Richardson was a key part of Miami’s rotation before shoulder injury in February. He is expected to make a full recovery for next season.”</p><p>After suffering a shoulder injury, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-josh-richardson-out-for-season-after-shoulder-injury-that-needs-surgery">Richardson was shut down</a> to have surgery in early March. The initial diagnosis on Richardson was that he was going to miss a few weeks and then the Heat would be re-evaluating him soon thereafter. Clearly, the re-evaluation did not turn out well, as he missed the rest of the 2023-24 season.</p><p>Richardson was useful last season for the Heat as a solid option for Erik Spoelstra on the wing. Spoelstra’s familiarity with Richardson has helped as well. In 43 games this season (six starts), Richardson averaged 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists on 44/35/94 shooting splits.</p><p>At $3 million, Richardson provides the Heat with solid value. While Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo are the key players on the floor, the team needs role players to step up at various positions. Richardson, before the injury, did just that.</p><p>in his nine-year career, Richardson has played for six franchises, including a pair of stints with the Heat. He’s averaged 11.6 points and shot 36 percent from behind the 3-point line in that span.</p><h2><b>Josh Richardson not the only Heat player to be locked up for next season</b></h2><p>Miami Heat star Bam Adebayo is set to sign a three-year, $166 million contract extension as soon as he is allowed next month.</p><p>Adebayo has emerged as one of the best defensive players in the NBA as he was a finalist this past season for Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, he averaged 19.3 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game for the Heat while shooting 52.1 percent from the field.</p><p>Heat President Pat Riley <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-bam-adebayo-to-sign-166-million-contract-extension">spoke about Adebayo’s growth</a>.</p><p>“His growth spurt from his rookie year to what he is right now has been off the chart,” Riley said. “Everybody knows in the league what his game is. They all know what he does for us, how important he is for us in a lot of areas and so he has to expand also his game. I remember in 1986 after we got beat by Houston, Magic came into me and he said we have to change some things, I have to change, I have to start shooting threes. Back when threes weren’t being shot and more than 10 a game, I got to become a better outside shooter and all this.”</p><p>“So, we put them in pick and rolls and all that stuff in he actually at that time in 86 is already six, seven years in and three championships, he made the changes to become a greater shooter,” Riley continued. “You know a better post-up player, baby Skyhook all of a sudden came into it. So when he was drafted by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/3-major-offseason-fixes-heat-must-make-to-win-2025-nba-finals">the Miami Heat</a> in 2015, it’s fair to say there was a little bit of culture shock for the rookie. And he confirmed that with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-brian-grants-admission-playing-with-young-dwyane-wade-udonis-haslem">a fitting Dwyane Wade</a> story.</p><p>While on former Heat players Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem’s ‘The OGs’ podcast, Richardson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Dtsv8KQOQg&amp;list=PLD0QspPd_-NcD-Fqnkd3A-L41dmE1IJWi&amp;t=664s">recalled the time</a> he met Wade.</p><p>“I remember one of the first days we’re playing pick-up, D-Wade had just got back in town, and I’d never seen him. I’d never seen him,” Richardson said. “We’re playing and I see somebody — we’d played a game already — and I see somebody walk in the gym with nothing on but a pair of bright blue tights. Just tights. And I’m like, ‘He’s not going to play like that, is he? Why is he walking in here like that; where are his pants?'”</p><p>“This ain’t Oklahoma no more, bruh,” Miller said.</p><p>“No, it ain’t. They do it a little different around here,” Richardson replied before continuing with his story of Wade.”He’s playing, he’s posting people up just with his tights on, and I’m just like, ‘I hope this isn’t what it’s going to be like every single day. This is crazy.’</p><p>“The man was getting buckets, like buckets, like professional buckets. I’m trying to focus and I’m like, ‘Alright bro, I guess this is what it’s like.'”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Richardson also likened having to guard Wade that day to the ‘Along Came Polly’ scene in which Ben Stiller’s character has to guard a very sweaty man while playing pickup.</p><h2><b>Josh Richardson remembers rookie season with Heat</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Kelly-Olynyk-Dwyane-Wade-and-Josh-Richardson.jpg"></figure><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-bam-adebayo-recalls-intimidating-first-meeting-with-godfather-pat-riley">The Miami Heat</a> drafted Josh Richardson with the 40th selection in the 2015 draft, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise to Richardson that he wasn’t playing much as a rookie. But in just his third game as an NBA player, he got the chance to start due to real-life circumstances.</p><p>“I started my third game because D-Wade’s son swallowed a marble,” Richardson. “I didn’t even know I was going to wear a jersey until the pregame meeting 30 minutes before. I’m like sitting there, I just did a crazy warm-up because I’m not hooping. Spo’s (Erik Spoelstra) like, ‘J-Rich, you’re starting. I’m like, ‘Alright, bet.’ I go in, I have 8 quick ones, quick ones, hit a 3 from the corner, hit another 3, drove the lane, and then I traveled right after that and got taken out. But it was a good start to the game. And after that. I didn’t play until probably game, like, 42, 43.”</p><p>Despite the expectedly spotty playing time as a rookie, Richardson earned himself a rotational spot on the Heat, which only increased in importance in his second year. By his third year, Richardson was starting every game for the Heat, and in his fourth year, he averaged career-high marks in minutes (34.8), points (16.6), rebounds (3.6), and assists (4.1).</p><p>During the 2019 offseason, the Heat traded Richardson to the Philadelphia 76ers as part of the Jimmy Butler trade. Richardson would end up being traded to the Dallas Mavericks in November 2020 before bouncing around to the Boston Celtics, San Antonio Spurs, and New Orleans Pelicans until choosing to return to Miami by signing with the Heat last offseason. Now, that move makes even more sense, as the Heat will be without guard/forward Josh Richardson for the rest of the season after sustaining a shoulder injury that <a href="https://twitter.com/zachweinberger/status/1765223876009537675?s=46&amp;t=wgLdi4ADSj1gZLKRt-0N2g" rel="noopener">requires surgery</a>, as per Zachary Weinberger, Heat beat reporter for ClutchPoints.</p><p>Richardson will be undergoing the procedure tomorrow, marking the formal end of his return season for the Heat. It’s not clear at the moment what the exact diagnosis is on Richardson’s shoulder, but there could be a tear that has necessitated a surgery to repair.</p><p>Josh Richardson has missed a few games here and there for Miami earlier in the season, although those absences have come as a result of minor injuries. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-josh-richardson-set-miss-time-suffering-shoulder-injury-loss-celtics" rel="noopener">alarm bells rang</a>, however, when the Heat ruled out Richardson back on February 13 against the Milwaukee Bucks due to a shoulder dislocation.</p><p>The initial diagnosis on Richardson was that he was going to miss a few weeks and then the Heat will be re-evaluating him soon thereafter. Clearly, the re-evaluation did not turn out well, with the 30-year old wing now set to miss the rest of the 2023-24 season.</p><p>Josh Richardson has been useful this season for the Heat as a solid option for Erik Spoelstra on the wing. Spoelstra’s familiarity with Richardson has helped as well. In 43 games this season (six starts), Richardson averaged 9.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists on 44/35/94 shooting splits.</p><p>Richardson’s absence further depletes the Heat’s depth; at present, Tyler Herro is <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heat-news-what-is-going-on-with-tyler-herros-changing-injury-status" rel="noopener">on the mend</a> as well for an uncertain period of time due to a knee injury, and it has simply been a rough go for the Heat on the injury front all season long.</p><p>Thankfully for the Heat, they have plenty of capable players to fill in the minutes amid Richardson’s absence. The team will once again be forced to employ the next man up philosophy, which is one it knows better than it should at this point of the year.</p><p>Richardson, who started his career with Miami in 2015 as a second-round pick before being traded a few years later, has been solid in his second stint with the franchise. He is scoring just under 10 points on 44.4 percent shooting from the floor in 25.7 minutes per night.
