Now, the Pelicans are once again having to deal with the injury bug, as Jose Alvarado and Larry Nance Jr. will not be available for the start of training camp.</p><p>On Thursday afternoon, the <a href="https://www.nba.com/pelicans/news/pelicans-medical-updates-jose-alvarado-larry-nance-jr-092823" rel="noopener">team released injury updates</a> for both Alvarado and Nance, stating that both players are expected to return to basketball activities in two-to-three weeks.</p><p>Per the Pelicans, “Jose Alvarado sustained a right ankle sprain during an offseason workout and is expected to return to basketball activities in approximately 2-3 weeks. Larry Nance Jr. received a biologic injection to stimulate the healing process in his left ankle. He is expected to make a full recovery before the start of the regular season and is anticipated to return to basketball activities in approximately 2-3 weeks.”</p><p>Alvarado’s injury occurred a couple of weeks ago, as Shams Charania from The Athletic reported on Sept. 17 that the 25-year-old guard had <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1703541163771224130?s=20" rel="noopener">suffered an ankle sprain</a> during a workout, leaving his status for training camp in question.</p><p>The Pelicans guard was forced to miss the team’s final 20 games during the 2022-23 season due to a stress fracture in his right tibia. He did not participate in their play-in tournament game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.</p><p>As for Nance, he too did not play in the play-in tournament game against Oklahoma City. This past year, Nance played in a total of 65 games, missing some time here and there due to ankle soreness. The injection he received ahead of training camp will supposedly help any soreness and pain that still exists from prior injuries.</p><p>The Pelicans finished the 2022-23 season with a 42-40 record, failing to make the playoffs for the fourth time in the last five years. Injuries derailed their chances to make it back to the postseason, as All-Stars Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson also missed large parts of the season for different ailments. One of those is Jose Alvarado. The New Orleans <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-new-orleans-jose-alvarado-injury-update-ahead-of-2023-24-nba-season" rel="noopener">Pelicans guard suffered</a> an ankle injury during a workout within weeks of the NBA season start. This is concerning given that his biggest strengths are his lateral coverage on defense and quickness. Although, the young player knows that as much as this is a physical discomfort most of the battle happens mentally.</p><p>Jose Alvarado outlined his mentality during the injury recovery process <a href="https://twitter.com/AlvaradoJose15/status/1703579417732079702" rel="noopener">in a Twitter post</a>, “You tougher than you think.”</p><p>The Pelicans guard was a key asset in the team’s campaign last year. He was their defensive specialist and went viral for his quick steals that took advantage of a player that is not facing him. But, his presence has been steady and reliable for the Pelicans. Alvarado played for 61 games last year which means a lot of rotation minutes will be up for grabs if he gets ruled.</p><p>His loss adds to a slew of injury problems on the roster. Zion Williamson has been nursing a hamstring injury but is on his way back. Prior to Alvarado’s injury, the Pelicans also saw their other guard, Trey Murphy, go down. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/trey-murphy-iii-pelicans-absence-impacts-zion-williamson-brandon-ingram" rel="noopener">Murphy is set to miss</a> the start of NBA Training Camps and the early parts of the season. The Pelicans did not make any major roster moves this offseason suggesting that they are comfortable running it back provided that they have a clean slate of health. The offseason hasn’t been so kind to them, however. Just a few weeks ago, they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/trey-murphy-iii-pelicans-absence-impacts-zion-williamson-brandon-ingram" rel="noopener">received bad news</a> on forward Trey Murphy who will miss the start of the season. Alvarado is entering his third season in the NBA after going undrafted in the 2021 NBA Draft.</p><p>This past season, Alvarado suited up in 61 games for the Pelicans, including ten starts in 21.5 minutes per game. Alvarado averaged 9.0 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals with splits of 41.1 percent shooting from the field, 33.6 percent shooting from the three-point line and 81.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>Alvarado was originally signed to a two-way contract by the Pelicans as a rookie but ultimately had his contract converted to a standard one.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Instead, the happiest he’s been is when he saw his beloved teammates reap the financial rewards Jose Alvarado and Herb Jones reap the financial rewards of their hard work.</p><p>“Someone asked me the other day what my best moment has been in the NBA so far. I told them seeing Jose (Alvarado) and Herb get paid. I get to see them work every day. I know their personalities and I know how much they love basketball,” Ingram said.</p><p>In a league where the salaries of every player is common knowledge, there’s certainly a risk for players to grow envious of one another. But it’s refreshing to see Pelicans star Brandon Ingram be secure in his own worth and wish nothing but prosperity for his Pelicans teammates who have had to overcome a ton of adversity on their way to financial security.</p><p>” I know how much they put into this. And those guys played four years in college, so they had to earn this. They had to wait their turn,” Ingram added.</p><p>Both Herb Jones and Jose Alvarado weren’t highly sought-after prospects when they entered the NBA. Jones was a second-round draft pick who quickly impressed the Pelicans brass with his defensive chops — earning himself a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-2023-nba-free-agency-grades-for-every-signing" rel="noopener">four-year, $54 million deal</a> during the 2023 offseason that should end up being a bargain for the team in the long haul.</p><p>Meanwhile, Alvarado even went undrafted, with the Pelicans taking a chance on the 6’0 guard out of Georgia Tech off the undrafted market. Alvarado then endeared himself to both the team and its fanbase with his defensive peskiness and timely shot-making. He’s now one of the team’s most beloved players. Despite that, there is still a lot of uncertainty regarding Zion Williamson’s possible return as nothing is definite. If that wasn’t enough, the Pelicans received some ominous news regarding fan favorite and backup point guard Jose Alvarado’s injury. Alvarado is set to be re-examined in two to three weeks and he could also <a href="https://twitter.com/MarcJSpears/status/1638604881517748245?s=20" rel="noopener">miss</a> the remainder of the regular season as per Marc J. He has missed the last 10 games due to a stress reaction in his right tibia, showed incremental improvement. The last time Alvarado was on the court was on Feb. 27 against the Orlando Magic. Alvarado has developed into a fan-favorite for the Pelicans with his energy and tenacity on the court. Before his injury, Alvarado was averaging 9.0 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals with shooting splits of 41.4 percent shooting from the field, 33.6 percent shooting from the three-point line and 81.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.</p><p>With the Pelicans injury woes mounting including Williamson and Alvarado, their postseason chances in the Western Conference are slowly slipping away. They have managed win two games in a row and they currently sit at 35-37 and in 12th place in the Western Conference standings. They are essentially tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for 11th and they are half a game back of the Utah Jazz for the 10th spot in the West. But up in Queens, where Alvarado spent his pre-college years, Alvarado has earned a big reputation.</p><p>With the Pelicans in town to take on the New York Knicks, Alvarado’s high school alma mater — Christ the King High School, located in Queens — decided to <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/02/25/jose-alvarado-gets-jersey-retired-by-alma-mater-christ-the-king/" rel="noopener">hold a jersey retirement ceremony</a> for the second-year pro, per the New York Post’s Andrew Crane.</p><p>Alvarado, now wearing no. 15 for the Pelicans, wore no. 10 for the Christ the King Royals.</p><p>Following Christ the King’s victory over St. Francis Prep, head coach Joe Arbitello — who also coached Alvarado — presented the lockdown defender with his framed high school jersey. Alvarado, bringing along his Rising Stars MVP trophy, had his Pelicans teammates among those in attendance.</p><p>As a standout at Christ the King, Alvarado repeatedly demonstrated the impressive defensive abilities that allowed him to lock down a rotation spot with the Pelicans. He also owns the first quadruple-double in school history, a difficult feat to perform at any level.</p><p>Listed at 5-foot-11 when he left the program, Alvarado opted to accept an offer to play for Georgia Tech instead of Rutgers and Seton Hall.</p><p>At the time, ESPN draft analysts <a href="https://insider.espn.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/evaluation/_/id/216121/jose-alvarado" rel="noopener">had this to say</a> about him:</p><p>“He’s more than the sum of his individual parts, at least from a physical perspective, because his best asset is his will to do absolutely anything necessary to win. Dame hit his famed celly after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-all-star-news-stephen-curry-reacts-to-damian-lillard-winning-3pt-shootout" rel="noopener">bagging the NBA 3-Point Contest trophy</a> for the first time in his career on Saturday night. The following day, Lillard busted it out again after <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/bucks-news-giannis-antetokounmpo-predicted-damian-lillards-game-winner" rel="noopener">hitting the game-winner</a> for Team Giannis in the NBA All-Star Game.</p><p>As it turns out, the Dame Time celebration should have made an appearance even before Lillard graced the All-Star festivities. New Orleans Pelicans guard Jose Alvarado admitted that he wanted to hit the celly after draining a game-winning triple in the NBA Rising Stars Game. Alvarado asked Dame straight up if he had permission to do so, and the Blazers star responded in an affirmative manner:</p><p>“I would’ve respected it. <a href="https://twitter.com/ClutchPointsApp/status/1628515191976775680?s=20" rel="noopener">You should’ve did it</a>,” Lillard said. “I just don’t like when people do it when they playing against me, and they be trying to show me up. Not only did he lead his squad to the Rising Stars title, but he also ended up crashing at least a couple of interviews throughout the festivities. Alvarado’s rise continued over NBA All-Star weekend when he took home the MVP honors of the NBA All-Star Rising Stars game after a jaw-dropping three-point shot to win the game. He’s the team’s backup point guard and resident opposing player irritant. Alvarado has upped his numbers from his rookie season to 9.1 points per game, 2.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.1 steals with shooting splits of 40.9 percent shooting from the field, 33.9 percent shooting from three-point range and 81.3 percent shooting from the free throw line. While his overall shooting percentage may be down from the 44.6 percent he shot as a rookie, his three point shooting percentage has seen a jump from the 29.1 percent he shot last season.</p><p>During last season’s playoff run, Alvarado averaged 8.o points per game, 1.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.2 steals with shooting splits of 48.5 percent from the field, 37.5 percent from the three-point line and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

With Team Pau leading 22-20 and just three points away to reach the target score, the Pelicans rising star took matters into his own hands to finish it off. He excelled in his role during the regular season and built off a postseason in which he scored 8.0 points per game on 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 37.5 percent shooting from 3-point range.</p><p>That offseason, Alvarado received an invite to play for the Puerto Rican national team during the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers and scored <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/pelicans/basketball/jose-alvarados-impressive-debut-with-puerto-rico" rel="noopener">20 points in his debut</a>.</p><p>Now, Alvarado averaged 22.0 minutes per game with the Pelicans and has started in eight contests. But so far this season, the Pels have been on par with their former tormentors and have since surpassed them after going 2-0 in their quick 2-game series.</p><p>The Pelicans hold the West’s top spot now despite the fact they haven’t had Brandon Ingram healthy for a good chunk of the season. That’s got to sting a little bit for Chris Paul, whose Suns were just shown up by the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks earlier in the week.</p><p>With the way the West is unfolding, there’s a decent chance that the Pelicans take on the Suns once more come postseason time in what will likely be a battle of equals rather than a David vs. Goliath bout. Last year, New Orleans and Phoenix faced off against each other in a tightly contested playoff series during the first round of the postseason. The Suns won the series in six games, but Alvarado guarded Paul for much of the series and greatly frustrated the future Hall of Famer. Paul was even limited to a mere four points in Game 4, a game that the Pelicans won by 15 points at home. </p><p>The Suns and Pelicans finally had a chance to play one another again on Friday. This time it was the Pelicans that came out on top, as they won 128-117. Alvarado had a rib contusion but played anyway. When asked after the game about what gave him the motivation to play through the pain, Alvarado gave the <a href="https://twitter.com/_Andrew_Lopez/status/1601437287052890113" rel="noopener">following response</a>:</p><p>“If that person (Chris Paul) was playing, I’m playing.” </p><p>Jose Alvarado, 24, is in his second year in the NBA and with the Pelicans. He’s averaging 10.0 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.3 steals, and 0.2 blocks per game across 25 appearances this season. Alvarado, foremost a defensive-minded player, has made considerable strides in his ability to shoot the ball behind the three-point arc, as he’s converting 40.2% of his long-range looks, by far a career-high. </p><p>Clearly, Alvarado embraces the challenge of guarding some of the best players in the NBA, Paul included. The 22-year-old dropped 35 points on 13-of-17 shooting against Phoenix as he helped the Pels to a 128-117 win over Chris Paul and Co.</p><p>Williamson left quite an impression after that dazzling display. So much so, that Pelicans teammate Jose Alvarado had to come out with a <a href="https://twitter.com/PelicansNBA/status/1601438222575247361?s=20&amp;t=zxktBYfI-XxOji0XODQeSA">bold warning</a> for the rest of the NBA during his post-game press conference:</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">"Zion Williamson. He even searched out the camera to look it in the eye before dropping his bold prediction on Zion. This dude feels like he came straight out of the WWE. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-jose-alvarados-6-word-message-after-torching-nuggets-for-38">The way he plays</a> gives you those vibes as well.</p><p>Be that as it may, it’s hard to argue that Alvarado has a valid point here — especially after seeing Zion’s performance on Friday night. Apart from the 35 points, Williamson, who was involved in a bit of a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-zion-williamsons-showboating-vs-suns-leads-to-intense-bench-clearing-scenes-in-new-orleans">fracas</a> at the end of the game, also logged seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal in 37 minutes of action.</p><p>Entering the Suns matchup, Zion averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/willizi01/gamelog/2023">28.0 points</a> on 65.0 percent shooting, 9.8 rebounds, 6.0 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.6 blocks in his last five games — all of which were wins for the Pels. Those are some lofty numbers that are definitely worthy of MVP contention. If Zion Williamson is able to keep this up, then there should be little doubt that he’s going to be in the MVP conversation at the end of the season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He was undrafted in 2021 after spending four years at Georgia Tech and he declined his extra year of eligibility due to Covid-19 and made himself available for the NBA draft.</p><p>Alvarado signed on to the Pelicans summer league squad that off-season and he didn’t even start for the team. The Pelicans were intrigued enough, however, to sign him to a two-way contract and allow him the opportunity to develop with the Birmingham Squadron, their G League affiliate. Alvarado ended up proving himself valuable enough to the team though and the Pelicans converted his deal to a standard contract in order for him to be eligible for the postseason.</p><p>He’s been one of the Pelicans most consistent players off the bench and he’s settled into his role as the team’s backup point guard. He’s endeared himself to fans while <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-news-chris-paul-the-latest-victim-of-grand-theft-jose-alvarado">frustrating opponents</a> with what’s become his signature defensive play.</p><p>Coming into the game the Nuggets held the second seed in the West, but the Pelicans have now jumped ahead of them in the standings.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

McCollum who led the way. The Pelicans were powered by Jose Alvarado who dropped a career-high 38 points on a career-best eight made three-point shots. Last season as a rookie, he suited up in 54 games for the Pelicans. Alvarado was initially signed to a two-way contract but played well enough to have that converted to a standard contract.
