Allen was, far and away, their best player on the court. Given the renaissance of the rim-protecting, rim-rolling big man thanks to how well the Mavericks utilized their Daniel Gafford-Dereck Lively II duo, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sources-jarrett-allen-cavs-future-secure-amid-trade-rumors" rel="noopener">Cavs cannot afford</a> to alienate Allen and encourage him to seek an exit.</p><p>At the very least, Donovan Mitchell is doing his part to make sure Allen feels valued, which should only be good thing especially as he looks to secure a huge extension to stay in Cleveland.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

To Altman, the Cavs are a few more pieces away from becoming a true title contender, and he knows that talent like what Cleveland has assembled doesn’t come together so easily. While the naysayers and cynics may continue to disagree with Altman’s plan, holes continually are poked into their argument on why the Cavs need to shake up the roster.</p><p>Sources have confirmed to ClutchPoints that despite concerns and questions about his fit next to Evan Mobley on the court, Cleveland remains hesitant to trade former All-Star Jarrett Allen, as <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-nba-trade-talk-free-agency?r=38b9xe&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;triedRedirect=true" rel="noopener">first reported</a> by league insider Marc Stein.</p><p>This news may seem like a bolt out of the blue, especially with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-linked-to-jarrett-allen-trade-again-with-jonas-valanciunas-on-way-out">Allen regularly linked to the New Orleans Pelicans</a> as a possible trade destination. But despite the somewhat suddenness of it all, Allen being safe further reaffirms Altman’s vision of not making moves that, in his eyes, don’t help the Cavs level up toward becoming a contender.</p><h2><b>Why it makes sense for Cleveland to keep Jarrett Allen</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Mitchell-Celebrates-With-Allen.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Again, looking at how the Cavs performed this postseason, especially when <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/cavs-news-is-jarrett-allen-playing-game-1-vs-celtics-latest-injury-update">Allen was sidelined with a fractured rib</a>, it became even clearer that Cleveland is more dynamic with Mobley at center. But despite all the noise around Mobley becoming the team’s starting center, the quiet part that no one mentions is that he still didn’t look fully equipped to handle full-time responsibilities as a full-time five, either.</p><p>That doesn’t mean Mobley cannot play center when he isn’t sharing the floor with Allen. Instead, Mobley can do it in sporadic bursts, creating lineup versatility and stylistic flexibility whenever Allen sits. If anything, the Cavs need to make this pairing of Mobley and Allen more palatable for a proper <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-why-cavs-head-coaching-job-is-more-attractive-than-lakers">head-coaching candidate</a> to creatively set up Cleveland on either end of the floor for success. So as it’s been reported that the Cavs have been linked to Denver Nuggets assistant David Adelman and Minnesota Timberwolves lead assistant coach Micah Nori, the mindset of keeping Allen and Mobley together makes even more sense.</p><p>While a coaching change to either Adelman or Nori would not fix Cleveland’s existing issues in the backcourt, it would be a step toward empowering both Allen and Mobley on the floor.  Adelman, who draws tactical inspiration from his father, Rick Adelman, has built an offense that plays to the strengths of his bigs, namely three-time MVP Nikola Jokic and multi-faceted gadget forward Aaron Gordon. Nori, meanwhile, has managed Minnesota’s rotations and lineups, employing a two-way system that plays to the strengths of the star-studded big man duo of Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert. The Cavs front office outlined <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-nba-trade-talk-free-agency?r=38b9xe&amp;utm_medium=ios&amp;triedRedirect=true" rel="noopener">that they</a> understand that there will be fit and rotational issues with him and Evan Mobley. Allen has gotten better at playing drop coverage as well which makes it convenient for when Mitchell gets blown by.</p><p>Being a fan of each others’ game thus makes it very unlikely that these two get separated. But, it is also this continued improvement that might be a double-edged sword. Obviously, Allen is going to demand more money from the Cavs front office due to his constant rise as a top vertical threat in the NBA. This makes their financial situation much harder to deal with in the long run. Effectively, this makes their championship window shorter in length. Another problem they could also deal with is having to sign effective players but on minimum deals. This harms their continuity.</p><p>Allen just finished the season with a career-high 16.5 points per game average. He also did with an effective 63.4% field goal percentage. It was also the second-highest rebounding season of his career. The Cavs center notched 10.5 rebounds on a nightly basis which only trailed his lone All-Star season when he got 10.8 boards.</p><p>This skyrocket in production is insane for the Cavs center despite having to share minutes, touches, and coverages with Evan Mobley. Allen was a big factor in the Cavaliers’ success this past season, especially on defense. He averaged 16.5 points, 10.5 rebounds per game, 2.7 assists per game, and 63.4% from the field. He also averaged 0.7 steals per game and 1.1 blocks per game on defense. He missed most of the Cavaliers’ playoff run due to a rib injury. He missed every game after Game 4 of the Orlando Magic series in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals, which includes the entire series against the Boston Celtics. There seems to be a lot of turmoil going on behind the scenes with the Cavaliers and that was highlighted by the fact that head coach JB Bickerstaff was recently let go. With some re-organizing happening with the Cavaliers, it makes sense the roster might look different and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jarrett-allen-league-wide-trade-interest-casts-doubt-cavs-future">Allen might </a><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jarrett-allen-league-wide-trade-interest-casts-doubt-cavs-future">be headed</a><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jarrett-allen-league-wide-trade-interest-casts-doubt-cavs-future"> elsewhere</a>.</p><p>Jarrett Allen’s next team odds via <a href="https://sports.betonline.ag/sportsbook/futures-and-props/nba-specials/specials" rel="noopener">BetOnline</a>:</p><p><b>Oklahoma City Thunder (+300):</b></p><p>The Thunder are a great fit for Jarrett Allen for a few different reasons. Allen signed a five-year extension recently, worth about $20 million a year and $100 million in total, so the Thunder are one of the teams that can take on his salary. They also need more help down low. Chet Holmgren has been great for the Thunder, but they need more help next to him because he can not do much overall. He would also bring in some much-needed experience to the youngest team in the NBA.</p><p><b>New York Knicks (+400):</b></p><p>The Knicks need some stability in the frontcourt. They were dealing with a lot of injuries at the end of the year to both Mitchell Robinson and Julius Randle and it left Isaiah Hartenstein by himself. The Knicks were racked with injuries across the board by the end of the year, but they needed more help with depth in the front court, especially by the end of the year. The Knicks do have salary cap space as well and will be able to take on his big salary overall. This could be an interesting fit, but the Knicks might need to cut bait with either Mitchell Robinson or Isaiah Hartenstein with the frontcourt getting more crowded.</p><p><b>New Orleans Pelicans (+600):</b></p><p>The Pelicans would be an interesting fit for Allen. There have been some reports that have come out that the Pelicans are looking to be aggressive, so adding Allen could work out for them if they are looking to trade away some salary like Brandon Ingram for example. They still have Jonas Valanciunas, but Allen is more athletic and Valanciunas is getting older, so he could be a replacement piece on top adding some depth. Allen would be an interesting piece to pick up for the Pelicans because it could work out, but some pieces might need to be moved around.</p><h2>Where is the best fit for Jarrett Allen?</h2><p>The best fit overall for Jarrett Allen if the Cavaliers decide to trade him would be the Thunder. The Thunder have the cap space and have the young pieces that would work well around him. He would be a good fit as a veteran being added to a young team that needs experience too and depth down low. Sources tell ClutchPoints that the New Orleans Pelicans, Chicago Bulls, and Memphis Grizzlies are all teams already monitoring Allen’s future with Cleveland. Thankfully, considering Allen had a stellar year, arguably the best in his career despite obvious All-Star and All-Defensive snubs, Cleveland may have a golden opportunity to try and get the best possible returns for Allen.</p><p>But, when considering the Pelicans, the Bulls, and the Grizzlies, how bold can the Cavs be in any possible trade discussions surrounding Allen?</p><p>The expectation on Cleveland’s side of things should be a high-impact player who can contribute immediately and a combination of young players or draft picks to help the Cavs make further moves down the line. However, with Memphis looking to return to the top of the Western Conference and in serious need of a big man like Allen, the Grizzlies cannot give up scraps either.</p><p>That’s why if Cleveland were to entertain a deal with Memphis, the Cavs should ask the Grizzlies for either Marcus Smart or a combination of Luke Kennard and Brandon Clarke, along with the No. 9 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft or a young player like Ziare Williams.</p><p>While that might seem like a lot from Memphis, the same standard should be held for teams like Chicago and New Orleans as well. If the Bulls want Allen, then it should cost them Alex Caruso, Dalen Terry, and the No. 11 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. For the Pelicans, meanwhile, a realistic return for Allen would have to include Herb Jones, Larry Nance Jr., the No. 17 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, and either Jeremiah Robinson-Earl or Jose Alvarado.</p><p>No matter what, if Cleveland begins to seriously consider trading Allen, they have to find a return that equates to the big man’s on-court impact while being mindful that Mobley is taking over at center. That means finding depth behind Mobley and putting spacing around him or depth at other positions of need. The team was riddled with injuries throughout the regular season. In the playoffs, they bowed out to the Boston Celtics, and one could argue that missing Donovan Mitchell (for two games) and Jarrett Allen had plenty to do with it. <a href="https://cavsnation.com/nba-rumors-jarrett-allen-likely-done-cavs-allegations-refused-injection-help-injury">Allen, in particular</a>, was sidelined the entire second round due to a rib contusion. With that being said, rumors about potential suitors currently surround the big man amid some reported Cavs frustration about his apparently unwillingness to take a painkiller injection in an attempt to play through the injury.</p><p>NBA insider Marc Stein writes the following in <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/nba-trade-talk-and-free-agency-chatter">a recent update</a> on The Stein Line:</p><p>“Allen continues to have numerous admirers in rival front offices despite the whispers of frustration circulating in Cleveland surrounding Allen’s apparent reluctance to take a pain-killing injection to address a rib injury that sidelined him for the Cavs’ final eight playoff games.”</p><p>Stein doesn’t exactly mention the particular teams interested in Allen, but the New Orleans Pelicans are known fans and could <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-linked-to-jarrett-allen-trade-again-with-jonas-valanciunas-on-way-out" rel="noopener">pursue him to replace Jonas Valanciunas</a>. Allen is still just 26 years old and one of the better centers in the NBA.</p><p>As for the injury, Allen reportedly didn’t want to get the injection because of what happened to quarterback Tyrod Taylor when he tried something similar. Taylor wound up with a punctured lung due to a shot for a rib injury.</p><h2>The effects of Jarrett Allen’s injury</h2><p>Allen’s injury was definitely a big blow for the Cavs. During the regular season, when names such as Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Max Strus went down with injuries, Allen was one of the healthier players. Unfortunately, that all changed during the Cavs’ first-round series against the Orlando Magic, when the big man suffered the said rib contusion. He would miss the rest of the playoffs, leaving Cleveland with a shorthanded frontline to end their season.</p><p>Throughout the team’s 82-game stretch, Allen averaged a double double of 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. In four postseason appearances, he upped his numbers to 17.0 points and 13.8 boards. Without the center manning the middle, the Cavs had to move Evan Mobley to the five while playing small with fours such as Marcus Morris Sr. and Isaac Okoro. This proved to be difficult, as Cleveland was outrebounded throughout their second-round series. In five games, the Celtics finished with a total of 221 boards, compared to the Cavs’ 177. To make things more troubling, Mitchell, who only suited up for three games, was the second-leading rebounder for Cleveland in that series.</p><p>With all this possibly going on, could the Cavs lose their anchor in the middle? That remains to be seen, but right now, plenty of other teams could use a solid center like Allen. It won’t be surprising if there are indeed other organizations that will look to capitalize on the rumored frustration surrounding the big man and his painkiller issue. Both teams entered this season with lofty expectations for their young cores but fell flat in the playoffs. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-brandon-ingram-willie-green-shared-eye-opening-exchange">Pelicans barely even made</a> the postseason before getting swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. The Cavs eked by the Orlando Magic in seven games before losing in five to the Boston Celtics after injuries ravaged their team.</p><p>As a result, both teams could make some big changes to their rosters in the summer, particularly at the center spot. Evan Mobley thrived at the five after Allen’s rib injury he suffered in Game 4 against Orlando. Jonas Valanciunas is slated to become a free agent after this season. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-pelicans-linked-to-jarrett-allen-trade-again-with-jonas-valanciunas-on-way-out">Pelicans need a center</a> and the Cavs can afford to send one away. Perhaps these two can work out a trade some time soon.</p><h2><b>Pelicans trade for Jarrett Allen</b></h2><p><b>Pelicans receive: Jarrett Allen, Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, 2024 first-round pick</b></p><p><b>Cavaliers receive: Brandon Ingram, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl</b></p><h2><b>Why the Pelicans do it</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Jarrett-Allen.jpg"><figcaption>David Richard-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>While Valanciunas has been solid for New Orleans since his arrival, he often sat in crunch time. Larry Nance Jr. was the one who manned the center spot for the Pelicans in those minutes for defensive purposes. He did a serviceable job but also got overpowered by bigger players often.</p><p>Allen would fix that problem for New Orleans. He was right there among the league’s best in <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/players/defensive-impact?CF=DEF_RIM_FGA*GE*4:GP*GE*20&amp;Season=2023-24&amp;SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DEF_RIM_FG_PCT">field goal percentage allowed at the rim</a> during the regular season. His offensive package has expanded over the years as well. He averaged a career-high 16.5 points and 2.7 assists per game. Allen would be a tremendous fit on both sides of the floor next to Zion Williamson.</p><p>This deal would cost the Pelicans Brandon Ingram, but that should not be a death knell for this team. New Orleans was oddly mediocre when all three of Ingram, Williamson, and CJ McCollum were on the floor together. In fact, worse than mediocre.</p><p>They had a<a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/19/lineups?on=1742&amp;on=2390&amp;on=4572#tab-four_factors"> -3 net rating</a> when all three playing at the same time during the regular season, via Cleaning the Glass. New Orleans’ <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?sort=NET_RATING&amp;dir=-1&amp;SeasonType=Regular+Season">+4.6 net rating</a> for the season ranked sixth in the league, so it isn’t as if the rest of the Pelicans’ roster is failing those three.</p><p>Ingram isn’t the one with the most to blame of those three. However, he is entering the final season of his contract. The Pelicans could trade him and fill a big need on their roster and replace Ingram’s scoring punch with LeVert and Trey Murphy. It would be tough to trade him, but this deal likely would make New Orleans a more complete team.</p><h2><b>Why the Cavaliers do it</b></h2><p>The Cavs need more talent on the wing. LeVert, Niang, Max Strus, Isaac Okoro, and Dean Wade are the only players on their team between 6-foot-five and 6-foot-nine that averaged at least 20 minutes per game during the regular season. All of them with the exception of LeVert and Strus are specialists who aren’t asked to create with the ball in their hands much at all.</p><p>LeVert’s scoring pop shined during the playoffs, but his impact has been far too inconsistent for much of his career. He posted an effective field goal percentage 48.7% this season, far below league average. He’s also just a 34.1% career three-point shooter His playmaking comes and goes too, but he was much better this year. His 5.1 assists per game were a career-high.</p><p>Ingram represents a big upgrade over LeVert across the board offensively. On top of that, Mobley is ready to slide to the center spot full-time. Despite Cleveland’s lack of size in the backcourt and being short on stout perimeter defenders outside of Strus and Okoro, their defense was fine with Mobley at center. They posted a <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/team/6/lineups?seasontype=playoffs&amp;on=4866&amp;off=4337#tab-four_factors">defensive rating of 111.6</a> in the playoffs in that alignment. That mark would’ve ranked <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?SeasonType=Regular%20Season&amp;dir=A&amp;sort=DEF_RATING">sixth in the regular season</a>.</p><p>Cleveland would add offensive firepower in a wide-open Eastern Conference outside of Boston. New Orleans gets defensive stability in the loaded West. Both teams become more snug from a fit perspective.
