Cassell gave him the hard truth to make him realize that it would eventually help him grow as a basketball player.</p><p>“John Wall [was] in tears, crying. He lost 25 games. It ain’t December yet. He asked me, ‘OG, is it going to get any better?’… I ain’t gonna lie to you. I looked him in the face… ‘No.’… ‘It’s gonna be bad next year too. But we gotta grow. Wall was one of the flashiest and most explosive point guards among all other prospects. He immediately made an impact on the court with his individual performances in the 2010-11 NBA season.</p><p>He nearly won the NBA Rookie of the Year award, placing second only behind Blake Griffin. Had Griffin played in the year he was drafted, Wall might’ve been named the Rookie of the Year. During his inaugural season, the Wizards rookie averaged 16.4 points, 8.3 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game. Wall was producing efficient numbers for a point guard in his first year.</p><p>Unfortunately, the team that surrounded him couldn’t maximize his potential. The 2010-11 Wizards ended the regular season with a 23-59 record, placing 13th in the Eastern Conference. With a lack of talent and a support system for a few years, it wasn’t until the 2013-14 season that the Wizards made the playoffs under Wall’s era.</p><p>The 2013-14 Wizards finally hit their stride as they finished the season with an improved 44-38 record, securing the fifth seed in the East. They beat the Chicago Bulls in the first round and won the series within five games. Sadly, they lost to the Indiana Pacers in the second round but not without a fight. Wall and the Wizards forced six games proving that all it took was a better roster to improve their performance as a team.</p><p>It’s a shame fans never got to see Wall reach the heights he could’ve achieved had he not dealt with multiple injuries.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The former NBA point guard made it known that he desires to return to the league, no matter what role he may take on. And for diehard fans of the 33-year-old, it would be a treat to see the former Washington Wizards star showcase his tricks once again.</p><h2><b>John Wall makes a bold claim</b></h2><p>Speaking of the Wizards, Wall recently <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1805738762099466703" rel="noopener">appeared on an episode</a> of Podcast P, presented by Wave Sports + Entertainment. Engaging in discourse with his former teammate Paul George, the point guard was asked by George if he considers himself the greatest Washington player of all time.</p><p>“I know we had Gil (Gilbert Arenas) here earlier in the season and he mentioned that he would give the nod to you as being the greatest Wizard of all time,” George said to Wall. “Do you feel that way yourself?”</p><p>“It’s funny bro because I do,” Wall answered. “I know how much Gil means to the city and how he embraced the community the same way I did. I feel like I’m that guy, you know what I mean? Just for going number one (in the draft) and being there, embracing the city the way I did, the way they’re embracing me, I definitely call myself the greatest Wizard.”</p><p>George also asked Wall if the latter’s number two jersey should be retired by the Wizards, and the idea was something the point guard assented to.</p><p>“That would be something I would love man,” Wall said. “For my family, I would love that. For the team that drafted me number one, that would be great. Nevertheless, Wall has quite the resume himself.</p><p>The speedy guard played a total of nine seasons for the Wizards, appearing in the All-Star Game five times and being named to the All-NBA Third Team and the All-Defensive Second Team at different points of his career.</p><p>Wall had his best season during Washington’s 2016-17 campaign, averaging a double-double of 23.1 points and 10.7 assists per game. During the playoffs, he took it up a notch, putting up 27.2 points an outing in 13 games. The Wizards made the second round of the playoffs, ending their season with a tightly fought, seven-game series against the Boston Celtics.</p><p>All in all, Wall averaged 18.7 points and 8.9 assists throughout his Washington tenure.</p><p>As good as his accolades are, Wall is remembered more for his electrifying highlights on the floor. His athleticism and craftiness with the ball resulted in acrobatic finishes at the rim, monster blocks, and bursts of speed that seemed inhuman. Recently, Wall got real on the urge he’s been feeling to join the world’s preeminent hoops league for the first time in nearly two years, according to an interview with the Podcast P Show posted to X.</p><p>Wall’s news came amid a boast from Kentucky Coach Mark Pope <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mark-pope-credits-john-wall-for-kentucky-wildcats-turnaround">thanking Wall for his contributions</a> to the Wildcat program. Wall previously stated that he was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-why-john-wall-surprised-mark-pope-hire">“surprised” by the Pope hire</a> in Lexington.</p><p>Wall’s admission will be surprising to those who forgot what the former NBA All-Star is capable of on the basketball court, but won’t be to anyone who is familiar with the many obstacles he overcame to achieve what he did during his playing days.</p><h2><b>Wall’s Striking Admission On Possible Comeback </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Wall-at-Hawks-game.jpg"><figcaption>http://imagn.com/setImages/556554/preview/19880031</figcaption></figure><p>Wall spoke on former teammate Paul George’s podcast during which he offered his striking admission. Wall worked out with current Clippers guard Bones Hyland recently as evidenced by a photo of the current and former LA guards that is getting thousands of eyeballs on X.</p><p>Wall added that he is “always studying” the game of basketball and always talking about it which speaks to the love he has for playing again, perhaps sometime soon.</p><p>The 6-foot-3, 209 pound former NBA guard was born in Raleigh, North Carolina and still has plenty of energy and dedication to give to his craft at the ripe age of 33 years old, he believes. Risacher is a 6-foot-9 small forward from France who has been mentioned alongside fellow Frenchman Alex Sarr as possible number one overall picks.</p><p>Wall may not have the same spring in his legs he had when he was selected first overall in 2010, but he does have the savvy and experience to make a roster. In the midst of countless high points over the last 80 or so years, the school has also had their lulls in success, including most recently, the four year window prior to John Calipari’s arrival on campus. Then, in Coach Cal’s first year, seemingly overnight, Kentucky had returned to their place among the blue bloods of college basketball. But it’s not just John Calipari who deserves the credit.</p><p>Coming to Kentucky in the fall of 2009 was a quartet of five-star freshman comprised Calipari’s first recruiting class at the school. John Wall, Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton, along with sophomore Darius Miller and junior Patrick Patterson, turned the Kentucky Wildcats into the most dominant team in the country during the 2009-10 regular season, and reignited a spark that had gone out completely in the Billy Gillespie era.</p><p>According to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketballs-mark-pope-expresses-grateful-attitude-towards-john-calipari">new Kentucky head coach</a> — and member of the 1996 Kentucky Wildcats team that won the National Championship — Mark Pope, it was this group that changed the trajectory of the program. And Pope was able to say this to John Wall himself.</p><p>“You think about the weight of John and his legacy here and what he means to this program,” Pope said on John Wall’s <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/nba-finals-draft-and-kentucky-coach-mark-pope/id1731134848?i=1000659623903" rel="noopener">Point Game Podcast</a>. I don’t need to tell you guys, but Kentucky was not at it’s finest moment when you and Eric (Bledsoe), and DeMarcus rolled in here. You guys fixed it, like you guys fixed it in one season with Coach Calipari, so that means a lot and that’s always going to mean a lot here at Kentucky and all of us being together is kind of what separates Kentucky from everywhere else.”</p><p>That John Wall-led group laid the foundation for what was to come over the next decade and a half at Kentucky. John Calipari built his teams largely around talented freshmen who would go on to play in the NBA, and that includes each of the four players mentioned above. The last few years <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-john-calipari-gets-real-about-pain-upset-loss-oakland">have not been kind</a> to Coach Cal and the Wildcats. The last time Kentucky made it out of the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament was back in 2019, when the Wildcats made the Elite Eight as a #2 seed before eventually falling to SEC rival Auburn.</p><p>Mark Pope has his work cut out for him, and the turnaround may not happen overnight like it did for John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and co. fifteen years ago. Pope was a captain of the the 1996 <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-mark-pope-commitment-collin-chandler-byu">Kentucky team that won</a> the national title, and after John Calipari left to coach at Arkansas, Pope was hired as his replacement. The hire has gotten some mixed reviews, and one person that is surprised by it <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/st-johns-basketball-news-rick-pitino-hints-series-goodbye-kentucky-basketball">is former Kentucky star</a> John Wall.</p><p>John Wall played for the Kentucky basketball team for just one season in 2009-10, and then he went to the NBA. He is a Wildcats legend, and he is also a bit surprised that Kentucky hired Mark Pope. He knows that Pope wasn’t their first choice.</p><p>“I <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/john-on-mark-pope-and-playoff-picks-plus-jamal/id1731134848?i=1000652601851" rel="noopener">think it’s a surprise</a>, I mean I don’t think he was one of their top choices,” Wall said during an episode of the <i>Point Game Podcast.</i> “I know they went after Billy Donovan, Scott Drew, and Dan Hurley. I think those were their main ones, Bruce Pearl was one of the ones on the radar. I don’t know too much about him, so I can’t  really speak on it, but from the press conference everybody was super excited and I know he probably got a lot of love because he was on the championship team there in ‘96 I think. … And I see he brought Tony Delk, Derek Anderson and those guys out with him, so I think that was dope.”<b><br></b></p><h2><b>John Wall will be giving a lot of support to Mark Pope and Kentucky</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Mark-Pope-4.jpg"><figcaption>© Clare Grant/Courier Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK</figcaption></figure><p>John Wall was a bit surprised by the hire, but that doesn’t mean that he isn’t going to continue to give his full support to the Kentucky basketball program. Wall is one of the most famous alums of the program, and while it will be different for him to see a new head coach take over, he still wants to build a good relationship with Pope and go to a lot of games.</p><p>“It’s going to be different for me though because I talked to a lot of Cal’s (John Calipari) assistants, a lot of people that were in the office that I knew and had personal relationships with because I played for them and was around them for a year,” Wall continued. “So it’s going to be different for me, but I think it’ll be the same love that I’ve always got, I don’t think that will ever change, now it’s just trying to build a relationship with a new coach if he’s willing for that, I don’t know how that goes, but I’m going to do everything to support them and go to games.”</p><p>It would be a big surprise if Pope didn’t want to build a good relationship with a Kentucky great like John Wall. Like Wall said, the love that he gets from the university isn’t going anywhere.</p><p>There have been a lot of surprises around the Kentucky program as of late. It was a big surprise to see the Wildcats lose in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against 14 seed Oakland. It was a big surprise to see John Calipari leave on his own after that loss and take the Arkansas job. And then like Wall said, it was also a bit surprising to see Mark Pope get hired as Calipari’s replacement.</p><p>A new era of Kentucky basketball is now underway. Some are skeptical about Pope at Kentucky, but he definitely understands how important basketball is to everybody in that state, and he knows what an honor it is to coach the Wildcats and be part of that program. Calipari decided it was time to move on, and he is now the head coach for the Arkansas basketball program. John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins are two notable former Kentucky players who played under John Calipari, and they <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/john-wall-on-calipari-leaving-trevor-ariza-on-winning/id1731134848?i=1000652008203" rel="noopener">had some thoughts</a> on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-scott-drew-timely-photo-waco-head-coaching-rumors">the Kentucky basketball fanbase</a>.</p><p>“It’s what have you done for me lately,” John Wall said, via his podcast called Point Game, presented by DraftKings. “I think you want to be wanted, you want to feel the love, you want to feel the support, you want to be wanted where you are. I think that void had just went away with the last four years of how things have went in the tournament, not going far and having certain upsets against certain teams. And I think the fanbase had just gotten annoyed. But it’s interesting because everybody praised him for what he was doing and then stopped praising him. So it’s a gift and a curse, but at the same time now that he decides he might take this Arkansas job, now all of a sudden fans are like, no we don’t want Cal to leave, we want Cal to stay, but like you kind of pushed him out.”</p><p>Those are interesting words from John Wall, who played for Calipari <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-wildcats-baylor-scott-drew-john-calipari-replacement">at Kentucky for</a> one season in 2009-2010 before going to the NBA and being drafted by the Washington Wizards with the No. 1 pick. That team lost in the Elite Eight to West Virginia.</p><h2><b>DeMarcus Cousins adds thoughts on Kentucky’s fanbase</b></h2><p>DeMarcus Cousins was Wall’s teammate that season, and he made some <a href="https://theathletic.com/5405889/2024/04/10/john-calipari-arkansas-head-coach-inside-story/" rel="noopener">revealing comments</a> regarding the support that Calipari felt he had at the end of his time with Kentucky.</p><p>“I know for a fact Coach Cal didn’t feel supported, I don’t feel like he had the school’s backing,” Cousins said, via Shams Charania and Kyle Tucker of The Athletic. “There’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes, adjusting to the modern times of college basketball now. It’s more so at the top, I just don’t feel like the support was there. This situation could have been handled a lot more gracefully, especially for as much as he’s done for them. Given the guys that have come through there, I would say these were the golden years of Kentucky basketball in the modern era.”</p><p>Calipari will move on and try to build something new at Arkansas, while Kentucky basketball is starting a high-profile search to try to land a proven winner. There is a tight race at the top for the No. 1 seed and a tense, desperate battle to avoid the NBA Play-In Tournament in the back half of the standings. Amid all the chaos and shuffling, the Los Angeles Clippers (42-25) are starting to fade back into the background a bit.</p><p>Once the hottest team in the NBA and a trendy pick to win the West, LA has now cooled off considerably. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/clippers-news-paul-georges-russell-westbrook-injury-update-will-please-la-fans" rel="noopener">Injuries</a> and inconsistent play have seemingly ended this group’s hopes of securing home-court advantage throughout the playoffs. In fact, the Clippers might not even be in the top four when the postseason starts.</p><p>A puzzling, straightforward defeat to the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday only compounds the fears fans may have about them right now. Kawhi Leonard started off red hot after scoring 17 points in the first quarter (finished with 28), but the team was held in check the rest of the way. The defense also apart, as the Hawks shot 50 percent from 3-point range (17-of-34).</p><p>Before this troubling 110-93 home loss, which is the Clippers’ fourth in its last five games, they received a vote of confidence from five-time All-Star John Wall. The 33-year-old played with Los Angeles last season and thinks it can’t be counted out for a couple reasons. Nothing but high respect for him.”</p><p>Lue continues to be among the most respected coaches in the league, showing an adeptness to handle multiple star players since he helped the Cleveland Cavaliers win a championship in 2016. But is his ability to overcome injuries to those high-end talents that makes him one of the best in the NBA today.</p><p>Although he has not been able to put everything together in LA to this point, Lue’s presence on the sidelines gives Clippers fans reason to believe this squad can regain momentum in time for the playoffs. Wall showed great promise as an athletic scorer with a high motor. Unfortunately, he dealt with ongoing injury woes from 2017 to 2020, which hampered his availability and production.</p><p>To make matters worse, Wall struggled with his mental health. Years later, Wall opens up to former Heat players Udonis Haslem and Mike Miller about his battles.</p><p>“Twice I wanted to commit suicide, but I was like ‘Man, if I take myself away from this earth, I’m failing my kids. He was then drafted by the Washington Wizards, and he had a lot of successful seasons there. He doesn’t have a team right now, but he is looking for a potential return.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-john-wall-austin-rivers-free-agency-teams" rel="noopener">John Wall has been</a> a good player at all of his stops and up until he played for the Clippers, he was still having seasons where he was averaging over 20 PPG. His numbers went down when he was in Los Angeles, but he was also playing a lot less. As Wall got older, it became harder to play so many minutes.</p><p>With the Clippers, Wall averaged 22.2 minutes per game, 11.4 PPG, 2.7 RPG and 5.2 APG. Wall was a solid contributor, and he has thought about making a return to the NBA in a similar role.</p><p>“I think the biggest thing for me is a lot of people be like <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuTxV351nQs" rel="noopener">I’m an alpha dog</a>, but for me, when I went to the Clippers I didn’t care about being the man,” Wall said during a recent appearance on <i>The OG’s Podcast W/ Udonis Haslem &amp; Mike Miller . </i>“That’s a thing I want to get out there for the people to understand, I don’t care about being the guy that was an All-Star averaging 20 and 10 before. Like I might not be that same player, but I was averaging 11 and seven in 20 minutes. So I feel like I can still help a team.”</p><p>Wall clearly isn’t concerned about being the go-to guy. He understands that he is out his of prime, but he still wants to be involved and play the game of basketball. He is averaging over 10 PPG, but for the first time in his life, he isn’t the main scorer. That happens often to guys when they leave high school and play for one of the best programs in the country.<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-news-why-john-calipari-no-plan-shorten-wildcats-rotation-ahead-postseason" rel="noopener"> Kentucky head coach</a> John Calipari <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kentucky-basketball-john-calipari-daniel-orton-john-wall" rel="noopener">and former Wildcats star</a> John Wall recently discussed Wagner and how he has adjusted to college ball.</p><p>Kentucky basketball head coach John Calipari and John Wall recently appeared on the DraftKings <i>Point Game </i>podcast, and they discussed a lot of things from the past, but they also talked about DJ Wagner’s freshman campaign.</p><p>“For DJ it’s different because DJ’s been in a role where he’s always been <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9m-5y_BHNU&amp;t=2428s" rel="noopener">a scorer his whole life</a> till now,” Wall said. “He’s learning how to be a point guard and how to run a team and it’s kind of been shaky for him and difficult for him at times.”</p><p>While this might be a different role than what Wagner is used to, he doesn’t complain. He is easy to coach, and he wants to help Kentucky win in whatever way possible.</p><p>“The greatest thing about DJ Wagner, whatever I tell him he does immediately,” Calipari said. “If I say move the ball and cut hard, he moves the ball and cuts hard, if we talk to him about defense, what he’s got to do, he does it in that moment. Really intelligent, really smart, a quick twitch, but you’re right some of his habits are I’m just driving to score, well there’s a 7 foot 2 guy in front of you, you got to drive for another reason. Two, three moves when you don’t need two, three moves just one move go by the guy and score the ball or create a shot.”</p><p>There is a lot of learning and growth that comes during that first year of college basketball, and Wagner is experiencing that right now with Kentucky. His first regular season will conclude this weekend as the Wildcats have a big one against Tennessee. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report and TNT, <a href="https://twitter.com/TheSteinLine/status/1737501382670733342" rel="noopener">10-15 teams attended</a> a Reaves and Wall workout in Orlando. He last appeared in the NBA with the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2022-23 season.</p><p>Wall’s last NBA appearance also came in 2022-23. He appeared in 34 games with the Los Angeles Clippers that season. Wall previously said <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-john-wall-bradley-beal-in-phoenix" rel="noopener">he’d be open to reuniting</a> with his former Washington Wizards teammate Bradley Beal on the Phoenix Suns.</p><p>So what teams make the most sense for Wall and Rivers?</p><h2><b>John Wall’s veteran leadership, offensive upside </b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Best_John_Wall_Austin_Rivers_free_agency_destinations_after_holding_workout_for_10-15_NBA_teams_2.webp"></figure><p>John Wall isn’t in his prime anymore. He made five consecutive All-Star teams while playing for the Wizards, and was regarded as one of the better guards in the NBA during his prime.</p><p>With that being said, he still averaged 11.4 points and 5.2 assists per game last season with the Clippers. He’s more than capable of performing at a respectable level.</p><p>Young teams that are trying to compete would benefit from Wall’s veteran presence. The Orlando Magic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Sacramento Kings, Oklahoma City Thunder, New Orleans Pelicans, and Houston Rockets could all be fits for Wall.</p><h2><b>Austin Rivers’ free agency</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/Best_John_Wall_Austin_Rivers_free_agency_destinations_after_holding_workout_for_10-15_NBA_teams_3.webp"></figure><p>Unlike John Wall, Rivers has never been considered an NBA star. Still, he’s carved out a solid career as a key role player. Rivers will have some games where he produces impressive offensive statistics. He’s also a hard-worker on the defensive end of the floor.</p><p>He’s versatile as well, meaning he can play point or shooting guard if necessary. Rivers isn’t afraid to guard anyone on defense, even if it is an opponent’s best player.</p><p>Teams searching for defensive help or dealing with injury concerns would benefit from signing Rivers in free agency. The Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, and Miami Heat are all possible landing destinations for Rivers.</p><p>Neither player will completely change the dynamic of a roster. The 33-year-old point guard is still in search of his next team. He expressed interest when asked about the possibility of reuniting with Beal, who he spent eight years with on the Washington Wizards.</p><p>“For sure. <a href="https://twitter.com/RunItBackFDTV/status/1720091098750837099" rel="noopener">That’s what I want</a>,” Wall told Shams Charania on <i>Run It Back</i>. “Me and Brad [Beal] are still brothers, we still talk a lot. A lot of people always want to make us like we’re not cool with each other. That’s the reason things happened. But we still have conversations, we still talk a lot. I congratulated him on moving there. If I could join their team, for sure, I would love that.”</p><p>If John Wall were to sign with the Suns, he would join a talented trio including Beal, Kevin Durant, and Devin Booker.</p><p>“You got three guys who can get thirty or forty any given night. Just with them, it’s about getting on the court. Most important thing in the whole league is just staying healthy, we all know that, just seeing how they gel together.”</p><p>Phoenix has yet to see its star trio all on the court together. Bradley Beal hasn’t made his regular season debut on the Suns because he’s been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-cryptic-bradley-beal-injury-update-is-bad-news-for-phoenix" rel="noopener">dealing with back spasms,</a> while Devin Booker has an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/suns-news-devin-booker-injury-update-questionable-spurs-victor-wembanyama" rel="noopener">ankle sprain</a>.
