Steve Kerr and the Warriors are hoping to put the incident, and the disappointing season, behind them as they embark on a new championship quest in 2023.</p><p>For the Warriors, role players have always been as big a part of their success as superstars like Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry. One of them, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-cory-joseph-fiba-world-cup-injury-update" rel="noopener">Cory Joseph revealed a sobering injury</a> update recently that has many concerned. New General Manager <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/warriors-news-mike-dunleavy-gets-brutally-honest-on-trading-jordan-poole-to-wizards" rel="noopener">Mike Dunleavy didn’t exactly lose</a> any sleep over the Poole trade, as he expects the team to return back to its drama-free ways without the former Michigan star.</p><p>With the offseason sliding toward its inevitable crescendo, the Warriors decided to work out a couple of well known ex-players who have earned a place in Dubs fans’ hearts, along with another former Michigan Wolverine star and a former Duke Blue Devil. According to reports, the <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1689068243040755712" rel="noopener">team has workouts planned</a> for Dion Waiters, Tony Snell, Kent Bazemore, Juan Toscano-Anderson, Harry Giles and Trey Burke, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.</p><p>All could provide a spark off the bench that was sorely lacking at times last season.</p><p>Last season Golden State finished tied for 11th in the NBA in overall team offense, even with Poole’s 20.1 points per game scoring average included.</p><p>Whether the Warriors can improve on that number depends largely on the growth of their young players including Jonathan Kuminga, as well as whether Chris Paul still has much juice left in the battery at the backup point guard position.</p><p>Last season, Toscano-Anderson averaged three points and shot nearly <a href="https://www.espn.com/nba/player/_/id/4401416/juan-toscano-anderson" rel="noopener">45% from the field</a> for the Utah Jazz. At that point in time, the veteran thought that he had a better chance of winning a title in LA than he did with Stephen Curry and Co. Yes, it’s part of the territory of being one of the greatest athletes in the history of humankind. When asked if he’d like to run it back with LeBron James and the Lakers next season, Baze had a straightforward response.</p><p>According to the 6-foot-4 swingman, he’s very much interested in signing a new deal with the Lakers:</p><blockquote>“What I’ll say is nothing ain’t much better than being a Laker, right?” Bazemore said (h/t <a href="https://lakersdaily.com/kent-bazemores-response-when-asked-if-he-wants-to-run-it-back-with-the-lakers/">Sam Leweck of Lakers Daily</a>). “So, getting to see Kob numbers on the wall every day I went to practice was good inspiration for me. … There’s nothing like it, man.”</blockquote><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Bazemore <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-kent-bazemores-five-word-reaction-to-joining-la/">joined</a> the Lakers last summer on a one-year deal and he’s going to be a free agent in the summer. It is clear that he would relish the opportunity to run it back with LeBron and Co. next season in spite of the forgettable campaign the Lakers had in 2021-22. For those who haven’t seen it yet, there is a <a href="https://streamable.com/bluhbd" rel="noopener">video</a> trending online showing LeBron evicting Baze from his seat during a recent LA game and then leaving him hanging as the poor guy dapped himself up instead.</p><p>It was definitely a hilarious moment, and while Bazemore clearly didn’t care how he was snubbed (it seems LeBron didn’t notice him when he was asking to be dapped up anyway), the rest of the world still felt for him. After all, it hasn’t been a good season for the Lakers, and after he was promised a bigger role with the team, the last thing fans want to see is for Bazemore to get ignored.</p><p>Upon seeing the viral clip, James couldn’t help but react. Of course he didn’t mean to do that to Bazemore, so he made sure to apologize to his teammate. They are already out of playoff contention, and so their focus now shifts to what they can do to return to title contention.</p><p>The Purple and Gold franchise is expected to make several roster moves in the offseason. Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook have been linked in trade speculations, though sdome believe the Lakers will retain both players and instead overhaul the players around them in a bid to get younger and more athletic.</p><p>As for Kent Bazemore, his future with the Lakers remain in doubt as well. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, and after playing sparingly throughout 2021-22, LA might have its reservations in bringing him back.</p><p>Hopefully, though, getting kicked out from his seat by LeBron and leaving him hanging won’t be his most memorable moment for the Lakers. The season didn’t go as planned and expected for him and the team, so maybe Rob Pelinka and co. would consider that as they look which player to re-sign and part ways with in the offseason.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

But even within the team, some players had worse years than others.</p><p>One such player who was down bad was Kent Bazemore. While there were several reasons why he didn’t have the best year, LeBron James may hilariously have added insult to injury by evicting then ignoring him during a recent Lakers contest. Check out poor Baze move seats <a href="https://streamable.com/bluhbd">then have to dap himself up afterward.</a></p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Before the season began, Kent Bazemore had <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-kent-bazemores-la-signing-comes-with-a-huge-slap-to-warriors/">reportedly turned down a deal</a> with the Golden State Warriors for more money and years compared to the one-year veteran’s minimum that he signed with the Lakers. The reason? He viewed Los Angeles as a legitimate title contender where he would be featured in a “major role,” as per Mark Medina.</p><figure class="op-interactive"><blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p dir="ltr" lang="en">I'm told Kent Bazemore was offered more money from the Warriors than the Lakers. He’s played in just 39 games, averaging 3.4 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 0.9 assists. In the postseason, he played an additional 32 games, including the 2014-15 Hawks run to the Conference Finals. He played a huge role off the bench for all these Hawks teams and the State Farm Arena crowd will definitely welcome him with open arms.</p><p>It is not all about nostalgia, though. Bazemore can really help a struggling Hawks team regain some of their strength. Right now, the Hawks have good options on the wings offensively, but their defense is absolutely atrocious. Hawks fans want the team to do well, but Trae Young still does not bring the same pressure to the table as others in the league. In Atlanta, a familiar setting for Kent Bazemore, the guard will be able to concentrate on closing out his NBA tab in the right way. It would be very tough to expect the same output he had a few years back, where he was a key part of that squad, but he can be the defensive specialist playing 20-25 minutes per contest off the bench.</p><p>Also, the recent surge of Lance Stephenson and Indiana might prove as a good example. Westbrook has always been a guy fueled by his seemingly ceaseless energy and that’s one of the main things that he will bring to the Lakers. From being the fun cheerleader on the bench during his early years with the Golden State Warriors, Bazemore has become a solid role player through the years and he should provide the Lakers with an instant spark, regardless of how many minutes he gets.</p><p>The Lakers looked lethargic in the NBA Playoffs last season as they got booted out in the first round. With Westbrook’s arrival, the team’s energy should rise up every single game. The list of names is pretty star-studded, with Russell Westbrook, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwight Howard bringing in multiple All-Star appearances.</p><p>Kent Bazemore may not have been as splashy of a signing as the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-la-hilariously-paying-retired-all-star-same-as-carmelo-anthony-dwight-howard-combined/">rest of the Lakers’ free agency recruitment class</a>, but he could play a decent role for an LA side that needs to settle on a rotation.</p><p>The journeyman spoke out about how this second go around with the Lakers was influenced largely by his first. Baze was traded from the Golden State Warriors midseason and <a href="https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bazemke01.html">played just 23 games</a> for LA in total before being let go.</p><p><a href="https://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2021/8/22/22636974/kent-bazemore-lakers-nba-free-agency-carmelo-anthony-atlanta-hawks">Via</a> Jacob Rude of Silver Screen and Roll:</p><blockquote>“That kind of lit a fire underneath me a little bit back in the day,” said Bazemore of his first Lakers stint. “when I used to hold on to those kinds of things before I understood the business side of everything. Both players spoke to the media and discussed, among other things, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook, embracing their roles, and the pursuit of an NBA championship.</p><p>On Friday, the Lakers <a href="https://twitter.com/_michaelcorvo_/status/1423808810322255875">officially acquired</a> Russell Westbrook, signed Anthony, Bazemore, Dwight Howard, Trevor Ariza, Wayne Ellington, Kendrick Nunn, and Malik Monk, and re-signed Talen Horton-Tucker. Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka and head coach Frank Vogel — fresh off a <a href="https://twitter.com/_michaelcorvo_/status/1423818410404638722">contract extension</a> — will be present. (It’ll be the first time since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/heres-what-every-lakers-free-agent-said-about-the-future-after-exit-interviews/">exit interviews</a> that Pelinka and Vogel will take questions.)</p><p>Ironically, Bazemore — who played 23 games in Los Angeles in 2013-14 and played with Anthony in 2019-20 with the Portland Trail Blazers — was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Lakers in 2014 as the team aimed to clear cap space to offer Melo a max contract. Their recruitment <a href="https://www.espn.com/los-angeles/nba/story/_/id/11174172/los-angeles-lakers-give-free-agency-pitch-carmelo-anthony">did not go great</a>.</p><p>In 2021, both vets are happy to be a part of a prolific Lakers roster.</p><p>“That kind of lit a fire underneath me a little bit back in the day, when I used to hold onto those kinds of things before I understood the business side of everything,” Bazemore, 32, acknowledged. “I’m just very fortunate to have another opportunity to play in the best league of basketball with one of the greatest organizations in any sport … I’m here to win.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>“It seems like throughout my whole career, I’ve always been connected with the Lakers, someway, somehow,” Anthony said. “Whether it was through my <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/blazers/2020/01/27/carmelo-anthony-lost-best-friend-kobe-bryant-death-played-heartbroken/4586355002/">brother Kobe</a>, regardless what it is … So, it wasn’t really no pitch this time, I think it was just more of an understanding, like, ‘OK, the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/grading-every-lakers-decision-on-day-2-of-nba-free-agency/">time is now</a>…Let’s put this thing together.’</p><p>Anthony revealed that his long-time friend, LeBron James, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-lebron-james-13-word-pitch-that-convinced-carmelo-anthony-to-join-la/">echoed that sentiment</a>.</p><p>“There’s a lot of understanding on my behalf, there’s a lot of understanding on the Lakers’ behalf … Bron came to me one time and said ‘The time is now. I want you. We gotta make this happen.’ And I took that information and took that dialogue and took my time with it and weighed all the options … and I just felt that, for right now, this was the best time for us. Most people would say we should’ve got together years ago or early in our careers, but we were in two different lanes, we were on two different paths. Everything comes full circle.”</p><figure class="op-interactive"></figure><p>Bazemore, too, is eager to compete alongside LeBron.</p><p>“I have a lot of respect for him, what he’s done for the game of basketball,” Bazemore said. “Even winning the last championship down in the bubble. I was down there, and I realize how crazy of a grind it was for them to get it done … I always wanted to play against him … I got a chance in Atlanta, Eastern Conference Finals. I realized how different of a beast he was and lost a lot of sleep having to guard him … His team would put me on the floor, but I ain’t back down. … Obviously, I don’t have near the track record that he has. But he’ll probably say in 15 years that I was one of the guys who never backed down. That’s on a whole ‘nother level. That’s extremely hard, to accomplish that. I’m coming in with a championship on my mind. I think we all know that this is the one thing that I’m missing. This is the one thing that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/lakers-news-carmelo-anthonys-biggest-frustration-thats-keeping-him-up-at-night/">keeps me up at night</a>. It motivates me because I don’t have it. I want that experience. I want to experience what it’s like — going through the ups and downs of a championship season with a team: The turmoil, and how we come together when those things not going right. When adversity hit, how we gonna come together even tighter, how we gonna have each other’s back, how we gonna support each other. Because the basketball part of it is gonna take care of itself. We have the talent.</p><p>“I’m more excited about the journey of this season — not so much getting on the court in the game because we’re going to win games, we have to win games, let’s just be quite frank — but everything else that comes along with that: The journey, and learning these guys a little bit more and seeing the work ethic and being in the locker room and on the team bus and on the team plane and building a bond and camaraderie to the point where nothing will affect us, anything on the outside world cannot affect us. For me, that’s the most important part that I’m looking forward to.</p><p>“When it starts raining, then what happens? How do we come together? How do we keep our locker room together? How do we keep the young guys engaged in what’s going on when we’re losing games or we drop some games to some teams that we wasn’t supposed to? What happens then? That’s where the expertise and the experiences comes into play. I’m excited about that part of it.”</p><p>Neither player knows precisely what their role is going to be for the Lakers. Anthony insisted his ego his permanently “checked,” after embracing a bench role in Portland.</p><p>“I’m cool, just be transparent with me,” he said. “I was cool with that decision… I had to figure out a way to motivate myself, to keep myself going … I had to swallow that ego. I had to swallow that pride, but I also had to use that ego and that pride to keep me on edge and keep me motivated. I’ve accepted that … I enjoyed it, it was fun, it was basketball. I still was able to do my thing and play ball and have fun and have the love for the game again. I don’t know what’s gonna happen, I just know I’m prepared. I’m ready. I’m ready to go play basketball, I know what’s at stake here. He is now teaming up with LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. Losing Bazemore might sting a bit for the Warriors, but he might end up bearing the most pain.</p><p>According to <a href="https://twitter.com/ShamsCharania/status/1422384544704081926?s=19" rel="noopener">Shams Charania of The Athletic</a>, Bazemore turned down more money and more years (two) to sign with the Lakers. He believes he has a more significant role with the Lakers and a better chance at winning a ring.</p><p>The Lakers beat the Warriors in the play-in tournament last season. After that, they took an early exit in the first round to the Western Conference champions Phoenix Suns.</p><p>Both the Warriors and Lakers were struck with injuries. So we never got a really good look at either team at full strength. The Lakers made some moves to acquire triple-double king Russell Westbrook. And yet, the jury is still out on how good of a fit that will be.</p><p>The Warriors, on the other hand, would be getting the second member of the Splash brothers back in Klay Thompson, who was out the entire season because of injury. A young talent with a year under his belt in James Wiseman should be helpful in a more comforting role. Then, of course, you have Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, who both had tremendous campaigns last season.</p><p>Maybe over time we find out what played into the decision-making of Kent Bazemore, but right now, it’s slightly perplexing when viewing it from the outside.</p><p>When you look at the Warriors’ entire roster, they might have a slight edge when comparing the two teams. Andrew Wiggins had one of the best seasons of his career. At the same time, Jordan Poole and Juan Toscano-Anderson established themselves as legitimate rotation players. Lakers have the bigger names, but they are much older than the up-and-coming players residing on the Dubs’ roster.</p><p>With leaving the Bay Area for Hollywood, Kent Bazemore <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2021-nba-free-agency-tracker-signings-agreements-and-deals/" rel="noopener">is abandoning the best player in the world</a>. Last season, during Curry’s historic individual year, Bazemore repeatedly referred to Curry as the best player in the world — maybe next playing alongside LeBron James, he might change his mind.</p><p>Predicting the outcome of a season is impossible. But money in the NBA is guaranteed. Bazemore is running the risk of playing one year with the Lakers and not winning a championship. In turn, it could mean he misses out on double the money he could have made playing for the Warriors.</p><p>All in all, Bazemore is among the elite in the world of basketball. Making the NBA is no small task. Both teams are expected to be very good. But only one of these teams was the right choice for Kent Bazemore.
