Philadelphia is coming off a dismal season that saw the franchise heavily struggle with injuries. While the uncertainty behind Joel Embiid and Paul George’s health status will always be a concern, there is some room for optimism. Jared McCain will be returning after an encouraging rookie season, and the Sixers have added some much-needed new players from the 2025 NBA Draft. Last season, Oubre Jr. averaged 15.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. The former Kansas standout consistently picked up the top defensive assignments throughout the year and added key wing depth to a 76ers’ roster that desperately needed it. Kelly’s return significantly helps Philadelphia’s quest for a bounce-back season, and there’s a legitimate chance that this could happen.</p><p>The Eastern Conference, on paper, feels more open at the top than it’s been in years past. The Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers are both injury-ridden, with the former undergoing significant roster changes. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to exorcise their most recent playoff demons, while the New York Knicks are still in the process of finding a new head coach. There are other threats in the conference as well, like the revamped Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and Atlanta Hawks, but Philadelphia has the chance to be relevant again in the East.</p><p>Overall, this was a selfless act by Oubre Jr., who surely believes in this roster’s ability to compete right now. His dominant performance wasn’t enough to lift the Sixers ahead of the New York Knicks but he played a big part in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-paul-george-reveals-thought-process-pausing-podcast-p">one of the team’s most promising recent performances</a>.</p><p>Oubre ended the 110-105 defeat with 27 points, five rebounds and three steals on a red-hot 9-14 shooting, including 19 in the first half. Always one to play confidently and energetically, he lit the Knicks up — and he wasn’t afraid to say so.</p><p>“I just didn’t feel like anybody could guard me out there, respectfully,” he said after the game. “At the end of the day, man, just being aggressive, attacking. I’m gonna play defense as hard as I possibly can but when I can put that force on the offensive end as well, I think that that’s who I am as a basketball player: a two-way player.</p><p>“I was just trying to show that and especially [because] I was in The Garden,” Oubre continued. “I was trying to put on a show for the fans and also just help my team win.”</p><p>Before the game, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau called Oubre <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1894877650407002158" rel="noopener">one of the most underrated players in the NBA</a>. He backed it up in a major way.</p><h2><b>Kelly Oubre Jr. posts dominant performance in 76ers’ loss to Knicks</b></h2><p>Although Tyrese Maxey and Paul George rebounded to take care of things from there, leading a strong comeback effort in the second half after they both played poorly to begin the game, Oubre playing so well in the first half made it a game. If not for him, New York would have run away with a resounding win and not needed to sweat it out down the stretch.</p><p>Madison Square Garden gave Oubre and the 76ers lots of motivation. <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-kelly-oubre-jr-thrilled-to-face-knicks-super-fun-madison-square-garden">Oubre spoke previously about his love for MSG</a> and went out and showed it in Philly’s near-comeback.</p><p>“That was one of those things where it kind of boosted us to make sure that we have fun,” he said. “We go out there and we try to put on a show, which I think collectively as a unit we did. Down nearly 20, the two Sixers began yelling at each other shortly after returning to the sideline, with Oubre, in particular, appearing very angry at the big man. The players eventually hugged it out, and Oubre cracked a smile before the game resumed.</p><p>After the loss, Oubre spoke with the media about the argument.</p><p>“Listen, man, anything between me and Joel is nothing,” Oubre <a href="https://x.com/PompeyOnSixers/status/1888209996405428644" rel="noopener">said, via the</a> Inquirer’s Keith Pompey. “We’re brothers in real life. I’ve been knowing him way before I even got to the league and he even got to the league. We both are super fierce competitors. We kind of need that as a team to show some passion and show that we really want this. That’s all it was. It’s nothing. Injuries, however, immediately nixed any chance of early-season chemistry-building.</p><p>Since even before the season began, Embiid has struggled with various ailments, which has limited the big man to just 15 of the team’s 51 games. George and Martin have also already missed nearly 20 games this year, often leaving Maxey, Oubre, and the other Sixers to try to pick up considerable slack.</p><p>As it stands, Philadelphia is in 11th in the Eastern Conference, 1.5 games behind the 10th-place Chicago Bulls for the final Play-In spot.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
