Now, the reason for the long-awaited trade has reportedly been revealed, and it involves Jimmy’s agent.</p><p>The Heat also reportedly <a href="https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nba/miami-heat/article311739658.html" rel="noopener">weren’t in a position</a> to receive significant draft capital in a deal for Butler, heading into last season, per the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson.</p><p>“Not proactively trading Butler before last season. A team source insists that there was no indication that Miami could have received more than one first-round pick — or a superior package — than what it ultimately obtained from the five-team trade (Andrew Wiggins, Anderson, Mitchell and a 2025 first-round pick), Jackson said. “The teams that inquired about Butler last summer, when Miami wasn’t trying to trade him, never discussed offering multiple first-round picks.”</p><p>One of the teams that expressed interest in trading for Butler, including the Warriors, last summer was the New York Knicks.</p><p>“Though the Knicks reportedly had interest, there was never a firm offer, the source said. And though the Warriors had interest last summer, the source said Golden State never presented a proposal that included multiple first-round picks,” Jackson reported. “Could the Heat have snagged two first-round picks if it had actively shopped him last summer? It’s impossible to know.”</p><p>Another source revealed that a few teams were lining up to strike a deal for Butler. However, the Heat were one year too late when they could have struck a better packaged deal in 2023.</p><p>“As one Western Conference source said, for all of Butler’s greatness, he’s an acquired taste with a limited market. (Of course, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-rumors-reason-al-horford-signing-hold-up">Golden State Warriors are the exception to the rule</a>, as they are still yet to make a move in free agency because of their inability to resolve the Jonathan Kuminga situation.)</p><p>But a few days ago, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/brooklyn-nets/nets-news-brooklyn-acquires-haywood-highsmith-heat-trade">the Miami Heat made a trade</a>, sending Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets for a second-round pick to get underneath the tax line — drawing the attention of Draymond Green in the process.</p><p>Green, who has clearly bonded with Jimmy Butler ever since the Warriors brought in the six-time All-Star in a trade back in February used this opportunity to <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1957247062312960473" rel="noopener">defend his co-star</a> while shading Heat fans in the process.</p><p>“Y’all(internet experts) wanted Jimmy to come off the bench behind dude [Highsmith]  and 5 months later The Heat traded him for a bag of chips. That’s wild,” Green wrote on his official account on Threads.</p><p>It’s not quite clear who Green is referring to and whether or not there were really Heat fans that were asking for Butler to be benched in favor of Highsmith. But what’s clear is that back then, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/miami-heat/heat-news-jimmy-butlers-agent-brings-the-receipts-after-rumors-of-star-delayed-team-flight">Heat fans were getting fed up over Butler’s behavior</a> when he did everything but actually pull off the trade himself just to piss off the Miami front office and goad them into trading him away.</p><p>Perhaps there were some Heat fans who wanted Butler to be humbled and know his place, and perhaps promoting Highsmith to the starting lineup at his expense would have done that. Everything changed when Jimmy Butler arrived, and they were able to go on a run and make the playoffs, but an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/warriors-news-stephen-curry-breaks-silence-hamstring-injury-timeline-game-2">injury to Stephen Curry in the second round</a> against the Minnesota Timberwolves hurt them a lot.</p><p>Butler seems excited about next season, and he <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1953331980814434534" rel="noopener">made an Instagram post</a> about some of his teammates and what he expects from them.</p><p>“Robin. He gonna be robbing the s— out of this motherf—— this year. Batman gonna do his job… Draymond [Green is] the Batmobile… He [does] a little bit of everything… Who else we got? I don’t know,” Butler said.</p><p>Stephen Curry saw the call, and he replied under Butler’s post with a prayer hand emoji, saying, “On the way.”</p><p>Butler didn’t put out the bat signal, so Curry may not be talking about himself when he said the comment. He may be talking about the two players that are supposed to be signing with the Warriors but are being held up by Jonathan Kuminga, which are Al Horford and De’Anthony Melton.</p><p>Once those two possibly sign, the Warriors will be in better shape than they were before free agency started.</p><h2><b>What’s next for the Warriors?</b></h2><p>It’s obvious that the Warriors are going to build around Curry, Green, and Butler for the next few years, but they haven’t been able to make many moves this offseason. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/siegels-scoop-jonathan-kuminga-standoff-warriors-final-stages">The reason for that is Jonathan Kuminga</a> with whom the Warriors have been going back and forth all summer because of an extension.</p><p>The latest update was that the Warriors offered him a two-year, $45 million contract, and it’s something he must contemplate, according to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.</p><p>“If Kuminga and his camp were to turn down this option, with the Warriors already signaling that they are no longer exploring sign-and-trade routes, the only other option left is to accept that one-year, $7.9 million qualifying offer,” Siegel wrote.</p><p>“But in doing so, Kuminga would really be limiting his overall growth for a whole year since taking the qualifying offer is bad for everyone.”</p><p>The longer Kuminga lets this go on, the more his value will most likely drop. If he signs the contract, he could give himself some flexibility and possibly be traded. At this point, Golden State appears content to run things back with the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-nba-insider-stephen-currys-cred-in-hood-oakland">core of Stephen Curry</a>, Jimmy Butler, Draymond Green, and an odd assortment of role players who don’t necessarily fit with one another.</p><p>Recently, Butler, who has never been lacking for confidence, broke down how he sees the Warriors’ star trio <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DNAg3rAui-I/?hl=en&amp;img_index=1" rel="noopener">in Batman terms</a>, with Curry being Batman, himself being Robin, and Draymond Green being the Batmobile.</p><p>“He’s the one who gets us where we need to go. He does a little bit of everything,” said Butler, per his Instagram account. “Shoot them things, somebody’s shooting at us, he’s rolling over, protecting us… Golden State, we’re on the way… I’ll tell you that.”</p><p>Butler was brought to the Warriors at the trade deadline last year from the Miami Heat in exchange for a package centered around Andrew Wiggins.</p><p>While the new-look Warriors performed very well initially upon Butler’s arrival, they cooled off down the stretch of the regular season and ultimately bowed out in the second round vs the Minnesota Timberwolves after Curry went down with an injury in Game 1.</p><h2><b>Do the Warriors have enough?</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Warriors-All-Star-Stephen-Curry.jpg"><figcaption>Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While the Warriors’ playoff loss to Minnesota can rightfully mostly be blamed on Curry’s injury, it was also clear coming into this offseason that Golden State could stand to add a piece or two to the roster in order to truly compete with teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets out west.</p><p>After all, Curry is 37 years of age and Butler will be 36 next season, so the team could certainly use more depth to prepare for any injury absences those two may endure.</p><p>Unfortunately, the Warriors were mostly hamstrung this offseason from making any meaningful moves, and at this point, the only question in the Bay Area is what the team will do about the ongoing Jonathan Kuminga saga.</p><p>Still, however that situation plays out, it’s unlikely that the Warriors will be bringing enough back to put them back on a championship trajectory.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But while he’s currently focused on an entirely different goal, he couldn’t escape the realities of what’s coming next for the Warriors.</p><p>For the two-time MVP, he has heard it all before. He stressed that they just have to <a href="https://www.nbcsportsbayarea.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/steph-curry-championship-narrative/1861982/" rel="noopener">continue to do the work</a> and iron out the kinks from their last campaign.</p><p>“I know I got hurt. But you just want to build off that for another year to build chemistry with Jimmy. You know Draymond will do his thing,” said Curry in a report from NBC Sports Bay Area’s Monte Poole. “Hopefully, some of our young guys are able to take another step. That’s every-year process. Just take what we did great, know we’re going to have to elevate that and do it more consistently for a whole year.”</p><p>Butler joined the Warriors via a midseason trade and immediately fit in, providing extra firepower on both ends. Having a full summer working together should only bode well for Butler and Curry.</p><p>The 37-year-old Curry also addressed the familiar narrative that they cannot win because their core is too old.</p><p>“We’ve heard it for even before the 2022 championship,” Curry added. “It all comes down to health. I mean, if you look at every team… (Oklahoma City) had a relatively healthy run, and that’s what you need. Like, vets get through a regular season. Try to be in a position where we’re not chasing anything down the stretch.”</p><p>Butler and Green are both 35. Buddy Hield is 32. If Golden State ends up adding <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-stephen-curry-al-horford-fit-reaction">reported target Al Horford</a>, who’s 39, the core will get even older. But that doesn’t bother Curry too much, saying he’s learned to tune out the “outside noise.”</p><p>The Warriors were poised to go on a deep run in last year’s playoffs after handily beating the second-seeded Houston Rockets in the first round. However, disaster struck when Curry hurt his hamstring against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the second round.</p><p>Curry isn’t new to adversity. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>After spending the spring and summer pushing to see Ace Bailey be drafted as high as possible in the 2025 NBA Draft, Paul George has a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-miss-summer-league-game-injury-diagnosis">new teammate on the Philadelphia 76ers: VJ Edgecombe</a>.</p><p>That’s right, despite his heavy endorsements, Daryl Morey and company decided that Edgecombe was a better fit in Nick Nurse’s scheme than the pride of Rutgers, and in his first – and to this point only – Summer League game, that opinion was vindicated to the tune of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-joins-elite-club-victor-wembanyama-jayson-tatum">28-10 double-double against Bailey and the Utah Jazz</a>.</p><p>Could there be some hurt feelings in George over the 76ers taking things in a different direction? Maybe deep down, but on his namesake show, <i>Podcast P with Paul George</i>, the max contract player had some nice things to say about his new teammate, too, noting that Edgecombe <a href="https://Twitter.com/PodcastPShow/status/1943394907860750813" rel="noopener">looked every bit like a future star</a>.</p><p>“I thought he looked good. I thought he looked good on both ends of the floor. It’s dope to see the difference between college and NBA with spacing. Because, you know, he was able to get to his midi. He was able to see space on the floor. He was spacing behind the 3-point line. He was attacking in transition. Like there’s just so much space for guys when you cross over from college to the NBA,” George explained.</p><p>“And I thought he put it all out on display. He showed flashes of stardom. I love the poise and patience in the pick and roll. That’s not something that comes natural, especially for young guys that aren’t point guards. I saw him reading when to come off fast. Kind of hesi off of the pick and roll. Getting downhill, he’s got his little Patton one-two spin turnaround jumper. There was just a lot of poise-ness around him. I thought he had a great showing. Like enough for Philly to shut him down, the rest of the summer league.”</p><p>Pretty high praise, right? Well George wasn’t done. No, he took things a step forward, noting that Edgecombe has “that dog in him” in a way reminiscent of another 76ers legend: Jimmy Butler.</p><p>“He got that dog in him. Watching him, it was like watching a young Jimmy,” George declared. “He moves like Jimmy. Kind of has that mid-range tenacity. He’s kind of got a lot of the Jimmy likeness to him, so he’s definitely going to be good.”</p><p>While Edgecombe is a tad shorter than Butler, who stands 6-foot-7 to the rookie’s 6-foot-5, the duo are both hard-working overachievers who have done everything in their power to become NBA players despite their meager beginnings. The move appeared to be a last-ditch effort by the Bucks to reiterate their commitment to Giannis Antetokounmpo, although the star reportedly wasn’t onboard with them waiving Lillard, per NBA insider Chris B. Haynes.</p><p>Antetokounmpo hasn’t been known to be that adamant of an influence on his front office as compared to other superstars around the league over the years, but recently, former Bucks center John Henson <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1940452282891682097" rel="noopener">recalled a time</a> when the Greek Freak essentially vetoed a trade regarding two All-Star players.</p><p>“There was a trade… Khris Middleton for Jimmy Butler swap – Giannis was like ‘nah we’re not doing that’ – that was only time I’ve ever seen him stand up &amp; say something,” said Henson, per SiriusXM NBA Radio on X, formerly Twitter.</p><p>It’s unclear exactly when this proposed trade would have occurred, but the story certainly fits in with Antetokounmpo’s theme of remaining loyal to his Bucks teammates over the years.</p><p>Of course, the Bucks ultimately ended up trading Middleton this past season to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Kyle Kuzma in a move that did not exactly pay dividends for either franchise.</p><h2><b>Strange times for the Bucks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Pacers-Myles-Turner-vs.-Giannis-Bucks.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While signing Myles Turner certainly made the Bucks more of a threat than they otherwise would have been after losing center Brook Lopez in free agency, Milwaukee still figures to be several tiers below teams like the New York Knicks and Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference hierarchy at the present juncture.</p><p>This season, all eyes will be on Milwaukee and whether or not Antetokounmpo will eventually ask for a trade from the franchise that drafted him in 2013 and where he grew to become one of the greatest players in NBA history.</p><p>While there is still some work to be done this offseason, at this point, it doesn’t seem that the Bucks have many avenues to make themselves that much better before the 2025-26 campaign gets underway.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He engaged in a bit of a tug-o-war with the Miami Heat front office, and in the end, got what he wanted — not just a trade to the Golden State Warriors, a team with a legitimate superstar in Stephen Curry, but also getting a huge contract extension, something the Heat did not want to give him.</p><p>Butler ended up transforming the Warriors into a legitimate contending team, only for Golden State to fall apart in the second round of the playoffs after Curry suffered a hamstring strain that proved to be too much for him to overcome in such a short period of time. He’s talked about it too.</p><p>“That’s why we started out this past season starting Trayce [Jackson-Davis] and Draymond, and we started out the first three or four games with JK at the 3 with those guys,” he continued. “To me, that was instantly not doable given everything I just talked about with shot creation and spacing, trying to survive in the modern NBA.”</p><h2>Warriors’ stars present team-building challenges</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Warriors-Draymond-Green-Jimmy-Butler.jpg"><figcaption>Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/why-steve-kerr-latest-starting-lineup-represents-warriors-peak-2024-25">Golden State’s “peak” starting fiv</a>e of Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Jonathan Kuminga, Green, and Trayce Jackson-Davis never reached those hypothetical heights, shelved for good in late October upon Curry suffering a minor foot injury that cost him three games.</p><p>Green took the floor with Jackson-Davis and Kuminga for just nine more minutes over the regular season’s remainder, according to lineup data compiled by ClutchPoints.</p><p>Unsurprisingly, early takeaways from slotting Green next to a pair of non-spacers up front loomed large to the Warriors’ lineup configurations once Jimmy Butler arrived at the trade deadline.</p><p>Green and Butler played 338 minutes together over the last 30 games of the regular season. <a href="https://www.pbpstats.com/wowy-combos/nba?TeamId=1610612744&amp;Season=2024-25&amp;SeasonType=Regular%2BSeason&amp;PlayerIds=203110,202710,1626172,1631218&amp;OnlyCommonGames=true" rel="noopener">All but six of those minutes</a> came without Jackson-Davis or Kevon Looney alongside them at center, per pbpstats.com.</p><p>Conveniently absent from that sample size? Quinten Post, whose severe limitations as a defender, rebounder, and finisher were summarily exposed under the postseason microscope.</p><p>That trio posted a <a href="https://www.pbpstats.com/wowy-combos/nba?TeamId=1610612744&amp;Season=2024-25&amp;SeasonType=Playoffs&amp;PlayerIds=1642366,202710,203110&amp;OnlyCommonGames=true" rel="noopener">stellar +13.8 net rating</a> in the regular season but was outscored by eight in just 36 minutes across the first two rounds of the playoffs, its viability versus quality competition beset by much more than Post’s inability to do what he does best.</p><p>The sweet-shooting 7-footer is a stellar draft find for the Warriors in the late second round and figures to begin his sophomore season as a nightly member of Kerr’s rotation. Rightfully so, too. Post is already one of the most prolific long-range shooters at center in the league, his rough 31.3% accuracy from deep in the playoffs on exclusively open looks notwithstanding.</p><p>Physical deficiencies may prevent him from ever becoming the “<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/403840/2018/06/22/draymonds-law-16-game-players-and-how-jacob-evans-fits-with-all-that/" rel="noopener">16-game player</a>” Golden State has long been searching for up front next to Green, though.</p><p>It’d be wildly naive to assume Post will be ready for a significant role in the playoffs a year from now considering the extent of his struggles against the Timberwolves and Houston Rockets, two teams primed to compete toward the top of the West for years to come.</p><p>Post so utterly failing his first playoff test should be instructive for Mike Dunleavy Jr. and the front office as summer approaches.</p><p>Size for size’s sake alone is meaningless in the postseason. A full-time five who does next to nothing but stretch the court isn’t enough for the Warriors. They need a big who can protect the paint, make a difference on the glass, and finish around the rim via ball-screen dives and dump-offs from the dunker spot.</p><p>“I think the biggest things are you’ve got to look at both sides of the ball,” Dunleavy said of the attributes the Dubs are looking for in a center. “How does a player of that position complement the guys we have? That’s specifically in the frontcourt [with] Jimmy and Draymond…</p><p>“We need, with the way Draymond and Jimmy can create and generally play near the rim, having somebody that they can finish near the rim or make a shot, it’s going to be important in that situation,” he continued. “Defensively, what do they bring to the table, whether it’s rim protection, whether it’s switchability, those types of things?”</p><h2>A perfect fit isn’t realistic for the Warriors</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Warriors-Stephen-Curry-Steve-Kerr.jpg"><figcaption>Jesse Johnson-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>A floor-spacing center is obviously still the dream for Golden State. They couldn’t just sorely use the additional space that archetype provides in the halfcourt but also simply more quality three-point volume in a starting and closing five bound to feature at least two questionable shooters—and maybe three depending on Kuminga’s future.</p><p>The problem? A ‘perfect’ fit is hard enough to come by for the Dubs in a vacuum amid the mitigating effects of Green and Butler’s skill <i>and</i> physical limitations as their late-30s near.</p><p>Golden State’s cap constraints and lack of sensible matching salaries in a trade make finding that floor-spacing traditional five very difficult. The steadily increasing league-wide value of those unicorns, still extremely rare, make it virtually impossible.</p><p>Go ahead and forget about Myles Turner as the Indiana Pacers eye the NBA Finals. Kristaps Porzingis could be a cap casualty of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-sends-7-word-message-after-crushing-achilles-injury">Boston Celtics’ suddenly uncertain circumstances</a>, but the Warriors don’t have the salary ballast to even enter a bidding war they’d have no chance at winning.</p><p>A lower-level option like teammate Luke Kornet, coming off the best season of his career, would be a fascinating addition, though the fan favorite seems set to return to Boston barring Golden State breaking the bank to sign him.</p><p>Why would the ascending Detroit Pistons be interested in parting with Isiah Stewart—who, following Kornet’s lead, has pretty much stopped taking threes altogether?</p><p>Bottom line: Golden State’s search for a center won’t be ending with a hand-in-glove fit. No star big man will be playing in the Bay next season as long as Green and Butler are wearing blue and gold.</p><p>But it’s not just Dub Nation that believes this team was merely one victory without Curry away from potentially hoisting the Larry O’Brien Trophy come mid-June. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-stephen-curry-title-window">Warriors’ future Hall of Famers</a> hold that confidence in more measured terms, too, ample reason for anyone to think the right role-playing five could help them vault toward top-tier contention in 2025-26.</p><p>“What we do at the position, I’m not sure. That’s not really my role,” Green said. “But what I will say is I think you always have to be looking to get better. If you’re not looking to get better in this league, you’re either getting better or you’re getting worse because everyone else is doing the same.”</p><p>The challenge for now is identifying that impact player soon and bringing him in via free agency or trade without leaving Golden State completely bereft of its spare spending and team-building assets.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
