In addition, kicker Michael Badgley (groin), tight end Virgil Green (groin) and tight end Hunter Henry (knee) will not play.</p><p>Wide receiver Travis Benjamin (hip) is doubtful. Cornerback Casey Heyward (back) and linebacker Drue Tranquill (ankle) are both questionable.</p><p>With Mike Williams out, wide receiver Keenan Allen will carry the brunt of the workload in the passing game. That’s especially true considering Benjamin, Green and Henry are out. In the wake of Williams and Benjamin’s absence, Dontrelle Inman, Geremy Davis and Andre Patton will see an uptick in snaps on Sunday.</p><p>Running back  Melvin Gordon — who recently came back to the true following a lengthy holdout — could play with Justin Jackson out. Though early indications pointed to Gordon sitting the week to get back in football shape, coach Anthony Lynn didn’t rule out the possibility of him playing.</p><p>If Gordon doesn’t play, Austin Ekeler will handle a high workload. Troymaine Pope would be his backup. The team can also call Detrez Newman up from the practice squad.</p><p>The Chargers are one of the most beat-up teams in the NFL. Through three weeks of play, they’ve lost key pieces to their offense, defense and special teams. Before the season started, they lost their All-Pro second-year safety Derwin James to a stress fracture in his right foot (which will sideline him for three months). Fortunately, head coach Anthony Lynn is confident that his backups will be able to fill the void.</p><p>Running backs Austin Ekeler and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/Justin-Jackson/b0a809c9">Justin Jackson</a> have seen their roles increase in Gordon’s absence. <a href="https://www.espn.com/blog/los-angeles-chargers/post/_/id/26626/austin-ekeler-justin-jackson-ready-to-share-rb-load-with-melvin-gordon-out">According to</a> ESPN’s Eric D. Williams, Lynn will be relying on the duo to lead the backfield:</p><blockquote>“I’ve always used those guys as a tandem,” Lynn said. “That’s not going to change. We’re going to put guys in good positions to do what they do best.”</blockquote><p>Lynn’s comments indicate that the two will likely split touches going into the season. With Gordon out, he hopes Ekeler and Jackson can emerge into a viable 1-2 punch.</p><p>The Chargers have managed to secure plenty of bang for their buck when it comes to running backs. Ekeler has largely played a complementary role to Gordon since signing with the team as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2017 campaign. He etched out an integral role for himself thanks to his prowess as a receiver out of the backfield.</p><p>Jackson arrived a year later as a seventh-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. Although his opportunities as a rookie were limited, it is clear that he has made quite the impression on the coaching staff through training camp and the preseason.
