Alcaraz had a strong run at the tournament and eventually lost in the final to World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.</p><p>“Where you wanna go?” Paul had asked him while he was attending the match on Centre Court. The response was simple.</p><p>“I said, ‘I wanna come to New York,’” Clarkson <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/09/07/sports/jordan-clarkson-joining-knicks-started-with-phone-call-at-wimbledon/" rel="noopener">revealed during his appearance</a> on The Roommates podcast which is hosted by Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, per the New York Post. This was followed by the Klutch Sports CEO relaying his interest to the franchise.</p><p>Clarkson had previously agreed to a buyout with the Jazz, with the franchise looking to build their future around younger players. He signed with the Knicks as an unrestricted free agent, partly because of the arena and the fans.</p><p>“The arena [MSG], honestly. Feeling the energy from the fans. Knowing they’re going to let you have it if you’re playing like s**t. But when you’re playing great, it’s all love. At the end of the day, I just want to feel the energy. Get to play with y’all [Brunson and Hart],” he said.</p><p>The 2021 Sixth Man of the Year averaged 16.2 points, 3.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds across 37 games last season for the Jazz. After <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/how-2024-25-knicks-improved-on-last-seasons-success">the Knicks rounded out their starting unit last offseason</a>, the Knicks recently reached an <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-jordan-clarkson-sign-contract-new-york-jazz-buyout">agreement with former Sixth Man of the Year winner Jordan Clarkson</a>.</p><p>The 6-foot-3 guard will join the team for <a href="https://x.com/SbondyNBA/status/1939860221309882854" rel="noopener">the veteran’s minimum</a>, according to the New York Post’s Stefan Bondy. And he will be a welcomed addition to the team’s bench, which was in dire need of scoring and playmaking help this past season.</p><h2><b>Knicks add important spark to its second unit</b></h2><p>The Knicks’ bench was an area of need for the team entering this offseason. After solidifying its starting unit last Summer with the addition of Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, New York’s bench was relatively depleted partially due to the two-for-one trade they swung for Towns.</p><p>The Knicks’ bench was  near the bottom of the league in terms of minutes per game through the regular season, which was also the case for the 2025 NBA Playoffs. And they received limited scoring support as well. The Knicks’ bench scored the second-fewest points per game through the playoffs.</p><p>But Clarkson should help with bench depth and scoring. He is a dynamic scorer who can create for others when properly motivated. Clarkson averaged 16.2 points in 26 minutes per game last season for the Utah Jazz. And he connected on 36.2% of his 3-point attempts, which he averaged 6.3 attempts per game.</p><h2><b>Clarkson addition should unlock additional lineup possibilities</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Jordan-Clarkson-Jazz-Knicks.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports</figcaption></figure><p>Clarkson’s bench scoring was badly needed. But his presence also enables additional lineups. Assuming everyone enters the 2025-26 season healthy, the Knicks can start Jalen Brunson, Bridges, OG Anunoby, Towns, and Josh Hart, Miles McBride, or Mitchell Robinson.</p><p>Two of Hart, McBride, and Robinson will anchor its bench along with Clarkson, which makes for an impressive eight-man rotation.</p><p>Clarkson can capably play point guard or shooting guard. He may not be an All-NBA defender, but Clarkson is a better and more willing passer than most people think. Over the past two seasons, Clarkson posted an assist percentage of 22.9% in 2024-25, which better than McBride, Hart, and Bridges.</p><h2><b>Why is Clarkson signing meaningful? </b></h2><p>The Clarkson signing was the team’s first meaningful move of the 2025 offseason. He will immediately improve the team’s depth and playmaking. And the fact the he selected the Knicks is an important and underappreciated aspect to the addition.</p><p>Clarkson agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Jazz that would have paid him $14.3 million. That is telling. Clarkson clearly wants to compete for a championship.</p><p>He has played in only 43 playoff games across his 11-year NBA career. And after reaching the NBA Finals (and losing) with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2017-18, he has not gotten past the second round. The Knicks give him a great chance of doing exactly that.</p><p>Clarkson is hopefully the first of a few offseason moves for the Knicks. New York doesn’t have many remaining needs to fill in free agency, unless Giannis Antetokounmpo decides to request a trade—<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-rumors-giannis-antetokounmpo-not-pleased-damian-lillard-exit">which may be closer than we think</a>.</p><p>Assuming the Knicks can lock down one or two additional impact guys, they will be incredibly prepared for an even deeper run next season. And the injuries to and moves made by the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers indicate an even easier path to the NBA Finals for the Knicks in 2026. The Knicks were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-new-york-linked-jordan-clarkson-jazz-buyout">first linked to Clarkson</a> on Monday after news of his buyout broke.</p><p>Clarkson was the first Jazz player to win Sixth Man of the Year when it was awarded to him for the 2020-21 season. He averaged 18.4 points per game that season, a career-best at the time. Clarkson’s average scoring output of 20.8 points per game in 2023 beat that mark.</p><p>The 33-year-old Clarkson only played 37 games last year due to a foot injury. He underwent a procedure to address the plantar fasciitis in his left foot in late March that ended his season.</p><p>Before that injury ended his season, Clarkson was giving the Jazz solid production in his 26 minutes per game. The veteran scorer averaged 16.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 0.8 steals per game.</p><p>Clarkson also threw in 2.3 3-pointers a night, making 36.2 percent of his 6.3 average 3-point attempts. His 16.2 points per game was the fifth-highest average scoring contribution of his career.</p><p>Clarkson played a large role for the Jazz on offense last season. He recorded a 27.0 usage rate that was in the 92nd percentile among all NBA players in the 2024-25 campaign. When on the court, he assisted 23.8 percent of his teammates’ makes – more than 85 percent of NBA players last season.</p><p>The Jazz may have exposed themselves to diminishing returns in regard to Clarkson’s workload when he was healthy. Their <a href="https://cleaningtheglass.com/stats/player/653/onoff#tab-team_efficiency" rel="noopener">efficiency differential decreased</a> by 1.1 points when he was on the court. Their offense scored 1.9 fewer points per 100 possessions when he played, per Cleaning the Glass.</p><h2><b>Clarkson provides veteran scoring punch for Knicks’ bench</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Jordan-Clarkson-Jazz-Knicks.jpg"><figcaption>Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Clarkson did show last season that he had refined parts of his offensive game. His 21.5 free-throw rate, 87th percentile, ties for his fourth-highest. The Jazz made 2.8 more free throws per 100 field goal attempts when he was playing. That differential in free-throw rate was in the 85th percentile in the league last season, per Cleaning the Glass.</p><p>Clarkson is a 33.6 percent 3-point shooter for his career. In the 2023-24 season, he made just 29.4 percent of his 5.6 attempts from downtown per game. His 36.2 3-point shooting percentage this past season was the fifth-best of his career thus far. His 6.3 attempts per game were the result of his fourth-highest career 3-point shooting volume.</p><p>Once <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/why-knicks-tom-thibodeau-must-consider-expanding-lineup-before-playoffs">the Knicks expanded their rotation last season</a>, veterans like Delon Wright and Landry Shamet made key contributions to the team’s playoff run. The team entered this offseason knowing it needed to replace the production it got from those players.</p><p>Clarkson, bought out by the Jazz on Monday, was <a href="https://x.com/StevePopper/status/1939809546672730499" rel="noopener">an ‘unexpected find’</a> for New York at a ‘low cost,’ per Steve Popper. His deal with the Knicks is expected to be for <a href="https://x.com/SbondyNBA/status/1939860221309882854" rel="noopener">the veteran’s minimum</a>, according to Stefan Bondy.</p><p>Clarkson doesn’t have a positive defensive reputation. As a result, he doesn’t slot in cleanly next to All-NBA guard Jalen Brunson. He’ll be a reserve for New York. But he’ll be a valuable piece when they want to turn to their bench for scoring.</p><p>The Knicks are still searching for their next head coach. New York will continue to fill out its roster as free agency progresses. For now, they can say they’ve added a seven-year NBA scorer for as low of a cost as possible. Clarkson has <a href="https://x.com/statmuse/status/1939864194196922792" rel="noopener">the most points</a> off of the bench in the NBA since 2020.</p><p>Whether or not guard Deuce McBride starts for the team next season, Clarkson can help provide scoring off of the bench.
