In addition to signing veteran shooting guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-kentavious-caldwell-pope-leaving-nuggets-for-orlando">Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Orlando will</a> now retain one of its rising players for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Power forward Jonathan Isaac <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1808246137209643120" rel="noopener">re-worked his deal</a> with the team, via ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>“Orlando Magic F Jonathan Isaac has agreed on a five-year, $84 million contract renegotiation and extension, sources tell ESPN,” Wojnarowski tweeted.</p><p>Over <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-film-study-karl-anthony-towns-rendered-ineffective-jonathan-isaac-in-loss-to-magic">five seasons in Orlando, Isaac</a> has averaged 8.4 points on 44.9% shooting, with 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 blocks across 22.2 minutes per game, although he missed over two years due to an ACL tear. The 2017 sixth-overall pick figures to be an important part of the team’s rotation as it continues to rise up the totem pole in a competitive Eastern Conference.</p><p>While Isaac’s raise will be significant, the <a href="https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2024/07/magics-jonathan-isaac-to-sign-five-year-deal-after-renegotiation.html" rel="noopener">exact terms aren’t available yet</a>, via Hoops Rumors’ Dana Gauruder.</p><p>“Isaac had a non-guaranteed $17.4MM salary for next season, which was due to be fully guaranteed in January,” Gauruder explained. “The breakdown for the contract hasn’t been made public yet but renegotiating a raise for next season using cap room would give Orlando the ability to do smaller cap hits in future seasons.”</p><p>Now that the team’s major offseason moves are most likely in the rearview mirror, what will its rotation look like next season?</p><h2><b>Isaac will be a part of a well-balanced Magic squad</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Magics-Jonathan-Isaac.jpg"><figcaption>© Erik Williams-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>While Isaac will certainly get significant run after getting this much money, he may also compete with first-round pick Tristan da Silva, depending on how fast the rookie adjusts to the professional game. While the Colorado alum is listed as a small forward, his 6-foot-8, 220-pound frame could lend itself to the four spot in smaller lineups. For reference, Isaac is 6-foot-10, 230 pounds.</p><p>For now, though, Isaac will continue to back up 2024 All-Star Paolo Banchero. The Florida State alum’s rise coincides with his team’s ascension, as the Magic made the playoffs for the first time since 2019-20 last year.</p><p>Unless an unforeseen change occurs, Isaac will be part of a second unit that includes da Silva, point guard Cole Anthony, shooting guard Gary Harris, and center Mo Wagner, who Orlando also extended Tuesday.</p><p>Meanwhile, the starting lineup will most likely feature Caldwell-Pope, Banchero, point guard Jalen Suggs, small forward Franz Wagner, and center Wendell Carter Jr.</p><p>While “KCP” and da Silva are the only two newcomers, the young squad should benefit from another year of development. Upon further imagining done on Monday, Orlando received the best news possible, as <a href="https://x.com/Magic_PR/status/1762201271820255244?s=20" rel="noopener">no significant injuries</a> were shown on the MRI results, the Magic announced. Isaac is now listed as questionable for Tuesday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets.</p><p>Magic fans and everyone within the walls of this organization can breathe a massive sigh of relief with this injury update, as Isaac being down on the ground clutching at his leg on Sunday was not a good sign whatsoever. Isaac, who missed all of the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons as a result of an ACL injury, has dealt with an assortment of injuries through the years. He only played in a total of 11 games during the 2022-23 season due to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-jonathan-isaac-gets-season-ending-surgery-for-adductor-injury" rel="noopener">hamstring and adductor injury</a> he had surgery on.</p><p>So far this season, the 26-year-old forward has played in a total of 40 games, averaging 6.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while shooting 47.9 percent from the floor. Known for his defensive prowess and length, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-magic-defense-markelle-fultz-big-game-slow-red-hot-devin-booker-suns-15-point-blowout" rel="noopener">Isaac has helped the Magic</a> obtain a Top 10 defensive rating for the year. His efficiency has been at the heart of Minnesota’s success so far this season. The number one defense gets by on the offensive end through a series of screen actions, strong drives to the basket and post-ups.</p><p>Towns is at the center of all of these actions. One of Minnesota’s most frequent drivers, KAT bullies his way to the paint. His soft touch not only applies to finishes around the rim, but also on his deep range shots. The Timberwolves wouldn’t be nearly the team they are today without the seven-footer firmly in the mix. Unfortunately for the Timberwolves, Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac made that a reality on Friday night as Orlando took down Minnesota by a final score of 108-106.</p><h2><b>Karl-Anthony Towns’ usual size advantage</b></h2><p>As Towns has adjusted to playing the four next to Rudy Gobert, one consistent positive has been his offensive matchup. Typically defended by smaller players now, Towns is a mismatch nightmare. Minnesota is often able to post up KAT and draw double teams, thereby creating easy advantage opportunities for his teammates to capitalize on. If the double doesn’t come, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/timberwolves-news-karl-anthony-towns-insane-first-half-never-seen-before">Towns can usually leverage his size</a> and skills into an easy post-up basket.</p><p>If defended by a true center, Towns’ perimeter skillset separates him from the competition. His elite 3-point shooting and ability to drive the basketball makes him a tough cover in space when Gobert is off the floor. These advantages have helped carry Minnesota’s pedestrian offense — ranked 19th in offensive rating. However, the Magic are one of the few teams that can match the Timberwolves’ frontcourt size to a certain degree.</p><h2><b>Jonathan Isaac’s impact one-on-one</b></h2><p>Known as a lockdown defender, Isaac’s rare combination of size, length, athleticism and defensive footwork place him in the elite tier of NBA defenders when healthy. All of this was on full display Friday night in Orlando’s comeback win. Despite not starting the game, Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley relied upon Isaac to close the game as the Magic pivoted to a bigger lineup to best match up with the Timberwolves.</p><p>Jonathan Isaac drew the Karl-Anthony Towns assignment and did very well in the showdown. Towns shot just 1-of-3 from the field with Isaac defending him. The team has slipped up just a bit as of late due to a string of injuries, most notably to talented forward Franz Wagner; however, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-player-should-lose-minutes" rel="noopener">Magic currently sit</a> comfortably in playoff position, and the revamped defense that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/magic-news-jamahl-mosley-reveals-orlando-motivation-to-be-top-10-defense" rel="noopener">Mosley has orchestrated</a> is a big part of the reason why.</p><p>One of the stalwarts of that impressive defense is backup big man Jonathan Isaac, who made a big impact in the limited playing time he received in a recent loss to the Atlanta Hawks.</p><p>After the game, Mosley heaped praise on Isaac’s ability to<a href="https://twitter.com/FawzanAmer_/status/1747978668784472103" rel="noopener"> impact the game</a> on that end of the floor.</p><p>“He does an excellent job,” said Mosley, per Fawzan Amer of <i>The Sixth Man Show</i> on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “I think he does a great job of protecting at the rim, changing up with who he’s guarding.
