Despite losing All-Star Jayson Tatum due to a ruptured Achilles, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-payton-pritchard-sends-championship-message-despite-trades-jayson-tatum-injury">Pritchard still has championship aspirations for 2025-26</a> heading into his sixth NBA season.</p><p>Ever since he was selected with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Pritchard has improved facets of his game to eventually become recognized as the league’s best sixth man off the bench. Now, Pritchard has earned the <a href="https://fastbreakjournal.com/boston-celtics-payton-pritchard-start-anfernee-simons-bench-nba-news/" rel="noopener">opportunity to start</a> for Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla, per Fastbreak Journal’s Grant Afseth.</p><p>“The Boston Celtics appear poised to elevate Payton Pritchard into the starting lineup while using Anfernee Simons as a high-scoring option off the bench for the 2025–26 season if he remains on the roster,” Afseth reported.</p><p>Pritchard averaged 14.3 points on 47.2% shooting, including 40.7% from deep, 3.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 0.9 steals per game last year. After the Celtics traded Jrue Holiday to the Trail Blazers for Simons, many considered Anfernee to be a potential trade piece for Boston to utilize in a second trade, which never materialized.</p><p>Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens still managed to shed enough salary cap space to take Boston out of the CBA’s dreaded second luxury tax apron. He was right, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/jrue-holiday-trade-grades-for-celtics-blazers-after-stunning-deal">the first one to go was two-time NBA champion Jrue Holiday</a>.</p><p>In late June, the C’s dealt Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers, which — ironically — is where the veteran guard was before being traded to Boston in 2023. The two-time All-Star <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-brad-stevens-jrue-holiday-legacy-boston">had a winning impact in Beantown</a>, helping the Celtics capture banner No. 18 less than a year after his arrival.</p><p>Holiday will now bring his championship experience to Portland, a city that hasn’t seen an NBA title in nearly 50 years. Meanwhile, White will have to carry on without his fellow guard as the Celtics enter a season of uncertainty.</p><p>When asked about Holiday’s time in Boston, White didn’t shy away from the fact that the Celts’ <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxPvpmTGYgo" rel="noopener">lost a major contributor</a>, via the “White Noise Podcast.”</p><p>“We’ll definitely miss him,” White admitted. “You can’t really replace a Jrue Holiday.”</p><p>White and Holiday formed arguably the greatest defensive backcourt in the league when they shared the floor. And that’s what you always want to be and that’s ultimately going to be our north star as we again retool this thing,” Stevens said after praising Simons, who he called “one of the best shooters” and “one of the best tough shot makers” in the NBA.</p><p>Of course, it would fly in the face of logic for Stevens, as the president and de facto general manager of the Celtics, to publicly criticize Simons or announce he is available for a trade. If Boston is truly trying to move Simons, it is almost a certainty Stevens has made that abundantly clear in private conversations with other front offices.</p><p>Simons, who just turned 26 a month ago, had been <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/orlando-magic/magic-trade-proposal-anfernee-simons-celtics">connected to the Orlando Magic</a> before the offseason truly began. A native of Longwood, Florida, Simons spent most of his life in Central Florida before being selected by the Trail Blazers with the 24th overall pick in the 2018 draft.</p><p>With Portland, Simons averaged 15 points and 3 assists per game (numbers largely deflated by his first three years in the league). Now, just a year later, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/celtics-news-brad-stevens-expectations-jayson-tatum-injury-bombshell-trades">everything has come apart in Boston</a>.</p><p>The Celtics’ repeat bid was stymied by a pair of heroic comebacks from the New York Knicks and officially put to bed by a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/celtics-news-brad-stevens-best-thing-jayson-tatum-next-step">devastating torn Achilles suffered by Jayson Tatum</a>. That injury has put next season in jeopardy in Boston and forced Brad Stevens and the rest of the front office to take a long, hard look at the roster.</p><p>In the end, it wasn’t worth paying second apron penalties for a roster that isn’t likely to compete for a championship in 2025-26 without Tatum on the floor. As a result, the Celtics sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Atlanta Hawks and Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers in a pair of trades this offseason.</p><p>It’s a bittersweet moment for Stevens and company, as both Holiday and Porzingis were a big part of that 2024 title run. Holiday quickly became a fan-favorite in Boston after spending a long time with the Milwaukee Bucks. After the trade was made official, Stevens talked about the legacy that Holiday <a href="https://x.com/kerryeggers/status/1943089078045675803" rel="noopener">built for himself</a> during his two seasons with the Celtics, via Kerry Eggers.</p><p>“I think he stamped his Hall of fame candidacy here, if he didn’t already have it,” Stevens said. “We’ll look forward watching and following him from afar. He is as good a person as you could ever have in your building and as part of your team.”</p><p>Of course, Holiday was re-routed to the Celtics from Portland in the trade that sent Damian Lillard to Milwaukee during the summer of 2023, and now he is back with the Blazers, at least for now. Even though his time in Boston was short, he will always be remembered as one of the missing pieces that took the Celtics from a feisty contender in the Eastern Conference to a champion.</p><p>The UCLA product has won a pair of NBA Championships after starring on the 2021 Bucks title team. However, time and experience haven’t simplified the personal side of the trade process for him.</p><p>This summer, he’s already made tough phone calls to veteran guard Jrue Holiday and center Kristaps Porzingis to deliver the news that the Celtics were trading them.</p><p>“It’s never easy,” Stevens told ClutchPoints during a Tuesday morning presser. “They’re still hard phone calls to make. It’s harder to think about not seeing Jrue and KP in and around the facility every day. That’s the hardest part.”</p><p>But just because those calls were difficult doesn’t mean they were unexpected. Before <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-breaks-silence-jrue-holiday-kristaps-porzingis-trades">the Celtics dealt Porzingis and Holiday</a>, Stevens explained to them that they might not be back in Beantown next season.</p><p>“Well, Porzingis was asleep [when I called him], and by the time he woke up, I was asleep, but he knew he was probably gonna get traded, so I think he was okay by then,” Stevens recalled. “I actually talked to both those guys a couple weeks before, and just said, like, ‘Listen, there’s a chance that you’re back, but there’s also a high chance that you’re not.'”</p><p>Porzingis and Holiday arrived in Boston in 2023 and helped the C’s capture their 18th title in franchise history less than a year later. Although Stevens and the rest of the front office would’ve preferred to retain them, that simply wasn’t realistic under the new CBA.</p><h2><b>Why did Brad Stevens trade Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis?</b></h2><p>Prior to Boston’s two trades, the Celtics were deep into the second apron, putting them at risk of facing severe financial penalties and restrictions. Moving Porzingis and Holiday gives Stevens a lot more wiggle room, and he wasn’t shy about admitting that.</p><p>“I mean, the second apron is why those trades happened,” <a href="https://x.com/danield1214/status/1942612317679804693?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1942612317679804693%7Ctwgr%5Ead5b27b6e4aa84968a6b8a6903b9a97156181189%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwp.clutchpoints.com%2Fwp-admin%2Fpost.php%3Fpost%3D3441292action%3Dedit" rel="noopener">he said honestly</a>. “I think that those were pretty obvious. That yield helped soften the blow of the trades for Stevens, yet he couldn’t pretend that they didn’t lose anything.</p><p>“[Jrue] is as good of a person as you could ever have in your building and as part of your team,” Stevens praised. “And KP, he fought some stuff, health-wise, in the last two years, but when he played, he was awfully good…Those are not easy trades to make. Those are not easy phone calls. </p><p>“Obviously, those guys have been around the league a long time. They knew the CBA. They knew that it was a high likelihood that they could be part of the move, and they were communicated that before, but it’s still hard when you are.”</p><h2><b>Celtics expect to be competitive in 2025-26</b></h2><p>Even without Porzingis and Holiday, Stevens was optimistic about the Celtics’ ability to put together a competitive 2025-26 campaign. The only true centers they have at the moment are Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/boston-celtics-2025-nba-draft-grades-every-pick">rookie Amari Williams</a> — all guys who lack serious NBA experience.</p><p>“So we’ll have to do that by committee,” Stevens responded when asked about the center dilemma. “That will not be the group that people will single out, based on paper, on what they’ve done with their careers thus far, as our strongest position, but it’s up to them to prove it otherwise.”</p><p>Whether or not Boston trades for more help or mostly sticks with what it has remains to be seen, but either way, its upcoming season is full of uncertainty. However, he played through a mallet finger injury for a fair chunk of the 2024-25 campaign and was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-jayson-tatum-jrue-holiday-hit-with-concerning-injury-updates-for-game-3-vs-magic">sidelined for three games in the first round of the playoffs</a> due to a hamstring issue.</p><p>It’s not clear what exact health problem the Blazers were troubled by. Either way, they still wanted Holiday, a two-time NBA champion who spent four days with them in 2023 before shipping off to Boston and immediately making his winning presence felt.</p><p>“A recent review of Holiday’s medicals revealed nothing substantial enough to warrant the trade being negated,” Fentress reported. “However, there was enough there to lead the Blazers to slightly alter the terms of the deal.”</p><p>While the Celtics are left without a pair of picks, they currently have a sizable stash of second-round selections that they can use as trade bait down the line. Initially, the consensus was that Boston made a terrific move to get off Holiday’s contract while acquiring a younger guard in Simons.</p><p>Garnett, however, is skeptical that this move is in Boston’s best interest and explained his reason on the All the Smoke podcast. The Hall of Fame power forward <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1939781181878190405" rel="noopener">compared the trade</a> to the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-news-damian-lillard-trade-blazers-suns">Milwaukee Bucks-Damian Lillard blockbuster</a>, which also included Holiday.</p><p>“I don’t know if I would have given up Jrue Holiday for scoring. Eye to eye it looks like you gave up scoring for defense, but you don’t see all the small intangible things that Jrue Holiday brings. So it made the Jrue Holiday-Dame Lillard trade like, ‘Oh s**t’, but then you missed all this other s**t that he did that impacted the game.”</p><p>Garnett does make a good point that Jrue Holiday, on a game-by-game basis, makes winning plays that don’t always show up on the stat sheet. However, the situation in Boston is entirely different from what was happening with the Milwaukee Bucks at the time. The Bucks only had one elite point-of-attack defender, and outside of Holiday, they were very slow on the perimeter. When Jrue was traded, the entire defensive scheme of drop coverage fell apart because the Bucks no longer had a player who was efficient at fighting over screens.</p><p>The Celtics, on the other hand, have several elite defenders still on the roster, specifically Derrick White. In addition, Holiday’s contract was going to be tough to justify for a team that was projected to be well over the second apron and seemingly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/damian-lillard-shares-photo-with-celtics-jayson-tatum-amid-achilles-rehabs">without Jayson Tatum for the year</a>. Now, Boston is no longer over the second apron after trading the six-time All-Defensive selection and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-news-atlanta-acquiring-kristaps-porzingis-3-team-trade-celtics-nets">starting center Kristaps Porzingis</a>. In addition, the franchise can take a flyer on an explosive offensive player like Simons, who is just entering his prime. Simons only has one more year on his deal and then becomes a restricted free agent.</p><p>Overall, in the big picture, this move was worth it for Boston, especially with the two second-round picks added. This time, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/3-reasons-celtics-won-jrue-holiday-anfernee-simons-trade">Holiday and the Blazers are reunited once again</a> and seemingly for a longer period of time.</p><p>Less than two years ago, Portland effectively reshaped the Eastern Conference with a pair of trades, both of which involved Holiday. The first saw franchise cornerstone Damian Lillard acquired by the Milwaukee Bucks in a three-team deal that netted the Blazers DeAndre Ayton, Toumani Camara, a first-round pick, and Holiday. The second, some 100 hours following the first, sent Holiday to Boston for two first-rounders, Robert Williams III, and Malcolm Brogdon.</p><p>Now, Holiday is back with Portland as the Celtics attempt to clean up their cap sheet ahead of a year in which star player Jayson Tatum is not expected to play as a result of an Achilles tendon injury suffered in the playoffs. I’ll be surprised if Portland doesn’t move him on if they can, because right now he does not want to go there.”</p><p>Holiday would seemingly have little leverage to get out of Portland if he really does want to. While the 35-year-old guard’s skillset is certainly best suited for a legitimate contender, he is entering just the second season of a<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/players/a04e0912/jrue-holiday/contract"> four-year, $134.4 million contract extension</a> that he signed last April. Well, you've come to the right place.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">Editorials</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>When news broke that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/celtics-news-boston-pulls-off-stunning-jrue-holiday-trade-blazers-anfernee-simons">Portland Trail Blazers were re-acquiring Jrue Holiday</a> in a trade with the Boston Celtics centered around Anfernee Simons, it took the NBA world by storm.</p><p>Suddenly, the 2024 NBA Champions were blowing up their core, with the Simons deal <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/atlanta-hawks/hawks-news-atlanta-acquiring-kristaps-porzingis-3-team-trade-celtics-nets">serving as an appetizer for the Kristaps Porzingis trade to come</a>, and as a result, the very direction of the Eastern Conference has shifted for the foreseeable future.</p><p>But what about the Trail Blazers? Why was a team in the basement of the Western Conference looking to add a win-now player in Holiday and give up on a homegrown player in Simons, who is still only 26 years old? Well, while some of that has to do with Simons’ fit with the Celtics’ core, which is a bit redundant with younger scorers like Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, it might also signify a change in the Blazers’ plans moving forward, with the team looking to turn the page on their older core in favor of a young crop of emerging stars.</p><p>Could the Trail Blazers keep Holiday around to help Henderson and Sharp out both as a mentor and as a defensive backcourt player who knows how to win? Sure thing, but they would be wise to <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/editorials/sources-implications-celtics-blazers-trade-jrue-holiday-anfernee-simons">at least consider re-routing the 35-year-old guard, too</a>, as they could potentially secure a quality return for his services that fits the team’s long-term needs.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Jrue-Holiday.jpg"><figcaption>Benny Sieu-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2><b>The Trail Blazers should re-route Jrue Holiday to Utah</b></h2><p>The Celtics acquired Simons from Portland for one reason above all others: to save money.</p><p>Now granted, in some trades, it really can be a win-win for both sides, with one team looking for a guard and another after a big. But in this case, Simons was explicitly targeted not just because he could help to replace Jayson Tatum’s scoring pop but because he saved the team $20 million against the cap versus Holiday’s figure, considering they were still over the second apron before the Porzingis trade.</p><p>Because the Celtics wanted to get off of that extra money, they were only able to get back Simons and two seconds for Holiday’s services, which is less than <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/h/holidjr01.html" rel="noopener">the package</a>, Malcolm Brogdon, Robert Williams, a 2024 1st round draft pick and a 2029 1st round draft pick, that they originally surrendered back in 2023. Granted, Holiday is two years older and is coming off a season where his numbers dipped a tad, but securing his services for less than a first-round pick is a fine piece of general managing from Portland’s side of the deal.</p><p>But what would make it even better? Re-routing Holiday for a first-round pick and the requisite contract(s) the team would need to take back in order to make the deal kosher in the eyes of the NBA?</p><p>As things presently stand, the Trail Blazers are <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/portland-trail-blazers/cap/_/year/2025" rel="noopener">well under the first apron</a> according to Spotrac, with the ability to still aggregate contracts even after the Holiday deal becomes official. Because they have an asset that almost every contending team in the NBA would like, and they can take on one or more contracts that maybe aren’t the best from another NBA team and still have an ability to ask for a quality return from an asset standpoint.</p><p>Could a team like the Utah Jazz, who have a deep treasure trove of assets, look to add Holiday to their roster as they attempt to get where they want to be, aggregating the contracts of, say, Colin Sexton and John Collins for Holiday and Matisse Thybulle with Minnesota’s 21st overall first-round pick in this year’s draft and a future second-round pick thrown to make it worth Portland’s time? Would adding another young player just outside of the lottery be worth adding two more players with no long-term future on the team, who Portland could then trade again mid-season if a contender needs a combo forward or a combo guard to really take their offense over the top?</p><p>Considering that’s exactly what the Trail Blazers did with Holiday the first time he landed in Portland, with Malcolm Brogdon already moved and “Timelord” still available for a center-needy team like the Los Angeles Lakers, who may have to pay a premium for his services, that feels like a resounding yes.</p><p>Normally, when a team makes a trade, it’s a finished product. Celtics fans are watching various highlight videos of Simons as they prepare to see him suit up for the green and white this fall, and so are the Hawks faithful who just became the biggest Porzingis-heads in the NBA. But for Portland, Holiday’s on-court debut isn’t a lock just yet, as he very well could end up playing elsewhere before the end of the week, let alone the start of the regular season.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

After Jayson Tatum tore his ACL in the second round of the playoffs, Boston’s payroll became a big issue. The Celtics took the first step in cleaning up their books by <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-boston-pulls-off-stunning-jrue-holiday-trade-blazers-anfernee-simons">trading Jrue Holiday to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons</a>. However, that might not be the only move they make.</p><p>Players across Boston’s rosters have heard their names thrown around in trade talks. Fans wonder if <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-rumors-bostons-trade-outlook-positive-twist">Kristaps Porzingis, Derrick White, or Jaylen Brown will be traded later on this summer</a>. Experts think that at least one more major contract will be moved in exchange for an expiring deals. Right now, the most popular name is Porzingis.</p><p>The seven-footer was a key piece of the Celtics team that won the title in 2024. He has put up better numbers in past seasons, but <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/stats/_/id/3102531/kristaps-porzingis" rel="noopener">his two years in Boston</a> might be the best of his career. Teams around the league looking for centers will line up to make offers for Porzingis as soon as she becomes available.</p><p>One of the teams that makes the most sense is the New Orleans Pelicans. We put together one possible deal that sends the Latvian All-Star to the Pelicans.</p><p>Celtics receive: G Dejounte Murray</p><p>Pelicans receive: F/C Kristaps Porzingis, 2028 first round pick(BOS)</p><p>This trade gives New Orleans the stretch-five they need to put alongside Zion Williamson. The former All-Star is one of the most explosive athletes in the league. However, his lack of outside shooting and health struggles have held his team back.</p><p>If the Pelicans are healthy throughout next season, the duo of Williamson and Porzingis could play perfectly next to one another. It puts more pressure on Jose Alvarado and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-orleans-pelicans/pelicans-news-wizards-cj-mccollum-jordan-poole-trade">newly acquired New Orleans point guard Jordan Poole</a> to shoot well enough to get away with Williamson playing as the point guard.</p><p>The Celtics, on the other hand, get a player that fits perfectly into what Joe Mazzulla wants to do. Murray’s efficiency from deep range needs some work, but the defensive trio of him, Brown, and White would be formidable.</p><p>Porzingis’ health history hurts his value, but he is the next expendable contract that the Celtics could move. They might have to part with more draft equity in order to make the deal happen, though.</p><p>Giving up a pick in 2028 could mean nothing. Late Monday night, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/boston-celtics/celtics-news-boston-pulls-off-stunning-jrue-holiday-trade-blazers-anfernee-simons">Trail Blazers traded Anfernee Simons and two picks for Jrue Holiday</a>. Portland general manager Joe Cronin made the first move of many, but the trade spurred Matisse Thybulle to make a decision on his contract.</p><p>The six-year forward <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1937587776540557506" rel="noopener">opted into his player option</a> for next season, worth $11.5 million. The 28-year-old guard is now in the last year of his three-year, $33 million deal he signed in 2022. Now that he has opted in, the Blazers have another player that they could use in a trade later on this summer.</p><p>Thybulle does not figure to be a big piece of Cronin’s plans moving forward. He played in just 15 games this season, averaging just over 20 minutes per night. He enjoyed a bigger role in Portland after joining them in 2023.</p><p>Now that the Trail Blazers have Holiday in the mix, Thybulle’s future is much more murky. The 6-foot-5 guard brings value on the defensive end, but his lackluster offensive skillset has him in the back of head coach Chauncey Billups’ rotation. Portland could be very aggressive as the trade season continues, and Thybulle’s contract is an easy one to move.</p><p>The Trail Blazers traded for Holiday back in 2023, but he did not stay on the team for long. After sending Simons to Boston, Holiday could potentially take over at the point guard spot.</p><p>The far more likely outcome is that Portland will flip Holiday once again. Thybulle could help facilitate the move or help the Trail Blazers reach a certain threshold in a different trade.</p><p>Regardless of what happens, Thybulle’s player option gives him security for one more season. He is one of many names to watch as Cronin guides Portland through the offseason. However, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/jrue-holiday-trade-grades-for-celtics-blazers-after-stunning-deal">the success of the Trail Blazers’ trade for Holiday</a> remains to be seen.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
