The Sacramento Kings are reportedly in trade talks for Collins, who knows he could join the Kings between now and February 6.</p><p>Collins addressed the trade rumors, per The Salt Lake Tribune’s Andy Larsen.</p><p>“I saw some rumors, but I definitely didn’t hear that,” Collins said. “Whatever Sacramento is doing, that’s, you know, their prerogative, if it involves me or not. Obviously, I would have found out. But I’m kind of happy I just didn’t have that news — sorry, nothing against Sacramento — just kind of happy I didn’t have that news hit my phone. I’ve just got to continue to be the best professional.”</p><p>Either way, whether he’s staying with the Jazz or not, Collins says he’s prepared for anything.</p><p>“It’s a Catch-22. It’s something that I try not to think about because I would get lost in it. And that’s why I just say I’m just happy that I found a nice group of guys here who can talk me through all of the trade rumors. You know what I mean?” Collins said. “Because this is not an easy thing mentally, to think about whether it might be a better situation or worse situation, and whatever situation is out there, it’s not my current one. So it’s hard for me to think about that and focus.</p><p>“So I just really try not to think about it and try to be the best pro I can. Aside from <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-mike-brown-fired-amid-disappointing-season">firing Mike Brown after a 13-18 start to the year</a>, All-Star guard De’Aaron Fox is now the focus of conversations leading up to the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline. However, on top of all the drama, the Kings are still exploring the trade market for ways to improve, leading them to serious talks with the Utah Jazz about big man John Collins, league sources told ClutchPoints.</p><p>The Kings have been browsing the trade market for frontcourt help over the last several weeks. Collins, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-john-collins-becoming-prime-jazz-trade-candidate">who the Jazz have made available</a>, is an athletic frontcourt option who has put together a very respectable season to this point. His athleticism and rebounding abilities are what make him a viable secondary option next to Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and DeMar DeRozan.</p><h2><b>Kings, Jazz talk John Collins trade</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Utah-Jazz-forward-John-Collins-20-drives-between-San-Antonio-Spurs-center-Victor-Wembanyama-1-and-forward-Julian-Champagnie-30-during-the-fourth-quarter-at-Delta-Center-on-October-31.jpg"><figcaption>Rob Gray-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Even before Brown was fired by the Kings on Dec. 27, this organization had been searching for high-level upgrades with the mindset of leveraging Kevin Huerter and Trey Lyles, sources said. These two players combine to make $24.8 million this season, creating a wide margin for the Kings to search the trade market with.</p><p>Collins emerged as their top trade target in recent weeks, sources said. Utah had been seeking a first-round pick for Collins and was willing to accept such from Sacramento with little protection on it. All that was needed was a formal agreement from both sides, but ultimately, conversations were put on hold in the final steps of negotiations.</p><p>It is unknown at this time if the two teams will revisit talks on Collins ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline.</p><p>In a total of 28 games this season with the Jazz, Collins has averaged 18.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game while shooting 53.1 percent from the floor and a career-high 44.6 percent from three-point range. The 27-year-old power forward is in the fourth year of a five-year, $125 million contract he originally signed with the Atlanta Hawks in 2021. He owns a $26.6 million player option for the 2025-26 season.</p><p>Due to the impact that he can make offensively right away in Sacramento and not tying up the organization’s financials long-term, Collins would make a lot of sense for the Kings to have in their backcourt. Sabonis and Lyles are currently the Kings’ only center options, with veteran Alex Len being out of the rotation.</p><p>Collins has missed a slew of games for the Jazz in recent weeks due to an undisclosed illness. Many of Utah’s players have been held out of the lineup as of late ahead of the trade deadline due to various ailments. It is worth mentioning that Collins is expected to return and play on Thursday night against the Minnesota Timberwolves for just the second time since playing on Jan. 4 against the Miami Heat.</p><p>The only game Collins has played since this matchup with the Heat was on Jan. 22 against the Oklahoma City Thunder, when he had a team-high 22 points and 12 rebounds in 26 minutes.</p><p>A lot of uncertainty faces the Kings heading into this season’s trade deadline. But they can be one of the most talked-about teams heading into the NBA trade deadline in February, with star forward John Collins already becoming an intriguing Utah asset that many view <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/sunday-best-all-my-latest-trade-talk?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=152376939&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;triedRedirect=true&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">has a good chance of being moved</a>.</p><p>“The leaguewide presumption about the Jazz nonetheless persists that Collins — like fellow veterans Jordan Clarkson and Collin Sexton — is a prime candidate to be dealt between now and the Feb. 6 trade deadline by Jazz CEO Danny Ainge,” NBA insider Marc Stein wrote.</p><p>“Collins, though, learned how to cope with such chatter and uncertainty through numerous transactional cycles after landing his Atlanta deal and, to his credit, has been a source of consistency (and efficiency) for a team that is known to be prioritizing draft position above all this season as Utah plots its course to build out a sustainable core around star forward Lauri Markkanen,” added Stein.</p><p>Collins, who was traded by the Atlanta Hawks to the Jazz in 2023 in exchange for Rudy Gay and a second-round pick in 2026, is earning $26.58 million in the 2024-25 NBA season. Prior to the Lakers game, Collins is averaging 17.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocks while shooting 53.5 percent from the floor.</p><p>He is still not a real threat from behind the arc, as he’s taking just 2.8 attempts from behind the arc per game, but Collins is a big asset for Utah on both ends of the floor. In Utah’s first 19 games, Collins was tied with Lauri Markkanen in terms of win shares (1.4) while ranked first on the team with a 21.2 player efficiency rating.</p><p>At 27 years old, Collins has plenty of prime seasons in front of him, but the Jazz appear to have considerable interest in trading the former Wake Forest Demon Deacons star rather than keeping him as part of the franchise’s ongoing rebuild.</p><p>Collins arrived in the NBA in 2017 when the Hawks selected him 19th overall in the first round of that year’s NBA draft.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Luka Doncic was still around anyway to lead the way. But the 2-8 Jazz managed to play above expectations all night long despite the absence of Walker Kessler as well as the early exit of Lauri Markkanen, stealing the win, 115-113, courtesy of a John Collins slam.</p><p>With the game tied up at 113 following a Klay Thompson triple, the Jazz decided not to call a timeout to set up a play. Instead, they let Jordan Clarkson commandeer the offense as he ran down the clock. While Clarkson was isolating, the Mavericks had a bit of confusion on the help side, with Doncic and Quentin Grimes not paying attention. With Doncic <a href="https://x.com/statmuse/status/1857277756389662794" rel="noopener">having 37 points</a> on the night, everyone in the building knew that the ball was going to his hands. The Jazz defense adjusted accordingly, sending late help to Doncic as he chiseled his way towards the basket. This forced Doncic to swing the ball to Naji Marshall on the corner, and Marshall promptly threw up an airball, sealing the win for the Jazz.</p><p>It looked as though the Mavericks had the Jazz on the ropes late in the game as they came all the way from down 16 points to take the lead in the fourth. But the Jazz’s veterans came through. Clarkson scored a crucial and-one layup to give Utah back the lead, and then Collins had a putback dunk to give them a 113-110 advantage, setting up the turn of events that was already mentioned above.</p><p>This win puts the Jazz at 3-8 to begin the season and their first win of the year at home. Meanwhile, the Mavericks have now lost four consecutive games in the clutch in what has been a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-news-kyrie-irving-admission-after-loss-nuggets">heartbreaking way</a> for them to follow up their run to the NBA Finals last season.</p><h2><b>The Jazz will be alright</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Jazz-guard-Jordan-Clarkson-00-reacts.jpg"></figure><p>It has been a rough start to the season for the Jazz. They seem to have skipped the portion of the season where they’re at least semi-competitive, as they have plummeted down the standings through the first few games of the new campaign. But their performance on Thursday against the Mavericks shows that they will be alright moving forward.</p><p>Head coach Will Hardy still looks like one of the best in the business, pulling the strings to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavericks-vs-jazz-predictions-odds-pick-11-14-2024">hold off the Mavericks’ hard-charging comeback</a> attempt in the end. The Timberwolves star didn’t just throw down the arguable dunk of the year over him, he also hit him with a nasty crossover in the first half. Moreover, his hands were maybe a bit too high, which could have been dangerous.</p><p>Nevertheless, this is something that Collins and the Jazz will have to brush off after suffering the defeat against the Bulls despite having a golden opportunity to win the game. With roughly nine seconds left in the game, he had an unfortunate confrontation with both Torrey Craig and assistant coach Chris Fleming.</p><p>It started out as a scuffle between Torrey Craig and John Collins. The catalyst for the conflict was the back-and-forth chirping between Collin Sexton, Collins, and Chris Fleming. Then, emotions <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-biggest-mistake-2024-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">got the best of the Jazz</a> forward as he proceeded to use his brute force on Chris Fleming. Officials had to review the incident for a while. They gave unsportsmanlike fouls to Fleming, Craig, and Collins.</p><p>The game ended with the Bulls narrowly escaping their opponents by two points. Big performances by DeMar DeRozan, Nikola Vucevic, and Ayo Dosunmu had been tainted with this unfortunate event. Vucevic also notched a monster double-double with 23 points and 12 boards. Ayo Dosunmu then ran a clinic on facilitating an offense. He dropped nine assists while scoring eight points.</p><p>Collins was also instrumental to keeping the Jazz within striking distance. He sank notched 25 points and recorded 14 big rebounds. They were down by 18 to start the period, and yet with less than 10 seconds to go in the contest, the Jazz had trimmed the lead to one and they even had the ball with the chance to take the lead.</p><p>However, what ensued for the Jazz was a tragedy of errors. After Lauri Markkanen missed a semi-open corner three, John Collins was able to retrieve an offensive board, taking advantage of the Warriors’ lack of size. However, the Dubs defenders converged quickly on Collins. Now, all that’s left for head coach Will Hardy is to <a href="https://kslsports.com/511377/john-collins-pass-golden-state-warriors/" rel="noopener">ponder about the what-ifs</a>, especially on the crucial play where Collins threw the ball into the stands.</p><p>“When John got that offensive rebound and pivoted out, I thought the ball was going out to Collin [Sexton] at the top of the key,” Hardy said, per Ben Anderson of KSL Sports. “That’s not the way that it worked out so I’ll get to spend the next five days thinking about if there was a half-second there that I could have called timeout.”</p><p>Indeed, when John Collins retrieved the ball, it took him about 2.5 seconds before he let go of the basketball. So Will Hardy definitely would have had time to call a timeout. They are the fringe of the playoff conversation, yet, are not immune to trades. Former Hawks center John Collins is a target the team may not move.</p><h2><b>John Collins could remain on the Jazz for longer than expected</b></h2><p>Collins has been Utah’s starting center amid the team’s 15-4 hot streak. While other players have arguably shined brighter, Collins has a valuable role on the squad. The notion Utah is actively trying to trade the star center <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/more-from-the-nba-trade-season-grapevine?utm_source=post-email-title&amp;publication_id=392205&amp;post_id=140742436&amp;utm_campaign=email-post-title&amp;isFreemail=false&amp;r=39f60&amp;utm_medium=email" rel="noopener">has quieted down</a>, per insight from Marc Steins’ Substack newsletter.</p><p>The Jazz were originally open to moving Collins in December amid the team’s struggles. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nuggets-michael-malone-brutally-honest-denver-embarrassing-loss-jazz" rel="noopener">Utah has put itself</a> back into playoff contention. Moreover, Collins earned the starting center spot over renowned second-year big man Walker Kessler.</p><p>Collins is finding his rhythm with the team after being traded from the Hawks during the summer of 2023. The 26-year-old averages 13.8 points, 7.7 rebounds, and shoots 38% on three-pointers halfway into the season.</p><p>If John Collins continues his solid production, he will help the Jazz further climb the Western Conference standings. Back when he was a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Collins seemingly had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-john-collins-shades-hawks-with-savage-comments-after-utah-trade" rel="noopener">his name in trade rumors</a> every trade deadline. Each deadline though he remained with the Hawks. This offseason he was finally moved, to the Jazz, but now it appears as if history is repeating itself. The Jazz have reportedly begun <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-from-nba-trade-season" rel="noopener">exploring potential trade options</a> for John Collins as per NBA insider Marc Stein.</p><p>Stein reports that, “league sources say that one definite in Salt Lake City is that the Jazz have continued to explore trade options for offseason acquisition John Collins, whose picture featured in our Thursday piece about the slew of wild scores seen Wednesday night.”</p><p>Such is the life for Collins in the NBA. He’s only played close to half a season for the Jazz and they’re already reportedly looking to move him. This Collins’ seventh season in the NBA after the Hawks selected him with the No. 19 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.</p><p>Collins played six of those seven seasons with the Hawks, battling trade rumors, until he was finally dealt. This season, he’s appeared in 31 games for the Jazz including 29 starts. He’s been averaging 13.7 points per game and 7.8 rebounds with splits of 47.6 percent shooting from the field, 37.3 percent shooting from the three-point line and 77.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line. Those numbers aren’t too far off from Collins’ career averages but the Jazz apparently want to go in a different direction.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Although <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-2023-offseason-recap-john-collins-lauri-markkanen-keyonte-george" rel="noopener">Collins once projected</a> to be an elite talent during his time with the Atlanta Hawks, things eventually fizzled out between the former Wake Forest standout and the franchise that drafted him, leading to him being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-john-collins-drops-truth-bomb-on-adjusting-to-utah-following-offseason-trade" rel="noopener">traded to the Jazz</a> earlier this summer.</p><p>Still, that hasn’t deterred Collins from <a href="https://twitter.com/SiriusXMNBA" rel="noopener">setting the bar high</a> for himself as he starts his next chapter.</p><p>“I want to be a Hall of Fame player at the end of my career,” said Collins, per SiriusXM NBA Radio.</p><p>If John Collins does end up etching his name into the record books in Springfield, Massachusetts, he will have to resurrect several parts of his game that have bizarrely diminished over the last few years despite his relatively youthful NBA age of 26.</p><p>The biggest conundrum in Collins’ game, and the one that resulted in Utah acquiring him in exchange for virtually nothing, is the fact that his skillset is such that he is really only effective around the basket on offense, but he is so undersized defensively that he must be paired with another big man at all times, which clogs the floor severely, a problem that Trae Young found out about firsthand throughout the last couple of seasons.</p><p>The easiest way that Collins can amend this problem is by improving his three-point shooting, which has oddly fallen off a cliff in the last two years, shooting below 30% a season ago.</p><p>The Jazz tip things off on October 25 against the Sacramento Kings.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
