Tom Thibodeau has been forced to several players from his bench as this team treads water. And for the most part, New York has done a good job managing this adversity over the past few weeks. But, with the playoffs set to start on April 19, this group needs to be close to 100% to be competitive with the top teams in the East. And the two franchises New York is staring ahead at are the Celtics and Cavs.</p><p>Aside from an early-season loss to Cleveland, the Knicks have not looked competitive against either of these franchises. However, the postseason is a completely different animal, and no one will care about this group’s record against either of these contenders if they can beat them when it matters most. Of course, New York will have to get out of the first round before it meets either the Cavs or the Celtics.</p><p>Overall, the Knicks are in a rare position where their success hinges on what happens in the postseason. It feels like this group is in Conference Finals or bust mode, which makes sense, considering the bold moves Leon Rose made over the summer. It’s both a privilege and curse for this fanbase, as this organization and team should be applauded for how far they have come over the past few years. That cannot be taken for granted. Brunson is one of the best point guards in the association, and he leaves such a huge playmaking and shot-creation void with his absence. Nonetheless, on Tuesday night, in a 128-113 win over the Dallas Mavericks, Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart decided to fill the stat sheet and make Knicks fans forget about Brunson’s absence, at least for a short while.</p><p>Towns put up a monster stat line of 26 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists, and Hart was not to be outdone, as he kept in step with the Knicks star in the stat-sheet stuffing department by tallying 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 11 assists of his own. And in so doing, Towns and Hart became the first pair of teammates in Knicks history to record a triple-double, <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1904709947130081293" rel="noopener">as noted</a> by the official ClutchPoints account on X (formerly Twitter).</p><p>Towns and Hart both have had excellent seasons, thriving in the Big Apple despite the heavy workload they get on a nightly basis from head coach Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks have gotten Towns back to being at his best at the center position, with the 29-year-old star averaging 24.5 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 3.0 assists on the year, while Hart has taken his glue-guy contributions to the next level, putting up 13.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per contest.</p><p>The entire Knicks team was simply firing on all cylinders on Tuesday; in addition to Towns and Hart’s incredible nights, OG Anunoby also had himself a ballgame, scoring 35 points to lead all scorers. That’s the harsh reality the Knicks must confront after their 115-98 defeat in Charlotte on Thursday night. Knicks forward Josh Hart has a pressing concern about where the team stands.</p><p>“Mental toughness. I think that’s my main concern right now,” Hart said <a href="https://x.com/SbondyNBA/status/1902900157265379477" rel="noopener">in a postgame interview</a>. “We can make all the excuses in the world, but there’s highs and lows in the season, and no one’s 82-0. The Knicks offense sputtered, connecting on just 40 percent of their shots, while Charlotte capitalized with a 48.9 percent shooting performance.</p><p>OG Anunoby poured in 25 points, and Karl-Anthony Towns chipped in with 24 points and 10 rebounds. However, the Knicks’ three-point shooting woes continued as they sank just 10 of 39 attempts. Despite taking care of the ball with only seven turnovers, it wasn’t enough to come away with the victory.</p><p>Mikal Bridges added 16 points, while Josh Hart finished with 13 for Tom Thibodeau’s squad, which has now dropped six of its last nine games. The Knicks’ bench provided little support, scoring just 11 points, while Charlotte’s second unit stepped up with 37 points.</p><p>The loss to the Hornets, one of the East’s weakest teams, highlighted the Knicks’ ongoing struggles without key contributors. While injuries and fatigue have taken a toll, Hart emphasized that they can’t rely on excuses.</p><p>With the playoffs nearing, the Knicks must regain their edge before their struggles put their postseason position at risk. You know my feelings towards Thibs,” Hart said. “You’re not going to find a more loyal player. I love Thibs. I think that was just my frustration coming out with the flow of the game, my own individual performance.”</p><p>“Yeah, I was just, you know, it was just something that just happened in the heat of the moment. I’m a competitor. He’s a competitor. So sometimes those things happen. I don’t think it really — it doesn’t affect our relationship. It doesn’t show anything of what’s going on. It’s just two extremely competitive people in a fiery moment. I love Thibs. I love what he’s doing.
