That’s what happens when you have the best player,” he said per The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.</p><p>Edwards proceeded to untuck his jersey after the shot and shouted at the Moda Center crowd. Ingles reacted with an exaggerated wide-eyed look post the shot. However, it was his comments later that perfectly summed up what the Trail Blazers went through.</p><p>ANT’s 41 points is a franchise record for points in a season opener. He was questionable for the game due to back spasms but led all scorers at halftime with 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting.</p><p>He scored 10 fourth-quarter points on 4-of-4 shooting, the same number of makes Portland had as a team in the period. His late shot sequence was decisive: a step-back to cut it to 107–105, a three for a 108–107 lead with 3:36 left, another three for 114–112, and a Rudy Gobert dunk with 32.1 seconds remaining to close it out.</p><p>Minnesota trailed 61–57 at halftime and by seven after three because they did not get enough stops. Early foul trouble limited Gobert to under 13 first-half minutes, and Portland attacked the rim and the foul line freely.</p><p>For Portland, Jerami Grant came off the bench to top-score with 29 points as Deni Avdija produced 20 as a starter. The veteran had been sidelined for nearly a month, including a full game on the bench against his former team, the Utah Jazz, on Sunday.</p><p>Unfortunately, that game held special significance for the Ingles family. His wife, Renae, and their children, Jacob, Milla, and Jack, made the long trip from Orlando to Minnesota to watch. They have also been instrumental in establishing sensory-friendly spaces at sports venues in Utah, Milwaukee, Orlando, and Melbourne.</p><p>“Ever since he was diagnosed, it’s been what we’ve tried to do with [raising] the awareness of, like, this shit is real,” Joe Ingles continued.</p><p>Ingles spent his first eight NBA seasons with the Utah Jazz before short stints with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Orlando Magic, eventually landing in Minnesota ahead of the 2024-25 season.</p><p>After the game, the 37-year-old admitted that Jacob isn’t too interested in his basketball career. “He just wants his dad home,” Ingles told reporters.</p><p>Coach Finch’s decision ensured Ingles had a moment to cherish. But Joe didn’t play… Tonight, Chris Finch started Ingles to make sure Jacob could see his dad play.”</p><p>Starting out the game against a Pelicans team with just 19 wins so far this season, Ingles only ended up playing six minutes for the T-Wolves, missing all three of his shots from the field to go with an assist, a turnover, and two personal fouls. They kicked things off by trading a future draft pick for the draft rights to Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham, and then in free agency, they were able to pick up veteran sharpshooter Joe Ingles on a minimum contract, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-joe-ingles-reunites-rudy-gobert-mike-conley">reuniting the Australian forward</a> with former Utah Jazz teammates Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley.</p><p>With Kyle Anderson joining the Golden State Warriors, there was need for the Timberwolves to bring in a hard-nosed player who could conceivably suit up at both forward spots. Ingles certainly fit the bill; after all, the 36-year-old forward is never one to back down from a fight, and in fact, he loves getting underneath the skin of his opponents.</p><p>But one player in particular <a href="https://www.espn.com/nbl/story/_/id/40494076/australia-joe-ingles-excited-move-timberwolves" rel="noopener">will be immune</a> from Joe Ingles’ shenanigans; with Anthony Edwards being one of the most passionate trash-talkers in the game, Ingles doesn’t want to do anything to ruffle the Timberwolves star’s feathers.</p><p>“He’s good,” Ingles said of Edwards’ trash talk, per Olgun Uluc of ESPN. “I’ll save it for someone else.”</p><p>The Timberwolves have certainly become a team that’s now more annoying to deal with following the addition of Joe Ingles. Ingles is someone who never keeps quiet whenever he’s on the court, as he always has something to say to his opponents and he is never shy to let them hear about it. Perhaps Ingles can teach Anthony Edwards more of this dark art, although Edwards doesn’t seem to be in need of mentoring in this regard.</p><h2><b>Jingling Joe joins the Timberwolves</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Jazz-guard-Joe-Ingles-2-celebrates-with-guard-Mike-Conley-10-and-center-Rudy-Gobert-27-during-the-second-half.jpg"></figure><p>The Timberwolves’ interest in bringing Joe Ingles in wasn’t new whatsoever. During the 2023 offseason, the Timberwolves also expressed their desire to sign the veteran marksman, but the Orlando Magic outbid everyone with a two-year, $22 million deal amid their need for shooting up-and-down the roster.</p><p>“They actually tried to get me last year as well. … A part of it [was] having the interest for more than just: Kyle Anderson leaves and hey you can help us. Last year, they went pretty hard as well and we decided Orlando,” Ingles said.</p><p>But with the Magic setting their sights on making a huge move for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Ingles became a cap casualty, with Orlando <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-11-million-joe-ingles-decision-but-theres-a-twist">declining his contract</a> worth $11 million for the 2024-25 campaign. This then paved the way for Ingles to join the Timberwolves on a veteran minimum, and he, despite his advanced age, may be exactly the kind of player Minnesota needs as they look to build off of last year’s trip to the Western Conference Finals.</p><p>Ingles should be a welcome addition to the Timberwolves locker room due to his fun-hearted personality. It helps matters as well that he is on excellent terms with Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert, with the three playing together for the 2020-21 Jazz team that finished with the best record in the association. Moreover, unlike Anderson, Ingles has no history of punching Gobert in the face, so that should only help.</p><p>“Playing with Mike again will be awesome, obviously I know Rudy, and then helping these other guys to keep getting better,” Ingles added. “When the opportunity came up and you speak more in depth about the basketball side, especially with the stuff I’m saying – you still wanna play, you still wanna compete – it’s a basketball opportunity that was too good to give up.”</p><h2><b>Minnesota’s roster for opening night appears to be set</b></h2><p>The Timberwolves, by and large, should already have their roster for opening night set. With the signing of Joe Ingles, Minnesota now has 14 players on the roster, provided, of course, that Rob Dillingham and Terrence Shannon sign their rookie contracts soon.</p><p>In addition to Ingles, the Timberwolves also took a flier on PJ Dozier; Dozier’s career <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-bostons-shocking-plan-for-pj-dozier-bol-bol-after-3-team-trade">hasn’t been the same</a> since he suffered a torn ACL in 2021, but before his injury, he was developing into a solid perimeter defender and an overall athletic presence on the wing. Dozier has never been an average three-point shooter, and he didn’t exactly turn heads with how he played last season for Partizan Mozzart Bet of the ABA League.</p><p>Nonetheless, Dozier played well enough to earn an NBA contract; he put up 8.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game on 50/32/75 splits while tallying 1.1 steals per game. Could he earn his keep as the Timberwolves’ backup point guard following the departure of Monte Morris and the likely exit of Jordan McLaughlin?</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The seeds of optimism were shown in 2022-23 when Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero helped the team win 12 more games than it had the previous year. This past season, the young squad started to feed their success-starved fan base.</p><p>The Magic won 47 games and competed in a Game 7 in the opening round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, by far the closest they have come to winning a series post-Dwight Howard. With Banchero, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs comprising a superbly promising core, and other young players surrounding them, Orlando is quickly rising up the ranks in the oft-unpredictable Eastern Conference.</p><p>Though, this is not the time for management to just pat itself on the back and enjoy the ride. Magic president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman and general manager Anthony Parker have some cap space at their disposal, which can possibly be used to accelerate this group’s championship contention timetable. The front office’s latest move solidifies their financial flexibility with NBA free agency just a day away.</p><p>Orlando is <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1807059734052102451" rel="noopener">declining the $11 million team option</a> of Joe Ingles, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. However, the organization and the veteran forward are expected to stay engaged in talks going into next week.</p><h2><b>Magic could place high value on experience in free agency</b></h2><p>Once considered a trusty 3-and-D wing who helped the Utah Jazz topple Paul George and the Oklahoma City Thunder in the postseason several years back, Ingles faded into the background a bit with the Magic last season. He played 68 games for them in the regular season, scoring 4.4 points while shooting 43.5 percent from distance (70 made 3-pointers) in 17.2 minutes per game.</p><p>But the role the 36-year-old played in helping Orlando come of age should be properly spotlighted. He infused a necessary amount of experience and grit into this roster. Weltman could be keen on retaining those crucial intangibles for next season. Though, whether or not Ingles returns, head coach Jamahl Mosley’s squad should continue to exude toughness.</p><p>That being said, the Magic would be wise to dive into the free agency pool and fish out <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/why-clippers-paul-george-stance-is-confusing-as-76ers-magic-loom">an offensive difference-maker</a> with a stout postseason résumé. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-what-magic-offer-klay-thompson-kentavious-caldwell-pope">There are multiple names</a> that the Orlando shot-callers are reportedly eyeing ahead of what is sure to be a frenzy-filled week.</p><h2><b>Orlando’s possible offseason plans</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Kentavious-Caldwell-Pope-shouts-out-a-teammate.jpg"><figcaption>Andrew Wevers-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>The franchise has been linked to both Golden State Warriors great Klay Thompson and two-way perimeter threat Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, both of whom have six rings combined and can potentially make the Magic a more balanced unit. The team ranked 24th in the league in points per game (110.5) and 3-point percentage (35.2 percent), so either guy should assist in that regard.</p><p>Mosley could also use a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-how-wizards-blazers-trade-could-impact-magics-offseason">more seasoned playmaker</a> at the helm, as Orlando struggled to consistently move the ball around in the playoffs. It might be difficult for the Magic to address all their needs this offseason, but it is imperative they build on their landmark 2023-24 campaign. That could mean spending a ton of money, bringing back Joe Ingles, or both.</p><p>No matter what happens in the coming days, fans should relish being in this position.
