After being selected <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-1-player-in-danger-of-losing-starting-job-in-2023-24-nba-training-camp" rel="noopener">by the Mavs</a> back in 2020, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-mavs-josh-green-contract-extension-plans-intriguing-update" rel="noopener">Green has established</a> himself as a key member of the Dallas rotation, but that hasn’t stopped him from looking for ways to get better for the upcoming season.</p><p>Recently, Green sat down with Grant Afseth of <i>Sports Illustrated</i> to discuss his <a href="https://www.si.com/nba/mavericks/news/dallas-mavs-exclusive-josh-green-seeks-bigger-defensive-presence-year-4" rel="noopener">goals moving forward</a>.</p><p>“I want to be able to be a bigger defensive presence next year for the Mavs,” said Green. “I think this is a perfect time to try. I think I’ll be in pretty good shape from picking out full court every game.”</p><p>The Mavs could certainly use all of the defensive help they can get. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving bring a lot of firepower on offense. However, they certainly can’t be considered two-way players, and the result was a layup line for Dallas’ opponents throughout 2023. The 2022-23 season was a disappointment for Dallas following their surprising run to the Western Conference Finals in 2021-22.</p><p>Kyrie Irving’s arrival was meant to supplement Doncic’s wizardry and elevate the Mavs into championship contender status; however, the exact opposite happened, with Dallas going into a tailspin shortly after Irving’s arrival and freefalling down the standings, ultimately ending up with a spot in the NBA lottery instead of the playoffs.</p><p>If Josh Green is indeed able to improve defensively while still keeping the opposition honest on offense, it would certainly do a lot to help Dallas’ fortunes moving forward.</p><p>The Mavs’ season is slated to begin on October 25 against the San Antonio Spurs.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Green attacked the rim, but Doncic met him <a href="https://twitter.com/dmn_mavericks/status/1697611618094293292?s=20" rel="noopener">up high and rejected him</a>, reports The Dallas Morning News’ SportsDay Staff.</p><p>Doncic finished with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists in Slovenia’s 91-80 win over Australia in the FIBA World Cup on Friday. Additionally, he will now have plenty of leverage on Green once the NBA regular season comes around. The two Mavs teammates will most likely look back and laugh on the block, but Green might avoid him come the start of training camp.</p><p>The Mavericks are staring down the barrel of a season with massive expectations, or else. Everyone around the Mavs can count on Luka Doncic being successful, but if guys like Josh Green and the rest of the roster don’t show up, it might spell the end of the Doncic era in Dallas.</p><p>For now, both Doncic and Green will focus on the rest of the FIBA World Cup and trying to bring home gold for their respective countries. They have another $39 million in cap holds; $21.5 million of which belongs to Christian Wood.</p><p>However, according to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs and three-year pro Josh Green are set to have contract extension talks <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-im-hearing-on-nba-trade" rel="noopener">sooner rather than later</a>. A move that could signal that Dallas may be expecting Wood’s free agency to be resolved soon, as teams like <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-kings-heat-mentioned-as-potential-christian-wood-suitors-amid-lakers-interest" rel="noopener">the Los Angeles Lakers</a> are reportedly interested in signing the veteran big man.</p><p>It’s also a scenario that backs up their rumored serious disinterest in including Green, the 18th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, in trade talks. Green, just 22 years old, is one their younger and more promising players. A solid shooter, playmaker and defender, making sure that Green remains on the roster for the next few years does nothing but help Dallas in their efforts to win their first championship since 2011 and their second in franchise history.</p><p>Green averaged career-highs of 9.1 points per game, 25.7 minutes per game, and 21 starts (in 60 games played) last season while shooting a blistering 53.7 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from 3 (also career-highs).</p><p>His most impressive stretch came just before the All-Star Break, as the Arizona product averaged 20.8 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 0.8 steals per game on 62.5 percent shooting from the field and 50.0 percent shooting from 3 in <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/g/greenjo02/gamelog/2023#141-144-sum:pgl_basic" rel="noopener">a four-game stretch</a> from Feb. 6-11.</p><p>Playing beside the recently acquired Kyrie Irving in three of those four contests, the Mavericks would take down the Sacramento Kings, a healthy Los Angeles Clippers squad, and a competitive Utah Jazz squad.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The Mavericks fall to 32-30. Austin Reaves made a decent contribution off the bench, recording nine points on six shots, three assists and three rebounds in 27 minutes.</p><p>Josh Green also scored nine points on 3-6 shooting, but he did it in 16 minutes off the bench. He also recorded three rebounds and one assist.</p><p>The win is a huge win for the Lakers, who have come out of the All-Star break winning two straight. They need every win they can get to try to make the play-in tournament. The Lakers are now just one game back of the New Orleans Pelicans for the final play-in spot, with the Golden State Warriors, Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves being 1.5 games ahead. All of a sudden the Lakers have some life.</p><p>The Mavericks could use every win as well, but are not as desperate as the Lakers are. The Mavericks are currently in the sixth spot in the Western Conference, one game ahead of The Timberwolves, Jazz and Warriors. They are also one game behind the Los Angeles Clippers and Phoenix Suns in the Western Conference. The Mavericks could move a lot based on how they perform down the stretch.</p><p>The Lakers will travel to Memphis for another tough test against the Grizzlies on Tuesday, while the Mavericks will host the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday as well</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, Luka Doncic has had enough of the Mavs’ shenanigans and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/mavs-news-insane-luka-doncic-stat-proves-that-hes-closing-in-on-dirk-nowitzkis-goat-status-for-dallas" rel="noopener">put a stop</a> to their bleeding with a 41-point, 12-rebound, and 12-assist performance.</p><p>And perhaps this win could spur the Mavs into a much-needed winning run to jolt them back in the upper echelon of the Western Conference, with head coach Jason Kidd hinting at potential rotation changes.</p><p>In particular, it was Josh Green who got the nod at the end of the game, with Reggie Bullock mired in a dreadful shooting slump. In the dying embers of the game, Green made one crucial shot after another – a corner three and a tough layup over Andrew Wiggins – that’s sure to endear him to his head coach. And endear himself he has.</p><p>“When guys are playing well…you know Josh (Green) is playing well. He’s going to eat into some minutes from maybe Timmy or Reggie or Doe. That’s just how it looks right now,” Kidd <a href="https://twitter.com/DorothyJGentry/status/1597800794341969920" rel="noopener">said after the game</a>, per Dorothy J. Gentry.</p><p>Josh Green finished with 13 points on 5-7 shooting, continuing his run of efficient scoring. Green entered the Mavs’ game against the Warriors with an incredible 73.6 percent true shooting, leaps and bounds better than the efficiency numbers of other Mavs wings.</p><p>Jason Kidd had already made a rotation change, after he inserted Tim Hardaway Jr. into the starting lineup in place of Reggie Bullock. And the switch <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/1-mavs-player-who-must-be-traded-soon" rel="noopener">may have unlocked</a> THJ in the process. Hardaway dropped 22 points on 8-16 shooting (5-11 from three), which should help him retain his starting spot for now, while Bullock struggled again with an 0-3 effort.</p><p>Nonetheless, if Josh Green continues to play like this, Kidd may find it too difficult to keep him off the court, especially with Luka Doncic needing every bit of help he can get.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
