A lifelong sports lover, Jackson joined ClutchPoints and Cavs Nation in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Cavs News</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The <a href="https://cavsnation.com/news/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-sits-in-stunned-silence-heartbreaking-loss-to-celtics">Cleveland Cavs have been</a> one of the more disappointing teams thus far on the 2025-26 NBA season, currently sitting at 14-11 after a recent home loss to the Golden State Warriors’ backups. <a href="https://cavsnation.com/news/cavs-news-how-donovan-mitchell-kenny-atkinsons-unprecedented-demand-pacers-game">Donovan Mitchell has been</a> playing at an elite level so far this year, but the Cavs haven’t gotten what they were hoping to out of Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen so far this year.</p><p>One player who has stepped up for Cleveland is wing Jaylon Tyson, who has infused the team with his energy, defense, and improved three-point shooting ability this season.</p><p>Recently, Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson <a href="https://www.fearthesword.com/cavs-analysis/41504/cleveland-cavaliers-jaylon-tyson-is-only-scratching-the-surface" rel="noopener">spoke on how</a> Tyson’s time in college helped prepare him to be able to contribute at the NBA level.</p><p>“Because we’ve got so many guys out and he’s got to do more, he’s prepared for it,” said Atkinson, per Tony Pesta of Fear the Sword.</p><p>“He can do some goofy things,” Atkinson added. “You never quite know what to expect, I think the guys really enjoy being around him though, at the end of the day, we’ve been talking about joy a lot lately, and he kinda epitomizes that with the way he plays, and the way he carries himself.”</p><p>Overall, the Cavs have certainly needed Tyson’s energy and advanced skillset so far this year as they look to navigate a rough opening act to the season, at least relative to their NBA Finals expectations.</p><p>In any case, the Cavs will next take the floor on Friday evening against the Washington Wizards.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

As a team, I think that we’re not hungry enough,” Tyson bluntly said postgame in the locker room following the 117-115 defeat. “What happened to us last year, like, it’s a similar thing that was happening this year — getting ran out the gym, getting beat on the glass. Toughness, right? So, I mean, it’s just a common theme, and ultimately it’s on us to fix.”</p><p>Yet again, the Cavs had to rely on their most inexperienced players to dig them out of a 21-point hole against the Celtics. Tyson, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-naeqwan-tomlin-real-gem-toughness-cleveland">Nae’Qwan Tomlin, Tyrese Proctor, and a returning Craig Porter Jr. put on their hard hats</a> to clean up the mess left behind by the core guys. It’s something Tyson and Cleveland can feel, “one thousand percent,” and, though he didn’t speak for himself Sunday, Donovan Mitchell agrees.</p><p>“That’s what gets us going, honestly,” Tyson said. “I mean, close to the end of the third, that’s what got us going, the second unit. And honestly, it’s up to all of us to feed off their energy. Don said it: the young guys and the role players, it shouldn’t be us having to bring energy every time, right? Like, everybody has to bring energy. Everybody has to pour into this thing, and that’s what made us successful.”</p><p>“We just can’t go down by 20,” Evan Mobley added. “We gotta find a way to kick into that gear that we had in the third and fourth quarter the entire game. We can’t go down that much and try to come back.”</p><p>Plus-minus isn’t always the best tell for basketball, but it told the real story in this particular instance. Holding each other accountable is necessary for the wine-and-gold to trudge through the mud and come out dry on the other side.</p><p>“Come together as a team,” Tyson said. “Do your job and just, like, compete. Want it more than the other team. I feel like teams want it more than us. There’s a target on a lot of our guys’ backs. A lot of our guys, right? And it’s everybody’s job to go at it. You want to come at us, let’s go. Let’s make this a dog fight, right? That’s how you combat it.”</p><p>“We’ve gotta just bring it every time we step on the floor,” Mobley added. “Every second of the game, we can’t let up. Can’t let them… like at the end of the first half, how they went up like that in a matter of less than a minute. You just can’t have those little slip ups, and you can’t have them compound. But we’re going to look at film, we’re going to watch it, we’re going to fix it, and we’re going to do better.”</p><p>Down 7-0 within the first 68 seconds on Sunday, Tyson called out Cleveland’s <a href="https://www.nba.com/game/bos-vs-cle-0022500302/box-score" rel="noopener">slow starts</a>.</p><p>“We have a gear that we can get to that we get to in moments when we’re in rough situations, if that makes sense,” Tyson said. “And I feel like we need to hit that gear from the jump. It’s a common theme, from the jump. Even last year, we’d never start off good. So adjusting the mindset, going into games, and then hitting that gear early and punching teams in the face.</p><p>“Because I feel like we’re just getting hit, hit, hit, and then we go, wait, wait, wait. We’re in cruise control. And then the fourth quarter comes, and we just expect a miracle comeback.”</p><p>Clearly not holding back any punches, Tyson shared that the reason he’s so upset is that he and the team know what they’re capable of. One of his biggest takeaways from the Boston loss, ironically, is that the Cavs can win any game they play.</p><p>“I mean, if you look around this whole locker room, we’ve got dudes,” Tyson said. “We say it all the time. Like, we’ve got [them] 1-15. And obviously, we have three of some of the best players in the NBA. Our starting five, I’ll put them up with anybody in the NBA. One of the most talented teams in the NBA.</p><p>“But talent don’t win championships. It’s all the little stuff, the grittiness, the hunger. I feel like that’s what wins championships.”</p><p>The Cavs are 12-9 and have a chance to rectify things Monday night on the second night of a back-to-back against the Indiana Pacers.</p><p>“Everyone wants to be better, everyone wants to win, everyone wants to be the best we can be, but right now we’re not,” Mobley added. “And so, we’ve got to find a way on how we going to fix that.</p><p>“Frustration might help, honestly, a little bit. You use it to fuel getting better. It’s a type of energy that is created, and you just use it as fuel, and you get better, and you just can’t have it be a flaw.”</p><p>Hopefully, Tyson’s message doesn’t go in one ear and out the other for the rest of the group, because <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-cleveland-let-last-season-go-early-lull">it needs to be heard</a>.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Cavs beat the Indiana Pacers 120-109 with a more recognizable-looking attack. A sight for sore eyes offensively. Combining for 34 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds, Garland and Tyson provided a huge lift together with their performances and positive attitudes.</p><p>“The excitement was up,” Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson said postgame, noting the crowd’s energy. “Those two guys bring a lot of life, a lot of life to the arena, a lot of life to the team, a lot of life to the bench. So, I think without them, we’re a little more business. Don [Mitchell]’s business like, Evan [Mobley]’s business like. They can be goofy and fun and have a laugh, even in tense moments. I know it helps me. It helps me to calm down sometimes. Those guys are great spirits.”</p><p>“JT has high energy. DG as well,” Mobley added. “Just happy guys, and we’re definitely excited for them to come back and play with us on the court. So I feel like that just brings more life to the team.”</p><p>Garland had a heck of a first half, where Cleveland had drive-kick-swing-swing possessions going like it was 2024-25. He found De’Andre Hunter and Dean Wade in the corners, and from there, it was popping all around the perimeter. Four starting Cavs had at least 20 points in the final box score, including Mitchell, Mobley, Hunter, and himself. Atkinson didn’t even know that until he saw the <a href="https://www.nba.com/game/ind-vs-cle-0022500048/box-score" rel="noopener">stat sheet</a>.</p><p>“I thought we had three or four possessions you want to put on the coaching highlight film, in terms of making the extra pass, extra swing pass, crisp, great spacing,” Atkinson said. “They were, like, reminiscent of stuff we had going on last year. Having those two guys back, Darius and Jaylon, really, really helps. Helps with our spacing. We can make those plays.”</p><p>Having 28 assists on 43 field goals seems somewhat pedestrian at first glance, but Cleveland was driving into Indiana’s space for the entirety of the game. You wouldn’t know it by the paint attempt numbers, but rather how many sprayouts came off those initiations.</p><p>“It is getting there,” Garland added of the wine-and-gold’s offense. “It takes time, though. We’re still not even a hundred percent healthy yet, so it’s going to take some time, especially when everybody else gets back. It’s still going to take a little bit more. But yeah, we’re starting to get some flashes of some stuff from last year.”</p><p>Garland was glad to come out of the game unscathed despite a “little stinger” toward the end with his left toe. He was grateful to “come out alive, come out healthy.”</p><p>Tyson was a bright spot in his own right, picking up right where he left off before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-donovan-mitchell-evan-mobley-injury-report-heat">suffering a concussion against the Heat</a>.</p><p>“It was good to be back and to compete with my brothers and ultimately win,” Tyson said postgame. “My love of the game, I love this thing, right? I want to play a long time. I want to be able to take care of my family. He moved without the ball, made himself available, and had as good a performance finishing around the rim as he’s had since being drafted to Cleveland last year.</p><p>Tyson was all over the place on a night when the Cavs couldn’t sniff the ball. He was playing aggressively on both ends, diving to the floor to secure extra possessions and giving his all to keep Cleveland in a game it shouldn’t have been in.</p><p>However, offense isn’t Tyson’s primary focus for this wine-and-gold squad. With a ton of talent on the roster, he and Craig Porter Jr. have drawn the role-player cards. They’re there to defend hard, make the opponents work for their buckets, and grab rebounds.</p><p>In a way, his postgame interview after Monday’s blowout win in Detroit foreshadowed his next performance.</p><p>“My whole career, I’ve always just been score, score, score. Offense, offense, offense,” Tyson told ClutchPoints and two other reporters after the victory. “I’ve never been known as a defender, so to be able to shift that… that’s why I say I’m not worried about the offensive stuff. The offensive stuff is gonna come within the flow, and whenever I get more reps with them.</p><p>“I’m not used to playing defense at this high of a level, but I mean, that’s the role I have and that’s the role I’ve got to take on for this team. They instill confidence in us to do it, and I trust my teammates. They have my back. So that’s all I can do.”</p><p>Cavs All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell has spoken about his respect for Tyson since the beginning of training camp.</p><p>“Man, that kid, he’s hungry,” Mitchell stated. “I said this last year, I’ve never seen a kid come out and lead his team in scoring in college, shoot every shot, every single shot, and then come in here and say, ‘Hey, I want to play in the half roll, I want to screen and get you guys open. I want to defend.’ Like, that mentality is the sense of maturity that you want to have out of a young guy.”</p><p>On Wednesday, according to NBA Stats, Tyson guarded Derrick White, Payton Pritchard, and Jaylen Brown each for over two minutes of matchup time. Among those assignments, he only allowed one White three-point make. Pritchard missed all four of his attempts, while Brown didn’t get a shot off against him.</p><p>Defensive tracking data can be tricky, but <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-news-how-did-jaylon-tyson-fare-second-year-debut-start-knicks">Tyson has been as aggressive as anybody</a> on the ball defensively through five games. Take 21 total fouls as evidence of that. However, it also makes sense glancing at <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1642281/head-to-head" rel="noopener">the list of his guard assignments</a>: Cam Thomas, Cade Cunningham, Jalen Brunson, Brown, and White.</p><p>“A little handsy,” Tyson said. “I like to play physical. Just those little plays, those little tick-tack fouls I’m doing, I need to take that away. But I feel like I’m competing at a high level, and that’s all I can ask for myself as I long as I play hard, and I live with the results.</p><p>“It just comes with playing the game and understanding the game, understanding player tendencies. I feel like personnel is a big thing for me that I need to learn. Obviously when I was in college, we didn’t do as much as that. So understanding player personnel like Jalen Brunson, like Cam Thomas, they like to do foul baiting, so knowing when to show your hands. But like I said, it’s going to come with time.”</p><p>On the other hand, Tyson’s ball pressure is a key reason why Cleveland ranks fourth in the NBA with 9.8 steals per game.</p><p>Being among the league leaders in fouls can be perceived as a negative, but Cleveland head coach Kenny Atkinson is “fine with it.”</p><p>“Just not the opening night, fouling four three-point shooters. Those we’re not fine with,” Atkinson said. “But there’s a trade-off, right, when you’re picking up higher and you’re more physical, it’s a trade-off. Like, you want everything now, everything now. You want to be this. You want to be that. But understand that it’s gonna be a process, right? You’re gonna have to take baby steps, baby steps. That’s how this league is.</p><p>“I feel like that’s the process for me. Just understanding, ‘Okay, this year: hit open shots, play defense, bring energy.’ Simple as that, right? Everything else will just fall in line as I get comfortable with these players.”</p><p>Offensively, Tyson knows he has a lot to work on. Whether it’s timing up his cuts correctly, staying spaced at the right moments, or making the right “yellow” reads, it will all come with experience.</p><p>Before this season, he told the Cavs he would do whatever it takes to get on the court, and so far, despite the bumps along the way, the returns have been promising.</p><p>“He’s going to take a big step for us, and a lot of people are going to start to realize who Jaylon Tyson is after this season,” Mitchell said in early October.</p><p>“I haven’t played my best basketball,” Tyson added. “A lot of indecisiveness, a lot of undisciplined plays. It’s been solid, I would say, but I know what type of player I am and I know what I can be, and I don’t think I’ve hit that standard yet. Jalen Brunson was his primary assignment, picking the New York Knicks star up full court and challenging him. According to NBA.com’s matchup data, Brunson went 1 of 3 from the field, missing both of his three-point attempts and drawing two fouls with Tyson <a href="https://www.nba.com/stats/player/1642281/head-to-head" rel="noopener">as his defender</a>.</p><p>Despite the four fouls committed and the limited time because of them, the Cavs were pleased with how Tyson stepped up.</p><p>“I was really happy with the way he was guarding,” Donovan Mitchell said after the Cavs’ 119-11 loss in New York. “Really, his first real start in a high-intensity situation like this, and you see how he’s playing.”</p><p>Watching the film back, the day following, his teammates doubled down on that praise.</p><p>“Obviously, Jalen is one of the best guards we have in the league, so he’s not gonna have too many tougher assignments than that,” Lonzo Ball said after Thursday’s practice. “But I think he came in with the right mindset, the right energy. He just got called for some ticky-tack fouls early, and he can’t let that affect him. But I’ve got a lot of confidence in him moving forward for sure.”</p><p>“I feel like he did great,” Tyrese Proctor added. “I mean, that’s one hell of a guy to guard, especially opening night in the Garden. Obviously, Brunson’s a great player. I thought JT did the job he needed. He’s so quick and low to the ground, it’s obviously going to bump you off balance here and there, but I think for the most part, he did a really good job.”</p><p>Defense is where <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/cavs-training-camp-notes-jaylon-tyson-rotational-leap-coming">Tyson wants to make his mark first and foremost</a>. Aiming to bring the energy, speed up the opposing team’s best players, and make his assignments as uncomfortable as possible, he used the term “pest.”</p><p>“[Be] that player that you don’t want to play against,” Tyson said the day before the game. “Physicality, kinda similar to what Indiana did to us last year. Being something like that. Just get ’em out of rhythm.”</p><p>Despite the end result of the game, Tyson delivered on that promise. Instead, Donovan Mitchell pleaded his case for the wine and gold to pick up the bats and gloves in the spirit of the MLB postseason.</p><p>“These are the decisions you make as a coach when your star player comes to say, ‘Hey, we want to play baseball,'” Atkinson said Friday. “I said, ‘Okay, we can play baseball, but if we’re not gonna come over to the gym, we’re gonna have to practice longer tomorrow.’ It was amazing. We got more out of the baseball than what we ever would’ve gotten coming over here and installing: the camaraderie… It was a great suggestion by Don.”</p><p>Honoring the agreement, Mitchell and the Cavs went extra long at practice on Friday.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Jaylon-Tyson-surveys-the-court.jpg"><figcaption>Ken Blaze-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>Jaylon Tyson has an open seat at the table.</b></h2><p>On multiple occasions since the end of last season, Atkinson has gone out of his way to say good things about Jaylon Tyson’s place in Cleveland. He’s investing a lot of belief in the 22-year-old swingman heading into his second season.</p><p>“He’s taken a step physically,” Atkinson said Friday. “He’s always in great shape, but he looks stronger, finishing better at the rim. I think you remember last year, sometimes he had some problems finishing at the rim. He just told me and said his shot feels as good as it’s ever been.”</p><p>Tracking shooting in open gym, Tyson ranked fourth among the team’s long list of <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/CLE/2025.html#per_game_stats::12">3-point threats</a>.</p><p>“He’s doing all the things role players should do, cutting, he’s an excellent rebounder, so doing that too, running the court,” said Atkinson, who’s attempting to help Tyson understand he won’t have the ball in his hands as much as he did in the summer and in college.</p><p>“Man, that kid, he’s hungry,” Mitchell added. “I’ve never seen a kid come out and lead his team in scoring in college, shoot every shot, every single shot, and then come in here and say, ‘Hey, I want to play in the half roll, I want to screen and get you guys open. I want to defend.’ Like, that mentality is the sense of maturity that you want to have out of a young guy. And I respect that.”</p><p>Spida’s challenge to Tyson is to guard him each time in live runs and battle with him back and forth.</p><p>“He’s one of our best in shape, most in-shape players that we have right now,” Mitchell said. “He’s made me a better player. When you have a guy that’s [22] years old, being able to do that shows what level of maturity, shows that he’s ready. He’s hungry, he’s working on his jump shot, working on being smart, showing his hands, not fouling. I think that’ll come a long way for us. He’s going to take a big step for us, and a lot of people are going to start to realize who Jaylon Tyson is after this season.”</p><p>Tyson revealed that he studied what happened in the Indiana Pacers series to see where he could help, like defending tough assignments, knocking down open triples, and being a secondary ball-handler: “I kinda just found that little slot that I could plug into, and that’s what I’ve been rolling on all year.</p><p>“Night and day better,” he added on Media Day about his progress. “I feel like I’m in great shape. I feel like I’m one of the best-conditioned players out here right now. I have a different mindset. I have a mindset of, ‘I’m gonna try to guard the best players.’ I’m more confident in my abilities, understanding the system. In the NBA, there’s a lot of games, a lot of opportunities; you’re gonna have your best games and you’re gonna have your worst games. Isaac (Okoro) had his thing: day by day. I kinda use that a lot. That helps me get through the rough days and the best days.”</p><p>“I mean, there’s no time like the present, right?” Mitchell added. “Like, we can sit here and kind of try to get him along and show him film, but we’re throwing him right in there. And you don’t just do that for guys who aren’t necessarily ready. I think it’s something where you have to have that trust and belief in order to be able to do that. I think he’s earned that. That’s respect to him and what he’s done to the point where I can tell him to get his ass out the gym to go sit down. But he’s got great energy, great vibes, positive always, and wants to be great at what he does, and I respect that.”</p><p>Atkinson knows this will be a completely different level of throwing him into the fire.</p><p>“Hopefully, this blossoms into a steady role for him,” Atkinson added. “You’ve got to prove it. The only way we can evaluate that is through regular-season games; we’re not gonna take three games and evaluate it. But sample size, you start getting 10, 15 games, then we can start looking at it. He’s understanding better what we’re looking for from him… My feeling is he’s gonna make a jump, right? He’s gonna be more comfortable out there… I’d be surprised if he doesn’t cement himself in the rotation. I really would.”</p><p>On Monday, Tyson expressed his gratitude for how his team has backed him: “It means everything to have approval from your head coach, support from everybody. It means the world. I’m excited for the games to start so I can show what I’ve been working on.</p><p>Atkinson is thrilled with how the younger talent has performed overall. He <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/cleveland-cavaliers/craig-porter-jr-exclusive-taking-initiave-cavs-prove-yourself-league">mentioned Craig Porter Jr.</a> and Tyrese Proctor and then acknowledged Nae’Qwan Tomlin’s progress when ClutchPoints asked about the two-way forward.</p><p>“We’re gonna have some decisions with these young guys,” Atkinson said. “There’s a group of ’em that are gonna battle it out. I think Jaylon’s got a little more experience, but we’re gonna have some interesting decisions to make with those young guys and see who breaks into the rotation.”</p><p>Everybody will have the day off to enjoy Florida on Saturday before wrapping things up on Sunday with one last session.
