Philadelphia is coming off a dismal season that saw the franchise heavily struggle with injuries. While the uncertainty behind Joel Embiid and Paul George’s health status will always be a concern, there is some room for optimism. Jared McCain will be returning after an encouraging rookie season, and the Sixers have added some much-needed new players from the 2025 NBA Draft. That includes <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-vj-edgecombe-emotional-draft-reaction-no-electricity-revelation">No. 3 overall pick VJ Edgecombe</a>.</p><p>While the former Baylor standout has the talent to start right away on the 76ers, the franchise is getting some great news on a key role player. ESPN Senior NBA Insider Shams Charania <a href="https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1939365488057827690" rel="noopener">broke the news</a> on Oubre Jr.</p><p>“Philadelphia 76ers forward Kelly Oubre Jr. is picking up his $8.4 million player option for next season to return to the team, sources tell ESPN.”</p><p>The 29-year-old has been a productive starter for Nick Nurse’s team over the past two years. Last season, Oubre Jr. averaged 15.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.5 steals. The former Kansas standout consistently picked up the top defensive assignments throughout the year and added key wing depth to a 76ers’ roster that desperately needed it. Kelly’s return significantly helps Philadelphia’s quest for a bounce-back season, and there’s a legitimate chance that this could happen.</p><p>The Eastern Conference, on paper, feels more open at the top than it’s been in years past. The Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers are both injury-ridden, with the former undergoing significant roster changes. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers have yet to exorcise their most recent playoff demons, while the New York Knicks are still in the process of finding a new head coach. There are other threats in the conference as well, like the revamped Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons, and Atlanta Hawks, but Philadelphia has the chance to be relevant again in the East.</p><p>Overall, this was a selfless act by Oubre Jr., who surely believes in this roster’s ability to compete right now. Oubre Jr., Embiid, George, Maxey, Edgecombe, and McCain give Philadelphia a solid six-man core to build around for this upcoming season. While the 76ers do not have much room to sign any impactful free agents, their expectations remain unchanged. I’m blessed to be a part of this organization,” Oubre declared. He said he’s taking his decision “day by day, but also, you know, this is a business. At the end of the day, I’m happy and I feel like I like to finish what I start and I don’t feel complete. So, you know, godspeed.” </p><p>Oubre’s player option is worth $8.3 million. The 29-year-old wing <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/sixers-news-kelly-oubre-jr-reveals-why-he-feels-like-hes-finally-in-the-nba-now">has always been grateful to the 76ers organization</a>, which signed him to a minimum contract when no other team wanted him. Even if he opts out, he’ll surely be angling for a return to Philly on a longer deal.</p><h2><b>Kelly Oubre Jr. hints at staying with 76ers in 2025 offseason </b></h2><p>Oubre was thrust into a bigger role this season with the injuries to stars, putting his per-game averages at 15.1 points, a career-best 1.8 assists and a career-best 1.5 steals. However, his 29.3 percent shooting from deep was the second-worst percentage of his career. Shooting is one area of the game he said he plans to work on this offseason.</p><p>The 76ers want Oubre to be a part of the team moving forward and hope he can play a complementary role around Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George. His dominant performance wasn’t enough to lift the Sixers ahead of the New York Knicks but he played a big part in <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba/philadelphia-76ers/76ers-news-paul-george-reveals-thought-process-pausing-podcast-p">one of the team’s most promising recent performances</a>.</p><p>Oubre ended the 110-105 defeat with 27 points, five rebounds and three steals on a red-hot 9-14 shooting, including 19 in the first half. Always one to play confidently and energetically, he lit the Knicks up — and he wasn’t afraid to say so.</p><p>“I just didn’t feel like anybody could guard me out there, respectfully,” he said after the game. “At the end of the day, man, just being aggressive, attacking. I’m gonna play defense as hard as I possibly can but when I can put that force on the offensive end as well, I think that that’s who I am as a basketball player: a two-way player.</p><p>“I was just trying to show that and especially [because] I was in The Garden,” Oubre continued. “I was trying to put on a show for the fans and also just help my team win.”</p><p>Before the game, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau called Oubre <a href="https://x.com/BySamDiGiovanni/status/1894877650407002158" rel="noopener">one of the most underrated players in the NBA</a>. Down nearly 20, the two Sixers began yelling at each other shortly after returning to the sideline, with Oubre, in particular, appearing very angry at the big man. The players eventually hugged it out, and Oubre cracked a smile before the game resumed.</p><p>After the loss, Oubre spoke with the media about the argument.</p><p>“Listen, man, anything between me and Joel is nothing,” Oubre <a href="https://x.com/PompeyOnSixers/status/1888209996405428644" rel="noopener">said, via the</a> Inquirer’s Keith Pompey. “We’re brothers in real life. I’ve been knowing him way before I even got to the league and he even got to the league. We both are super fierce competitors. We kind of need that as a team to show some passion and show that we really want this. That’s all it was. It’s nothing. Injuries, however, immediately nixed any chance of early-season chemistry-building.</p><p>Since even before the season began, Embiid has struggled with various ailments, which has limited the big man to just 15 of the team’s 51 games. George and Martin have also already missed nearly 20 games this year, often leaving Maxey, Oubre, and the other Sixers to try to pick up considerable slack.</p><p>As it stands, Philadelphia is in 11th in the Eastern Conference, 1.5 games behind the 10th-place Chicago Bulls for the final Play-In spot.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

They lost to the Detroit Pistons, 125-112, in an embarrassing effort that saw them go down by as many as 34 points despite the absence of Detroit star Cade Cunningham. The most notable clip from this game was an argument between Joel Embiid and Kelly Oubre Jr.</p><p>As Oubre gave a <a href="https://x.com/ThiagoPHL/status/1888052918969872511" rel="noopener">poor effort hustling back on defense</a> on a fast break in the third quarter, Embiid went into a timeout frustrated with his teammate. He mimicked Oubre’s jogging and the two got into a heated argument. Arguments between teammates, even heated ones, are not uncommon. However, for such poor effort to even happen is a massive indictment on a team that touts itself as a championship hopeful.</p><h2><b>Joel Embiid, Kelly Oubre Jr. argue during 76ers’ loss to Pistons</b></h2><p>“I think it had to do with getting back in transition, right? I think we weren’t playing well. We’re fighting our way back into the game and we’d taken away most of those transition plays, and there was an exchange,” Nick Nurse told reporters after the game. “But I think it happens once in a while. Like you said, at least they got on the same page when it was over with.”</p><p>Although Embiid had reason to be frustrated with Oubre’s abysmal effort on the play, he didn’t show great effort himself for much of the game. He was horrible in every way imaginable in the first half, personifying the shocking lack of energy the 76ers brought to the beginning of the game.</p><p>Embiid scored 20 points in the third quarter, getting the Sixers as close as 14 points, but it was too little, too late. For him to come out and play with such low energy and then try to make an example out of Oubre, who has missed only three games all season, was a horrible look. Embiid’s many injuries from this season (let alone his career) should inspire him to come out with loads of energy every single game he can get. This contest against the Pistons was the perfect example of what he cannot do.</p><p>Hours before the game, 76ers president of basketball operations <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/76ers-news-daryl-morey-reinforces-championship-belief-despite-early-season-struggles" rel="noopener">Daryl Morey said he believes his team still has championship potential</a>. He reiterated his belief that Embiid is an elite payer who can lead his team to a title. Morey was left completely out to dry, though his primary trade-deadline addition, Quentin Grimes, looked good in his team debut.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>
