After all, they made huge moves this offseason already.</p><p>They <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/kevin-durant-trade-grades-7-teams-blockbuster" rel="noopener">traded for Kevin Durant</a>, re-signed Fred VanVleet and Jabari Smith Jr. Then to start free agency, they signed two of the top available role players in the market, i.e. Clint Capela and Dorian Finney-Smith.</p><p>But to those who know what Green had to get through to get to this point, him playing another season is one of the most inspiring news that person read (or heard) that day.</p><h2><b>Jeff Green was forced to retire in 2011 after a failed physical</b></h2><p>Entering his fifth season in the NBA, Green signed a one-year, $9 million deal with the Boston Celtics once the NBA lockout was over. He performed the usual examinations he did each season. However, instead of getting the typical stamp of approval, Green received news that he never thought was possible.</p><p>After further examination, doctors found that he had an aortic aneurysm. The condition wasn’t common, and it was one that would impact both his basketball career and life in general. He was only 25 years old at the time, showed no symptoms, and only missed 13 of his first 328 regular-season games.</p><p>Green opted for surgery in January 2012 and spent over 24 hours in the operating room. The operation isn’t normally that long, but in an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42YyZhLW1Fs" rel="noopener">interview with Kristine Leahy</a>, Green revealed that he had to go back into surgery because of internal bleeding.</p><p>“What I was told was, when I came out of surgery, I had to go back into surgery because I had internal bleeding,” Green said. “That’s something a lot of people didn’t know.”</p><p>To Green, he considers the day of his surgery as his second birthday each year. It was a surgery that left him with a nine-inch scar down his chest and a long journey of rehabilitation.</p><h2><b>Jeff Green returned from heart surgery better than ever</b></h2><p>Fearful that his NBA career would be over, the Celtics actually signed Green once he was officially cleared to play. It was a contract similar to what he initially got before the surgery at $9 million a year. Only this time it was long term, inking a four-year, $35 million contract.</p><p>In his first campaign back after taking just a full year to recover, Green played 81 games for the Celtics. He’d even start 17 of those games and averaged 12.8 points playing 27.8 minutes a game.</p><p>Fast forward to today, Green has won an NBA title with the Denver Nuggets and played with different legends that changed the game. From Durant, LeBron James, Nikola Jokic, James Harden… Whatever role, city, or jersey that was on his chest, he never lost his place in the league. Over his career, Green has <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/player/earnings/_/id/2720/jeff-green" rel="noopener">made over $100 million</a> in contract earnings.</p><p>Green’s garnered a bit of a reputation as a journeyman, playing for 11 teams the last 18 years. Sometimes he was asked to be a starter. During his early 30s, other teams asked him to be a role player. On other teams, he was asked to be more of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/houston-rockets/rockets-jeff-green-late-career-resurgence-provides-leadership-newfound-depth" rel="noopener">a veteran voice in the locker room</a>.</p><p>Whatever he was asked to do, he did it at a high level. This, unfortunately, has backfired. Landale hasn’t quite been the quality backup big the Rockets hoped he would be. They needed a Plan B. This consisted of Jeff Green’s insertion into the lineup as an undersized big playing the five to replace him. How has this worked out? Well, it’s actually working better than expected.</p><p>While the baseline stats may <a href="https://www.chron.com/sports/rockets/article/jeff-green-bucks-highlights-18594037.php">not show his impact</a> this season (6.6 points, two rebounds, 53.6% shooting in 16.4 minutes), Green does much more than what the numbers may show. Green’s IQ as a player is still sharp. He can get into the lane, space the floor, and make timely cuts for a pass inside or on the wings. A notable game came against the Milwaukee Bucks. Green jumped back into the fountain of youth, scoring 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including an impressive drive to the basket guarded by Brook Lopez, who was a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year last season. Playing 34 significant minutes, Green helped lighten the shorthanded Rockets.</p><p>Utilizing his placement on defense, no matter the size, Green is still capable of closing on players down in the post or on the perimeter. Franchise star Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves went 0-of-3 on isolated shots when guarded by the 16-year veteran.</p><h2><b>This shouldn’t be the answer</b></h2><p>In whatever way he scores—the post, floaters off the dribble, or on a catch-and-shoot three — Ime Udoka has his trust and Green is always ready to answer the call. Sure, you could call this overachieving. This is certainly more than what he was initially asked to do, but when might this effectiveness at his age begin to wane? Houston still needs a quality backup center with adequate years to play in their NBA career, and Green shouldn’t be solely the player the team relies on to play an undersized center. As the trade deadline looms, the Rockets need to stick with looking at sellers, specifically the ones who would benefit from giving away a quality backup big.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Playing with 11 different franchises since entering the league in 2007, 12 if you count the Seattle SuperSonics and Oklahoma City Thunder as two different teams, Green’s experiences and leadership proved to be invaluable to the Nuggets.</p><p>Entering the offseason as an unrestricted free agent, it was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/rockets-news-houston-continues-busy-free-agency-lands-nba-champion" rel="noopener">originally reported</a> that Green agreed to a one-year, $6 million contract with the Houston Rockets. With the team <a href="https://www.nba.com/rockets/news/rockets-sign-free-agent-jeff-green" rel="noopener">officially announcing</a> their signing on Friday, it was revealed that Green actually signed a two-year, $16 million contract with the Rockets that has some stipulations for the second year.</p><p>According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, <a href="https://twitter.com/BobbyMarks42/status/1677337445577420800?s=20" rel="noopener">Green’s contract</a> carries a cap hit of $8 million for the first year of his contract and the second season is non-guaranteed. This means the Rockets could potentially waive the veteran with no financial penalties next offseason.</p><p>Out of all the teams in the league entering the offseason, the Rockets owned the most cap space and they made the most of it. They not only signed former Toronto Raptors All-Star Fred VanVleet, but Houston also brought in Dillon Brooks, Jock Landale and Aaron Holiday as experienced pieces to play alongside their young core.</p><p>As mentioned previously, Green has been the epitome of a leader and mentor almost his entire career. Everywhere he has gone, he’s been a positive influence, which is one of the main reasons why the Rockets wanted to have him as an experienced veteran on their bench.</p><p>Now through 15 seasons in the NBA, Green has averaged 12.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 33.7 percent from three-point range over the course of his career. A maximum effort defender who has a high IQ and understanding for the game, the 36-year-old forward will likely act as an extension of Houston’s coaching staff for the upcoming season.</p><p>The Rockets are a young, dynamic team that added even more youthful talent this offseason when they drafted Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore.
