Nobody was really asking me about the trade,” Holiday told Spears after a preseason loss on October 8. “Everyone was assuming I was miserable or unhappy with it. But when I got the call from [Celtics president] Brad [Stevens], I was super excited.</p><p>“Being able to see the roster, the type of players, and the character that they have, going to a team like that means a lot. Young or veteran team, I know that a team with good character guys will always be a good situation.”</p><p>The Celtics landed Anfernee Simons in exchange for Holiday, who was traded to the Blazers in 2023 before reaching a buyout to sign with the Celtics. Two years later, many assumed Jrue was headed down a similar path. Despite losing All-Star Jayson Tatum due to a ruptured Achilles, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-payton-pritchard-sends-championship-message-despite-trades-jayson-tatum-injury">Pritchard still has championship aspirations for 2025-26</a> heading into his sixth NBA season.</p><p>Ever since he was selected with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Pritchard has improved facets of his game to eventually become recognized as the league’s best sixth man off the bench. Now, Pritchard has earned the <a href="https://fastbreakjournal.com/boston-celtics-payton-pritchard-start-anfernee-simons-bench-nba-news/" rel="noopener">opportunity to start</a> for Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, per Fastbreak Journal’s Grant Afseth.</p><p>“The Boston Celtics appear poised to elevate Payton Pritchard into the starting lineup while using Anfernee Simons as a high-scoring option off the bench for the 2025–26 season if he remains on the roster,” Afseth reported.</p><p>Pritchard averaged 14.3 points on 47.2% shooting, including 40.7% from deep, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 0.9 steals per game last year. After the Celtics traded Jrue Holiday to the Trail Blazers for Simons, many considered Anfernee to be a potential trade piece for Boston to utilize in a second trade, which never materialized.</p><p>Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens still managed to shed enough salary cap space to take Boston out of the CBA’s dreaded second luxury tax apron. He was right, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/jrue-holiday-trade-grades-for-celtics-blazers-after-stunning-deal">the first one to go was two-time NBA champion Jrue Holiday</a>.</p><p>In late June, the C’s dealt Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, which — ironically — is where the veteran guard was before being traded to Boston in 2023. The two-time All-Star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-brad-stevens-jrue-holiday-legacy-boston">had a winning impact in Beantown</a>, helping the Celtics capture banner No. 18 less than a year after his arrival.</p><p>Holiday will now bring his championship experience to Portland, a city that hasn’t seen an NBA title in nearly 50 years. Meanwhile, White will have to carry on without his fellow guard as the Celtics enter a season of uncertainty.</p><p>When asked about Holiday’s time in Boston, White didn’t shy away from the fact that the Celts’ <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxPvpmTGYgo" rel="noopener">lost a major contributor</a>, via the “White Noise Podcast.”</p><p>“We’ll definitely miss him,” White admitted. “You can’t really replace a Jrue Holiday.”</p><p>White and Holiday formed arguably the greatest defensive backcourt in the league when they shared the floor. And that’s what you always want to be and that’s ultimately going to be our north star as we again retool this thing,” Stevens said after praising Simons, who he called “one of the best shooters” and “one of the best tough shot makers” in the NBA.</p><p>Of course, it would fly in the face of logic for Stevens, as the president and de facto general manager of the Celtics, to publicly criticize Simons or announce he is available for a trade. If Boston is truly trying to move Simons, it is almost a certainty Stevens has made that abundantly clear in private conversations with other front offices.</p><p>Simons, who just turned 26 a month ago, had been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/orlando-magic/magic-trade-proposal-anfernee-simons-celtics">connected to the Orlando Magic</a> before the offseason truly began. A native of Longwood, Florida, Simons spent most of his life in Central Florida before being selected by the Trail Blazers with the 24th overall pick in the 2018 draft.</p><p>With Portland, Simons averaged 15 points and 3 assists per game (numbers largely deflated by his first three years in the league). Now, just a year later, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/celtics-news-brad-stevens-expectations-jayson-tatum-injury-bombshell-trades">everything has come apart in Boston</a>.</p><p>The Celtics’ repeat bid was stymied by a pair of heroic comebacks from the New York Knicks and officially put to bed by a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/celtics-news-brad-stevens-best-thing-jayson-tatum-next-step">devastating torn Achilles suffered by Jayson Tatum</a>. That injury has put next season in jeopardy in Boston and forced Brad Stevens and the rest of the front office to take a long, hard look at the roster.</p><p>In the end, it wasn’t worth paying second apron penalties for a roster that isn’t likely to compete for a championship in 2025-26 without Tatum on the floor. As a result, the Celtics sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks and Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in a pair of trades this offseason.</p><p>It’s a bittersweet moment for Stevens and company, as both Holiday and Porzingis were a big part of that 2024 title run. Holiday quickly became a fan-favorite in Boston after spending a long time with the Milwaukee Bucks. After the trade was made official, Stevens talked about the legacy that Holiday <a href="https://x.com/kerryeggers/status/1943089078045675803" rel="noopener">built for himself</a> during his two seasons with the Celtics, via Kerry Eggers.</p><p>“I think he stamped his Hall of fame candidacy here, if he didn’t already have it,” Stevens said. “We’ll look forward watching and following him from afar. He is as good a person as you could ever have in your building and as part of your team.”</p><p>Of course, Holiday was re-routed to the Celtics from Portland in the trade that sent Damian Lillard to Milwaukee during the summer of 2023, and now he is back with the Blazers, at least for now. Even though his time in Boston was short, he will always be remembered as one of the missing pieces that took the Celtics from a feisty contender in the Eastern Conference to a champion.</p><p>The UCLA product has won a pair of NBA Championships after starring on the 2021 Bucks title team. However, time and experience haven’t simplified the personal side of the trade process for him.</p><p>This summer, he’s already made tough phone calls to veteran guard Jrue Holiday and center Kristaps Porzingis to deliver the news that the Celtics were trading them.</p><p>“It’s never easy,” Stevens told ClutchPoints during a Tuesday morning presser. “They’re still hard phone calls to make. It’s harder to think about not seeing Jrue and KP in and around the facility every day. That’s the hardest part.”</p><p>But just because those calls were difficult doesn’t mean they were unexpected. Before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-breaks-silence-jrue-holiday-kristaps-porzingis-trades">the Celtics dealt Porzingis and Holiday</a>, Stevens explained to them that they might not be back in Beantown next season.</p><p>“Well, Porzingis was asleep [when I called him], and by the time he woke up, I was asleep, but he knew he was probably gonna get traded, so I think he was okay by then,” Stevens recalled. “I actually talked to both those guys a couple weeks before, and just said, like, ‘Listen, there’s a chance that you’re back, but there’s also a high chance that you’re not.'”</p><p>Porzingis and Holiday arrived in Boston in 2023 and helped the C’s capture their 18th title in franchise history less than a year later. Although Stevens and the rest of the front office would’ve preferred to retain them, that simply wasn’t realistic under the new CBA.</p><h2><b>Why did Brad Stevens trade Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis?</b></h2><p>Prior to Boston’s two trades, the Celtics were deep into the second apron, putting them at risk of facing severe financial penalties and restrictions. Moving Porzingis and Holiday gives Stevens a lot more wiggle room, and he wasn’t shy about admitting that.</p><p>“I mean, the second apron is why those trades happened,” <a href="https://x.com/danield1214/status/1942612317679804693?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1942612317679804693%7Ctwgr%5Ead5b27b6e4aa84968a6b8a6903b9a97156181189%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.clutchpoints.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D3441292action%3Dedit" rel="noopener">he said honestly</a>. “I think that those were pretty obvious. That yield helped soften the blow of the trades for Stevens, yet he couldn’t pretend that they didn’t lose anything.</p><p>“[Jrue] is as good of a person as you could ever have in your building and as part of your team,” Stevens praised. “And KP, he fought some stuff, health-wise, in the last two years, but when he played, he was awfully good…Those are not easy trades to make. Those are not easy phone calls. </p><p>“Obviously, those guys have been around the league a long time. They knew the CBA. They knew that it was a high likelihood that they could be part of the move, and they were communicated that before, but it’s still hard when you are.”</p><h2><b>Celtics expect to be competitive in 2025-26</b></h2><p>Even without Porzingis and Holiday, Stevens was optimistic about the Celtics’ ability to put together a competitive 2025-26 campaign. The only true centers they have at the moment are Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/boston-celtics-2025-nba-draft-grades-every-pick">rookie Amari Williams</a> — all guys who lack serious NBA experience.</p><p>“So we’ll have to do that by committee,” Stevens responded when asked about the center dilemma. “That will not be the group that people will single out, based on paper, on what they’ve done with their careers thus far, as our strongest position, but it’s up to them to prove it otherwise.”</p><p>Whether or not Boston trades for more help or mostly sticks with what it has remains to be seen, but either way, its upcoming season is full of uncertainty. However, he played through a mallet finger injury for a fair chunk of the 2024-25 campaign and was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-jrue-holiday-hit-with-concerning-injury-updates-for-game-3-vs-magic">sidelined for three games in the first round of the playoffs</a> due to a hamstring issue.</p><p>It’s not clear what exact health problem the Blazers were troubled by. The longtime elite defensive guard was dealt <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-boston-pulls-off-stunning-jrue-holiday-trade-blazers-anfernee-simons">to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons</a> and two second-round draft picks. Initially, the consensus was that Boston made a terrific move to get off Holiday’s contract while acquiring a younger guard in Simons.</p><p>Garnett, however, is skeptical that this move is in Boston’s best interest and explained his reason on the All the Smoke podcast. The Hall of Fame power forward <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1939781181878190405" rel="noopener">compared the trade</a> to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-damian-lillard-trade-blazers-suns">Milwaukee Bucks-Damian Lillard blockbuster</a>, which also included Holiday.</p><p>“I don’t know if I would have given up Jrue Holiday for scoring. Eye to eye it looks like you gave up scoring for defense, but you don’t see all the small intangible things that Jrue Holiday brings. So it made the Jrue Holiday-Dame Lillard trade like, ‘Oh s**t’, but then you missed all this other s**t that he did that impacted the game.”</p><p>Garnett does make a good point that Jrue Holiday, on a game-by-game basis, makes winning plays that don’t always show up on the stat sheet. However, the situation in Boston is entirely different from what was happening with the Milwaukee Bucks at the time. The Bucks only had one elite point-of-attack defender, and outside of Holiday, they were very slow on the perimeter. When Jrue was traded, the entire defensive scheme of drop coverage fell apart because the Bucks no longer had a player who was efficient at fighting over screens.</p><p>The Celtics, on the other hand, have several elite defenders still on the roster, specifically Derrick White. In addition, Holiday’s contract was going to be tough to justify for a team that was projected to be well over the second apron and seemingly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/damian-lillard-shares-photo-with-celtics-jayson-tatum-amid-achilles-rehabs">without Jayson Tatum for the year</a>. Now, Boston is no longer over the second apron after trading the six-time All-Defensive selection and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-news-atlanta-acquiring-kristaps-porzingis-3-team-trade-celtics-nets">starting center Kristaps Porzingis</a>. In addition, the franchise can take a flyer on an explosive offensive player like Simons, who is just entering his prime. Simons only has one more year on his deal and then becomes a restricted free agent.</p><p>Overall, in the big picture, this move was worth it for Boston, especially with the two second-round picks added. The second, some 100 hours following the first, sent Holiday to Boston for two first-rounders, Robert Williams III, and Malcolm Brogdon.</p><p>Now, Holiday is back with Portland as the Celtics attempt to clean up their cap sheet ahead of a year in which star player Jayson Tatum is not expected to play as a result of an Achilles tendon injury suffered in the playoffs. I’ll be surprised if Portland doesn’t move him on if they can, because right now he does not want to go there.”</p><p>Holiday would seemingly have little leverage to get out of Portland if he really does want to. While the 35-year-old guard’s skillset is certainly best suited for a legitimate contender, he is entering just the second season of a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/players/a04e0912/jrue-holiday/contract"> four-year, $134.4 million contract extension</a> that he signed last April.
