Initially said to be a dislocated left shoulder, it was later revealed that Huerter would need <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-huerter-undergo-season-ending-shoulder-surgery">season-ending surgery to address the matter</a>, which he has been rehabbing throughout the offseason.</p><h2><b>Kevin Huerter cleared for opening night</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Kevin-Huerter.jpg"><figcaption>Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>After being <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-huerter-critical-shoulder-injury-update">cleared for full contact during the preseason</a>, Huerter registered a clean bill of health and looked refreshed in the team’s practices leading up to the start of the season. Kings head coach <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-huerter-opening-night-final-hurdle">Mike Brown addressed Huerter’s status</a> on Tuesday, claiming that he anticipated the sharpshooter bing ready.</p><p>“I think he’s close,” Brown told reporters. “They haven’t given me the green light that he’ll be able to play on Thursday, but I think he’s close. He looks good. He doesn’t seem like he’s missed a beat at all. If he plays, he’ll probably start, but right now we’ve gotta get the green light to see if he’s gonna play.”</p><p>Now that Huerter has been given the green light, he will be playing on Thursday when the Kings open the season on their home floor against Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves, who are coming off a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Whether or not Huerter will start in this game is a completely different question.</p><p>When Huerter got hurt last season, the Kings turned to Keon Ellis at the starting shooting guard position. In the 21 games Ellis started last season, Sacramento posted a 13-8 record. Not to mention, they were a much-improved defensive team due to Ellis’ aggressive play as a perimeter defender.</p><p>Brown has always spoken very highly of Ellis, which is why he is going to hold a significant role once again heading into the 2024-25 season. At this time, the Kings have not revealed who will be starting alongside De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan, and Keegan Murray. Whoever comes off the bench between Ellis and Huerter will be joined by Malik Monk, who is the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2024-25-nba-media-poll-full-picks-mvp-rookie-of-the-year-nba-finals-more">favorite to be named the 2024-25 NBA Sixth Man of the Year</a>.</p><p>Huerter is entering his third season with the Kings. In a total of 139 games with Sacramento, 134 of which he has started in, Huerter has averaged 12.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game while shooting 38.5 percent from three-point range. DeRozan joins De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis to give the Kings three All-Stars as they attempt to rise the ranks in the Western Conference.</p><p>The addition of DeRozan is unquestionably a good one, and he will really help the Kings out in crunch time when the game slows down. However, neither DeRozan nor Sabonis are comfortable shooting three-pointers, making the spacing provided by the Kings’ role players very important.</p><p>Huerter fits the exact mold of someone that Mike Brown would want to slot in next to his three stars. The sharpshooter had a little but of a down year from three-point range last season, knocking down just over 36% of his threes, but the Kings are hoping that he can return to 40% like he was at in 2022-23.</p><p>The Kings need Huerter’s shooting to perk back up after they lost a lot of their role players who could also space the floor. They have Keegan Murray and Malik Monk back in the mix, but Monk spends a lot of time handling the ball with the bench unit. Big seasons from the outside from Huerter and Murray would make this team very hard to guard.</p><figure class="op-tracker"></figure></article>    </body></html>

Upon further imagining, it was revealed that <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-huerter-undergo-season-ending-shoulder-surgery">Huerter would need to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery</a> to repair his labrum.</p><p>In a total of 64 games last season, Huerter averaged 10.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 36.1 percent from three-point range. This was the lowest three-point shooting percentage of Huerter’s career, and his lowest scoring output since his rookie season.</p><p>Since being traded to the Kings from the Atlanta Hawks in 2022, Huerter has been a key shooting weapon on the wing. The Kings are hopeful that he will be able to return to full strength from this injury and once again be a shooting threat alongside All-Stars De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and DeMar DeRozan.</p><h2><b>Kevin Huerter’s role with Kings</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Kevin-Huerter.jpg"><figcaption>Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images</figcaption></figure><p>Huerter will spend the next few weeks ramping up his activities in order to return to the court for actual games. When this occurs, it is certainly not a given that he will be a start for the Kings.</p><p><a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-player-shock-nba-breakout-2024-25-season">Keon Ellis stepped up in a big way for the Kings</a> near the end of the 2023-24 season, and many believe he will be the team’s starting shooting guard to begin the new year due to his defensive tenacity and toughness. DeRozan and Keegan Murray will be occupying both forward spots with Sabonis as the team’s starting center once again, which is why Huerter could realistically be eased back into action from his shoulder injury by coming off the bench.</p><p>This may not be the worst spot for Huerter, especially since teams always need to be aware of where he is on the perimeter. Coming off the bench, Huerter can provide the Kings with a spark, much like how <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/2024-25-nba-media-poll-full-picks-mvp-rookie-of-the-year-nba-finals-more">Sixth Man of the Year candidate Malik Monk</a> is instantly a source of scoring in the second unit.</p><p>As for how Mike Brown feels about getting Huerter back, the Kings head coach is <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article293864284.html" rel="noopener">excited just to get a clean bill of health</a> for once regarding the talent on his roster.</p><p>“It will be great (to get Huerter back),” Brown said, via the Sacramento Bee. “We have a handful of guys that are out right now, so to get to a point where you have your whole team so you can evaluate it the right way is very exciting. They lost starting shooting guard Kevin Huerter for the rest of the season due to a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-huerter-undergo-season-ending-shoulder-surgery">shoulder injury</a>, putting their depth to the test.</p><p>Huerter elected to get surgery on March 29, keeping him out for the rest of the season and rendering his services unavailable for the Kings amid their push for a playoff spot. The contact from Bane hyperextended Huerter’s shoulder, rendering him unable to move his arm.</p><p>Bane didn’t necessarily yank Huerter’s shoulder out of the socket, but the contact was enough to aggravate what was already an existing shoulder issue for the Kings’ marksman.</p><h2><b>Kevin Huerter’s shoulder injury history</b></h2><figure><img src="https://wp.clutchpoints.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Kings-guard-Kevin-Huerter-9-suffers-an-injury-during-the-first-quarter-against-the-Memphis-Grizzlies.jpg"></figure><p>It took nearly two weeks before Kevin Huerter decided to undergo surgery; he was weighing the pros and cons of such a decision, with the most prominent con being that he’ll be unable for the Kings for the stretch run. Nonetheless, Huerter came to the conclusion that surgery was the best way for him to recover from a problem that’s been plaguing him for years.</p><p>“It’s an issue that I’ve had for a couple of years now. Nothing that was significant enough for me to have to fix it. I haven’t had issues with it in a couple of years. [But] this one, most recent [shoulder injury] episode, the injury became more significant. Where it was currently at, it could be 100 percent fixed with surgery. … If I’m just waiting for the next time I get hurt, there could be damage that I can’t fix with surgery,” Huerter said.</p><p>“For me to have the option to be fully 100 percent healthy and put this behind me, I just got to do it, get it done with.”</p><p>The Kings guard added that he dislocated his shoulder as early as when he was a kid, and then <a href="https://www.espn.co.uk/nba/story/_/id/28081352/shoulder-strain-sidelines-hawks-guard-kevin-huerter-two-weeks" rel="noopener">in his sophomore season</a>, he sustained a left rotator cuff strain with an associated shoulder capsule strain on a shooting foul from Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic.</p><p>Kevin Huerter is only 25 years old, so he has plenty of good years of basketball left in him. As a result, the Kings find themselves in the play-in tournament region of the standings. In terms of the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-playoff-picture-2024-live-updates-standings-tiebreakers-play-in-tournament">tiebreakers</a>, Sacramento still has games against the Mavs and Suns on their schedule.</p><p>Huerter being out for the season weakens the Kings’ pursuit of possibly winning their first playoff series since the 2003-04 season. Despite his lackluster numbers this season, Huerter’s presence on the perimeter as a shooter opens up better driving lanes for De’Aaron Fox and Malik Monk on offense. Sacramento picked up a 123-89 road win over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night, giving them their 40th victory of the season. As things stand right now, the Kings are on pace to finish with 48 wins, which would tie their 48-34 record from last season.</p><p>Huerter, who suffered a left shoulder injury against the Memphis Grizzlies on March 18, did not play on Wednesday night against Toronto. After undergoing initial tests, the Kings have reason to worry about one of their best three-point weapons. Even though his scoring and shooting averages have declined compared to the 2022-23 season, Huerter has still been a key part of the team’s nightly rotation. Not to mention, he’s one of their better catch-and-shoot weapons on the perimeter.</p><p>Whether or not the Kings are able to advance past the first round of the playoffs obviously depends on their matchup, but health is going to play a role as well. In regards to players suffering dislocated shoulders, New York Knicks All-Star Julius Randle has missed over seven weeks since <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/knicks-news-julius-randle-to-miss-3-weeks-dislocated-shoulder-injury">dislocating his right shoulder</a>.</p><p>The next question for Huerter became whether or not he suffered any other major injury regarding any ligaments or tendons. Originally, the Kings and Huerter were <a href="https://www.sacbee.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/article286887700.html">exploring treatment options</a> for this shoulder injury before they make a final decision on whether he will have a chance to return this season, according to Jason Anderson of The Sacramento Bee. Then, the Kings announced on Thursday afternoon that Huerter suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder.</p><p>No decision has been made on whether or not he will need to undergo some sort of surgical procedure. It is expected that this injury will end Huerter’s season.</p><p>In the wake of Huerter’s injury, Kings head coach Mike Brown has already made it clear that Keon Ellis will be the team’s fifth starter, alongside De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes, and second-year forward Keegan Murray. His 146 made threes rank second on the team behind only Fox, and Monk’s 1,050 total points scored this season lead all players in the league in total bench points. This is the main reason why the Kings guard will likely claim the <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-media-poll-2023-24-malik-monk-tim-hardaway-jr-sixth-man-of-the-year">Sixth Man of the Year award</a>.</p><p>Although Monk is the player who will be featured more often alongside the starters due to Huerter’s injury, Ellis is the one who is drawing the fifth starter’s role. Brown and the Kings’ coaching staff trust Ellis’ defensive abilities, and the belief is that he can help Sacramento’s 19th ranked defense improve, trending towards the playoffs.</p><p>“Obviously, with this team, it’s always next-man up mentality,” Fox said regarding Huerter’s absence, via Anderson. “We have to be ready to play without Kev if it is some type of long-term thing, and I think everybody is confident in Keon. Whether he starts or comes off the bench, the minutes he’s been providing the last few games, especially since he’s been back in the rotation, have been great.”</p><p>Over his last seven games, Ellis has averaged 6.9 points and 3.0 rebounds per game while shooting 50 percent from three-point range. In this span, Ellis has also averaged 2.1 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. The Kings have always needed help on the defensive side of the court. With Ellis in the starting rotation, they now have a gritty player who is willing to do the little things to help them push the pace of play on offense in transition.</p><p>This injury to Huerter also opens up a little bit more playing time for third-year guard Davion Mitchell, who has always been known for his stout defensive presence, like Ellis. Then there are the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns, two other championship hopefuls led by superstar talents. These two teams are currently set to play one another in the 7-seed vs. 8-seed game.</p><p>The Kings want no part of having to earn their playoff spot by playing one of four championship-contending teams. They also want no part of falling out of the 6-seed spot and then having to draw one of the better teams in the conference for their first-round matchup. Then again, Sacramento has fared well against the likes of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets this season, going a combined 5-2 against these two top-tier contenders.</p><p>The rest of the way, the Kings will face some challenges. Two matchups with the Mavs remain on their schedule, as does one against the Suns. They reportedly offered a trade package centered around Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter in exchange for the All-NBA forward.</p><p>Acquiring Siakam would have vaulted Sacramento into the upper echelon of the Western Conference. The Kings dreamed of a Siakam, De’Aaron Fox, and Domantas Sabonis big three to lead them into a deep postseason run this year. Unfortunately, they likely were not able to meet the demands of Raptors president Masai Ujiri, and likewise, the Kings did not budge in Ujiri’s desired return for the All-Star.</p><p>With Siakam now off the table, the Kings should move onto their contingency plan ahead of the trade deadline. Sacramento is reportedly looking to make an upgrade by packaging both Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter to bolster the Kings’ shot at competing for a championship. With that, here are the best trades the Kings can pursue using Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter.</p><h2><b>Trade for Jerami Grant/Malcolm Brogdon and Bojan Bogdanovic</b></h2><p>Kevin O’Connor <a href="https://www.theringer.com/nba/2024/1/15/24038442/nba-trade-rumors-deadline-spurs-lakers-dejounte-murray-trae-young">recently suggested</a> in a piece on The Ringer a pathway for the Kings to acquire both Jerami Grant and Bojan Bogdanovic. This will involve trading Harrison Barnes to the Blazers and Kevin Huerter to the Pistons.</p><blockquote>Sacramento’s attention should also be glued on Blazers forward Jerami Grant and Pistons forward Bojan Bogdanovic. And not just on one of them, but both. Neither player is better individually than Siakam, but together they could be. In theory, the Kings could send Barnes and Mitchell with picks to Portland for Grant and send Huerter with picks to Detroit for Bogdanovic.</blockquote><p>O’Connor’s idea makes a ton of sense as both Grant and Bogdanovic would help address the Kings’ needs in terms of defense and added three-point shooting.</p><p>Grant seems like a viable backup plan for the Kings’ failed pursuit of Siakam. The 29-year-old is a solid two-way option who offers more athleticism, defense, and scoring. He is definitely going to be an upgrade over the Barnes.</p><p>However, it <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-rumors-jerami-grant-trade-suitors-wont-like-this-blazers-update">doesn’t seem like Portland</a> is keen on moving the 6-foot-7 wing ahead of the trade deadline, <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/toronto-appears-to-be-seeking-established-young-players-in-deal-for-pascal-siakam-165933967.html">according</a> to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. The Blazers just inked Grant to a five-year, $160 million contract this summer and there is no rush on their part to trade him within the next couple of weeks.</p><p>In case they couldn’t get Grant, the Kings can also try to go after Malcolm Brogdon. Fischer noted that the Blazers are more open to moving Brogdon, so Sacramento might have a better chance at nabbing him to pair with Fox in the backcourt. Brogdon would give the Kings another ballhandler on the perimeter and a steady two-way playmaker who can also knock down three-pointers consistently.</p><p>Meanwhile, Bogdanovic should also be a solid option to look at as he is still a productive and efficient scorer who can both thrive as a creator and an off-ball option.</p><h2><b>Brooklyn Nets</b></h2><p><b>Sacramento Kings receive: Mikal Bridges, Royce O’Neale</b></p><p><b>Brooklyn Nets receive: Harrison Barnes, Kevin Huerter, Colby Jones, three first round picks, multiple second round picks</b></p><p>While the previous trade saw Harrison Barnes and Kevin Huerter go in different teams, this deal will send both of them to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Mikal Bridges and Royce O’Neale. Landing both Bridges and O’Neale would be terrific for the Kings as they would instantly address Sacramento’s desires to beef up their defense.</p><p>Bridges would give the Kings a two-way wing who can take on the best perimeter players of the opposing teams. He would also be the second or third option behind Fox and Sabonis.</p><p>However, the Kings will need to gut their draft cupboard to acquire even just Bridges in a trade. The Nets reportedly don’t plan to trade the 27-year-old anytime soon. There is no motivation for the front office to embrace a rebuild since Brooklyn does not own any of its first rounders for the foreseeable future.</p><p>Nonetheless, the Kings could still try to give Nets GM Sean Marks a call and see where they stand on a potential rebuild. Though they don’t have control of their first round picks, these three first rounders from the Kings are nothing to scoff at. However, Huerter will be day-to-day when he returns after the MRI he underwent <a href="https://twitter.com/wojespn/status/1636757237178802178" rel="noopener">came back clean</a>, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.</p><p>A gifted shooter and tertiary playmaker, Huerter has averaged 15.0 points and 2.9 assists per game this season while shooting 40.8 percent from 3-point range. Also capable of holding his own defensively, he’s one of the better starting wings in the league and plays his role well, even if he may not be a household name.</p><p>That said, Kings head coach Mike Brown could opt to play Terence Davis in his stead, as he did on Saturday. Like Huerter, Davis can make an impact on both ends of the floor and do damage from beyond the arc. On one hand, the Kings have won their 42nd game of the 2022-23 NBA season. On the other hand, Sacramento saw shooting guard Kevin Huerter go down with a <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/kings-news-kevin-huerter-leaves-nets-game-with-hamstring-injury-set-for-mri" rel="noopener">lower-body injury</a> during their<a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-odds-kings-vs-nets-prediction-pick-how-to-watch-3-16-2023" rel="noopener"> 101-96</a> victory over the Brooklyn Nets on the road.</p><p>Kevin Huerter is set to underdog further testing to determine the full extent of his injury but the belief is that he is going to miss multiple games.</p><p>In any case, Browns is already thinking about <a href="https://twitter.com/NBCSKings/status/1636581126604210176" rel="noopener">some plans</a> on how the Kings can cover the void temporarily left by Huerter.</p><p>“TD [Terence Davis] can start Kessler [Edwards]. If we need to, we can start Trey [Lyles]. We could bring Keon[Ellis] probably up. I may even throw him out there. It’s a great time for us to experiment a little bit with different guys and different positions if he [Kevin Huerter] can’t go. We’ll see after he gets evaluated. It’s a tough situation to be in, to have him get hurt, but at the end of the day, it’s the next man up, and we just got to keep trying figuring it out collectively.”</p><p>Kevin Huerter played just six minutes against the Nets, going scoreless on four attempts from the field. He has been an integral part of the Kings’ success this season, as he is averaging 15.0 points on 48.7 percent shooting from the field and 40.8 percent from 3-point land, but Sacramento has no urgency to rush him back. He has been averaging a career-high 15.2 points per game, 3.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals with shooting splits of 48.9 percent shooting from the field, 41.0 percent shooting from the three-point line and 71.2 percent shooting from the free-throw line. His field goal percentage and three-point percentage are both career-highs. Huerter participated in the Three-Point Contest during NBA All-Star Weekend but he was eliminated in the first round after finishing with the lowest point total of the event with eight.</p><p>For the Kings to make a deep playoff run, they will need Huerter to be at full strength. The Chicago Bulls legend is the only player who has <a href="https://hoopshype.com/gallery/worst-players-nba-three-point-contest/" rel="noopener">ever shot worse</a> than Huerter did Saturday night.</p><p>Kevin Huerter scored just eight points for a last-place finish in Saturday’s <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/blazers-news-damian-lillard-nba-3-point-contest-win-draws-reaction-from-buddy-hield" rel="noopener">3-point contest</a>. Huerter recorded just 20 percent of the possible 40 points. The Hall of Famer shot 32.7 percent from 3-point range for his career and made just 0.5 threes per game. Jordan shot below 28 percent from downtown in eight different seasons.</p><p>Two years after his embarrassing 3-point contest showing, Jordan famously hit six 3-pointers in the first half of an NBA Finals game against the Portland Trail Blazers.</p><p>Huerter has made 39.2 percent of his 3-point attempts during the 2022-2023 season. The Kings’ guard is a 38.2 percent shooter from distance for his career.</p><p>New York Knicks forward <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/nba-all-star-news-even-julius-randles-son-was-embarrassed-watching-dad-flop-3pt-shootout" rel="noopener">Julius Randle</a> was roasted for a poor showing in the 3-point contest, and he still finished five points ahead of Huerter. Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard more than tripled Huerter with a contest-high 26 points in the first round. Lillard went on to become the 3-point contest champion.</p><p>Vladimir Radmanovic of the Seattle SuperSonics scored six out of a possible 30 points in the 2005 NBA 3-Point contest. Huerter, a four-year NBA veteran, finally comments on the move. </p><p>Huerter spent the first four seasons of his career with the Hawks. But he will now look to find his place with the Kings. </p><p>Since entering the NBA in 2018, <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/players/kevin-huerter/b5550a0f/">Huerter</a> has been solid. He has averaged 11.4 PPG, 3.5 RPG, and 3.2 APG while shooting 43.1% from the field and 37.9% from three. </p><p>The <a href="https://clutchpoints.com/sports/nba/sacramento-kings/">Kings</a> sent Justin Holiday, Moe Harkless, and a future first-round pick to the Hawks in exchange for Huerter.</p><p>After signing a four-year, $65 million extension last October, Huerter knew there was still a chance he could still be traded. Huerter said, “Atlanta told me at the end of last year, ‘It’s not like we’re looking to move you, but for anybody on our team, we’ll listen.” </p><p>After the Hawks traded for San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray last week, <a href="https://www.timesunion.com/sports/article/Kevin-Huerter-returns-to-Capital-Region-after-17297315.php?utm_campaign=CMS%20Sharing%20Tools%20(Premium)&amp;utm_source=t.co&amp;utm_medium=referral">Huerter</a> knew he could be next.</p><blockquote>“They went out and got Murray. I knew they were looking to upgrade their roster and they went out and got him. In some ways, you could kind of feel something was going to be happening,” Huerter said.</blockquote><p>Now that Huerter has arrived in Sacramento, he has high expectations for the team. He believes he can help correct their path, and help guide them to a playoff appearance.</p><blockquote>“The organization hasn’t made the playoffs, I believe, in 16 years and that was one of the first things I heard of. It’s a drought we’re hoping to end,” Hurter added.</blockquote><p>With De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis leading the charge, Huerter could find himself in a great situation.  After the Kings drafted guard Keegan Murray in this year’s draft, the team could potentially have three legitimate playmakers on the court at once.
