Towns played for the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2015 to 2023. </p><p>During that time, he helped them get the franchise back on track. In his final year, the Timberwolves advanced to the Western Conference Finals, where they lost to the Dallas Mavericks in a five-game series. </p><p>Last October, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/how-karl-anthony-towns-trade-helps-knicks-timberwolves-hornets" rel="noopener">Towns was traded to the Knicks</a>. He helped lead the Knicks to the Eastern Conference Finals. They were two wins away from making it to the NBA Finals, and some would say that they have some good things to build off from that run. That’s what the Knicks thought, too, which is why days after their postseason exit, they fired Tom Thibodeau.</p><p>The Knicks recently hired Mike Brown as their next head coach, and it will be a fresh start for the team. Brown has had success in the league, and he has come into a situation where the team is ready to win now.</p><p>For Towns, he will have to continue to play his game and make an impact on both sides of the ball. He is a two-time Coach of the Year, and was fired midseason by the Kings.</p><p>Brown figures to be the kind of coach who will <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/07/07/sports/mike-brown-brings-championship-pedigree-to-knicks-as-head-coachs-hire-made-official/" rel="noopener">hold his players accountable</a> on a nightly basis, and an attempt to cultivate a championship culture in New York.</p><p>“In general, I think that is part of my job,” Brown told the New York Post during his introductory news conference on Tuesday. “It’s one of my values, it’s accountability, but not just for players. Even for myself, I expect people to hold me accountable. But at the end of the day, it’s about relationships.”</p><p>Hart, Towns, and Bridges played pivotal roles in last season’s playoff run. They figure to be critical components of the Knicks’ future endeavors along with Brown and captain Jalen Brunson. He joined ClutchPoints in 2023.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>Recently, former NBA guard <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-gilbert-arenas-goes-off-rails-nsfw-karl-anthony-towns-wnba-rant">Gilbert Arenas came under fire</a> for his bizarre rant about New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony Towns, taking personal shots at the center, including making fun of his body among other things, in the aftermath of New York’s playoff defeat. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/dallas-mavericks/mavericks-news-irving-defends-anthony-towns-trolls">Kyrie Irving has since</a> come to Towns’ defense, using a recent Twitch stream to push back against some of the big man’s critics.</p><p>Now, Gilbert <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=119&amp;v=j0wA0HAAvfg&amp;feature=youtu.be" rel="noopener">is firing back</a> at Irving and others who blasted him for his remarks on his Gil’s Arena Show podcast.</p><p>“It’s not going too far, the reason it’s not going too far is we’re just picking and we’re making fun of them, right? We’re just trolling them,” said Arenas. “Like it’s no different than when Chris Bosh was doing his stuff. He actually played to the camera doing the dumb s—t. Is the camera looking at me. He’s start doing that. This one is like yes, we’re going out of our way to sit there and poke, but that’s all it is. It’s fun.”</p><p>Some of Arena’s expletive-filled remarks during his Towns rant certainly appeared to cross the threshold of innocent “trolling.”</p><h2><b>Tough times for the Knicks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Knicks-Karl-Anthony-Towns-2.jpg"><figcaption>Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Bizarre Karl-Anthony Towns criticisms aside, the Knicks have had a turbulent couple of weeks since their season came to an end vs the Indiana Pacers, first firing head coach Tom Thibodeau and having since been rejected by numerous NBA teams when inquiring about their coaches’ respective availabilities.</p><p>The Knicks have also been linked to numerous trade targets for this upcoming summer, including Kevin Durant of the Phoenix Suns and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, although the latter is looking more and more like a pipe dream at the current juncture.</p><p>It remains to be seen what direction the Knicks will choose to proceed in as it pertains to naming a new head coach and trying to maximize a roster that will soon have all of the majority of key pieces be on the wrong side of 30.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Since then, he had been pretty much quiet on social media, but he recently <a href="https://x.com/rickyrubio9/status/1930572000465969569?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1930572000465969569%7Ctwgr%5E54a381aab61aca65e8983e0d2f4f90bb71062685%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbasketnews.com%2Fnews-225691-ricky-rubio-hints-at-possible-return-this-isnt-a-goodbye.html" rel="noopener">shared a cryptic message</a> about his career.</p><p>“I took this year to reflect on my career and my life, and I’ve realized that if I’ve gotten to where I am today, it’s not because of the assists I’ve given, but because of the assists I’ve received,” Rubio wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This isn’t a goodbye, it’s a thank you to all the people who have helped me along the way.”</p><p>This message led many people to probably think that Rubio was done playing for good, and it caught Karl-Anthony Towns off guard because he <a href="https://www.instagram.com/stories/karltowns/3650040904010585433/" rel="noopener">had a message for him</a> on Instagram.</p><p>“Incredible journey [Ricky Rubio] Enjoy this next chapter,” Towns wrote on his story.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/timberwolves-news-karl-anthony-towns-emotionally-reflects-ricky-rubio-impact">Towns and Rubio played with each other</a> on the Minnesota Timberwolves back in the day.</p><h2><b>Is Ricky Rubio retiring?</b></h2><p>Though Rubio posted that initial message of thanking everybody in his career, he circled back and <a href="https://www.eurohoops.net/en/eurobasket/1834976/ricky-rubio-spain-eurobasket-euroleague-retirement-denied/" rel="noopener">gave clarity</a> on what he was trying to say.</p><p>“This is something I’d like to make clear. This isn’t a farewell,” Rubio said. “It’s simply a thank you. It comes from my year of reflection, and I wanted to do something that’s rarely done: to thank those who have been or are important to you. But it has no other message.</p><p>“I don’t know yet what will happen with my career. That should be the next thing to think about. This is something that came to mind now, and I want to convey it now that I’m back professionally, although I’m forced to stop due to health issues.”</p><p>Rubio returned to European basketball in 2024 for the first time since 2011, as he joined Barcelona in February to focus on his mental health. He parted ways with the club at the end of the season. During the 2023–24 season, he averaged 17 minutes, 4.7 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds.</p><p>With his clarifying message, it looks like Rubio is not sending his farewells and is leaving the door open.</p><p>“I might play again – why not? – or I might not, and that wouldn’t be a bad idea either. And after falling short in the 2025 Eastern Conference Finals, the dominoes have started to fall — beginning with <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-news-leon-rose-reason-firing-tom-thibodeau">head coach Tom Thibodeau, who was relieved of his duties</a> earlier this week (forcing New York to eat the remaining $30 million on his contract). The huge question now for the Knicks is whether or not they will look at Karl-Anthony Towns as a long-term piece still, or as a trade chip that could bring in someone who better fits the rest of the roster.</p><p>When the Knicks traded Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo for Towns, they gambled on the effectiveness of a roster with plenty of top-shelf talent at the cost of depth. And for the most part, it worked; New York dethroned the reigning champion Boston Celtics even with their <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-teammates-frustrated-karl-anthony-towns-defense-execution">defensive question marks with Towns at the forefront</a>, and they also went toe-to-toe with the eventual East champion Indiana Pacers.</p><p>Alas, there are plenty of defensive question marks surrounding this Knicks team; their defensive backbone of Towns and Jalen Brunson is flimsy, and this gave the Pacers so many soft spots to punch through in the ECF. A new head coach isn’t about to solve the foundational defensive issues that a roster led by Towns and Brunson will have.</p><p>Make no mistake about it, Towns is one of the best players in the association and the Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves have shown that they can win at a high level with him on the roster. But if the Knicks decide that a team with Towns at center only has so high of a ceiling, here are some trade destinations that sound perfect for the 2025 All-NBA center.</p><h2><b>4. Milwaukee Bucks</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/746722788-giannis-guarded-by-kat.jpg"><figcaption>Brad Penner-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Bucks are in dire straits moving forward; after Damian Lillard suffered a torn Achilles, the Bucks don’t have a reasonable pathway to contention in the coming years, especially when they don’t have much in the way of draft assets and blue-chip prospects. This is why many think that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/milwaukee-bucks/bucks-rumors-potential-lottery-pick-dad-drops-revelation-hint-giannis-trade">it’s a possibility that Giannis Antetokounmpo</a>, one of the most loyal superstars in the NBA, asks out eventually.</p><p>This would make Antetokounmpo a very appealing trade target for nearly every team in the NBA, although when a star like Antetokounmpo requests a trade, they usually give out a list of their preferred destinations, with the Bucks then working with those teams on potential frameworks of a trade. On the chance that Antetokounmpo names the Knicks as one of his desired landing spots, New York should be willing to dangle everyone not named Jalen Brunson for him. And yes, that includes Towns.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/new-york-knicks/knicks-rumors-bill-simmons-floats-blockbuster-giannis-antetokounmpo-3-team-trade">Towns alone won’t get the deal done</a>; someone like Mikal Bridges or OG Anunoby will also have to go to the Bucks, with someone like Kyle Kuzma heading to the Knicks as well. This is the only realistic trade between two teams, as New York won’t have the draft capital to entice the Bucks further considering what they paid for Bridges.</p><p>Alas, this does not seem to be a good destination for Towns personally. It’s hard to imagine him wanting to go back to a rebuilding situation after getting a taste of what it’s like to compete deep in the playoffs over the past two seasons.</p><h2><b>3. </b><b>Phoenix Suns</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Knicks-Karl-Anthony-Towns-vs.-Suns-trying-to-block-Devin-Booker.jpg"><figcaption>Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Suns have plenty of roster issues of their own to sort through. They are stuck with the Bradley Beal contract, and it looks very likely that they will trade Kevin Durant away just to recoup some assets. But one hypothetical trade that has been making the rounds in recent days is a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/nba-rumors-suns-kevin-durant-trade-karl-anthony-towns">potential swap between the Suns and Knicks</a> involving Durant and Towns.</p><p>Durant is no longer a spring chicken (he’ll be 37 years old prior to the start of the 2025-26 season), but he would free up the starting center spot on the Knicks for Mitchell Robinson, reinforcing the team defensively as a result. He may no longer be as agile as he once was, but he’s not the defensive weak spot Towns can be at times.</p><p>For the Suns, if they can swap Durant for Towns, it’s a no-brainer. Towns will just be entering his age-30 season, and again, he is coming off an All-NBA season after averaging 24.4 points and 12.8 rebounds per contest on 53/42/83 shooting from the field. Towns and Devin Booker, the Suns’ franchise player, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/warriors-news-dangelo-russell-says-he-karl-anthony-towns-devin-booker-will-be-same-team-one-day">are also very good friends</a>, and this at least gives Phoenix an exciting product to put out there next season all while patching up their huge hole at center.</p><p>This doesn’t rank higher for Towns in terms of appealing trade destinations due to the fact that he’s going from a contending team in the Knicks (and the Timberwolves before that) to a middling Western Conference team in the Suns.</p><h2>2. San Antonio Spurs</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/Wembanyama-vs-the-Knicks.jpg"><figcaption>Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>The Spurs have preferred to build their next contending team the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/2025-nba-mock-draft-2-0-could-spurs-trade-dylan-harper-nets">slow and steady way</a>. Even after drafting Victor Wembanyama, they got two high lottery picks and are well-positioned to surround Wembanyama with the exact kind of core that he needs to sustainably contend in the unforgiving Western Conference.</p><p>But in terms of sheer fit, Towns slots in quite well into the Spurs’ starting five. His best defensive home is at power forward, and with Wembanyama, the best rim protector in the NBA at the moment, his weaknesses on that end of the floor <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/minnesota-timberwolves/karl-anthony-towns-paying-off-timberwolves-massive-bet-on-rudy-gobert">will be covered</a> in the best way possible.</p><p>Someone like Devin Vassell would have to go to the Knicks in a Towns trade, while Keldon Johnson and Jeremy Sochan may also have to be included. That could prove to be far too rich of a price for a Spurs team that’s not rushing in any way to compete for a title. But it’s hard to argue against the idea that a core four of De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, Towns, and Wembanyama would be incredible and could earn them 50 wins in the West as soon as next season, health permitting.</p><p>Alas, both teams will be hesitant in the end to strike any kind of agreement. Vassell is not someone the Knicks will go out of their way to target, as he stands at just 6’5″ and will force Anunoby to suit up at the four. That may not be a tenable situation. Johnson has efficiency problems, while Sochan, as helpful of a hustle and rebounding guy he is at the moment, is someone defenses will ignore come playoff time. New York already has someone like Sochan on the roster in Josh Hart anyway.</p><h2>1. Dallas Mavericks</h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Mavericks-center-Anthony-Davis.jpg"><figcaption>Petre Thomas-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Unlike the first two teams, this Mavericks team can end up being really good as soon as next season. Their guard play is a bit rough, with Kyrie Irving on the mend due to a torn ACL, but their frontcourt is about to be one of the deepest in the NBA. Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, PJ Washington and, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/nba-stories/nba-rumors-espn-suns-mavericks-trade-swap-cooper-flagg-pick-devin-booker">presumably, Cooper Flagg</a> will be such an incredible group that they need just serviceable guard play to be a force to be reckoned with next season.</p><p>But with the Mavericks looking to win back their fanbase quickly, Towns would be such an incredible addition and a good fit alongside Davis, preparing themselves for another championship push once Irving returns to full health. If there’s anything Towns needs to thrive without it coming at the cost of defense, it’s a rim protector alongside him, and Davis is exactly that.</p><p>The Knicks have <a href="https://www.spotrac.com/nba/new-york-knicks/yearly" rel="noopener">also learned</a> this postseason that depth matters, so why not target a package built around Dereck Lively II, Klay Thompson, Naji Marshall, and PJ Washington? Those are four battle-tested players who are seamless fits alongside the likes of Brunson, Bridges, and Anunoby.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

However, the real heavy lifting remains to be done on <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/phoenix-suns/suns-rumors-insider-declares-phoenix-100-done-with-bradley-beal">the Suns’ roster</a>, with Kevin Durant widely expected to be moved this summer.</p><p>Durant is sure to have plenty of suitors on the trade market over the coming months, including possibly the New York Knicks, who recently saw their season come to an end with an Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Indiana Pacers and have since fired head coach Tom Thibodeau.</p><p>In fact, the good folks in Las Vegas seem to have taken these rumors seriously, as the Suns <a href="https://x.com/cpbetting/status/1930382750105645556?s=46&amp;t=DSzXjOsCkjGGL6Uu_i6CUQ" rel="noopener">are now favored</a> to be Knicks big man Karl-Anthony Towns’ next team if it’s not New York with +400 odds, per BetOnline Sportsbook.</p><p>A Towns to the Suns move would almost assuredly mean that Durant is on his way to the Big Apple for the second time in his career after previously suiting up for the Brooklyn Nets.</p><h2><b>An interesting idea for the Suns</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Karl-Anthony-Towns-of-the-New-York-Knicks-2.jpg"><figcaption>Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Trading Durant for a package centered around Karl-Anthony Towns would allow the Suns to pair Towns up with his former teammate at Kentucky, Devin Booker. That duo helped put together a dominant season of college basketball for the Wildcats ten years ago before both players were selected in the NBA Draft lottery the ensuing summer.</p><p>It’s been made clear over the last two-plus years that the Durant and Booker partnership has not materialized the way Mat Ishbia and company had hoped it would, and it’s possible that giving Booker a more traditional big man like Towns would help make the Suns’ offensive attack more versatile.</p><p>At this point, it’s unclear exactly what Durant’s value on the trade market will be due to his age and rising injury concerns. It’s also worth noting that Durant hasn’t been past the second round of the playoffs since he was with the Golden State Warriors in 2019, calling into question just how important of a piece to winning he currently is.</p><p>However, if the Knicks were to swing a trade for the future Hall of Famer, Towns would almost assuredly be on his way to the valley.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Since then, there have been rumors that the franchise could trade center Karl-Anthony Towns after already firing head coach Tom Thibodeau.</p><p>With Towns’ future hanging in the balance, he fell victim to a wild NSFW rant from Gilbert Arenas, who compared the star center to WNBA players.</p><p>During the latest episode of the “Gil’s Arena Show,” the former NBA player went off on Karl-Anthony Towns’ <a href="https://x.com/ClutchPoints/status/1930289014239527149" rel="noopener">inability to play defense</a>. While going on his rant, Arenas claimed that the Knicks’ star doesn’t have the right body to play defense in the NBA. Arenas went as far as to claim that Towns is “built like a girl.”</p><p>“Listen, can you just put Karl-Anthony Towns out there so we can just be educated on KAT himself. It’s him; it’s his physical makeup. Long legs, short torso, big a** feet. There’s nothing he can do; he’s built like a whole f****** b****. He’s built like a female. Am I saying something wrong? The Knicks’ star didn’t have an answer but did admit his fouling habits are a problem that needs to be addressed.</p><p>Despite that, Towns played a major role in helping the Knicks make it to the Eastern Conference Finals. He proved to be a strong No. 2 option behind point guard Jalen Brunson. Karl-Anthony Towns averaged 21.4 points and 11.6 rebounds per game in the playoffs. He also shot 48.8% from the field and was 35.1% from three-point range.</p><p>But his defensive skills are still a question mark, and that’s what Gilbert Arenas was going off about. The former point guard toned it down a tad to further explain what he meant when discussing Karl-Anthony Towns’ body.</p><p>“He’s built bad; he’s not built to play. He can’t play pick and roll defense; he doesn’t have the body to do it. He’s built bad; he’s not athletic; he can’t move left to right; he can’t move up and down; he can’t jump; he just has a bad build.
