The former lottery pick of the Miami Heat has been a jack-of-all-trades player for the team, filling every role possible as they <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-biggest-need-2023-nba-trade-deadline" rel="noopener">fight for a playoff spot</a>. It seems like he’s currently in a good place. However, this wasn’t always the case. In a heartbreaking story, Justise Winslow and his brother Josh <a href="https://theathletic.com/4082236/2023/01/20/justise-winslow-portland-trailblazers/?source=twitterhq" rel="noopener">revealed the struggles</a> the former experienced in his career.</p><p>The story talks about Justise Winslow’s struggles with alcoholism and mental health, and how it was affected by his injuries and overall play. The Blazers forward’ brother talked about a call he got from his former coach Erik Spoelstra back when he was playing for the Heat that summed up his mental health at the time.</p><p>“Spo was the first person who reached out to me,” Josh said. “He was like, ‘I FaceTimed Justise today and it looked like he hadn’t shaved for weeks, or left his room.’ And everybody on the team was like, ‘That’s not the guy we drafted.’ It got dark for him, for sure.”</p><p>Justise Winslow had a promising start to his career in Miami, but injuries derailed the first few years of his career. Evidently, that sent the former first-round pick into a depressive state. Winslow developed destructive tendencies, constantly going to nightclubs to sleep with different women and get drunk.</p><p>Thankfully, Winslow was able to find his footing again thanks to Erik Spoelstra, his brother, and his own efforts. Now, he’s continuing his redemption tour. He’s currently dealing with an ankle injury, but he’s definitely more equipped mentally to deal with this setback.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

The only positive to come from it all is it’s allowed a number of players to get NBA opportunities. It’s also allowed <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/tag/justise-winslow/" rel="noopener">Justise Winslow</a> to find some rhythm as the backup, small-ball center for the Clippers.</p><p>Winslow has really found his groove over the last three games, averaging 11.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 21.9 minutes per game off the Clippers’ bench.</p><p>In the team’s latest loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Winslow was in a lineup with fellow left-handed players Jay Scrubb and Amir Coffey. That prompted a question from one reporter as to whether he’d be intrigued in a five-man, all-lefty lineup featuring Scrubb, Coffey, himself, Isaiah Hartenstein and Luke Kennard.</p><p>That’s when Winslow stopped the reporter to let the room know that Kennard, the league’s second best three-point shooter, was not actually left handed.</p><p>“Luke’s not left-handed, so don’t let him try to be left-handed,” Winslow joked. “No. ain’t nothing Natural, he’s right handed, he’s not left handed.”</p><p>“So he just lies to everybody?” the Clippers reporter asked?</p><p>“He lies,” Winslow confirmed.</p><p>Winslow was so confident about his statement, that he claimed to have had a conversation with Kennard himself about it.</p><p>“I think I saw something about LaMelo and like LaMelo’s dad made him. Like, my dad did that to one of my brothers too, so I understand. The best season of his young NBA career came during the 2018-19 campaign, when he averaged 12.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 1.1 steals per game for the Heat.</p><p>If there’s one thing Winslow has struggled with throughout his career, it’s shooting efficiency. Winslow is a career 41.1 percent shooter from the field and 32.4 percent shooter from beyond the arc. He’s never shot better than 43 percent from the field, and that came during the aforementioned best statistical season of his career.</p><p>The Clippers recently reached agreements on deals with Nicolas Batum, Reggie Jackson, and <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/kawhi-leonard/af27097c">Kawhi Leonard</a>, essentially running it back with last year’s team. Leonard, however, is expected to miss a good chunk, if not all, of next season as he recovers from surgery on his partially torn left ACL. </p><p>The injury to Leonard opened the door for Winslow, whose playmaking, ball-handling, and defense are something the Clippers lacked heading into next season. It’s a low-risk move, given he’s not going to make more than the taxpayer mid-level exception, if that.</p><p>The former 10th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, Winslow will be playing in his seventh NBA season and third NBA team in that span.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Says Justise should be ready early in the season but Jaren will still be out "a minute."</p><p>— Mark Giannotto (@mgiannotto) <a href="https://twitter.com/mgiannotto/status/1329305028230860803?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw" target="_blank">November 19, 2020</a></p></blockquote><p></p></figure><p>Jaren Jackson Jr. is recovering from a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-jaren-jackson-jr-out-for-season-after-suffering-knee-injury/">meniscus tear</a> in his left knee, while Justise Winslow is rehabbing a hip injury.</p><p>Winslow has yet to make his Grizzlies debut after being acquired from the Miami Heat in the Andre Iguodala deal prior to the 2020 trade deadline.</p><p>Jackson Jr. appeared in 57 games for the Grizzlies in 2019-20. He averaged 17.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 46.9 percent from the field, 39.4 percent from beyond the arc and 74.7 percent from the free-throw line. He’s the second-best player on the team behind only 2020 Rookie of the Year Ja Morant.</p><p>With the Heat, Winslow compiled averages of 9.0 points, 5.4 boards and 2.7 assists in 241 games. He has yet to live up to his potential after being selected with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft out of Duke.</p><p>The Grizzlies are hoping his nagging hip injury isn’t a long-term ailment.</p><p>Memphis shocked the basketball world in 2019-20 by almost making the playoffs at Walt Disney World despite franchise cornerstones Mike Conley and Marc Gasol no longer being on the team. The Grizzlies were one win away from reaching the playoffs. They lost to the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA’s first-ever play-in game down in Orlando, Florida.</p><p>While the Grizzlies have a bright future with Morant and Jackson Jr. leading the way, Memphis is privately hoping injuries don’t ruin something special.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

A medical evaluation revealed the hip injury, which will effectively push him out of the restart.</p><p>The Grizzlies had just started to get their cogs back in action, as they got a healthy Jaren Jackson Jr. and Brandon Clarke into Training Camp 2.0. Losing Winslow puts them out of another potential creator, as the forward has logged a lot more minutes at point guard this season.</p><p>Winslow was acquired in a trade with the Miami Heat, where he had started to develop as a primary playmaker. According to the 24-year-old, he just does not believe that the proposed bubble plan is safe for the players, coaches, and everyone else who will be involved in the restart.</p><p>Winslow recently aired his qualms with retired NBA player and current basketball analyst Caron Butler on the <a href="https://twitter.com/NBA/status/1274099690288660481?s=20">NBA’s official Twitter account</a>:</p><blockquote>“The bubble is tricky, man,” the Grizzlies young gun said, via <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29336413/grizzlies-justise-winslow-says-finishing-nba-season-orlando-tricky">ESPN’s Andrew Lopez</a>. “From the COVID standpoint, I don’t think it’s a great idea just to have all these people in a bubble and tight spaces. It’s almost the opposite of social distancing. We’re going to have workers who are working for Disney; they’re going to be going home and seeing their family and doing whatever they want to do, but then they are going to come back.“I’m sure everyone is going to be tested a lot, but we don’t have a cure for this, man. We have a lot of people who are getting sick. Even right here in Texas, it’s peaking again. It doesn’t feel safe.”</blockquote><p>Justise Winslow arrived in Memphis in February from the Miami Heat as part of the Andre Iguodala deal. He has yet to make his debut for the Grizzlies due to injury, and as it appears, he is not yet sure to play in Orlando.</p><p>Earlier, Winslow <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grizzlies-news-justise-winslow-rips-nba-nbpas-return-plan/" rel="noopener noreferrer">has raised concerns</a> about the NBA’s bubble plan. Needless to say, the former lottery pick is completely against the league’s plan to resume the season.</p><p>For what it’s worth, the Grizzlies were in eighth place in the West before games were suspended in March. Even though we are still in a global pandemic and the state of Florida has a number of COVID-19 cases, it looks like games are going to resume on July 30.</p><p>Orlando is experiencing a spike in the percentage of positive coronavirus tests in the weeks following the reopening of Florida’s economy. The state reported a record 3,207 new cases on Thursday.</p><p>The Grizzlies are among the 22 teams scheduled to partake in the “bubble” games. Memphis acquired Justise Winslow from the Miami Heat in the Andre Iguodala trade. The lefty wasn’t able to make his Grizzlies debut before the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-news-nba-season-suspended-after-rudy-gobert-tests-positive-for-coronavirus/">season was suspended</a> due to a nagging back injury.</p><p>Winslow, the 10th overall pick in the 2015 draft out of Duke, has career NBA <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/winslju01.html">averages</a> of 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Wade gave Gordon a score of 9 out of 10 after Gordon dunked over Boston Celtics giant Tacko Fall. Two other judges gave it a 9, while the other two gave it a 10.</p><p>Wade said he gave a score of nine because he felt Gordon didn’t clear Fall. They played together on the Heat for years.</p><p>However, their relationship wasn’t always good. When Wade signed with the Chicago Bulls in the summer of 2016, Winslow said there was some animosity between him and the legendary shooting guard.</p><p>When Wade played in Miami as a member of the Bulls, things got a little testy between the two. Winslow fouled Wade hard on a drive to the basket and Wade shoved Winslow in the back.</p><p>Things, though, became good again after Wade was traded to the Heat from the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2018. Winslow refers to Wade as his “big brother” all the time.</p><p>Because of Wade’s blunder in the Dunk Contest, basketball fans won’t be seeing Gordon dunk in the contest again. However, he became more of a role player, especially following the team’s acquisition of Jimmy Butler in the past summer.</p><blockquote>One Heat official, looking back at Winslow’s time in Miami, said Winslow wanted to be one of the main faces of the franchise – cast in a more prominent role – and that likely wasn’t going to be happen here with Jimmy Butler.One Heat person said Winslow didn’t attend quite as many voluntary offseason session last summer as the previous offseason. And there was some frustration internally about time missed with the mysterious back injury.</blockquote><p>Winslow only appeared in 11 games for the Heat this season because of injuries. The youngster averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/winslju01.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">11.3 points</a>, 6.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists while shooting 38.8 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line.</p><p>The Heat drafted Winslow with the 10th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Duke. He has career averages of 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists with the Heat.</p><p>Miami now has three elite defenders in Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo and Iguodala, while Justise Winslow gets a fresh start in Memphis.</p><p>The Heat are legit title contenders with Butler and Adebayo leading the way. Now with Iggy and Jae Crowder in the fold, Miami may just become the best defensive team in the NBA by season’s end.</p><p>Pat Riley is a Hall of Famer for a reason. In return, they received Iguodala, Jae Crowder, and Solomon Hill. The Heat also sent James Johnson to the Timberwolves, which, in turn, sent Gorgui Dieng to the Grizzlies.</p><p>Winslow spent five seasons in Miami. Through 241 career games with the Heat, Winslow put up nightly averages of <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/winslju01.html">9.0 points</a>, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.</p><p>Winslow’s tenure with Miami has been rather up-and-down, with the 6-foot-6 forward showing some flashes of brilliance here and there. Unfortunately, Winslow could not build on the career season he had with the Heat in 2018-19, where he thrived as a point-forward averaging <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/winslju01.html">12.6 points</a>, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.3 assists.</p><p>The 23-year old has been dealing with a nagging back injury for essentially the entire season and has only appeared in 11 games. Winslow’s back issues will likely keep him from making his Memphis debut anytime soon.</p><p>Nevertheless, the Grizzlies should give the former 10th overall pick a fresh start to showcase his potential. He also fits within the timeline of some of Memphis’ cornerstones in Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr.</p><p>Memphis is currently the no. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoff race, just 2.5 games ahead of the ninth seeded Portland Trail Blazers. Miami is 1-1 so far in the road stretch and Winslow last played on Wednesday against the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/indiana-pacers/">Indiana Pacers</a>. In that game, he posted just two points, two rebounds, and one assist in 15 minutes of play.</p><p>In the 11 games where Justise Winslow has appeared in this season, the fifth-year pro holds averages of <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/justise-winslow/b4c3097e/">11.3 points</a>, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. Winslow has also struggled with efficiency this season, shooting just 38.8 percent from the floor and 22.2 percent from deep.</p><p>The Heat selected Winslow with the 10th pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. Since then, Winslow has been a solid contributor to the Heat. However, he has played in more than 70 games just once in his five-year career.</p><p>In spite of Justise Winslow’s struggles with injuries and efficiency, the Heat have proven to be one of the biggest surprises of the NBA season. They are in third place in the Eastern Conference standings.</p><p>Winslow has appeared in 10 games for the Heat this season. The lefty is averaging <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/winslju01/gamelog/2020">12.4 points</a>, 7.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 39.4 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line.</p><p>The Heat are coming off a 20-point loss to the Orlando Magic. Miami All-Star small forward Jimmy Butler bashed the team for their poor defensive effort:</p><blockquote>“We got to guard,” Butler said, via the <a href="https://t.co/yATuLN6Qa8?amp=1">Miami Herald</a>. “I don’t think there’s any other way to say it. The fifth-year pro has played in just 10 of the team’s 31 games and has missed the last 10 games for the Heat. That streak will <a href="https://twitter.com/IraHeatBeat/status/1210998784454483973">reportedly</a> extend to 11 games as the 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward will sit out with a back bone bruise against the Philadelphia 76ers.</p><p>In the few games that he has played, Winslow has put up 12.4 points, 4.3 assists and a career-high 7.1 rebounds per game. The former Duke star has struggled shooting the ball making just 39.4 percent of his shots and 23.1 percent of his three-pointers.</p><p>Injuries aren’t a new occurrence for Winslow. The No. 10 pick of the 2015 NBA Draft has played in just 240 of a possible 359 regular season games in his career. When he’s on the court, Winslow is a high-impact player who changes the game with his defense and playmaking ability.</p><p>However, Winslow’s absence has allowed players such as Kendrick Nunn and Duncan Robinson to break out for Miami. As a whole, the Heat have been one of the biggest surprise teams this season. Behind offseason acquisition Jimmy Butler and third-year center Bam Adebayo, the Heat have compiled a 23-8 record, which is good for third place in the Eastern Conference.</p><p>When Winslow eventually returns, the potential of the Heat will get a boost. In the meantime, the Heat have won three games in a row and are playing some of the best basketball in the NBA. Saturday’s matchup against the 76ers will be Miami’s third game against the team. He’s now embracing his bench role and playing very well for head coach Erik Spoelstra.</p><p>In his last three games off the Heat’s bench, Winslow is averaging 9.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists.
