For him to go from expendable piece to someone who’s fully bought into the Warriors system is simply phenomenal. On Monday night, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-jonathan-kuminga-play-buzzing-lakers">Kuminga had another incredible outing</a>, this time dropping a team-high 25 points and 10 rebounds to power the Dubs to a 131-118 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.</p><p>Kuminga is displaying playmaking, hustle, and effort on both ends of the floor that haven’t been seen from him in the past. There was a reason as to why head coach Steve Kerr kept him at such a short leash, as he tended to clash with the Dubs’ system that was predicated on ball and player movement. But Kuminga is playing his best basketball yet, and he’s become a huge reason as to why Golden State has started the season 3-1.</p><p>In his postgame presser, Kuminga reiterated <a href="https://twitter.com/957thegame/status/1983047723470467125" rel="noopener">just how committed</a> he is to the team, and he’s showing it by giving it his all on the glass and on the defensive end.</p><p>“The commitment of just doing it. Just doing it no matter what. Even if you’re not making shots, I’m not making any shots, if I see the ball I just get the ball and just going out there and chasing those rebounds whatever you do. Some of those help win games. It’s something that I’m trying hard to do throughout the year, just throughout my career. From misalignment over his playing time and role next to their veteran stars to a tenuous and public contract negotiation process, things have not clicked between the two parties despite <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/jonathan-kuminga-rewrite-warriors-championship-script-lakers">occasional flashes of Kuminga’s very high ceiling</a>.</p><p>But it’s evident after a good training camp and an even better season debut in the Warriors’ 119-109 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, a switch has flipped for the 23-year-old wing. With 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists on four-of-six from beyond the arc, Kuminga looked fluid doing all the little things Steve Kerr’s asked from him since he joined the Warriors. He battled on the boards, made the right passes, and was strong on the ball as the primary point of attack defender.</p><p>For Kerr, the difference we’re seeing is in how Kuminga has matured, <a href="https://x.com/957thegame/status/1981159883010646021" rel="noopener">as he told</a> Willard and Dibs on 95.7 The Game.</p><p>“[Jonathan Kuminga] has really matured,” Kerr said.</p><p>“The veteran players have really helped him in training camp. Butler held a players-only training camp at his San Diego mansion before the season began as a way to bring his teammates closer. The veteran star has also made a habit of working with the young guys on the Warriors after practice, which has worked dividends for everyone, including Kuminga.</p><p>After Kuminga’s big night in Los Angeles, Butler talked <a href="https://x.com/957thegame/status/1980873743644954843" rel="noopener">about his relationship</a> with Kuminga.</p><p>“I just want to help JK be great,” Butler said.</p><p>“He’s got so much raw talent. He’s so aggressive, he’s athletic, he’s super smart. And I’m trying to teach him a little bit of what I see throughout the game. So we’ve been kicking it, hanging out, watching film, working on our game together; after practice, before practice, during practice. I know how great he wants to be and how great he can be, so it’s now my job to help him fulfill that.”</p><p>The Warriors traded for Butler to pair Stephen Curry with a co-star, hoping he could alleviate their franchise cornerstone’s burden. But they’ve gotten more than they could bargain for. They’ve brought in a guy who’s changed the Dubs culture for the better. That joy Butler’s talked about regaining since joining the Warriors <a href="https://x.com/957thegame/status/1980888024369230067" rel="noopener">has been contagious</a>.</p><p>“Just being a sponge,” Kuminga said when asked how Butler’s helped him. “Going to him every single day. Not just after practice but anytime I interact with him. I’m just trying to pick his brain. And I feel like in this league he’s one of the people who’s actually been in my shoes throughout their career. Like [who] knows what I’ve been going through. What I’ve been through.</p><h2>Kuminga’s path to this point</h2><p>It’s been a windy and somewhat dramatic road to this point in Kuminga’s career, where he’s now in a position to make a significant leap. For Kerr, he understands why Kuminga’s road was so tricky given the <a href="https://x.com/957thegame/status/1981169414772072781" rel="noopener">circumstances of the situation</a>.</p><p>“I mean, it’s not exactly news that he was frustrated last year and that he wanted a bigger role and that the fit was tricky. And I think, you know, when we look back at it, it actually makes perfect sense,” Kerr said on 95.7 The Game.</p><p>“He was 19, he had played eight or nine games in the Covid-G League bubble in Orlando. There was a lot going on, and he joined, unlike all the other guys in his draft class, at the top of the draft.  He joined a team that was trying to win a championship.”</p><p>“So a lot of growing pains and a difficult fit. According to Anthony Slater of ESPN, <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46681601/jimmy-butler-jonathan-kuminga-carry-warriors-opening-win" rel="noopener">one specific rebound</a> left the Warriors “buzzing” after the game.</p><p>“His nine rebounds included an offensive rebound in the final sequence that had the locker room buzzing postgame,” Slater wrote in a recent article.</p><p>Slater also included a quote from Draymond Green that displayed how Golden State felt about Kuminga’s late-game rebound.</p><p>“That rebound is what everyone in the world has been waiting to see. You have that athleticism, you go make big plays,” Green said. “You have superstar potential, you go make big plays. Those are game-winning plays.”</p><p>The Warriors’ impressive win on the road was a statement of sorts. There has been plenty of hype around Luka Doncic and the Lakers, but Stephen Curry and Golden State issued a reminder with the big win.</p><p>If Kuminga can continue to play at a high level, the Warriors will be in an especially favorable position. Curry and Jimmy Butler will lead the team, while Kuminga features the potential to be a difference-maker.</p><p>Golden State will look to remain in the win column on Thursday night against the Denver Nuggets. But there were questions about how to get them to the postseason intact and healthy. There remain questions about how the players around them can maximize their skillsets and vice versa.</p><p>And while it was only one game, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-fans-react-to-jonathan-kumingas-stellar-performance-vs-lakers">Jonathan Kuminga looked like he could rise</a> to become the answer to those problems after his performance in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/golden-state-warriors/warriors-news-stephen-curry-sets-new-nba-record-as-lebron-james-watched-helplessly">Golden State’s 119-109 season opener</a> win over the Los Angeles Lakers on the road. The 23-year-old wing finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists on 6-of-11 FGs and four made 3-pointers.</p><p>He looked comfortable running the floor, finding other players, and battling on the boards, all while guarding Luka Doncic as the primary defender. Kuminga came up clutch with a key offensive rebound that set up Curry with a dagger 35-foot 3-pointer, which Green described as one of <a href="https://x.com/anthonyVslater/status/1980869481883914262" rel="noopener">the plays of the game</a>.</p><p>“That rebound is what everyone in the world has been waiting to see,” Green said. “You got that athleticism, you go make big plays like that. You got superstar potential, you go make big plays. Those are game-winning plays… And so, we can all ask for opportunity– when you ask for opportunity, you must deliver. I think he’s been very vocal about his opportunity, and he delivered.”</p><h2>Why things are clicking for Jonathan Kuminga right now</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Did-Jonathan-Kuminga-just-rewrite-Warriors-2-1.jpg"><figcaption>David Gonzales-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>It’s no secret that Kuminga and Golden State’s time together has been tenuous. With his size, youth, athleticism, and raw talent, Kuminga has been this tantalizing variable who’s shown flashes of high upside. But he and the Warriors have struggled to maximize that talent due to a misalignment between what he wants to be and what Steve Kerr and the coaching staff want him to be.</p><p>Kuminga has sought more opportunities and more responsibilities befitting of a star, while Kerr has emphasized he needs to do the ancillary things that contribute to winning, like rebounding and defending at a high level. It’s why his contract negotiations were so heated before he eventually signed a two-year extension with a team option in a “prove-it” kind of deal. It’s why things have been contentious at times, like when Kuminga demanded a trade midway through the 2023-2024 season.</p><p>However, all of that drama, so to speak, seems to have dissipated since Kuminga signed his extension. He looked sharp and bought into the Warriors’ game plan all the preseason. And it translated in his play versus Los Angeles. After the game, Kerr talked about what’s got Kuminga into <a href="https://x.com/anthonyVslater/status/1980867369485713792" rel="noopener">a solid rhythm early</a>.</p><p>“I think he’s really really matured,” Kerr said. “He’s had a great camp. We’ve had some really good conversations. I think he has a better understanding of what we need. You saw in the first half, he took a couple of tough mid-range fadeaways that we don’t want. He immediately held up his hand; he realized that was not the shot.”</p><p>Kerr shared how the adjustment at halftime was to get Kuminga more involved with Curry, which helped him find his rhythm. He also cited Butler’s guidance throughout training camp, helping Kuminga a lot after practice. But ultimately, Kerr contextualized Kuminga’s youth in relation to what’s been asked of him.</p><p>“With Jonathan, you got to remember he just turned 23… he came to us basically as a freshman in college. That’s how I looked at it and a lot of players today just don’t get the same experience and reps they got years ago. And for him, it hasn’t been easy to find minutes on our team. I’m really proud of him for staying with it and really maturing. It’s a great start for him and us.”</p><h2>How Kuminga changes Golden State’s ceiling</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Did-Jonathan-Kuminga-just-rewrite-Warriors-3-1.jpg"><figcaption>William Liang-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>While it’s so early into the season, Kuminga’s performance showed a lot of potential for what Golden State can be moving forward. As Kerr pointed out, Kuminga’s play next to Curry will be key moving forward. With him as a screener, or even No. 30 as a screener, Curry’s gravity should get him easy opportunities. He looked calm and collected, making the right play as the outlet when two players jumped at Curry.</p><p>Kuminga’s jumper also looked new and improved as he buried some threes that he missed last season. Spacing is ever important in the Kerr offense, and when Kuminga’s shot’s on target, it changes the kind of lineups Golden State can roll out.</p><p>And defensively, it’s always nice to have a player who can defend on-ball 94 feet. With Moses Moody out, he was tasked with chasing Doncic the majority of the game. While Kuminga did not shut down the Lakers’ star, he made Doncic work.</p><p>“He’s guarding Luka all night,” Green said. “We didn’t have to commit two guys. So [Doncic] get’s 43, which I always tell these guys, you’re not stopping a great scorer. That’s not the way the league is set up for you to stop a great scorer. But you do make it tough on them. And I think all night he made it tough on him, body on body all day.”</p><p>It’s Kuminga’s two-way potential that makes him so exciting. It’s a guy who does the dirty work so veterans don’t have to, and prevent the wear and tear.</p><p>“JK was all over [Doncic] but then he stayed so patient offensively,” Green continued.</p><p>“It wasn’t going well offensively early, and he just stayed patient. And he stayed patient, and the game just flipped in his direction. And so, it was about the rebound, but the overall of what we’ve seen since he showed up to camp, the force he’s playing with, the force he’s running with, the passes he’s making, the drop off to Al [Horford] was crazy.
