The Timberwolves star didn’t just throw down the arguable dunk of the year over him, he also hit him with a nasty crossover in the first half. But it seemed like Edwards’ mockery of Collins did not stop on the hardwood.</p><p>After the game, Anthony Edwards took some time to engage with some of his fans who made the trip to Salt Lake City. After all, back in his rookie season, the Timberwolves star already detonated for an unfathomably nasty jam over Yuta Watanabe. Bulls forward Torrey Craig, who wasn’t on the active roster, jawed at Sexton, and Sexton is not exactly someone who backs down. Things got heated to the point where Jazz big man John Collins thought it was necessary for him to intervene. However, that only escalated the tension after Bulls assistant coach Chris Fleming appeared to shove Collins, an act which Collins took exception to.</p><p>Following the Jazz’s defeat to the Bulls, which happened in heartbreaking fashion, Collins revealed<a href="https://twitter.com/DarnellMayberry/status/1765605200587608431" rel="noopener"> his side of the story</a> on his altercation with Fleming. The Jazz big man said that he was merely defending himself after the Bulls assistant fired the first shot.</p><p>“Collin and T-Craig got into a little [scuffle], they’re talking. Ran over, I’m standing there and the coach comes over and just shoves me for no reason. Y’all can go watch the film,” Collins told reporters, via Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic. “I just protected myself. Literally just standing there and dude just puts a forearm on my chest and pushing me back. The Jazz big man was clearly looking at the eye line of Torrey Craig before he felt the arm on his chest. Collins, however, in retaliation, also shoved Fleming, so it’s not like he’s blameless. Moreover, his hands were maybe a bit too high, which could have been dangerous.</p><p>Nevertheless, this is something that Collins and the Jazz will have to brush off after suffering the defeat against the Bulls despite having a golden opportunity to win the game. The Jazz missed two open three-point looks that could have given them the lead (they cut the Bulls’ lead to just two thanks to a technical free throw courtesy of Fleming’s involvement in the fracas).</p><p>For John Collins, the next few games will be huge opportunities for him to prove that he’s a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-john-collins-gets-eye-opening-trade-update-as-jazz-surge-up-standings" rel="noopener">keeper for the Jazz</a> given how depleted their frontcourt is at the moment.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With roughly nine seconds left in the game, he had an unfortunate confrontation with both Torrey Craig and assistant coach Chris Fleming.</p><p>It started out as a scuffle between Torrey Craig and John Collins. The catalyst for the conflict was the back-and-forth chirping between Collin Sexton, Collins, and Chris Fleming. Then, emotions <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-biggest-mistake-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">got the best of the Jazz</a> forward as he proceeded to use his brute force on Chris Fleming. Back when he was a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Collins seemingly had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-john-collins-shades-hawks-with-savage-comments-after-utah-trade" rel="noopener">his name in trade rumors</a> every trade deadline. Each deadline though he remained with the Hawks. This offseason he was finally moved, to the Jazz, but now it appears as if history is repeating itself. The Jazz have reportedly begun <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-from-nba-trade-season" rel="noopener">exploring potential trade options</a> for John Collins as per NBA insider Marc Stein.</p><p>Stein reports that, “league sources say that one definite in Salt Lake City is that the Jazz have continued to explore trade options for offseason acquisition John Collins, whose picture featured in our Thursday piece about the slew of wild scores seen Wednesday night.”</p><p>Such is the life for Collins in the NBA. He’s only played close to half a season for the Jazz and they’re already reportedly looking to move him. This Collins’ seventh season in the NBA after the Hawks selected him with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.</p><p>Collins played six of those seven seasons with the Hawks, battling trade rumors, until he was finally dealt. This season, he’s appeared in 31 games for the Jazz including 29 starts. He’s been averaging 13.7 points per game and 7.8 rebounds with splits of 47.6 percent shooting from the field, 37.3 percent shooting from the three-point line and 77.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line. Those numbers aren’t too far off from Collins’ career averages but the Jazz apparently want to go in a different direction.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-2023-offseason-recap-john-collins-lauri-markkanen-keyonte-george" rel="noopener">Collins once projected</a> to be an elite talent during his time with the Atlanta Hawks, things eventually fizzled out between the former Wake Forest standout and the franchise that drafted him, leading to him being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-john-collins-drops-truth-bomb-on-adjusting-to-utah-following-offseason-trade" rel="noopener">traded to the Jazz</a> earlier this summer.</p><p>Still, that hasn’t deterred Collins from <a href="https://twitter.com/SiriusXMNBA" rel="noopener">setting the bar high</a> for himself as he starts his next chapter.</p><p>“I want to be a Hall of Fame player at the end of my career,” said Collins, per SiriusXM NBA Radio.</p><p>If John Collins does end up etching his name into the record books in Springfield, Massachusetts, he will have to resurrect several parts of his game that have bizarrely diminished over the last few years despite his relatively youthful NBA age of 26.</p><p>The biggest conundrum in Collins’ game, and the one that resulted in Utah acquiring him in exchange for virtually nothing, is the fact that his skillset is such that he is really only effective around the basket on offense, but he is so undersized defensively that he must be paired with another big man at all times, which clogs the floor severely, a problem that Trae Young found out about firsthand throughout the last couple of seasons.</p><p>The easiest way that Collins can amend this problem is by improving his three-point shooting, which has oddly fallen off a cliff in the last two years, shooting below 30% a season ago.</p><p>The Jazz tip things off on October 25 against the Sacramento Kings.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With Mitchell, Gobert, and Bogdanovic all being traded before the start of the 2022-23 season, the Jazz were viewed as a younger, inexperienced team that would finish near the bottom of the league standings.</p><p>This was not the case, as the Jazz came within a few games of reaching the play-in tournament in the Western Conference. Led by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-lauri-markkanen-drops-truth-bomb-on-winning-most-improved-player" rel="noopener">2022-23 Most Improved Player</a> and first-time All-Star Lauri Markkanen, the Jazz were one of the most dynamic and versatile teams last season. Utah may be young, but head coach Will Hardy and his staff have done an excellent job of tapping into their team’s full potential, working with each player individually to make sure they fit into this team’s system.</p><p>Heading into the 2023-24 season, the goal for the Jazz is simple: Make it back to the playoffs in order to prove to the rest of the league that they are going to be a problem for many years to come.</p><p>From one year to the next, the Jazz basically have the same roster. Jordan Clarkson and Markkanen remain the focal points offensively, as Walker Kessler is the defensive anchor in the paint. Kelly Olynyk, Talen Horton-Tucker, and Ochai Agbaji are all back as well for Utah, giving this team the secondary depth they need.</p><p>The Jazz also went out and added a significant contributor to their roster, as John Collins comes to Salt Lake City after spending the first six seasons of his career with the Atlanta Hawks. An athletic power forward who can play perimeter-to-post, Collins is the perfect complimentary forward for the Jazz to have alongside Markkanen. Better yet, the former Hawk is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-john-collins-shades-hawks-with-savage-comments-after-utah-trade" rel="noopener">thrilled to be with Utah</a>, a team he can relate to.</p><p>“I’d say the one thing that has surprised me is the lack of ego here,” Collins said during media day. “It’s refreshing, you know what I mean, to have a group of guys that truly emphasize playing team basketball and that want to do so. It’s nice for me to see and exciting for me to be around. That helps me wake up in the morning motivated to go play.”</p><p>What’s interesting about Collins is that he’s an experienced veteran in this league that’s still only 26 years old. Collins fits the timeline of this team perfectly and will be playing with a chip on his shoulder, looking to prove all of his doubters wrong.</p><p>The Jazz are only going to get better as time goes on. Not only did they add Collins in order to continue growing in the West, but Utah also brought in quite a few high-potential rookies, one of which has high Rookie of the Year aspirations.</p><h2><b>Jazz offseason additions and departures</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Jazz-2023-offseason-recap-John-Collins-trade-brings-more-firepower-slide-2.jpg"></figure><p><i>Additions: F John Collins (trade – ATL), G Keyonte George (draft), C Omer Yurtseven (free agency – MIA), F Taylor Hendricks (draft), F Brice Sensabaugh (draft)</i></p><p><i>Departures: F Rudy Gay (trade – ATL), C Damian Jones (free agency – CLE)</i></p><p>It is very clear to see that the Jazz have a vision for building their team of the future. As much as they want to find success right now, their focus is on constructing a core group that can compete in the Western Conference and grow amongst one another. That is why they utilized all three of their first-round picks on versatile, intriguing players.</p><p>Taylor Hendricks was the team’s first draft pick this offseason at ninth overall. Just 19 years old and possessing a lot of length as a combo forward, Hendricks has a chance to fill a role similar to that held by Lauri Markkanen. Viewed as a power forward by many due to his shot blocking abilities and skill in the low-post, Hendricks may wind up seeing some time at small forward as well since he can stretch the floor and shoot from the wing.</p><p>Still a very unpolished and raw talent, Hendricks will likely spend most of the 2023-24 season working on his craft. It would not come as a shock if he spends some time in the G League if there are not minutes to be had right away behind Kelly Olynyk and Markkanen.</p><p>A handful of picks later, the Jazz were able to grab Keyonte George with the 16th overall selection. George was a player Utah had their eyes on all throughout the pre-draft process and that is because they viewed him as a successor to Donovan Mitchell at the shooting guard/point guard positions. While he did not necessarily show it a whole lot at Baylor, George is an all-around playmaker and one of the better score-first players from this 2023 draft class.</p><p>A confident, young, and dynamic guard who can play with or without the ball in his hands, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-summer-league-biggest-winners" rel="noopener">George stood out amongst all rookies</a> at Summer League this offseason, averaging 21.7 points and 6.3 assists per game while shooting 52.3 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from three-point range in three games. All the spotlight this season is on Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren in the race for Rookie of the Year, but <a href="https://youtu.be/bbBBt82W9lE?si=jcnXB_A8QENhwyJe" rel="noopener">George believes</a> he will be the one who ends up with this illustrious honor.</p><p>“For myself, I set really high goals,” George told reporters at media day. “I want to be Rookie of the Year. As far as the season, I want to get better each and every day… Just try to not only be the best version of myself, but try to bring the best version out of this team.”</p><p>Aside from Hendricks and George, the Jazz also drafted Brice Sensabaugh, an offensive-minded wing who is currently recovering from a knee injury. Like Hendricks, Sensabaugh will probably spend most of his rookie year working on his craft and getting adjusted to the NBA game.</p><p>Both Collins and George have a chance to make an impact from Day 1 with their new team, especially given that they can provide the Jazz with a sense of comfortability on the offensive side of things. One of the biggest struggles Utah faced last season was their lack of productivity when either Markkanen or Clarkson were out of the game.</p><p>With two capable secondary scorers, one of which is a rookie who could grow into a primary scoring option in the backcourt, the Jazz will have a lot of ways to break down their opponents entering the 2023-24 season.</p><h2><b>2023-24 season outlook</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/Jazz-2023-offseason-recap-John-Collins-trade-brings-more-firepower-slide-3.jpg"></figure><p>The Jazz have a chance to be a complete wild card this season. With how talented the Western Conference is, it would not come as a shock to see them remain the same as they were last season in terms of record. Then again, this team is young and only going to get better, so nobody should be shocked if they take that next step now and make the playoffs.</p><p>John Collins seems to be a perfect fit at the power forward spot for this franchise, plus there is a lot to like about the size and length this team possesses. At the end of the day, all it takes for young teams to find their stride in this league is time. The Jazz know this, which is why they are going to do everything they can to <a href="https://theathletic.com/4913172/2023/09/30/utah-jazz-training-camp-will-hardy/" rel="noopener">develop the youth</a> on their roster while also utilizing their experienced veterans to push everyone every single day.</p><p>“Our goal as a staff is to figure out how this group fits together,” Hardy stated this offseason, via The Athletic’s Tony Jones. “We have new pieces and new roles, and we are going to try and take this team at face value. But that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to go out there and try and win every night. The Jazz sent Rudy Gay and a first round pick to the Hawks in return. A borderline All-Star caliber player, Collins will help bolster the Jazz frontline. After spending the first six years of his NBA career with the Hawks, Collins is going to have to adjust to a brand new environment, something he hasn’t had to do since he was a rookie. Collins admitted that it’s going to be a little bit difficult as per Sarah Todd of The Desert News.</p><p>“It’s pretty difficult in the sense of feeling like a rookie again,” Collins said. “Not in terms of obviously my my experience in the NBA, but it’s a new home, new coaches, new everything, new teammates, and it’s hard to adjust to new. I have to adapt to a bunch of things that I wasn’t used to doing in Atlanta, and that’s part of the game, and I’m embracing it because it’s a new chapter for me and it also allows my game to grow.”</p><p>In the Jazz’ first preseason game against the Los Angeles Clippers over the weekend, John Collins finished with five points and four rebounds in 18 minutes of play. It’s nice for me to see and exciting for me to be around. That helps me wake up in the morning motivated to go play.”</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-hawks-jazz-trade-involving-john-collins" rel="noopener">Collins’ fraught Atlanta tenure came to an end</a> on June 27th, when Utah acquired him in exchange for Rudy Gay and a second-round pick—an effective salary dump by the Hawks. Atlanta had basically been trying to move Collins ever since he put pen to paper on a five-year, $125 million contract extension in the summer of 2021. But his value quickly declined after career-best seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21, Collins’ shooting struggles and declining usage only adding to underlying friction between he and franchise player Trae Young, one of the most ball-dominant players in the NBA.</p><p>Like Utah did last season under Will Hardy, the Hawks are turning a new page in 2023-24, the first full season of Quin Snyder’s tenure on the sidelines. The early signs about Young’s buy-in and Atlanta’s improved culture are certainly encouraging.
