This gives San Antonio comfort at the center position, providing Wembanyama plenty of assistance.</p><p>Another great sign is that Wembanyama will be ready to start next season. They’re continuing a shift – and perhaps sending a signal to the NBA during free agency – toward rounding out a roster that intends to compete.</p><p>Obvious as that may seem, the moves the Spurs have made over the previous two seasons focused on developing youth. This off-season signals a different path.</p><h2>Youth has dominated the Spurs roster last several years</h2><p>The Spurs dealt Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, as well as the least favorable 2026 second-round pick of Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Philadelphia, to acquire Olynyk. Along with Jeremy Sochan, both Branham and Wesley were all first-round picks of the Silver and Black in 2022. While Branham has contributed slightly more than Wesley since then, neither has made his way into the Spurs rotation consistently. Through their first three seasons in the NBA, the organization worked to develop their games, the last <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-victor-wembanyama-immediate-reaction-to-winning-rookie-of-the-year">two years with Victor Wembanyama</a> at the center of the franchise.</p><p>Since drafting Wemby in 2023, the Spurs have featured rosters that have ranked among the youngest and second-youngest in the NBA. Players like Tre Jones, Sidy Cissoko, Dominick Barlow, Charles Bassey, Harrison Ingram, and Riley Minix, among others, have been added – some through two-way contracts – to fill out the fringes of the depth.</p><p>When the Spurs added veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes last summer, they were the only players older than 25 on the team at the start of the season.</p><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/unnamed-2_532d4b.jpg"><figcaption>Jerome Miron-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><h2>What the Spurs are getting in Kelly Olynyk</h2><p>Since the start of last season, GM Brian Wright and company have traded for 27-year-old De’Aaron Fox. They started this off-season by adding 29-year-old center Luke Kornet. Then comes the deal with the Washington Wizards for the 34-year-old Olynyk. Already part of a previous trade this offseason, the veteran big man didn’t play for Washington, but instead suited up for the New Orleans Pelicans last season.</p><p>At 6-foot-11, 240 pounds, Olynyk appeared in 44 games last season with the Toronto Raptors and Pelicans. He averaged <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/olynyke01.html" rel="noopener">8.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 20.2 minutes</a> while shooting 50% from the floor and 41.8% from 3-point range. The 12-year veteran holds career averages of 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.5 assists across 800 games with the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, and Utah Jazz as well. The Dallas Mavericks initially selected Olynyk with the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft following three seasons at Gonzaga.</p><p>The Spurs struggled to shoot around Wembanyama last season. For his career, Olynyk has shot 48.6% from the field, 37.1% from beyond the arc, and 79.6% from the foul line.</p><p>The Toronto native represented Team Canada on the international stage, helping secure the country’s first FIBA World Cup medal with a bronze at the 2023 tournament to go along with a bronze medal in the 2015 FIBA AmeriCup.</p><p>Along with Barnes, Fox, and Kornet, Olynyk also brings the Spurs postseason experience. They rerouted the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/spurs-news-san-antonio-adds-victor-wembanyama-backup-in-trade-with-wizards">34-year-old to the San Antonio Spurs</a> on Tuesday in a move that builds upon their already-flexible financial situation.</p><p>The full trade details are below:</p><p><b>Wizards get:</b></p><p>G Malaki Branham</p><p>G Blake Wesley</p><p>2026 second-round pick (least favorable of PHI, DAL, OKC)</p><p><b>Spurs get:</b></p><p>C Kelly Olynyk</p><p>This deal gives Washington <a href="https://x.com/MikeAScotto/status/1942738138922619146" rel="noopener">more salary cap room</a>, via HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.</p><p>“By trading Kelly Olynyk to the Spurs, the Washington Wizards increased their tax and apron buffer to take on more salary throughout the summer and season,” he reported. “Washington also created a $13.5 million TPE [traded player exception]. Olynyk joins a competitive Spurs team while in a contract year ($13.45 million).”</p><p>TPEs are created when a team trades a player and receives less incoming salary than what it sent out. That’s what happened here, as Olynyk’s $13.45 million salary next season is more than Branham’s ($4.96 million) and Wesley’s ($4.73 million) combined. Now, the Wizards can use that TPE to take back $13.5 million in salary without adding to their cap or luxury tax.</p><p>That will come in handy later, when they inevitably take on more unwanted money in exchange for draft capital and/or young players. Other than the 7-foot Alex Sarr, they have nobody over 6-foot-9-inches. However, they could bring back the 7-foot Tristan Vukcevic, who’s a restricted free agent.</p><p>Trading/buying out Smart’s expiring $21 million salary and trading Kispert could also be in the cards, as both players are expendable. Regardless, Washington has multiple ways to trim the roster before the season begins in October. It wouldn’t be tragic for the Wizards if neither player pans out, as they’re both on expiring deals before hitting restricted free agency. Assuming that it gets back its pick from the Knicks after finishing near the bottom of the standings, it will have at least two first-rounders and four second-rounders to either draft players with or trade, if it doesn’t deal those picks over the next year.</p><p>Furthermore, Wizards fans now won’t have to watch Olynyk play for their team after he scored 26 points on them with the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the 2017 Eastern Conference Semifinals, which the Celtics won 115-105. Washington hasn’t won a playoff series since then, and the 6-foot-11-inch, 240-pounder’s presence in its lineup would be a constant reminder of that, despite its need at center.</p><p>The Wizards were projected to clear about $100 million in cap space next summer before this trade, and now they add this year’s TPE to that financial bounty. In an era where most contenders are under cap stress, Washington will be in a position to outbid other squads for free agents and add expensive contracts through trades as it continues to draft young talent. We get somebody who’s been a critical part of being a glue guy on a championship team. All the smoke and mirrors around Naji Marshall and Jonas Valanciunas being expiring contracts on the move were misguided. Executive Vice President David Griffin did not build out this roster to wash the progress away as soon as the locker room was fully healthy. The franchise was never going to acquire a piece that could fill what Valanciunas does for this team.</p><p>The newly <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/pelicans-jonas-valanciunas-passes-test-against-stout-pacers-frontcourt">recertified as playoff-approved Valanciunas</a> and the Pelicans have a guidepost for future contract negotiations. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/raptors-news-toronto-kelly-olynyk-contract-extension" rel="noopener">Toronto Raptors and Kelly Olynyk</a> have come to terms on a two-year, $26.25 million contract extension. Olynyk is a year older but a bit more of a mobile perimeter threat than Valanciunas, who is far more dominant in rebounding and patrolling the paint.</p><p>Valanciunas has never been one to press the issue in free agency. The 31-year-old has preferred the security of having a multi-year deal in place and getting to have a big say in locker room chemistry. The Lithuanian loves New Orleans by all accounts, and it’s easy to see why both sides would be agreeable to a new deal. Willie Green explained why <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIU4bGqp2BQ">after the last practice</a> before the Pelicans flew out to Toronto:</p><p>“(Valanciunas) has been fantastic,” Green boasted. “Everything that we are asking him to do, to try and have more spacing, sacrificing because Zion (Williamson) is coming down the lane, and he’s still making himself available offensively. Defensively he’s sound. And it’s because of our communication. He and I, the rest of the coaches, his teammates. We’re constantly talking about game-to-game and what’s the plan. JV has been great this season.”</p><p>A three-year deal with the third season partially guaranteed for around Olynyk’s $26-28 million would be a team-friendly value. The contract would be moveable in a trade if needed, but also Jonas Valanciunas would feel like a part of the future even if the Pelicans bring in a younger prospect to play big minutes as the team’s nominal center.</p><p>Unlike the Kira Lewis Jr. transaction, finances would not be the first and final straw to consider in that Valanciunas scenario.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

For the most part, with a few exceptions, Olynyk has spent the majority of his career coming off the bench. It’s a role where he’s found success. He should also be able to help the Raptors’ younger players in their progression moving forward.</p><p>Olynyk will be an important player in Toronto over the next couple of years.</p><h2><b>Raptors’ outlook amid forgettable 2023-24 season</b></h2><p>Toronto currently holds a 23-38 record this season. The Raptors have consistently underperformed. As a result, key players such as Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby were moved prior to the NBA trade deadline.</p><p>Toronto is rebuilding. They are set to rely on younger players and impactful veterans who can utilize their experience and help amid the rebuild.</p><p>The Raptors would obviously love to bounce back in 2024-25, but it may take a few years for the team to emerge as a contender once again. Their performance in the draft, free agency, and trades will play a pivotal role in determining how long the rebuild lasts. Simply being able to develop players will also be of the utmost importance.</p><p>It will be intriguing to see how Kelly Olynyk fits into their plans moving forward.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

One of the more <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/jazz-news-kelly-olynyk-raptors-trade-deadline-deal" rel="noopener">surprising deals</a> of the morning saw the Toronto Raptors pick up Kelly Olynyk and Ochai Agabji from the Utah Jazz in exchange for Otto Porter Jr., Kira Lewis Jr., and a 2024 first-round pick.</p><p>While the Jazz were known to be <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-warriors-linked-to-kelly-olynyk-as-trade-deadline-approaches" rel="noopener">exploring deals</a> for Olynyk, the fact that the Raptors were the ones that managed to pick him up was a bit surprising. Either way, with the deal now in the books, let’s take a closer look at the return for both teams, and hand out some final grades to each squad as well.</p><h2><b>Raptors get: C Kelly Olynyk, G Ochai Agabji</b></h2><h2><b>Jazz Get: F Otto Porter Jr., G Kira Lewis Jr., 2024 1st-round pick</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Jazz_news_Utah_sends_Kelly_Olynyk_to_Raptors_in_4-player_trade_deadline_deal.webp"></figure><p>Olynyk is the biggest piece of this deal, so it’s best to look at the Raptors return first here. Viewed as one of the top big man trade targets at the deadline, Olynyk adds spacing from the center position when he’s on the floor, while also playing solid interior defense as well. Olynyk’s shooting has been lights out this season (8.1 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 4.4 APG, 56.2 FG%, 42.9 3P%), so it’s not surprising that he had a lot of suitors.</p><p>When you consider that Olynyk’s minutes had been cut pretty significantly from last season, it made sense for Utah to get rid of him. With bigger minutes, Olynyk should be able to thrive as a stretch big whose playmaking has also continued to improve as he’s gotten older. On a Raptors team that has been selling away some big pieces, there’s no question Olynyk will have minutes on his new team.</p><p>In addition to Olynyk, Toronto landed Agbaji, who was taken with the 14th overall pick of the 2022 NBA Draft. Agbaji has flashed his potential early on in his career, but his numbers are down from last season (5.4 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 0.9 APG, 42.6 FG%), and the Jazz apparently decided it was time to cut ties with him.</p><p>It’s not that Olynyk or Agbaji are bad players, but the trade as a whole for Toronto is confusing. They have already gotten rid of Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby this year, so they are unquestionably selling. And yet, they decided to pick up Olynyk, one of the top big man trade targets, in a move that a buyer would typically make.</p><p>Landing Agbaji and giving him minutes is a good idea, but there’s no doubt this is a bit of a head-scratching move by the Raptors. Maybe they will make some more deals before the deadline to make this clearer, but as of right now, it’s tough to see how this trade actually makes their team better moving forward.</p><p><b>Final Grade: C+</b></p><p>The Jazz have been intent on selling off some of their spare parts to aid their rebuilding-on-the-fly efforts, and after getting an iffy return for Simone Fontecchio on Wednesday, they did better here with Olynyk. Giving up on Agbaji felt a bit premature, but his path to minutes was a bit too crowded, so it’s not the end of the world to send him to Toronto with Olynyk.</p><p>The return for Utah is going to be highlighted by the first-round pick they got, as that adds to what is becoming an increasingly impressive haul of picks. Chances are it’s not going to be an outrageously high pick, but it could be used in another move to help the Jazz bring more talent to Utah.</p><p>Porter has only played in 15 games this season, and while his numbers aren’t impressive by any stretch of the imagination (2.6 PPG, 1.9 APG, 1.5 RPG, 42.4 FG%), he’s a strong two-way wing who has championship experience after winning the 2022 NBA Finals with the Golden State Warriors. Porter could get moved again before the deadline, but if he stays put, he could be a helpful piece of Utah’s rotation.</p><p>Lewis, who was the 13th overall pick of the 2020 NBA Draft, hasn’t really panned out so far in his career, and his addition in this deal doesn’t really move the needle. He’s still just 22 years old, so the potential is still there, but there’s no doubt he’s a downgrade from Agbaji, who just sent away to Toronto.</p><p>It’s not a mind-boggling trade, but it’s tough to look at this deal and not view the Jazz as the winner. Whereas the Raptors are seemingly running in circles trying to figure out what to do, the Jazz are continuing to build for the future, while also piecing together a decent team on the court currently. This move isn’t going to win them a title, but it’s a shrewd piece of business that falls in line with their deadline day strategy, which is something that the Raptors cannot necessarily say they did on the other end of this deal.</p><p><b>Final Grade: </b><b>B</b></p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Be sure to follow him on Twitter @BrettSiegelNBA.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Utah Jazz are <a href="https://x.com/wojespn/status/1755615780115267771?s=20" rel="noopener">finalizing a trade</a> that would send Kelly Olynyk and former first-round pick Ochai Agbaji to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Kira Lewis Jr., Otto Porter Jr., and a 2024 first-round pick, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>Olynyk, who was <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-trade-deadline-intel-rumors-jazz-knicks-76ers-make-moves" rel="noopener">widely expected</a> to be dealt ahead of the NBA trade deadline, is in the final year of his contract and set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer. Known for his abilities to spread the floor as a stretch big, Olynyk now heads to a Raptors team that is currently re-tooling in hopes of once again finding playoff success.</p><p>In a total of 50 games with the Jazz this season, Olynyk has averaged 8.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game while shooting 42.9 percent from three-point range. He will be an immediate frontcourt upgrade for the Raptors, alongside starting center Jakob Poeltl.</p><p>Agbaji now gets a fresh start with a team that values youthful wing. After falling out of Utah’s rotation this season, it became clear that Agbaji’s time with the franchise that drafted him 14th overall in 2022 was coming to an end.</p><p>The Jazz, who were <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-kelly-olynyk-trade-destinations-if-jazz-move-him" rel="noopener">receiving a lot of interest</a> on the trade market for Olynyk, elected to move him to a team not in an immediate position to contend for a playoff spot. In return, Utah gets two players, Lewis and Porter, both of whom do not seem to check off any boxes for what the Jazz need. Porter could very much be re-routed to a new team before the trade deadline.</p><p>The first-round pick the Jazz receive from the Raptors is the least favorable of the Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, and Jazz first-round picks in 2024. After all, the expectation as long as Stephen Curry is playing at a high level is for them to compete for a championship, much less a playoff spot. Alas, to this point, the Warriors have stood pat, and it’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-steve-kerr-drops-truth-bomb-on-dubs-rumored-trade-deadline-desperation" rel="noopener">looking rather unlikely</a> that they pull off a blockbuster trade that drastically affects their title odds this season.</p><p>But this doesn’t mean that the Warriors aren’t looking into upgrading the roster, particularly the frontcourt. As of late, they have relied heavily on Draymond Green to hold the fort at center; while Green can do a job at that position, the lack of size on the interior remains a concern for them. Thus, it’s not too big of a surprise to hear that the Warriors are <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1755480081575583762" rel="noopener">linked to versatile big man</a> Kelly Olynyk, who, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, has been linked to a potential move to the Dubs.</p><p>“Here’s an interesting name for Golden State. There are a number of teams pursuing Kelly Olynyk with the Utah Jazz. He’d be a perfect fit for Golden State. Only two weeks are left for teams to add or subtract to their roster before the offseason to either make a playoff push or wave the white flag. The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/best-jordan-clarkson-trade-destinations-if-jazz-move-him-at-deadline" rel="noopener">Utah Jazz are in a position</a> to choose one or the other. It may seem like they’re going with the latter. They were in a similar boat they are now in 2023 (24-25; tied for ninth in the West) and opted to prioritize the long view by trading away veterans like Mike Conley, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Malik Beasley. They might do the same this year with players like Kelly Olynyk and Jordan Clarkson.</p><p>Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype <a href="https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-trade-deadline-rumors-knicks-clippers-jazz-rockets-hawks-nets-wizards/">has reported</a> that Kelly Olynyk has ‘drawn interest from various teams across the league’ and that Olynyk is the most likely Jazz player to get dealt at the trade deadline. It would make sense as to why; Olynyk is one of the better shooting big men in the league with a ton of playoff experience under his belt. He would help a ton of teams around the NBA. A couple really stand out as options for Olynyk.</p><h2><b>Oklahoma City Thunder</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/thunder-news-chet-holmgren-shouts-out-shai-gilgeous-alexanders-leadership-amid-okcs-breakout-campaign_2.webp"></figure><p>There may not be a team that could use Kelly Olynyk more <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/thunder-news-shai-gilgeous-alexander-shares-eye-opening-okc-claim-after-taming-nuggets" rel="noopener">than the Oklahoma City Thunder</a>. As great as Chet Holmgren is, the Thunder don’t have many options at center outside of him. Jaylin Williams is a fine backup center but he has been in and out of the Thunder’s rotation this season. He is a solid passer and shooter from the center spot (career 38.2% shooter from deep and a +2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio) and a charge-taking maestro, but the Thunder could stand to improve at that position and get someone who can not only give Holmgren a breather but also play alongside him.</p><p>Kelly Olynyk is that guy. Olynyk is a career 37% shooter from deep but has shot 39.4% and 42.5% from distance over the past two seasons. He’d also fit in like a glove with this Oklahoma City roster. He doesn’t need the ball but his playmaking and ability to stretch the floor would accentuate the skills of the Thunder’s stars in Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, and Chet Holmgren.</p><p>Most importantly, Olynyk has plenty of playoff experience. Everyone knows they can trust Olynyk with 20 minutes in a postseason environment. The Thunder are short on that experience. Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort, and Davis Bertans are the only players on Oklahoma City’s roster that even have playoff experience.</p><p>That can be overblown a bit; no one should expect Williams or Holmgren to get overwhelmed in that setting. But having another veteran who can calm these young players down in certain situations is very valuable. Olynyk can do that and plays a position of need. He’d be a great addition for Oklahoma City.</p><h2><b>Denver Nuggets</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/nuggets-news-nikola-jokic-reacts-to-offensive-dominance-by-denvers-starters-vs-pacers.webp"></figure><p>How the Nuggets fare when Nikola Jokic is on the bench has been a talking point for years. Head coach Michael Malone solved that problem by deploying a Jeff Green and Aaron Gordon frontcourt in the postseason last year en route to their title. But Green is gone and Gordon is too vital to rely on him to be both their starting frontcourt mate next to Jokic and their backup center.</p><p>Olynyk can fill that void and allow the Nuggets to play a similar style with him at center while Jokic gets his rest. His shooting ability complements Gordon (or Peyton Watson if Gordon is getting a breather) and Jamal Murray very well. Not only could Olynyk play a legit role for this Nuggets team, but if Denver, the champions a year ago, were to acquire him, they’d bolster their chances of repeating by keeping away from another contender, like the aforementioned Thunder. Following their Christmas Day victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics are now 23-6 on the season, dominating virtually every single team they have faced. Although they have the best starting group in the NBA, Boston’s front office, led by former head coach Brad Stevens, is still looking to make moves in order to firmly lock in this team’s chances of winning a title. That is why Utah Jazz big man Kelly Olynyk is now on his former team’s radar.</p><p>Olynyk, who spent the first four seasons of his career in Boston, has bounced around between a lot of teams through the years. From the Miami Heat to the Houston Rockets to the Detroit Pistons to now being with the Jazz, the 32-year-old veteran is once again a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-celtics-interested-in-kelly-olynyk-reunion-via-jazz-trade" rel="noopener">reliable target</a> for contending teams ahead of February’s trade deadline.</p><p>The Celtics, who have made it known they are evaluating all options to add secondary depth this season, are <a href="https://marcstein.substack.com/p/the-latest-nba-trade-chatter-and" rel="noopener">monitorin</a>g Olynyk’s status with the Jazz. Marc Stein was the first to report on these Olynyk rumors, claiming he is one of several veterans in Utah who could be moved ahead of this season’s deadline.</p><p>Obviously, if the Jazz are to be sellers at the trade deadline, it would also make a whole lot of sense for the Celtics to pursue an experienced guard who is accustomed to being in a sixth man role such as Jordan Clarkson. While he has started for the Jazz this season, Clarkson won the 2020-21 Sixth Man of the Year award and would be the scoring weapon Boston has been missing on their bench. However, the Celtics do not have a lot of flexibility when it comes to finding more talent to add to their roster. Not to mention, Clarkson’s $23.4 million contract this season would be too much to bare, while Olynyk is making just $12.2 million.</p><p>Currently owning one of the league’s highest payrolls, the Celtics have already gone all-in by trading for Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis this past offseason. Nonetheless, Stevens has maintained an aggressive mindset, putting the rest of the league on notice that money will not stand in the way of the Celtics pursuing more championship-caliber players such as Olynyk.</p><p>Of course, there are still obstacles that the Celtics would need to tackle in order to have a chance at pursuing Olynyk. Specifically, they would need to part ways with a key member of their bench.</p><h2><b>How Celtics can pursue Kelly Olynyk</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/How_Celtics__Kelly_Olynyk_interest_impacts_NBA_trade_deadline_-_3.webp"></figure><p>Kelly Olynyk’s $12.2 million contract this season is an expiring one. From the Celtics’ point of view, he is the ideal type of trade target this season due to the team not having to worry about any long-term contractual stress. As things stand right now, Boston is going to be paying Jaylen Brown close to $300 million through the 2028-29 season and Jayson Tatum is next in line to receive a massive extension.</p><p>Basically, the Celtics can only add smaller, one-year contract to their roster unless they want to limit their ability to retain Tatum and have a sustainable tax bill. Pursuing a player like Jordan Clarkson is not really reasonable for the reasons outlined above. However, Olynyk’s contract is significantly less than Clarkson’s and Boston does have a path to reacquiring the versatile big man.</p><p>In order to pursue Olynyk in a trade, the Celtics would need to do their best to match his $12.2 million incoming salary. A package revolving around Payton Pritchard, Luke Kornet, Oshae Brissett, another small contract, and draft picks technically works and can make the transaction successful, but why would the Jazz do this?</p><p>Kornet, Brissett, and any other minimum contract player would be of no use to Utah. Pritchard does draw some intrigue, though, especially since Danny Ainge was the one who drafted him and now has his fingerprints all over the Jazz front office. From the Celtics’ point of view, giving up three or four players, plus draft assets, for an extra big man on the bench does not bring many advantages. This move would immediately force the Celtics to spend even more money by adding minimum contract players for the rest of the year.</p><p>While Pritchard may be a player the Jazz have some interest in, this scenario is nothing more than something you would see in NBA 2K.</p><p>The real scenario the Celtics face when evaluating options on how to pursue Olynyk is one that involves Al Horford. His $10 million contract this season is really the only way the Celtics could facilitate this contract with the Jazz. Trading Horford and one of their players on a minimum contract works for Boston from a financial perspective, yet the Jazz would likely want more value since Horford still has $9.5 million on his deal for next season.</p><p>The logistics from here become nothing but hypotheticals, as there is no telling as to if the Jazz would want someone like Pritchard, two second-round picks, or a first-round pick in addition to Horford for Olynyk. There is also the possibility that another team could be involved to facilitate the deal and take on Horford’s contract.</p><p>No matter what would occur, the Celtics do not have many options when it comes to pursue Olynyk from the Jazz. Almost every scenario that makes sense would involve dumping Horford, a move that could wind up throwing off the chemistry of this team given the veteran’s leadership behind the scenes. Plus, Horford is still effective on the court, especially when it comes to defending the likes of Joel Embiid.</p><h2><b>Kelly Olynyk’s fit with Celtics</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/How_Celtics__Kelly_Olynyk_interest_impacts_NBA_trade_deadline_-_2.webp"></figure><p>If the Celtics were to add Olynyk to their rotation right now without moving Horford, they would have virtually everything needed to win their 18th championship. Holiday and Derrick White would run the backcourt, Tatum and Brown would give Boston everything they need scoring wise on the wing, and the frontcourt would have Porzingis, Horford, and Olynyk as options who can play inside and out.</p><p>Bringing in Olynyk to replace Horford is not the worst idea in the world, especially given the Jazz big man is a better long-range shooter than Horford. Whereas Olynyk is a better shooter, Horford is a better rebounder and defender.</p><p>This is basically a balancing scale and the Celtics would have to make a decision on which attributes better suit them on their championship journey. There’s no denying that Olynyk would make them a better team, but would he do so at the cost of Horford?</p><p>The Celtics have been the best team in the NBA to this point in the season, which has led many to believe that the pursuit of players on eight-digit contracts just isn’t feasible. Making trades ahead of the deadline however is not out of the realm of possibilities for Boston.</p><p>Stevens and this front office still have a $6.2 million player exception that can be utilized this season. It is much more likely that the Celtics will consider players who fit in this salary range rather than someone like Olynyk that would require the team giving up at least one of their key contributors.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

He's also covered Villanova men's basketball and Big East basketball, building a strong reputation in the northeast.</address><h3 class="op-kicker">NBA</h3><figure class="op-ad"></figure></header><p>The Boston Celtics have one of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-derrick-white-accomplishes-insane-feat-no-guard-ever-has-clippers-win" rel="noopener">best starting lineups</a> in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean they’re standing still ahead of the trade deadline on February 8.</p><p>Utah Jazz forward Kelly Olynyk, who spent the first four seasons of his career in Boston, is reportedly <a href="https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/274081/Boston-Celtics-Have-Trade-Interest-In-Kelly-Olynyk" rel="noopener">being monitored by</a> the Celtics, per NBA insider Marc Stein. The Jazz are currently 12-18 and far from competing for a title, so it wouldn’t be a shock if they were sellers at the deadline.</p><p>In addition, former Celtics <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/celtics-news-danny-ainge-shocking-jimmy-butler-trade-revelation" rel="noopener">general manager Danny Ainge</a> is now the CEO of basketball operations for Utah. His connections with Olynyk and Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens are apparent, making a potential swap more likely given their strong business relationship.</p><p>But before the C’s get their hopes up, a few roadblocks stand in the way of a deal. Olynyk is earning $12.2 million this year, which would be difficult for Boston to match without sending away a crucial player. The Celtics are currently 22-6 and in first place in the Eastern Conference, and while they always want to improve, it might not be worth a significant price.</p><p>Stein suggested that the C’s could combine the salaries of multiple players on minimum contracts to acquire Olynyk, yet there’s no telling if Utah would go for that smaller value.</p><p>During his four seasons with Boston, Kelly Olynyk averaged a solid 9.5 points in 20.7 minutes per game. He has an outside shot, can rebound, and is even somewhat of a playoff performer. In Game 7 of the second round of the 2017 playoffs, Olynyk torched the Washington Wizards with 26 points to capture a 115-105 victory. In the fourth quarter of that series-clinching win, he had 14 points alone.</p><p>This season, the Gonzaga product is averaging 7.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per outing. Olynyk mostly comes off the bench and plays 21.9 minutes per game, but that’s more similar to the role he’d likely have in Beantown.</p><p>Regardless of a possible trade, the Celtics and Jazz will meet soon for the first time all season on Friday, January 5th.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
